Welcome Feroxx! I must confess I'm a huge fan of your works and seeing you tackling Pałac Saski awes me even more. Good luck with that project, though with your skills, I guess you won't need that luck  ;)

Also Hotel Intercontinental looks very nice already, I look very much forward to seeing progress on it. Might be one of few skyscrapers for my new city  :)

Hello Ferox,

It's very nice you decided to start your own BAT thread on SC4D. Maybe you will encourage some other Polish creators to do the same?

I didn't visit you and your friends on the Polish site from a few weeks, I had a serious health problem and limited my activity. Now everything goes better and I hope I will visit you soon  :)

Good luck, you have many fans here at SC4D!

Adam

Texture of the roof is temporary, i wanted only to check how building looks with copper roof.

Perhaps somebody has good texture of copper roof that he could share ?

Some great progress there... The detailing is top-notch...

Here's a copper roof texture I created long ago (originally for my Oslo Slottet) which also found it's way to some other creator's BATs - vester e.g. used it on his Christiansborg Church and debussyman uses it quite some times as well  :) I guess it could look good on this cool palace as well.

Wow, Palac Saski is looking great.  I think that Praiodan's texture is one of the best copper roofing there is.  I've always liked these neoclassical/baroque palaces.

Keep up the good work.

Like the rest I am very pleased to see you starting a thread here. I love the polish buildings you have been uploading. There are really so many beautiful buildings to be found in Poland so you should have more than enough work for the next years (or maybe decades ;D).

This new project is looking very good, you are a very talented batter.

Title: Re: Ferox's BAT's
Post by: praiodan on February 17, 2008, 04:47:37 AM
Feroxx, this is a fab piece of work and I'm glad that you were in fact able to make such a good use of the copper texture!

Besides, I'd like to advise you to scale your model up along the z-axis, about 25%-35% as on the picture you showed of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier the arches are rather small compared to the Sim walking next to it.
Another point I wanted to mention, is the roof of the arcade. You chose to make it flat which looks a bit odd IMO together with the copper texture and the gabled roofs next to it. I would therefore recommend you, to either change the texture there to a more appropriate one (maybe concrete) or remodel this little part and give it a gabled roof with the copper texture on it.
I also found a b/w pic of it on the web, which indicates that there has been a gabled one:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg170.imageshack.us%2Fimg170%2F8357%2Fplac04dw0.jpg&hash=818f89d6a1d2543a80bb32fcfc3e6decfb4db938)

In the end the decision about it is all yours - nevertheless what solution you choose or if you just leave it at that, it'll be a definate download for me. Again, it's a fabulous piece of work &apls

The Palace was many times  remodeled. You found photo from about 1900-1925 year when attic was removed. In 30's roof geomery was changed and attics was added again.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.warszawa1939.pl%2Fzdjecia%2Fpilsudskiego%2Fold%2F126.jpg&hash=4d5080748653c7678c4b5e8f648636a86c265cdd)

On this photo from 1944 year, you can see flat roof covered probably by copper.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.warszawa1939.pl%2Fzdjecia%2Fpilsudskiego%2Fold%2Fpalac_saski_01.jpg&hash=aba871e821dd50917aef449bec2ebaa68f9dc036)

I think that size is ok, when i make palace bigger it will be overscaled (BAT size - 18x8).
Title: Re: Ferox's BAT's
Post by: praiodan on February 17, 2008, 07:25:32 AM
Ah ok, I see  :)

And oh, I didn't mean you should generally scale it up (indeed 18x8 is huge!), but only along the Z-Axis, which is the actual height of the building. For that just take the Non-Uniform Scale tool  :)
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg211.imageshack.us%2Fimg211%2F4981%2Fzwischenablage02lh8.png&hash=646c6bd4e40d7091175528d2aaed54bda0e8199b)
Title: Re: Ferox's BAT's
Post by: Feroxx on February 17, 2008, 08:15:30 AM
Yes i know but when i resize it along Z-axis i lose proportion of this building, it will be to high. People in SC4 are just to big :P
Title: Re: Ferox's BAT's
Post by: vester on February 17, 2008, 08:26:53 AM
Well, it's not only the high people, that is the problem, but more that the game kind of makes the buildings looks lower than they are.
Please reconsider to rescale the height of your bats.

