Title: Rhenen, NN
Post by: sebes on May 01, 2008, 01:00:28 PM
Some people have requested me to post some pictures of my city and region.

Unfortunately my "main" city, Nieuw Amsterdam, cannot be played anymore on my current computer. The region is OK, but it just takes too long to load, that it's not fun anymore to play it. As I don't have the means yet to buy a new PC, and some people suggested to wait a bit until Vista has been improved, I can nut make the MD that I want about that city yet. I do plan to make a MD about Nieuw Amsterdam, but first need that new PC and more time than I have recently.

A few weekends ago my 10 year old nephew stayed with us. His dream was to play an entire weekend SC4 with me. So, I started a new region with him, based a RL map of Rochester NY, and named it Rhenen, after the little city on the river Rhine in the Netherlands, where he lives and where I was born. We played the game together and build up the north part town, where he chased burglars, car thieves, drove busses, fire engines, the mayor's limo, flew helicopters, drove tanks. Last weekend I made myself the town's center, that I want to show you here. I don't know how often I will play with this city and update this MD, but for now, lets go!

Nieuw Nederland is a former Dutch Colony in North America. Nieuw Nederland is situated between the nations of New England in the West, Quebec, and Lake Ontario in the North, Canada (Ontario) and the United States of America (State of Pennsylvania) in the West. To the south is the Atlantic Ocean, the US states of Delaware, Maryland and the Commonwealth of Virginia (Verginië  in Dutch).

Although the official name of the country is "De Republiek van Nieuw Nederland", the country is mostly referred to as Dutch America. Dutch and Afrikaans speaking people mostly refer to Amerika, Amerikaans and Amerikanen if they talk about the country, the language that is spoken there, or the people that live there. The Dutch Americans call residents of the United States  Staters (or sometimes Statenaren) if they are not friendly, or Statenezen if they act like idiots (or elect one as presidentJ).

The flag of Nieuw Nederland is identical to the flag of the Dutch resistance in the 80-year war with Spain. The colours orange, white and blue reflect the Sovereignty, Neutrality and Prosperity of the Republic.

Rhenen is the capital of the Dutch American shire called Merengouw (Lakeshire). It's a big city with more than 400000 people in the metro-area. It's situated on the Genesee river, just some kilometres before the river flows into Lake Ontario (Ontariomeer). The city, founded in 1708, celebrates it's 300 birthday this year. The town center is situated on the river, and has several bridges crossing the river.

This update is dedicated to Paroch – he knows why.

Update 1 : Rhenen-Centrum

The first thing that passengers approaching Rhenen International airport will see from the city are the many bridges across the Genesee Rivier. This indicates clearly the important function that this cross-road town has, as a major transportation hub, connecting railways, roads, and waterways. And why are there so many bridges close to each other in the downtown area? Well, you will learn that in this update!

1.1 Genesee Bridges in the town center
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi241.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff155%2Fdgnk_amsterdam%2FSC4D%2FRhenen%2FRH%2520C%2F42b37cbb.jpg&hash=390465f9b7971f01fa12aa657e5a1f609fb61858)

From North to South
-   2 railway bridges
-   The A82 Stadsring Bridge
-   The N196 Merengouw Bridge
-   The covered Cunera Bridge
-   The N187 Westerstraat Bridge
-   The A85 Zuid-Oost Tangent Bridge

1.2 Cunerabrug
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi241.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff155%2Fdgnk_amsterdam%2FSC4D%2FRhenen%2FRH%2520C%2Ffea370c5.jpg&hash=f00045bdf3913cf831b37ac37e6d7ac4c217e405)

The Cunerabrug was constructed in 1708. The building of this bridge, that was the main connection between the Eastern part of Nieuw Nederland (and the city of Buffelo) and the remaining part of the colony, caused a small settlement to be founded by Dutch colonists from the city of Rhenen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhenen). They erected a tower to honour Saint Cunera, the patroness of their city.

1.3 Cuneratoren, Westerstraat and Kapelaansplein
(Cunera Tower, Westerstraat and Chaplans Square)
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi241.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff155%2Fdgnk_amsterdam%2FSC4D%2FRhenen%2FRH%2520C%2F276c3f97.jpg&hash=e9e4d27bbf24db283e559bb6caa8ed6daaef4ac5)

Soon the trade route between the two parts of the colony became busier, and the city grew to more than 20000 inhabitants by the end of the 18th century. A new bridge was build to carry the large number of traffic. The village became a booming town. The west part of the old town still has many buildings from that era. Thanks to the new Merengouw Bridge that was build just north of the town in 1870, the Westside of the town center did not had to be demolished to build wider roads for transit traffic, that could bypass the old part of town. But more about that in the next update.

1.4 Merengouw Brug, Cunerabrug and Westerstraatbrug
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi241.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff155%2Fdgnk_amsterdam%2FSC4D%2FRhenen%2FRH%2520C%2Fd65c2727.jpg&hash=d2bfcc24dd664baa88ef0912bb3affd4fb767bf3)

The west part of the city center, called Westoever (Westbank), sprawled around Kapelaansplein (Chaplan Square), Parochieplein, Paulusstraat and Westerstraat, and has that special American Dutch style that attracts many tourists.
The east bank, around Cuneraplein, Herenstraat, Breestraat and Oosteinde has more scarves from the industrial revolution and modern time renovations. At the bottom of the picture you can see the end of the highway from Nieuw Amsterdam, that ends in the heart of Rhenen at Herenplein. You will see more of the east bank in a future update.

1.5 Westoever (Kapelaansplein and Paulusstraat)
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi241.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff155%2Fdgnk_amsterdam%2FSC4D%2FRhenen%2FRH%2520C%2F2354952d.jpg&hash=10909801c33b36cfa5a2c4f4ce05e77cfb42bef2)

I like this picture because you can see the covered Cunera bridge, the finest historical houses and the main streets on the west bank. The citizens of Rhenen are very happy that their town still has that historical atmosphere in this part of town, attacting many tourists from all over the continent, and even from Europe.

