Title: Fantozzi's Lotting Adventures
Post by: fantozzi on March 01, 2018, 06:14:08 AM
Hm, lately I lost a little motivation for playing/creating instead being a pain in the neck in the forums.

There are a few things still on my project list, I'd like to discuss and to get some idears. My skills are limited to lotting, a little modding and doing very simple things in B.A.T. (mostly I took free models from www and brought them into SC4)

My personal list of things I'd like to create:

- making a set of lots that unifies paeng parks with diggis streams, so mainly park pieces with bridges and water connectors for the streams.

- making a different, expanded version of my 'Mass Tourism' based on nos17 parking textures, including roadside and median parking (for 2x OWR3), inspired by the boulevards of Rome and to create touristic areas. But I still miss some diagonal bus props for this project, matching girafe's car props (and nos17 textures) in scale.

- A Vogons-lyrics book store? So far no idea about the building/bat, would need something strange of course.

- Fantozzi's Confusion Mill. I'm thinking of a civic lot/bat that spreads confusion. I imagine the lot should have a funny querry window that gives feedback how much confusion was generated in the city.

Could be like:
Confusion of sims about their gender: 50,002%
Confusion of sims about this is real life or only some sort of simulation: 72%
Confusion of sims about the language of gouvernement actually in use: 33%
Confusion of sims about how to travel to work: 12%
Confusion of sims about the meaning of life: 99,8%

Well, maybe this building/lot made more sense (haha, Fantozzi, great punch line) if it was also giving rewards, don't know - for every task completed (confusion is 100%) you'd get some absolutely useless reward, some ugly statue, the Volgon-lyrics book store, a museum displaying emptyness etc.

But it seems, this is far above my skills, no idear how to do the modding, would need some bats too.

So far my own list of idears. But please feel free to give some feedback, if those ideas seem usefull to you or will be a waste of LEX bandwithh and there are better things I could do. Suggestions are welcome.

Thank you.

EDIT:

Sorry. forgot:

- something to bring summer olympics into town - a modular olympics park you have to build and when completed there's fireworks and the games start and there is economic boost. Don't know, how to do the modding.

- An aerospace museum, or actually something like the one I know (https://sinsheim.technik-museum.de/en/aviation (https://sinsheim.technik-museum.de/en/aviation).

Hhhmm I would like to have simple parks.  :D I am using your Paeng park s and I really like those, but often I am just playing functional city and I just want to plop simple park to boost growth. Too tried or busy to bother with planning a beautiful park and hunting right path lot or plop a park just to notice that I did not have that particular dependency.

So I would love a pack with generic, but improving Maxis parks, in standard size such as 1x1, 2x2, 2x3, 4x4 etc with common props such as flora from Girafe and CP.  So I would want a Head and Shoulders park pack. Just Plop and Go.    :P

You could try to bat your own Vogon building instead of looking for a matching one. Vogon architecture is quite simple (if i remember correctly) therefore it should be a good start in learning gmax.

edit: Nevermind, I didn't notice (until Vortext's reply) you had batted before. But some Vogon architecture would be cool anyway.

That Vogons-lyrics book store would be hilarious!

Also, an aerospace museum would be cool. You could design the lot to be connected via RMIP to an actual airport to get something like this (https://www.google.de/maps/@52.473734,13.1427847,848m/data=!3m1!1e3) or this (https://www.google.de/maps/@52.473734,13.1427847,848m/data=!3m1!1e3).

If it ends up being a Vogon Poetry Book Store, I wanted to point out that is was in fact poetry and not lyrics.  Such a masterpiece would deserve to be done accurately.

My favorite ideas are the unification lots, the expansion of Mass Tourism, the Vogon building, and the aerospace museum.

@ Vortex. Thanks, I should take the opportunity to name myself a great batter. But instead all those models are free content from the web. And maybe those to name me a genious robber aren't polite but true.

@ Indiana Joe. Right. I used a german word for english talk. It's poetry. Seeing there is quite some expertise in this community about Vogons and expectation on such a book store are high - maybe to put this to the end of the list. The past shows, with every project I did, I gained some skills and got a little better. So the present may not be the right time to do it.

@ Terring. Many thanks. I tend to do the unifications lots next (which would also be the second expansion pack to the 'Big Paeng Theory'. All content I need for that is already there, it seems the idea most easiest to realize. On mass tourism I still need to find some nice bus models to violate.  The aerospace museum - it was an idea by airman17 on another site. First I thought: There are plenty of aircraft models already available, this should be easy to lot. But then - you need historical aircrafts.
So if someone knows some aircrafts props (already done for SC4) that should be present in this museum, please feel free to drop a note here.

Once a guy on another site, in another thread wrote, he's missing truck stops. So I lotted truck stops. And regarding downloads they became a much bigger success than the ideas I had in mind on my own.

In the starting post I listed my own ideas. But if you miss or wish something else, please feel free to post it. This thread I opened, even isn't my private property nor am I some kind of director of this thread. If I was in charge, I would generally forbid ownership on ideas. On lots and bats - of course.
But ideas should be as free as the air we breathe. Sometimes different ideas blend into one, sometimes from one old idea arises a new one like a child-idea. It's like the laws of nature, of evolution are working on ideas. The more freedom they have to grow, the more diversity they will create. And ownershp on ideas is like barbwire and fences and cloches on nature to me.