I would rescale them myself with the reader for personal use.
Title: Re: Ferox's BAT's
Post by: praiodan on February 17, 2008, 08:30:26 AM
Yeah, SC dimensions are horrible actually... ever compared a Sim to a car in game?  :D

I wouldn't say a little upscaling would destroy the proportions. In fact it would correct it as the SC perspective makes buildings looks a little squashed.
Anyways, after I had another intensive look at the model I would revoke my former suggested 25%-35% of upscaling. 10%-15% could be appropriate.
Title: Re: Ferox's BAT's
Post by: kwakelaar on February 17, 2008, 08:41:45 AM
The almost finished model is looking wonderful, I like your interpretation of the total shape of this palace.
I would also recommend scaling your bat upwards if you have been using actual measurements of the building when modelling it.

Scaling it up is actually correcting the proportions.

I agree with others - the Saxon Palace is one of the best SC4 palaces ever!  &apls
I am curious of the base lot texture - is this one which you showed on pictures only temporary, or the final one? A good, simple but elegant texture can be a great addon to this beautiful BAT  ;)

And your last w2w project is very interesting too - thank you for sharing these excellent buildings here!

Great work on the palace, I especially enjoy the roof texture.

The tenements look incredible also. Only two criticisms. First is that behind those incredible mural's / graffiti textures there should be something else besides the blank white that it is currently I feel.

Second  is that the roof texture just doesn't seem to work for the model.

Have you visited this site? (http://www.cgtextures.com/) Might help you with future textures.

Either way the tenements look awesome and are very helpful for my cities!

I used this image of side wall, as you see wall is completely white.

Tar paper was used for covering majority of roofs of an old tenements, it was just cheap, more expensive ceramic roof tiles was used only on more representative roofs with big lowering.

In real world before the arcades stood statue of Prince Józef Poniatowski, but i dont have skills to do it :(

Wow, you took that graffi / mural picture and added it to the model perfectly. And I see your point with the tar roofs. Maybe make the output of the texture a bit lower, so that it is a little darker? Because they seem a bit light.

Hope that site helps anyway

If I can put my two cents in, I think there needs to be a larger variety of buildings like this, so when playing the game you can make those wall to wall buildings have a clean look to them instead of always having a very HUGE blank wall.... so thank for you starting to make this! and I hope to see more!!

Maybe not too fancy, but excellent too!
I like this building because it looks "clear" - if you want to create a realistic street, you can't use only buildings with a large amount of architectural details and other decorations. It is very difficult to compose the together. And such buildings as your last one are common on many streets and they are a great background for architectural jewels  :)
(But this buildings looks very nice as itself too, not only as a background!)

The wall texture looks a tad too uniform for my taste (even if the original building was renovated shortly ago and looks rather clean). You could add a slight gradient (see Gascooker's texturing tutorial), this should fix the issue. :)

;D I just happen to discover your beautifully detailed Warsaw collection, quickly went on another dl'ing binge and see you have another project in the works.  The Medieval buildings from Toruń, Poland are very detailed and will blend in real nice with all the other Euro-styled blds in my collection.

Over the past couple of months I've really gotten the bug to develop cities featuring Euro-styled architecture and have liked the results so far.  So far, I've gathered a collection that includes everything from Vanderaap, Porkissimo, the Haarlemmerger collection, Jenx  to name a few and now yours   I really like how my residential zones look and I'm always looking for more variety to add to the mix.  You can never have enough of a good thing :P

I look forward to checking in to see what new buildings you are working on and of course, the completion and release of the Toruń, Poland Medieval buildings

@Nardo69 - Hehe i allways save my buildings in 2 files :)
Maybe in future i will make not so big W2W church. I have old computer and i think it can't handle big and complex object like a church.

@N1_2888 - Hmm I will move brick bows a bit ahead, I think this should help.

@blade2k5 -  I'm glad that you like my BATs  ;D

@Krio - Those houses from Toruń should fit very well to building (pink one) from yours prop pack.

Windows, brick elements are separate models. But i forgot to mention that those buildings from Toruń will be much smaller (now they have 16m width but when i resize it they will be 6m and 10m)

This is a real masterpiece, but ...
... perhaps there isn't enough contast between the window frames and the window glass (or the space behind it). As a result, I'm afraid that the windows may look like "black holes" in lower zoom levels.