1.6 Westoever (Paulusstraat)
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi241.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff155%2Fdgnk_amsterdam%2FSC4D%2FRhenen%2FRH%2520C%2Ff7f9c8ee.jpg&hash=df834387d5055d1bc79fcb5eab48d0d9b5d648fe)

Guided tours start and end near the Cuneratoren.

1.7 Westoever (Westerstraat)
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi241.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff155%2Fdgnk_amsterdam%2FSC4D%2FRhenen%2FRH%2520C%2Fd604357a.jpg&hash=73e8c704bbd9bb4aea5ec31e31357d75f7eb8e10)
Tourists enjoy the Dutch American cuisine in many of the fine restaurants, or just sit on a sidewalk terrace enjoying Dutch American wines.
The Dam Hotel on Chaplan Square is one of the oldest establishments in town, and very convenient located between restaurants and terraces.

1.8 The next update will show more of Westoever
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi241.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff155%2Fdgnk_amsterdam%2FSC4D%2FRhenen%2FRH%2520C%2Fe846de28.jpg&hash=18dd78cea113e55cd9af3e1713264c8be0ceb7cb)

Thanks for visiting and commenting...
Sebes.

PS. Sorry for the menubar that you see in some of the pics in the first two updates... But I cannot redo the pics because the city has grown further....

Sebes, I'm very excited to see that you're jumping into the realm of MDing.  I rather enjoyed the history portion, and Rhenen looks like a very nice little town--and very Dutch.  And I really like how you used the bridges, too, and the road network system you've built in general--very creative layout.

I will definitely be following this one. :)

Well Sebes,

I've waited a long time to see your MD and it was well worth the wait.

The introduction to Nieuw Nederland is great.  Just the right amount of background to get us interested.  And a very good background it is too.

Rhenen looks a cool place.  I like the old city centre on the river.  A great choice of BATs, I have to say

At first it looks like too many bridges but when you read the story and see the different types of bridges you understand why they've been developed that way.

A glass of Amstel or Brand in that bar next to the Dam Hotel and watching the world go by would be a good way to spend an afternoon.

And good to see the Montelbaarnstoren appear along with the Dutch and Amsterdam flags.

Can't wait to see more, especially the stadium of De Mets!

Welcome to the MD section AT LAST!!!!!!

Paul

Hello Sebes, great to see you in the MD section!

Alex is right, bridges and transit network system looks impressive, it will be very interesting to see Rhenen development! You choosen quite challenging place for the downtown with these steep riversides, it will give an unique look to your city.
I like Dutch cities and Dutch buildings (and Dutch people)very much, so I think I will visit you often  :)

Your nephew has much luck to have such uncle, best wishes to him!

sebes, my friend- I've been waiting for this.  All those nice comments you've left me over time and I've never had the chance to do likewise.  I see that is over- It looks like yoiu've got a really fine start with an interesting concept.  It makes me wonder what the origins of New York City (the original Nieuw Amsterdam, of course) looked like.

As an aside to lucas (who made the comment before mine), in the United States, and in particular in New York State, we have freeways that, unlike in Europe, literally enter the very center of the city.  This is Rochester, New York, for example.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg152.imageshack.us%2Fimg152%2F3373%2Frochestercitycenterze8.jpg&hash=52025c364e6e71fa3061702392bc924432f469ae)

That loop freeway is less than one-half mile/1000meters from any point in the central business district (CBD).  Here's Albany, New York State's capitol.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg231.imageshack.us%2Fimg231%2F5722%2Falbanycitycenteriw7.jpg&hash=9d0eb70979dde7d1893e44fdd521bc4aaddc03fa)

The Capitol Plaza is at the center of the pic.  The freeway actually goes underneath of it and dead-ends on the other side.

Finally, here's the Hudson River Palisades, just north of New York City.  I seem to recall that Luxembourg is a European city built right on the edge of a gorge, but it's been a long time (1970s) since I've been there.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg81.imageshack.us%2Fimg81%2F1708%2Fhudsonpalisadesql1.jpg&hash=13c959e520e506d935c8dc09324c5fcb05a1a8f9)

I'm sure we'll all have a very good time watching Nieuw Nederland over the months to come.

Nice start, sebes!  You're doing a great job incorporating the historical aspect into your work, and it shows.

I'll be reading / watching this one with interest.  Good luck!

[OT:  David, you're cutting kinda close to my neck of the woods with that Rochester picture.  ;)]

Wow- it's nice to see so many replies made on the first day!

Replies:

Alex/Tarkus: thanks for this first comment. I am glad you like the lay out of my transport network. Let's say I watch the Master closely when doing his thing, and do pathetic attempt to do the same here. Your words and you being the first to comment here mean a lot to me.

Paul/Paroch: I know you've waited a long time indeed. Glad you found it worth the wait! Many good afternoons can be spent indeed on the sidewalk terraces in Rhenen...
The Mets stadium is in the capital of Nieuw Nederland, but Rhenen has a great football team too, Candia, that you will see in future updates.

Adam/Ennedi: Thanks for your nice comments. Laying the transit-network with the slope-mod was causing me nervous breakdowns... I am happy with the result myself too  ;) . The steep canyons give this city exactly the feeling that I want: Dutch historic housing in a North American landscape and North American infrastructure in a Dutch 'cosy' way...

Lucas: Thanks for comments. I have seen highways closer to downtown areas, especially in North America.  As, despite the old Dutch houses that the colonists built 300 years ago, of course in the last centuries the nation evolved in the same way as other states in North America, the road layout is indeed more ore less the same as in Rochester NY that David/Dedgren showed. I have never been in Rochester NY, and don't know how the river looks like there in real. When building Rhenen I thought about the Mississippi river in Minneapolis MN:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.geo.umn.edu%2Fcourses%2F4703%2FSpring00%2F8-TwinCties%2FImages%2Fhiddenf.jpg&hash=a32e8f73a3fbb14bc426762c4feafa0416807f69)
and the Guadalevín river Ronda (Andalusia, Spain):
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fpie.blogs.com%2Fphotos%2Fandalucia%2Fronda4.jpeg&hash=d84e03bb4ab3c3711b5a6dc2c0b7027ce3136494)

David/Dedgren: Thanks friend for you nice words. Hopefully one day I'll also be able to show you the capital, Nieuw Amsterdam.
Thanks for adding the satellite picture of Rochester NY (indeed, exact the same spot where downtown Rhenen is located) and of Albany (although that city will be called Beverwyk in my MD...).

