Hey, everyone! This is my 1st MD on SC4D, and I'm glad you are checking it out now. I will only have partial updates sporadically, since this region is already being showcased over on Simtropolis, just click here (http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=36&threadid=92793&enterthread=y) to check it out! I'll keep everyone filled in on new happenings, so without further ado, let's start the show!

The Capital City of Bevelle
This'll be the 1st city on our tour of Bevelle. Here we go!

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg234.imageshack.us%2Fimg234%2F1350%2Fcityofbevellecentralsquuh9.jpg&hash=f023a930971224f3847df17bacd369626a26387b)

This is the Central Square, located in the heart of Downtown. Political and public rallies are a common sight here.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg514.imageshack.us%2Fimg514%2F3811%2Fcityofbevellecentralstaan5.jpg&hash=da2210cc6fcfdb60bec713549acc9865356c51a6)

A stunning night shot of Bevelle Central Station, one of the busiest in the land.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg502.imageshack.us%2Fimg502%2F9463%2Fcityofbevelletheaterla1.jpg&hash=f8f8f06027e4ffafc051a9b4d731be9a13125997)

These are some of the oldest buildings in Bevelle, still elegant to this day.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg521.imageshack.us%2Fimg521%2F7755%2Fcityofbevelletreasurylf3.jpg&hash=eee33fa9e8e4caf2d57e7a22d7a5904bbd6e6fea)

The treasury building (left) and Bevelle City Hall (right), with a GLR line cutting in between the two.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg516.imageshack.us%2Fimg516%2F4103%2Fcityofbevellechancellorws4.jpg&hash=b35ec823cefdece4b6f9a9247e52c566f22bdcf3)

The Chancellor's Mansion, where the government's high muckety-muck resides.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg502.imageshack.us%2Fimg502%2F7384%2Fcityofbevellefederalpolyl3.jpg&hash=5a49af98fa54320df8a988eee673f2933eb51fec)

And this final pic is of the Federal Police Headquarters, the "peace keepers" of the country.

Well, there you have it, the beginning of my 1st Mayor Diary! Enjoy, and feel free to comment with any concerns, critiques, questions, or anything.

Wow! Great start here, my friend! Bevelle looks fantastic (And I love the name, too. I'm a Final Fantasy fan, myself)! I love how you have the GLR going under the road, too. How exactly did you accomplish that?

Anyway, I'll be looking forward to seeing more of your work!
Title: Re: The Republic of Bevelle- A Blend of New and Old
Post by: M4346 on October 10, 2007, 02:55:22 AM
The GLR going under the road was, I assume, done using NAM puzzlepieces. He created a slope (for the GLR to go under) and crossed it with a road-over-GLR puzzlepiece. No?

patfirefghtr: Thanks for being the first to comment. Hope you like this update as well!
CabraBuitre: Thanks!
Schulmanator: I didn't think it was fair to deprive the good readers at SC4D of my work (LOL). Nice to see
                            you commenting here as well!
thundercrack83: Yeah, I'm a FF nut as well. I still can't get over how awesome FFXII is! Okay, back on
topic... As for how I made the GLR slope, just read the comment by M4346, as he just
summed it up perfectly. Thanks for dropping by!
M4346: You described it perfectly! And thanks for commenting!
bat: Why, thank you! And let's take a look at...

Update 1- The Scenic Route
Technically, it's not a route, but you get the idea!

Another great update, my friend! Bevelle does look quite stunning! And thanks for the heads-up about the GLR underpass you made, too. Though I do have one more question about it: What are those gray sidewalk pieces you have on the slopes next to it? I don't recall ever having seen them before.

Oh, what a great start of your MD. The pictures are showing some great planning, the tram tunnel is just awesome - very inventive!  And the scenic "route" looks very nice...  I bet you have spent some hours on that...