I kindly disagree.  It looks like your floors are to low after the first floor.  When you get to the fifth floor you seem to be off by quiet a bit compared to the surrounding buildings.  It looks to me like the second floor windows could be the most increased and the the foloowing floors as well but by a lesser amount.  Now I am not a batter and this is just my opinion from what I see.
Other wise this is a fantastic looking model.
Robin

Rooker - It's typical and normal for this architecture and IMO floors are brilliant.
Title: Re: Ferox's BAT's
Post by: vester on May 14, 2008, 12:24:28 PM
Rooker: A few days after a discussion at the bsc team board about floor highs, I was in Copenhagen I noticed how different the floor highs were.
One place just next to each other was a building with 6 floors and next to it, was a building with 4 floors. The cutter on the 6 floor building was about 1 meter higher up than on the 4 floor.

Well on the other hands I would say a lot of Feroxx buildings looks a bit to low in game.

You guys see where I am from.  I have never seen anything like that before, where the floors are so different and as I said that was just my opinion from what I had seen and what I believe to be right.  But if you two say this is normal in other parts of the world, who am I to argue.
And for the record, I did say the model is excellent.  &apls

Here is photo of this building, as you see floors are lower than in those near older tenements.
Title: Re: Ferox's BAT's

Still, I would say, the floor heights looks a bit to low in the game picture, compared to the RL picture. I would say that you should scale up the height of the floor by 1.3.

In your RL picture, the windows of the 9th floor, looks like they have a height/width ratio that is almost 1. On the in-game picture it looks more like the ratio is more 0.75. A scale of the height by 1.3, would almost make the ratio 1 (1.3x0.75=0.975)

EDIT: RL = Real life
Title: Re: Ferox's BAT's
Post by: Feroxx on May 14, 2008, 01:37:27 PM
My BAT is just wider than the RL building. I had to widen it to fit it to w2w development. Flor size must be smaller that in pre war buildings. If i scale up the high by 1.3 it will by even higher than those bella epoque tenements.

I don't want to say about the SC4 scale and adjusting the height of RL buildings to SC4 conditions. Many experienced people discussed this theme long time ago, especially in BSC. In my opinion, it is good to look at many existing BATs and compare the new model size with them. Buildings from various countries and ages are often used together on one street, it is good to be able to achieve a cosistent general look.

But I would also like to emphasize the same thing as Arne (vester): newer buildings have significantly lower floors than older ones. I visited many ancient tenements in Cracow - during my studies and later when I established my building company (I was engaged in ancient buildings renovation for a few years). Modern residential buildings (for example typical European blocks, but also new tenements, appartments etc.) have floors about 2,70 - 2,80 m high (the first floor is usually higher). The floor height in old buildings is much more, from 3 - 3,20 (first half of 20th century) to 4,5 meters. It's a big difference and it can be often seen at downtown streets in old European cities.

Beautiful buildings Błażej!

I compared this one with my buildings from Ujazdowskie Avenue (in RL floor high is about 4m). But if you build my new BAT next to Erdmoebel's or Odd's buildings hight difference will be very small.

Thank you Ennedi for accurate explaining the topic :)

I do follow Adam, but I wasn't talking about the wealth, but more game pictures compared to RL.
Not comparing to any bats, but more bats (in game) to RL.

EDIT: Here is your picture were the height is rescaled 1.25:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg300.imageshack.us%2Fimg300%2F9620%2Fwola18styzn1kk0.jpg&hash=afa23a63eb374608bbd51b78d5f090cf16b50ff5)  (https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg300.imageshack.us%2Fimg300%2F6523%2F5428811b4194qb0.jpg&hash=0478eae74692487e6924c89e776b186ab0b1a610)
I would say that the height/width ratio is more like in the RL picture.
(Please ignore the sidewalk in the in-game picture)

Yes my BAT have different proportion, but hight is ok, it's only wider.

I paste yours scaled version and as you see building floors now are to high, but proportion was saved, but i think it's beter now because if i scale up my BAT it will by much higher than other European tenements availeble in SC4 and it wouldn't look nice ;)

Here is a nice foto, neogothic one with about 4 meters floor high, next one the left with about 6 m first floor and post war building (dark one) with 6 floors has almost the same hight as the neogothic BATed by my. I think That the dark one has similar floor hight to my new BAT from Polna street.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages30.fotosik.pl%2F34%2F1813f37473a3f9f6.jpg&hash=33cc5ce84f0a2ad1837c16e04e42ff2590a3dc43)

6 floors of my Polna 48 = 5 floors of neogothic Ujazdowskie Avenue 22.

Wow, very interesting.  Thank you for showing me these pictures.
I took some time today to search the internet for stuff like this.  And I found quite a bit.  I knew floors varied in size, but not by that much.
At any rate, my comment was just my opinion of what I was looking at, at the time.  I'm sorry that I started this big debate, but for me, I have leared something very interesting today, so thank you all very much.