Ferry/Fledder200:
Thanks for your visit. I hope Rhenen will be a reason for you to hang out on SC4D more often again as I've missed your cheesy comments...

Pat/Firefighter:
Yes –  I finally had to courage to do it lol. I look forward to you following my updates here mate. Stay tuned...

Dustin/Thundercrack: Good that you found Rhenen too. Please reserve a spot in the higher ranks of the MD statistics for me, will you.... ::)

Burgsabre: So you are from the Rhenen area? I have good news for you: you're the first national of Nieuw Nederland to visit here....  Depending on where you live you might see your street or village having a complete Dutch make over here  $%Grinno$%

You're such a great supporter of MDs here at SC4D that it's only right that Rhenen is going to rise through the ranks.

Cabrabruite: I'll hope to give a new update this coming weekend... stay tuned I'd say.

Ferry/Fledder200: So went back in the lurk-mode? What can we do to get you out of that? Good luck with the move... what town did you pick to settle down?

Edge4194 I am glad you like Nieuw Rhenen and Nieuw Nederland. You will get more....

Sebas/Howling/Matey We share that fantasy...except : I place mine in the North-East corner of America  :P .  In my fantasy the British did run over the colony, and renamed the town New York, and we gained it back (like in real, did you know?). But with he treaty of Westminster we did not trade it with England for the Suriname plantages... but kept the city and the colony. But more about that will also follow in a future update about Nieuw Nederland.

I think you mean the book 'Island in the Centre of the World' from Russell Shorto?

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.russellshorto.com%2Fbooks%2Fimages%2Fimage004.jpg&hash=68fa3dfb944161e3fd09e8a7f6bdbd1e02b61196) or (https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nnbh.com%2F9022538133.jpg&hash=625c2ee8fc26804b4065cfeb0e8498b6ab6447b8)

It's also my main source for the Dutch American history. I just continued after 1674 with rewriting the history of New York (and some of that influenced of course the history of the USA).

There is also a great website in Dutch and English, set up by the Library of Congress: The Dutch in America, 1609-1664 (linkie) (http://rs6.loc.gov/intldl/awkbhtml/kb-1/kb-1.html#track1)

And in one of the next updates I will also inform you a bit more about politics in Nieuw Nederland. You will be amazed who the Dutch Americans elected as Stadhouder (President) !

And interesting information about the Dutch here in the United States, too. I'll have to look into that link you posted. I've often wondered what things would be like here if there were more of a Dutch influence, particularly in New York City--but I guess I'll find out through the work in your MD!

Update 2 : Rhenen-Westoever

As promised last time, this update will show more pictures taken in Rhenen, still showing the town center, on the Westbank of the Genesee River. In fact, the picures were taken at the same time as update 1, so it's still featuring some of Paroch's lots, but from a bit further distance.

2.1 Westoever  with Cuneratoren
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi241.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff155%2Fdgnk_amsterdam%2FSC4D%2FRhenen%2FRH%2520C%2Ffebee53c.jpg&hash=74da0eb9f6b608c5723f344dfb98a67a80f7ad4d)

With the construction of the Merengouw Brug in 1870 traffic could bypass the old town center. At the west bank the bridge ends at Meerplein, where N196(Meerlaan) heads north towards the Ontariomeer shore, and where N187(Westeinde) heads west towards Parochieplein, the western industrial areas of Rhenen, and ends in Buffelo, NN.

2.2 Westoever (Meerplein)

A century later, a statue was erected on Parochieplein in memory for the mayor that decided to build Merengouw Bridge, and preserved the old town for that reason. The statue got nicknamed St Paul van Westeinde)

In the 20th century highways were constructed in the entire country. The nations major East-West highway, the Iroquis Snelweg (A50, I90) runs just 12km south of the town center. The A85, a triangle shaped expressway connects the city with the Iroquis Snelweg in two directions: the Zuid-Oost Tangent towards the South East, and the Zuid-West Tangent towards the South-West, passing by the airport. The city center is surrounded by a 6-lane elevated highway (A82-Stadsring) that enables traffic to get and out of the CBD.

Thanks for watching. Hope you like it...

Quote from: sebes on May 01, 2008, 01:00:28 PMAlthough the official name of the country is "De Republiek van Nieuw Nederland", the country is mostly referred to as Dutch America.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi241.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff155%2Fdgnk_amsterdam%2FSC4D%2FGeneral%2Fflags%2520etc%2F450px-Prinsenvlagsvg.png&hash=bc493b78eb69749f232ed938636e4585739df4d4)

That is indeed true! We do refer to the USA and its inhabitants as Amerika and Amerikaners (respectively).

Also interesting, and perhaps a bit off topic and irrelevant to most people here, is that the "Prinsevlag" as we call it (the Prince's Flag) was incorporated into the South African National Flag (of the Apartheid state). In Afrikaner culture it is still seen as dear to Afrikaners and is a symbol of the culture's resistance (to God only knows what, but let's not go into that). However, nowadays it is increasingly associated with the Afrikaner Right.

Refer to this article about the South African flag -> Click! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_South_Africa)

And look at the image of the former South African flag (before we adopted the beautiful colourful one!), or as we call it (as do the Dutch theirs), the "oranje, blanje, blou" or (as I understand it) the "orange, white and blue). :)

Sorry to have hogged your MD Sebes, but I wanted to pop in as well and commend you for finally jumping into it and with such a bang! Yay! Good luck and all the best!

Regards,

Marius

Hey, nice update there Sebes.

And seeing as it's the end of a long week I do feel as though I could sleep on my PC!

The old city is looking great there and I love the way you describe the roads around it.  Westoever looks great with all of the traffic.  Of course the Parochplein and Van Westeinde made me smile  :)

The deep gorge river gives it an interesting look.

The overview of the quad is very interesting.  I will be particularly interested to see the district with the apartment blocks (by SFBT) in the north and OF COURSE, the stadium.  Is it the home of De Mets by any chance??