:satisfied:

I'll be back here, for sure....

thundercrack83: Hey, thanks for coming back! The sidewalks are found on the STEX, just type in European sidewalks. I modified them in the lot editor to form a
foundation rather than just conform to a slope.

bat: Thanks! And you can just call me Dan... ()stsfd()

Update 3- Welcome to Jeylin City, the Resort of the Republic
We now move on from the government in the Capital City of Bevelle to a beautiful tropical resort city in Jeylin City. The city is a blend of the real world cities of Las Vegas and Atlantic City. These pics will show you why...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg523.imageshack.us%2Fimg523%2F3593%2Fjeylincityjeylinboulevakk7.jpg&hash=f089d9c2a8996af2c2be025c1517ac07beebe545)

The main thoroughfare leading into the heart of the city is Jeylin Boulevard, shown here at night.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg208.imageshack.us%2Fimg208%2F9345%2Fjeylincitycasinosnite1ix3.jpg&hash=295f4485f9abcc6c1870b2e3839686cc0504e033)

Some of the casinos located on the world-famous BoardWalk.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg523.imageshack.us%2Fimg523%2F2070%2Fjeylincitycasinosday2wo4.jpg&hash=1aef648966a676586ac693056056331330c6136d)

One of Jeylin City's numerous construction sites. The city has seen a building boom that is unprecedented in Bevelle's history.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg503.imageshack.us%2Fimg503%2F5742%2Fjeylincitynewcasinoconswg3.jpg&hash=13a8e361105216e4947d73a697dac72473f9511c)

Here's a very active construction site. What will be built here? Who knows...(Don't cheat and check out my Simtropolis CJ to find the answer!)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg208.imageshack.us%2Fimg208%2F645%2Fjeylincitytoyotacenterbkc9.jpg&hash=e170bf4135b42c47d21422f8dddb2e0e36d8f540)

The Toyota Center, located near the famous beaches of Jeylin City.

And now, these final three pics will be of the beautiful beaches at Jeylin City.

A very nice MD you have going here, Dan. I definitely see the resemblance to Atlantic City in these pics. I really like the boardwalk- it is something

thundercrack83: Yes, the neon lights of Las Vegas meets the boardwalk casinos of Atlantic City. Thanks for the comment!
Travis: Well, I created those boardwalk pieces in the Lot Editor because I couldn't find a decent boardwalk lot anywhere else. It took quite some time to accomplish, but it was well-worth the effort. Thanks, fellow Jersey inhabitant!  ;D

Update 4- The Building Boom
Jeylin City is enjoying an unprecedented building boom as the demand for more hotels and casinos grow. Let's see how the city copes...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg503.imageshack.us%2Fimg503%2F5742%2Fjeylincitynewcasinoconswg3.jpg&hash=13a8e361105216e4947d73a697dac72473f9511c)

As we saw in the previous update, the construction at this site is going strong. Let's fast-forward approximately two years...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg407.imageshack.us%2Fimg407%2F4743%2Fjeylincitynewcasinoday1nd2.jpg&hash=c6fa84384521ffd9e66340abac7bf4b7b9a58bfa)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg211.imageshack.us%2Fimg211%2F1206%2Fjeylincitywealthyapartmax7.jpg&hash=895bf2d1e8730be5cfb777f54589fa09235be7af)

Update 5- The Ever-Changing Skyline
Sorry about my extended absence; RL is a force to be reckoned with! Let's continue with our showcase of Jeylin City.

Update 8- The Porthole of the World
I've decided to skip Camden for now, and go right for the heart of industry in Bevelle; the Port at Darrington.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi238.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff177%2Fdsrwhat316%2FThePortatDarrington-ServiceShedandR.jpg&hash=1ee6e36c735da2e0109903c9091dc4fb1fc37e44)

The most effective and cheapest way of transporting goods inland is by rail, evident here with massive railyards near the port.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi238.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff177%2Fdsrwhat316%2FThePortatDarrington-NewPort.jpg&hash=9182100e9890ff50e27b8378c6c3dc99f5ed7a03)

The newest addition to the port, used to import/export grain.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi238.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff177%2Fdsrwhat316%2FThePortatDarrington-FinishedOilPort.jpg&hash=68035d1a4210e2521004011764bd7f61af573bc4)

The oil port imports and refines oil from Bevelle's Adrian Union partner, Jargeah.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi238.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff177%2Fdsrwhat316%2FThePortatDarrington-TugBoats.jpg&hash=64ce395ceda0248736999321fddff6ab0edd718c)

Tug boats are needed for the bigger cargo ships to navigate the waters of the port.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi238.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff177%2Fdsrwhat316%2FThePortatDarrington-SeasideShops.jpg&hash=ab2c25030f140d32c88d72c0f0101691d6ff2612)

The older parts of the port are preserved as a sort of "maritime museum", showcasing the early days of Bevelle's seafaring nature.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi238.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff177%2Fdsrwhat316%2FThePortatDarrington-HillsideOvervie.jpg&hash=dc2ffa182b12d751b6d2eb61cccf06ab31244593)

The hillside terraces overlook the bay and has distant views of Jeylin City's skyline out in the distance, located only 20 miles away.