Yeah, Vester is totally right, 133% is the number to scale the real life height by.  It might look wrong next to other BATs, but that is because those BAT's scale is incorrect, not because 133% is wrong.
Title: Re: Ferox's BAT's
Post by: Feroxx on May 15, 2008, 11:32:48 PM
Robin it's no problem constructive criticism is needed :)

Jasoncw in gmax floors has about 5 meters so its even more than 133%  (in RL floors has about 2,7 -3 m).
Disturbed proportion are caused by the width of the building which must be fitted to lot size. The building should simply be narrower  but then the building wouldn't fit the w2w building development. So i decided to render building with different proportins (compared to RL) than with very high floors (but witch good building proportions).
I hope I already clarified this problem :)

A perfect addition to the Euro residential set. (... as they have no shops in the ground floor. Have I already mentioned, that I only use such buildings for residential areas? ;D )

So I see, your designs are pretty much texture/images driven. There do look great but sole relicense on 2 d for details isn't quite enough.. many of them appear too flat.
Don't get me wrong I think your work is fantastic! But it may benefit from a bit of modeling to accentuate textures. Excelent textures I must say. do you photograph those yourself?
Title: Re: Ferox's BAT's
Post by: Feroxx on June 18, 2008, 11:53:14 AM
I think front is ok, window sills, frames (not all) remains of the balconys are 3D, maybe i could make more details in the backbuilding because i think windows look too flat.

Those textures was photographed myself.

New screen and new building

Here's a little update.

The real Warsaw Main Rail Station platforms were in a tunnel on the cross-city line (lini średnicowa), so ingame building should work as undergraound and bus station. I think it would work best with rail to subway transition.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg293.imageshack.us%2Fimg293%2F1678%2F35453101wc3.jpg&hash=627338454390a3be718c17542e52f7a71f64b269)

And small bonus, pralnia sign means laundry.

Feroxx, you can easily make this a regular railway station, with the usual transit switch properties, but without any railway textures (and TE) on the lot. Underground railway puzzle pieces have been included into the NAM since more than a year, but virtually nobody is using them because every railway station that is released features visible TE'd railway textures along the platforms. This could be a chance to dig them out ouf their oblivion finally. :)

Andreas I'm not sure but NAM underground rail has street texture ? So i can't use it under normal city development.

Staton is almost done:

The underground rail pieces have a regular road texture. Other pieces could be made if necessary, though - the NAM Team just didn't do so because the relatively low popularity so far. Having a great station like this one, plus the proper publicity here or elsewere could change that. ;)

Hmmm, let me the bad guy here!  :)

The model is very good, but I think there are some issues with the textures:
- The walls are bright white, and even if the real building you're modelling is that white, in SC4 it should be darker (in the viewport it should look light gray rather than white). Especially if plopped next to Maxis buildings, this will look out of place (too bright), as Maxis buildings are too "dull" compared to reality. I'm afraid a white that's so bright would be an eyesore, in SC4 environment. It's also a basic design principle that big items use pale/softer textures, while small items use bright/saturated textures.
- The contrast between the wall and the roof textures is too high. If the wall textures are darkened, this effect will be reduced.
- Many items on the roof textures are unrealistically oversized: the "panels" - in all cases, the "cracks" (or "seams"?) on the central/tallest sector, and the "stains" (weathering effects). The panels are different sized too.
- Roof textures, though depicting similar (or same?) materials are different colour: some have a brownish tint, some others greenish, while some are just gray. Also some are weathered, some others not. The weathering effect is too strong I think.

When I first saw this I said "wow", but then immediately I said "Hmm... somethingn isn't right here".
Don't let this great model be distroyed by poor texturing.

Cogeo:
I very strongly disagree on the point of building being to "bright" or too white.
First of all keep in mind that now you see it against black background. It will make it appear "brighter" or lighter than in game. So for this very reason black is a wrong background color. some gray of about 30-40% should be much more accurate.
Second, this common talk about being too bright next to games building, kind of SC4 mantra. somebody started and then many repeat, often without giving it much though, or observation. When one say that he/she should mention what building exactly!
I took a liberty to make a little collage to demonstrate how this building of Ferrox fairs against "dull" and "dark" buildings of SC4:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi053.radikal.ru%2F0809%2Fa1%2F19389be4d671.jpg&hash=7c5d25a7d864cd5abe5cbcc440d667c8d4326a70)

I rest my case!