I look forward to finding out the answers to these questions!

Nice work, but when I see those gorges in combination with the dutch BATS (did I ever told you that I am a big fan of Vanderaap and Harlemmergold?) I just have to think of the song "In The Dutch Mountains" from The Nits.I haven't been in the Netherlands very much, and that steam engine museum is on my "To Visit" - List for years now but from the few times I have been there I remmebr it being flat ...

Take care (and don't forget to make backups)

Unfortunately no real update today. The game does not open anymore, so it's now definately time to buy a new PC with more memory. But as I will be on vacation as of the end of this week, you will have to wait a couple of weeks before I can show more. I might come with a small update later this week that I prepared and promissed somebody to do... but if no in game pictures can be shown the update is not half as much fun.  ::)

But, I owe you, my loyal visitors, some of these:

Replies:

Alex/Tarkus: Indeed, no national roadnetwork without routenumbers !  I was crazy enough to download ALL (!) road numbers from NY-state and NJ-state, list them, and renumber them ALL. It took me days to do so, and to developpe a structure in it... I hope to post it in a nice Tarkus' worthy map one day in this MD for you

Marius/-M-: Baie dankie for your great comment my friend. I just knew you would comment on the Nieuw Nederland flag like you did. This - the Oranje/Blanje/Blue was the National Flag of the Dutch Republic at the time that the Dutch American and Cape Colonies were founded, so it's not really a coincidence that the South African flag resembled it for a long time until the rainbow flag was introduced. Also the official flags of the RL Cities of New York and Albany are based on the Princenvlag by the way:

NYC: (https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fcommons%2Fthumb%2Fb%2Fba%2FFlag_of_New_York_City.svg%2F100px-Flag_of_New_York_City.svg.png&hash=4e3f29707444fad632bb44719ecf2cd0d67b7d6d) and Albany: (https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fcommons%2Fthumb%2F1%2F19%2FVlagAlbany.png%2F100px-VlagAlbany.png&hash=e92e61ff1273cbefc2b3b6dab27954ba647802b3)

Paul/Paroch: I am glad that the statue fo St Paul van Westeinde made you smile. That was my intention! And the least I could do in exchange for all your nice work.. De Mets homebase is on Manhattan, but Rhenen has a great football team too: Candia-Rhenen (http://www.candia66.nl/)

Bernhard/Nardo: Oh yeah - In the Dutch Mountains..... You know I even listened to that song when building Rhenen?  Indeed, the motherland in Europe is flat- very flat - but this former colony in North America has quite some high mountains, gorges and ridges! Rumour goes that the Nits were actually thinking of the Adirondacks when writing that song  ;)

Kevin/BigSlark: Thanks for your nice comment. I am a big dreamer, and my motto, from childhood,  is probably "what if...". I hope you will continue to like my alternative history for the continent, so: stay tuned.

Bat: Thanks for popping by in Nieuw Nederland. Your comment is appreciated very much!

Derry/TTC: Better late than never! I'm glad that you like it, and will be even more glad if you return here and follow the developments of Dutch America.

FrankU:The SFBT flats are on a megalot, I believe 4x8. If you zone that it mid-density, they will grow. I was trying to get another lot, but as they all grew the same SFBT flats, I just made them historical... I loeve the area and will show some more picture of that when I have dressed the area a little bit more up...

Dustin/Thundercrack83 Thanks for being here and - I am always pleased if you decide to come back and see more...

Sebes, you've got such wonderful tone in your story line.  Rhenen is definately a beautiful city, and I hope you'll be able to continue to enlighten us, we definately want more!  GIVE US MORE  :D WE DEMAND IT  &apls. You can see alot of European influences in our cities and towns here in the States.  If I'm not mistaken, there are Pennsylvania Dutch in Pennsylvania.

Anyway, I hope you get your new PC, and your vacation was relaxing & FUN!  :)

Hi Sebes,

Thanks for that link to the Rhenen team.  That is just the sort of small footie ground I'd like to re-create.

And of course with Nieuwe Nederland setting the Devo 08 tournament on fire I am sure football is more popular than ever in NN.

So, more importantly, when is the new PC going to be delivered?   You have an audience here waiting patiently for the New Nieuwe Nederland!

Let's continue today, shall we? I managed to get the game open again, and was able to make some new pictures. I also had some older pictures of area's of Rhenen that I did not upload yet. Today I will show a combination of pictures from the Eastern Part of Rhenen-Center. But first, some

Dustin/Thundercrack83 No new PC yet - but hopefully by the end of this month funds will be present to make a nice order at Dell's...  Opening the game is no fun anymore. Even taking one pic takes 5 minutes - and I can even do the dishes while the PC is saving it  ()sad()

Bobbo/buddy I am sooo glad with your comment here... and hope that will make a zillion more. You demand more you say? Well, this small update is a start. Stay tuned for more... It seems that the Pennsylvania Dutch that are currently there are from 18th century German ancestry. However, the original term is indeed referring to settlers from the Dutch colony moving westward... The German and Dutch language are very close to each other. The germans call themselves Deutsch, what could cause a wrong translation by English speaking Pennsylvanians into Dutch, remembering those "similar" speaking people that once settled there too...  The Dutch language was still spoken in the New York and New Jersey area until the early 20th century, by descendants from the settlers (link) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jersey_Dutch) . Of course, in this MD, Dutch is the official language in the Republic of Nieuw Nederland...  and even widely spoken in neighbouring states as Virginië, Pennsylvanië en New England  ;)

Paul/ParochYou're welcome. It was a shock for the entire nation that the Nieuw Nederland team did not make into the Devo'08 semifinals, and did not get to play in Vanbaastenfield in Kingly either...  Well, hopefully in a future tournament we will have more luck. There are even voices that say that we should host the next tournament ourselves...  &idea

Enough said: pictures now

Update 3 : Rhenen-Oostoever

This update will show more pictures taken in Rhenen, still showing the town center, but now the Eastbank of the Genesee River. You will notice that some of the pictures were taken earlier (with only part of my plugins folder loaded), and that some are taken recently. Also in recent pictures you will notice gaps in the city center. There are two explanations for that...The official one: the city council has already torn down some old buildings to make place for new developments. However, economic tide in the region could be better, so grass is growing on the vacant lots... waiting for future developments. But, unofficially it seems that the mayor is too busy with other things, but had to update this week to avoid being discharged because of inactivity...  Well, we'll probably never hear the real reason behind it...