Well, I'll leave you with these pics for now; don't want to give it all away at once! Stay tuned for more...

This update will wrap up my 2-part series for the Port at Darrington. For those of you who missed the first part, just go back to the last post on the previous page.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi238.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff177%2Fdsrwhat316%2FThePortatDarrington-TripleRailUnder.jpg&hash=1da85c8f1ebe388ae342443532f225c82f2bed23)

This setup was necessary so that passenger train traffic wouldn't be snarled by the many freight trains going in and out of the port railyards.

A couple of bottling plants provide tasty beverages for many parched throats.

Pat: Yeah, that's my favorite too, quiet and secluded; kinda like me  /wrrd%& Thanks for commenting!
rooker1: Thanks, Robin. Took me nearly a week to build it, though  &idea I'm a very slow city builder!
Heblem: Thanks for welcoming page 4! And also, thanks for your nice comment!
Simpson: Thanks, my friend!
bat: Thank you; the parks are always a nice touch when you're dealing with so much concrete and asphalt in an airport.
thundercrack83: WOW thanks! I was looking for my MD in the recently published forum and was going nuts when I couldn't find it. Thanks for the nice surprise!
rooker1: Thanks, Robin! Now I'll have to step up my game and produce more updates!
TheTeaCat: Well, the important thing is that you found it. You can look forward to more awesomeness this month, as well!
Pat: Thanks, Pat! It certainly was a surprise for me!

Update 13- Going Out with a Bang
This will be the final update for the historical city of Dunham. But don't worry; I have something far grander for my next showcased city...

I must say your MD lost my attention after the MD-rearangement, like many others in the crowded recently published section...  I am glad that the staff puts it into the spotlight this month - as it certainly deserves it

Especially the update with the Old School in historic Durham and the Theater district was to my likings! I llike to see the bats of Odd back, especially the one with the S-bahn going trhough, one of my favorites. Also the S-bahn-station-above-Avenue was one of my favorites that you don't see often back in MD's.

I am glad I discovered Belville again

Update 14- Big Time
Welcome to the first update for Bevelle's largest city, Aurora! I have showcased some of Aurora's pics in the Picture Competition thread and in the Show us your... threads. So don't be surprised if you see some of your "favorites" here!
Note: All of these shots were taken before I hit the "play" button, so there isn't any traffic or people shown; but they will be there in future updates!

Hello Dan, your MD is really very interesting!

I especially like your attention to details and your work with parks, sidewalks and other textures. The sandstone texture at long road curves looks perfect, how is it done?
I think you could look at Simcity Plaza and look for SFBT Diagonal Fillers. Using them you can create very nice diagonal sidewalks and alleys, I think this set would be a good addition to your collection.
I like also retaining walls along the sunken highway, and a very interesting use of yellow road noise barriers near one of your skyscrapers - very nice idea!

I must look at some of your solutions more carefully, it seems I will learn a few things from you  :)

rooker1: That building is the Helmsley Building (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=14665) by vanderveenre. Glad you like the sweeping curves; I use them a lot in this city!
thundercrack83: I like to make everything anti-grid, so the road networks are always full of diagonals and, in this case, curves. Thanks for commenting!
TheTeaCat: Thanks very much, my friend!
Ennedi: Hey, there! I was greatly inspired by the works of Badsim's AntigOne; sooo many custom lots and all were so ornately detailed. I have a tutorial for making textures underneath the curves; just click the link in my sig. I actually do have those diagonal fillers, but haven't gotten around to using them yet. But I will in the future! Keep watching; maybe you'll learn a bit more today  :P!
Pat: Thanks much, Pat! It is eyecandy, so it has to be sweet

Most impressive &apls &apls

I like the 4 mosaics as they really give a good feel for your city.
Wonderful skills in the placement of Cathedral - looks perfect.