But there is one issue I do agree with Cogeo. Textures of roof are all over the place. The biggest problem is that they are very obviously of completely different scale and are like a quilt made from totally different pieces with totally different life stories.

But there is another, imho, even bigger problem - default lighting is totally inadequate for the building of such a complex shape resulting in odd and unsightly banding on the walls and corners. Particularly look at the inner walls of the "courtyard"...
If you do it in Max you should give a serious thought to new lighting setup

Yeah, I think the value of the walls are fine, the color is what should be changed.  There should be more peach or purple or blue or some other color.  You can see what kinds of colors would be appropriate in SimFox's image, or any screenshot from the game.  You can use the eyedropper tool in Photoshop to see exactly what the color is.

I personelly like the colour of the building.  There is a real building down town Toronto with a very similiar brick colour, almost like a tile of some sort.

I also hope that you take Andreas' suggesttion.  I would love to see this building turned into a rail station with under ground rail.  It would be the first I believe as Andreas is suggestting.  ;)
&apls  Awesome looking model!

One moment, what we see in the pics is a render preview? Then it's OK. I thought it was the viewport.

I also don't like those roof textures, especially one on the tallest sector looks weard, but i cant find something better :P So I would be grateful for some good textures  (asphalt and tar paper). :)
Only texture on the office part of station IMO look good, i try only make this texture larger so tar paper fragments should have more realistic size.

Im my opinon walls has good colors, original building was even brighter.

Unfortunately i cant render this in 3dsmax, I can't make it work, and i can't install program to import gmax model to 3ds :/ But i like this grey color in small and deep courtyards :)

Thanx for comments and constructive criticism :)

What is nature of you problem with 3ds Max. "I can't make it work" is a bit vague... May be I can help PM me with details (Max version, installation folder, version of BatFor Max you're using)

I think my biggest problem is Net Framewroks ;) I cant install it and when i run 3dsmax (2008 - 32 bit version) i recive about 10 errors so i try to run BAT4max when i reinstal windows in near future i hope ;)

So I would be grateful for some good textures  (asphalt and tar paper). :)

I'm afraid you can't find a suitable texture for the roof, so you will have to make it yourself, or else take another texture and "doctor" it.

If you search at textures sites you will find a lot of asphalt and tar paper textures (and these are really good), but they usually depict a quite small area, so if you use them in such a big building they will look unrealistically enlarged. Eg splotches would be some 10 meters big, which doesn't look realistic. Or, if you tile them you will get an awful pattern.

As far as I know, for best results the "resolution" should be some 10 pixels per meter, eg for a 50x20 surface the texture should preferably be 500x200 pixels. In general textures look OK if resolution is between 6 and 12 pixels per meter. A lower resolution can cause "pixelation" effects, while a higher one a "blurring" effect, with details getting lost.

So making the texture yourself might be the way to go. There are some effects in Photoshop or PaintShopPro, like the "noise" effects, that can be used.

If I may be so bold I'd like to suggest an improvement.  This is a common beef with most row style lots I've downloaded, not just yours.  I use your lots and love them however when they grow they don't always stack side by side properly.  More times than not the common wall is left exposed which isn't a good look.  This is quite common with the "Small Houses" lot set I've found

I'm hoping you could add some windows and or other detail to these wall so when they are exposed they aren't just a blank wall.

Cheers, and again awesome work!

Yes, side walls are not so aesthetic but they should look like these:

In bigger walls i try to add something like windows, or murals so they dont look so blank.

Beside what Ferox's written, this is the matter of polish law, too ;) (I don't know how about other countries). As these buildings are designed for wall to wall, they fit the whole dimension of the parcel. Our construction law states, that there cannot be any windows, when the distance between wall and lot edge is less than 4 meters.

Of course, for the game purposess, Ferox could make "ministerial derrogation" and make some windows, at least with the corner versions ;).

Hey Feroxx,

Thanks for the Warsaw Central station.... question is though, how does one connect the NAM rail under road to it ?  Same question for the subway ?

Simply plop the station next to the Road/Underground Rail puzzle pieces, just like you would put a Maxis rail station next to a rail line. :)

But I would stongly recommend to adapt its LODs, which makes lotting (and relotting) much easier.

Nifty. For the one under construction, you could make a finished one as well. Then make them a timed prop. After one year, it is actually finished (kinda realistic, huh?)