3.1 Cunerahof and Heereplein (seen from the West)
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi241.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff155%2Fdgnk_amsterdam%2FSC4D%2FRhenen%2FRH%2520C%2FU3%2FRHCCCunerapleinW.jpg&hash=269c96c2248359e570f099e369033c2cbebbfbb9)
This is an older picture. At the bottom you can see the edge of the Genessee River Gorge, and the end of the covered Cunera Bridge. I had planned to build a church at the square, but did not had the one that I wanted in my plugins at the time. The avenue running from left to right is Heerestraat, the avenue running from bottom to top is Oosterstraat.

3.2 Heereplein (and start of the A85, South East Tangent)
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi241.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff155%2Fdgnk_amsterdam%2FSC4D%2FRhenen%2FRH%2520C%2FU3%2FRHCZHeerepleinW.jpg&hash=2d63c33652d5ec730c2f075bc477a5d1fe647ce9)
The highway bridge at the right end of the picture is the South West Tangent, crossing the Genessee River. In the middle of the picture starts the A85, South East Tangent, that will connect to the A5 and Nieuw Amsterdam.

3.3 Heereplein from a different angle
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi241.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff155%2Fdgnk_amsterdam%2FSC4D%2FRhenen%2FRH%2520C%2FU3%2FRHCZHeerepleinZ.jpg&hash=52d1bdef1d40fc36e6792309f711e6a782170af7)
The interchange that see at the bottom of the picture is Knooppunt Rhenen-Vallen (Rhenen-Falls Interchange)

3.4 Heereplein and Cunerakerk (seen from the East)
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi241.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff155%2Fdgnk_amsterdam%2FSC4D%2FRhenen%2FRH%2520C%2FU3%2FRHCZHeerepleinCunerakerk.jpg&hash=d8d147468f0031601172b4df3216011fa9833164)
The church is plopped now...

3.5 Overview of the East Bank (zoomed out)
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi241.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff155%2Fdgnk_amsterdam%2FSC4D%2FRhenen%2FRH%2520C%2FU3%2FRHCZKnooppuntHeereplein.jpg&hash=a795e17fae984bdd07275b28df724dea135e67f9)
In the center of the picture the interchange Rhenen-Vallen, with the South West tangent to the top of the picture, the South East Tangent to the left, and the Inner City Loop (Binnenstads Ring) to the bottom.

The next pictures will show the central part of downtown Rhenen:

This is a picture taken from the North towards the Center. You see the Innercity Loop (A82) at the bottom of the picture. The avenue is the Breestraat, the extention of Heerestraat.

3.10 Stationsbuurt and East part of downtown
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi241.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff155%2Fdgnk_amsterdam%2FSC4D%2FRhenen%2FRH%2520C%2F10511fbd.jpg&hash=84e1bfaee56a114aa794f7ae0a68a92992e2756f)
The last picture today is taken a few weeks ago. The area has changed since then...(no unemployment either anymore). You can clearly see the Central Station and the Innercity Loop.

Okay - enough for today....  Hope you like this update again!

Well Sebes, I've been waiting patiently for the update and am pleased you've made it.  And I didn't realise until your friendly pointer!

Love the explanation for the empty lots  :D   And yes that church is one of my favourites (but Haarlemergold did such a great job on all his churches). That was the one I used for The Waag on Nieuwemarkt.

It's great seeing all those Vanderaap buildings again - I really do think Rhenen and Kingly should become twin cities - the people must have much in common  :).

I like the way you have the old Dutch buildings in the centre of town but move to more grand/classical architecture as you go into the new downtown area.  I think the highway in the city centre gives some interesting discussions:
1:does it look pretty - no!
2:is it realistic - probably for North America.  It's just not something we see much in the UK, motorways tend to skirt round the edge of a city.
3:is it practical - yes!

Hofplein is looking good - maybe just a diagonal in place of the Boomland Fireworks Shop to finish the scene off.

Well Sebes, I'm glad you're back in the game and I look forward to what follows.

Regards,

Paul

Replies:

Arthur/Art128: Thanks for the nice comment.

Schulmanator: Thanks for stopping by.

Maarten/Mrtnrln: Bedankt! I'm glad you like Dutch buildings - and so do I. There will be more comming here, so stay tuned...

Earth quake: The rock texture is indeed not spectacular, you're right there! And, nobody likes a highway leading into town probably, but it can be very handy if you want to go there.  There are a few places in Holland too where the highway ends just before entering the town, and that is what I tried to get in Nieuw Rhenen to. For example:
Groningen (link) (http://maps.google.nl/maps?q=groningen&ie=UTF8&ll=53.211173,6.561756&spn=0.006284,0.011845&t=k&z=16&iwloc=addr) and Arnhem (link) (http://maps.google.nl/maps?f=q&hl=nl&geocode=&q=arnhem&ie=UTF8&ll=51.979832,5.907469&spn=0.012926,0.023689&t=k&z=15&iwloc=addr)
This MD is based on the situation of Rochester, NY (USA) and that city has a highway looping arround down town, as David/Dedgrens showed earlier in this MD here (link) (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=4541.msg143881#msg143881).

Casper: Thanks for finding Rhenen too! The station area turned out very well indeed. More pictures will follow. It's for me the first time that I use a slope mod, and it makes it all much more realistic!

Eric/Edge4194: Thanks for checking in again friend, and for the positive comment on the highway entering town. From the reactions one can tell if people are from North America or Europe...

Bat: Thanks for your 3rd comment here, and I am looking forward to your 4th  ;)

Paul/Paroch: I am always happy with your comment, no matter when it comes in. Kingly and Rhenen have a lot in common indeed. That is probably because the same architect was contracted to developpe the buildings ;).
Your three points regarding the Inner City Loop highway are all three very right: it is not pretty, it's very american (or 60's in europe), and it's very practical if you want to drive into town! Hofplein is not yet finished. The Boomland Fireworks grew there, and I expect to get a higher stage commercial if the entire area is getting more dressed up. I have been working on the flats residentials area so it will take a few updates before the town center is featured again. So, keep an eye on this place I'd say ...