Looks like you are putting your month in OSITM to good use

That is a fancy downtown again Dan! I admire how to seem to make use of all space in the area, and yet have it filled with cars, parks, tunnels, bridges, viaducts... Excellent way of building friend  &apls

TheTeaCat: Sadly, my time in OSITM is running out, so I have to go out with a bang. Thanks much, my friend!
bat: Glad you liked it and thanks for being one of my biggest supporters!
panthersimcity4: It is also one of the slowest cities I have ever built in terms of the time frame. I've been working on this one city for over two months, and it is only a third finished!
sebes: I use a lot of fillers; some downloaded, some created in the Lot Editor. I appreciate your kind comment!
Pat: Hey, don't fill up on the leftover eyecandy; I whipped up a fresh batch for everyone!

One of the densest parts of Aurora is the area surrounding Ensign Arena.

An excellent update and the last mosaic is truly breathtaking.
It just shows the care and attention to detail that you have put in.

I for one am glad you got OSITM as I may have missed this otherwise
and that would have been a SHAME.

Till I get the chance to visit again you'd better have this

Hey, only just caught up with your MD and I LIKE IT

Gotta love the Britishness of the pic with St Paul's plus GasCooker terraces ;) :D

And great work on all the others.  The sunken rail with the raised road above it particularly caught my eye.

Just like Arnie........I'll be back!

TheTeaCat: Ever since I've been in OSITM, more readers have checked out my MD. Since this is the last day of April, this is my final day here. Remember to visit wherever I go!
paroch: The cathedral area is meant to look old and classical, so I used those terraces to capture that feel. Sunken networks are a must in cities (well, at least American cities  :P) to dampen the noise made by passing traffic. Thanks for visiting!
bat: Thanks, my friend! Hopefully I can break my record for longest mosaic in the future!

Dan, your use of textures under the wide road curves in urban areas takes them to a place I never dreamed about back a year ago.  It's probably one of of the single most brilliant things I've seen lately- and you are showing yourself to be a master of the technique.

You've got my five stars- Bevelle is a great place to spend some quality SC4 time.

Wonderful work here, Dan! Sorry for missing a few of your updates, but I'm all caught up and I'm ready to follow along!

And it seems like I'm just in time--one more post after mine and you're movin' on up to the Best Sellers!

Pat: Yep, this post'll put me in the Best Sellers section now! You'll get a small taste of what's to come with this teaser...
sebes: ....  ......  whoops, sorry! Was hypnotized by the dancing elephants for a second there... Yeah, I seem to be making more mosaics lately; you get a better feel of the cities when all the details are shown in one pic. Thanks for commenting!
dedgren: Those curves were actually put there on a whim. I didn't texture them at first because I didn't know how; then I read metasmurf's tutorial and I applied it. Never though it would create such a stir! Thanks for the awesome comment!
thundercrack83: All is forgiven; but everyone'll have to wait until next week for an update... thanks for dropping by!

Teaser

Only a teaser for this week; got my birthday coming up on the 12th (the big 21!). So I'll be "out of commission" until the middle of next week. But here's something to whet your beaks with:

Dan, you really are showing us some great stuff here.  The first mosaic in the last update was really top class.  It must have taken much plopping, bulldozing and planning to get it looking just so.  Well done.

Happy Birthday for tomorrow Dan.

I have seen your awesome mosaics dotted around the site! :D
That teaser has really made me want to come here again. You have done an awesome job on the transportation system, especially with the curvey roads. The wicked BATs you have chosen to use in your city really bring out the realism! Keep it up Dan the man! &apls

warszawa: Thanks for the birthday wishes! I try and show glimpses of my cities wherever I go. I wanted to have a trademark, so I opted for those textures on the NAM curves. Thanks for the awesome comment!

Now for some bad news regarding Bevelle...

A couple of weeks ago, my hard drive completely died on me. I'm in the process of getting everything straightened out, explaining why I haven't been around lately. I hope to be up and running soon; either continuing Bevelle from my last backup (which was before I started Aurora!) or starting from scratch with a whole new CJ/MD. With summer approaching and my job being more demanding now, I will be gone probably for quite some time. I guarantee I will return one day, so get ready...

Last Rites

Unfortunately all good things must come to an end; this MD is no exception. I have finally fixed my desktop by installing a new hard drive, which means all my previous work is confined now only to pictures and memories. Although this means that Bevelle is no more, there is a glimmer of light on the horizon. I will be starting a new thread on Monday here and on Simtropolis. I hope everyone will join me there and I promise to deliver a SimCity experience like nothing anyone has ever seen before. So get ready... less than 48 hours to go!