Looks nice, but unfortunaty we have to wait for more  :'( (For me it's a week without any computer access). This is a good teaser.

Oh, and you forgot Den Haag (A12 and A13) and Amsterdam (A2)  in the list of highways that end in a city.

Still no update..... I had no idea when I posted that teaster that it would take so long...

Story is: I have my new PC, and it's great playing the game on  it. However, my wireless modem from 2001 was too old to handle it, so we had to buy a new one. They happen to come for free if you upgrade your subscription to the internet provider, so we decided to do so - but I have to wait for a month before it will be installed. Can you imagine....

Well - at least the teaser is realy doing what it's supposed to do: tease the hell out of you  ;).  The real update will take another while... but now first some:

Replies:

Maarten/Mrtnrnl: You are right - the highways you mention also enter the city. However, as they don't enter the historic city center I did not mention them. I guess that there are many more places were highways end in a city....

Bat: You'll need to have some more patience. Stay tuned, my friend from Bielefeld

Arthur/Art128: It does look like a drawing indeed! Glad you like the drawing. It took me ages to get it that way  $%Grinno$% (not...)

Alfred.Jones, Casper, sciurus54, manny Thanks for stopping by and liking the teaser. I'm glad you like it as it's all there will be for now. More will come... one day  ()stsfd()

Bohort: I think it's just the maxis rock textures that are in... blame EA  ;)

Paul/Paroch: Yes! An underpass it is. So car racing in Rhenen... that it is a great idea. Thanks. I will have to think on how to arrange that. But indeed, the Innercity Loop as well as the Outercity Beltway (yet to be shown) are reason to consider it...

Burgemeester: Wow, another mayor visiting town. Welcome mayor! The houses are mainly created by Haarlemmergold, Vanderaap(VDA), Tatoed Millionaire and maybe some more.... You can download them from the STEX. Barby also had some Haarlemmergold packs that can be downloaded here on the LEX.

Ryan/Burgsabre87: Yes - plenty of rail option. Tracks will carry goods and passengers towards the West (via Nieuwpoort to Buffeloo), the South (Fingerlake Shire), The North (Ontario Lake shores & Irondeqouitbay) and towards the East to the rest of Nieuw Nederland!

So good friends and loyal visitors: stay tuned for an update in a few weeks....

Good news – I was able to make a temporary connection via the neighbours wireless modem today (don't tell them) and got to upload some pics to Photobucket. So the tour of the Eastern Part of Rhenen-Center can continue. YES!  To make up for the long wait, this update consists of two parts: Eastgate (the quarter between downtown and the station) and Rhenen Central Station. Have fun!

Update 4 : Rhenen-Oosterpoort

In the previous update we explored the Eastbank of the Genessee river, in downtown Rhenen. As you know already, the old town is nowadays surrounded by an elevated highway, that was build during the 50's. It was build to enable transit traffic to cross the city and the river without going through the historic part of town and crossing the old narrow bridges.  It's a blessing for the old city, but at the same time of course the buildings surrounding the historic town had to be demolished for it. One of the old buildings to be demolished was the Oosterpoort (Eastgate). It was situated on the spot where today the NE-exit of the downtown loop is (Centrum NO).

In the second half of the 19th century, the city expanded towards the North East.  The area was called Oosteinde (Eastend) at the time, and the main street through the area is still called that way. There was some textile industry and some residential streets.  The place where the Oosterpoort used to be looks like this in 1960 and today:

The Oosterpoort was at the place where the exit of the elevated highways is today. In the top right corner you can see the small staion Rhenen-Oosterpoort. The main street running North-South is Uniestraat.

Rhenen Centraal Station

At the end of the 19th century, Rhenen was connected to the Dutch American Railroad System (HAS). The nations main railroad, from Nieuw Amsterdam to Buffeloo via Beverwijk, Syracuse and Rhenen, runs just north of the city and the Oosterpoort Area.  A small station Oosterpoort was build near the Eastgate, but just north of the Oosterpoort quarter also the main station, Rhenen Centraal Station (RCS) was build. During the second  half of 20th century the RCS-area was an attractive place to construct office buildings. Currently, the trains and highway network bring the commercial workforce In the offices. But, a metro line has been planned to connect the RCS-area with the cities main residential areas and even with the Airport . Hopefully, the metro will be ready in time to celebrate the cities 300 year anniversarie this fall....

Hi Sebes,

It's good to see some more of Rhenen.  And great to see some "Oosters" - brings back memories of the Oosterdock and oosterpark!!

I like the housing in the Oosterpoort and that square junction with the diagonal avenue is very innovative, I like it.  And funnily enough the East End of London was home to many textile industries many years ago as well.

In 4.4 it's interesting to see that Blockbuster Video has some competition next door to it  ;)

The mayor's statue on Prinsenplein in 4.6 is a really nice place.  The sidewalk mod you have in place there works perfectly.  The whole of the Oosterpoort area has just a really nice feel about it.

The station zone is also very nicely done too.  The big parking plaza adds a nice touch of realism and the tunnel under the station is also a good idea.  In 4.17 I really like the apartment blocks layout in the bottom right corner, and the hospital with the bridge over the avenue is great.

If I may add a couple of suggestions.......

The railways look a little odd with the concrete texture underneath them, particularly on the diagonals.  I think the grass/dirt underneath works better.
And the area around the station looks at though there is plenty of green to still build on - I am guessing you are going to build into this zone.
I'd also recommend downloading Mas71 Walls from the LEX (power search Mas71) as they would finish off the embankments and entrance to the tunnel.

Thanks for the update and good luck with the nex modem and broadband line.

Paul

Well I finally made it.  Sorry, was a long trip over from Watersford.  Stupid works at the Airport, plus had to stop over and help build some ponds in Balnavia and attend the football in West End.  Here now though.

I love the way you have worked with the gorges in the first update.  Funnily enough the Coke building was one of the first high rises in Watersford too.  I like the station, although something is messing with my perception and I can't quite figure out whats happening with the ground there.

I agree about the empty spots, but that can be easily fixed.

Another critique I have (sorry!) is that lone Maxis glass condo in some of those pics; it just kinda sticks out too much. I like the use of tunnels; maximizes the space used. I'll be eager to see your next update!

Update 5 : Rhenen-Hoog (Rhenen Heights)

This update we will be exploring the northern part of central Rhenen. The North part of downtown got heavily damaged in the 50's, when the elevated highway surrounding the historic city was build. The highway had to go through the north part of the downtown to bypass the waterfalls in the Genesee river : a bridge just down the river near the falls would moist  the road, what might cause accidents due slippery asphalt. But also the danger of drivers watching the spectacular falls instead of traffic made the city board decide to have the river crossed just South of the waterfalls.

5.1 Rhenenvallen

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fcommons%2Fthumb%2F0%2F01%2FRochester_NY_High_Falls_2001.jpeg%2F800px-Rochester_NY_High_Falls_2001.jpeg&hash=35865287b4d2df1b707f19432620805ae8c99100)

See this picture ( link (http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff155/dgnk_amsterdam/SC4D/Rhenen/RH%20C/42b37cbb.jpg)) for the bridges across the Genesee River. Because the railroad also crosses the river just south of the falls (it was easier building there in the 19th century) the Inner City loop had to be build a bit closer towards the old town bridges. Consequently the North part of downtown had to be torn down.

Luckily, the downtown markets remained in place. Fresh fruit and vegetables from Lakeshire are brought here every day, as well as fresh fish from Lake Ontario. The fresh goods are snapped up by the yuppies and dinkies that rent the high-end apartments in the historic inner city.

One of the buildings that had to make place for the new city ring was the St Cunera Hospital.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.deoneo.nl%2Fimages%2Fnieuws%2F670%2Fnieuws_ziekenhuis_groot.jpg&hash=604eae499753080f2a648040cbbb9a3bc35ccf29)

The hospital was named after the cities patroness. The building was constructed in 1892 by the Joannes de Deo foundation, named after the Roman Catholic order that was founded in the 16th century.  (link]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brothers_Hospitallers_of_St._John_of_God]link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brothers_Hospitallers_of_St._John_of_God)). The hospital was rebuild on the other side of the railroad. In the 1990's, the Nieuw Nederland government decided to liberalize the health care market.  Since then, a renowned medical company, Newman Inc., has taken over most hospitals in the country. Also the St Cunera Hospital is now renamed in Newman Inc. Memorial Hospital, and has a very large psychiatric wing. The location of the hospital, in Rhenen-Heights, gives it the nickname City Nut Mountain.

The plans for the new elevated highway were made in the late 40's. When the hospital was ready in 1948 also the surrounding area's were build up with modern residential flat buildings for the people that lived in the to be demolished downtown streets. Their homes had to make place for the elevated highway, and the parking areas for the new businesses  that were expected to settle in the "renovated" northern downtown.

The last picture gives an overview of the entire Rhenen-Hoog area, except the higher flat buildings near Oosterpoort station, that are better seen in the previous update. In the next update we will explore the west bank of the Genesee river a bit more...but, I will first be gone for a 3 weeks vacation, and be tracking in Saxonia, Prague and Berlin. But first.....

pat: Better late than never.... and the same goes for this reply LOL. Still, I don't have the new modem... so updating is painfull exercise depending on sneaking in on the neighbours connections (hope they will leave their machine on during this update  ;)

sciurus54: thanks!

Maarten/mrtnrln: that BUT is very right.: there are indeed a lot of empty spots. The reason is that I build this city on my old machine, and in order to bring the load time down to 1 hour, I had deleted many of the folders with plugins, amongst them most of the BSC and CSX parks. The empty spots that you notice are to be filled with some CSX beauties, especially the seasonal trees, and some of the Godess best creations! As soon as my new modem comes in, I will download datpacker, reinstall all plugins, and finish the empty spots. As I explained in the first update: this city is build on a PC with a lot of handicaps... and is far from being finalized! The pictures that you see are a city that is still under construction (but you might get it...also the cranes were not loaded in the plugins folder :P) Hey, Almere was not nice in the beginning either, was it???

Arthur/Art128 Thanks for the friendly comment. I like the area too -even it 's far from being finished.

Ryan/Burgsabre87 That are neighbours for! I havetried some beach building (for a far future update) but did not have the same result as you have. I'll need some practise on Lake Ontario's shore.

Paul/Paroch Your comments are noted, and highly appreciated. I have downloaded MAS walls, but never yet played with them. They were not in the plugins folder when playing with Rhenen, but plan indeed to try some out with them in future.  Indeed, more offices will rise in the CBD arround the Central Station.
If you liked the appartment blocks in the previous update, you will be very happy with this one I guess. I'm eager to find out what you think of them. But remember, the area is not yet dressed up.... and still some zone's are to be grown. It's far from ready here, but you can get an idea!

Shaun/Diggis Your comment means the world to me! It's the first time I played with the realistic road heights mod (sorry - forgot the real name of it) and it was a pain in getting those tunnels.

Bat Glad you came by again. The 5th update is here... enjoy it!

Dan/dsrwhat316 Your post came in during updating. Yes, the empty spots can be fixed easily indeed.... but need some major infrastructural updates on my PC first (please see my reply to Maarten, above). I also agree with you on the Maxis condo... and next time I will open the game I will get something better there. Any suggestion?

So my friends, see you back in 3 weeks.

Until than.... and please.... leave a comment !

Hey Sebes,

An update in Rhenen is always a good day.  And yes you are right about me loving Rhenen Heights - those apartements look fabulous there.  If they are all growables you have either been very lucky, or have done much bulldozing and "making historic" to achieve such a result - very good indeed.

And I'm pleased those New Dutch have made room for those footie pitches.  You need somewhere for the young Cruyffs, Van Baastens, Gullits and Bergkamps to practice and learn!

I think my favourite picture is 5.10 the flats at Stevensburg - just a really nice simple picture, but very effective.  It may not have a dramatic "whooomph" factor but I'd be tempted to enter that in the Picture Competition, there is something about it that draws me in.

And 5.12 is interesting - I think we've said this before..... those houses are so very British (made by RP who is a Brit) but also so very Dutch (I remember the picture you posted of Emmeldoorm (not sure if I spelt that right)).  I've made a custom lot of two of the six house rows sitting opposite each other.  If you'd like it just let me know.

Well, I've enjoyed this update - and I hope you have a great THREE WEEK vacation.

Catch up soon,

Paul

Maarten/mrtnrln: this update still is showing some empty spots, as I am still not connected to the internet to redo my plugins and download the CSX parks (planned to be plopped between the residentials) and Porkie's squares. And I refused to fill the town with the basic game content....as you can imagine. So I will be asking your (and everybody elses) patience for a few more weeks. (pictures for this update were also taken in May-June already, when I still had the internet connection)

Bat: I am happy that you liked it. Now, lets see what you think of the 6th update...

Paul/Paroch: I knew that you'd like the rowhouses. Indeed, it was a lot of bulldozing, waiting, bulldozing, waiting, bulldozing, waiting and making historical.... It took forever, and as you can see, the process is still going on to get the monotonous look in that part of town. But, it's worth it, I am also pleased with the result myself.  Any larger size rowhouse or flat lots are always welcome here, you know that my friend. (when internet is up and running at my own PC again – I expect it this or next week- we can there meet again:)

Pat: I know!  I cannot wait to FINALLY receive the new modem and hook myself on to the world again. I'm totally fed up after 2 months of improvising connections.  An ingame waterfall... ouch... I have never practized that. I believe that the map does not even a height difference there. I will probably make a hideous attempt to make the Rhenen Falls somewhere in the next weeks, but I doubt if I will be brave enough to share the results.

Update 6 : Rhenen-St Marts

This update is dedicated to my nephew Mart, co-founder of this city, who celebrated his 11th birthday a few weeks ago. In this update we will explore the west bank of the Genesee river.  A small part of the historic town, Westend, is also on the west bank, as we have seen in the first update.  The Stadsring,  the inner-city elevated highway, surrounds Westend, and has a  stacked interchange with the Tangential Highway A85.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.candia66.nl%2Ftemplates%2Fcool_raji%2Fimages%2Fmambo_header.gif&hash=2eaea2dbbe7d5bd073390a1ebd5b178be6170beb)

Just south of the interchange is the football stadium of Candia. Candia was founded in 1882 as Rhenense Boys. The stadium, build in 1930, is still nicknamed Boys Club Lane Stadium, although that club merged in 1966 with Voorwaarts Rhenen to become Candia '66.

6.1  Candia'66 Stadium on Boys Club Lane

Candia is playing in the Dutch American Premier Football League, and is sponsored by Kodak (a large multinational photographic industry, headquartered in Rhenen.  In this years competition they are on the 4th position, right after FC Manhattan (Nw Amsterdam), Yankees (Nw Amsterdam) and  BSC (Buffelloo). Well know players from Candia'66 are Luuk Kreamalmeyer,  John Menyongar and Scott Palguta.
Candia has a very promising future. Take a look at the youngsters, and you can be sure that club sponsor Kodak and team sponsor Cunera Carpets invest millions of American Guilders into the clubs future, to secure a leading role in the top of the Nedlloyd Liga . Most promising players are: Floris Jan Staal , Mart Kruidenier and Peter de Gooijer.

Just south of the stadium you can find one of the old flour mills. This mill is still working. In the 19th century Rhenen got nicknamed Flour City of Dutch America because the high number of mills that were build on the shores of the fast flowing Genesee River, that provided natural power to the mills. By 1834, some 20 flour mills were producing 500,000 barrels (44,000 t) annually.

West of the flour mills a low density residential quarter was established, and named after Saint Martinus. The area is now called St Marts, and besides the Candia Stadium, the area is well known because of the cargo railyard with the same name. Let's watch some pictures of the residential area now:

This is the area just north of St Marts, Meersberg. I still have to work on the area, but this will be a high wealth residential area. (You can also see a part of Rhenen Heights on the eastbank in this picture)

And this is a glimpse of downtown again, towards the South. This will also come back in the next update...

Ok - that's it for today. I realy hope that my new modem will arrive this week, so that I can first update my plugins again with the missing folders, then download some of the new stuff on the LEX that came out in the past 3 months, and then plops some eye candy parks and plazas in the empty spots that were shown in the previous updates. Let me know if there is any picture in particular that you wish to see again after the finishing touch ;)

Until then, stay tuned.... and while doing so: please leave a comment!

Hey Sebes,

Great to see another Rhenen update and what an honour to have a part of the city called Westend - nice one!!

I really like the "texture" of the photos - they look almost "grainy" which gives a different kinda feel.

Your city really has some nice touches to it.  I like the way you've incorporated your nephew's football team into Rhenen, I'm sure he liked that.  In 6.2 and 6.3 I like the green spaces amongst the houses, gives a nice feeling of space to the suburb.  The railyard is very well done - I just hope the chemical plant and firework store in 6.5 don't have any accidents when their products meet!!

The church fits in very well and I think 6.9 is my favourite pic in this update.  And thanks for including the traffic data, I always find it interesting to see how the city is operating.

Good luck with the new modem and LEX downloading.

All the best

Paul

Hi Sebes
Very nice to see you have started a MD here on SC4D. I have just had a look through all your updates, and I must say there is an eclectic mix of almost every sort of style. Your updates are detailed and with a lot of pictures from your developing city. As some already have commented, there are a lot of empty spots and I do look forward to see the result when you start filling in these.
Hopefully you will find some time now and then to make some new updates for us.  :)

Rhenen's done very well so far under your guidance.  I look forward to seeing what else transpires!

Oh, and I'm a little too far out of your MD's region here.  I'm almost halfway to Buffalo!

Although, if you need consulting on a 'Nieuw Lyndonville', feel free to PM me.

Network system is very  impressing :) In my opinon you should fill empty gaps, parking spaces could be good fillers :)

Really nice work.... I like the small European town feel.