I can't say if I get hooked. Sometimes someone writes something and suddenly my brain is full of ideas. Sometimes someone writes something and my brain is as empty as the space between two galaxies.

That's not because the idea was bad or it's the fault of the person that made some suggestion - it's more like weather. Sometimes there's rain, sometimes it's sun. Well, seems there is weather also inside my brain.

But the change of weather shouldn't hold you back in any way. Feel free to share your ideas for lotting.

I have a thousand silly ideas a day. Most are garbage. Totally unimportant.  As I forget them very soon.
But amongst those thousand is one that takes shape. And this one makes it worth to think those other 999 too.

I don't know if there are enough materials (Props) available, but I love ruins and abandonned lots (or burnt down) or industrial lots that are mainly used for scrap and unused or unsold/unsellable stuff. We have them almost in every city, town and even villages and countryside.
And there' s a serious lack in these. (ploppables)

There are some lots in the Big Paeng Theory you can use standalone, smaller and bigger (the included pdf has pictures of every piece) - but yes, it is very time consuming to puzzle a bigger area together with mixing elements by paeng and me - even me, as I forgot what I had in mind by then partially, have difficulties to find the right pieces. If I had to rate the usabillity of my own creation I had to rate it "masochist level". But did you see the latest Packs by Kingofsimcity? Très, très cool.

@mrbisonm - oh, yes. When I was a child those were the most interesting places in the world. My first cigarette I smoked in a rotten construction site trailer on a junkyard where the pale yellow gras between rusty construction machine grew as high as we were and we could get in there and stay there without being noticed by adults. I think almost every batter who did industrial stuff did also some 'grunge' stuff. Gascooker, Simmer2, bipin ... but they are widely spread across the download areas. Imho would be an excellent idea for a themed prop pack: 'Forgotten places'. I'll keep this, maybe I get some idears browsing through prop packs.

May I ask here: is there a topic/thread where I can post my content description before release (so someone can have a look on it (spelling/grammar/logic)?

And may I ask where to put the word 'also' correctly:

a) This can also be regarded as the second expansion pack.
b) This also can be regarded as the second expansion pack.
c) This can be also regarded as the second expansion pack.
%confuso

Thank you.

I would think that you could create your own development topic in the SC4 Content Developers forum, maybe under Independent Lot Editor Projects

As far as the sentences, grammatically, none of the three are wrong.

Placement of "also" may cause subtle differences in meaning in the sentences.  Note that the following is how I interpret the sentences.

a) implies that in addition to its primary intended purpose/usage, "this" can be regarded as a second expansion pack.
b) might imply that while "this" can be regarded as a second expansion pack, other things can be regarded as a second expansion pack as well.
c) is similar in meaning to a), but is slightly awkward sentence construction in my mind.

I'm sure there will be people who would argue the opposite of my interpretation.  In the end, I think it all comes down to context of what precedes this sentence.  If what precedes the sentence is a description of the primary purpose of "this," then most people would probably get the meaning you intend, regardless of where you placed "also."  Of course, if someone is not an English (or substitute any other language) speaker at all, and must rely on one of the translation tools available on the web (or worse tries to translate the hard way - word by word), there is no way to know exactly what meaning might come out the other end of the translation process.

Interesting. None of the above I really wanted to say.

You know, it's a feeling of extreme helplessness, when you can't express yourself. It's embarassing:

"Doctor, doctor, please help me."

"Shure, what hurts?"

"Emh...err...my...dingbat?"

"It was done with the intension, to be an expansion pack to one of my former releases. But - less convenient - it can be used independent from that former release." Is there a more elegant (less complicated) way to say this?

Trying to express myself, my post always get terrible long and I'm incredible jealous on those, who manage to express my walls of text in a little sentence with a handfull of words. As people might think, my intend is 'much ado about nothing'. But instead I appreciate being short. Truth on this problem might be ... a lack of talent.

@ vester. Can't believe. You did right to mention it. On the chimneys offhand I think, with a shed in front, they could make great distillery lots. I guess for the buildings - energy plants would be quite simple lots with the building covering most part of the lot and therefore not leaving much room for ideas. Most custom power plants I know, they made the subject interesting by making it a special form of energy 'nuclear fusion', 'dark matter' plant, something like this. Don't know. I need an idea what kind of energy production it could be. As the lot most probably can't offer something special except for the building itself it has to be the subject. Maybe something funny? What about a burning-witches-energy plant? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrzMhU_4m-g (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrzMhU_4m-g)

I defenitely put it on my list. But I need ideas about the treatment, the type of energy plant. I guess, the most devious will be my favorite. What about a bicycle melting furnace? Some kind of recycling of strange objects ... maybe some plant where administration can burn classified documents in case of emergency?

The only one I can say for sure is the Small Power Plant.
It was running on Diesel. Its house the biggest diesel engine of the WORLD for, if I remember right for 60 years and some.
It was mostly use as a back up power plant is case of peak usage or power outs.

The Swan Mill was running on coal, but at time I batted it, with to small extensions (zinc covered) it was running on naturally gas.

Not the faintest idea the Hudson & Manhattan or the Bristol.
Best guess coal.

How about:  "While this package is intended as an expansion pack for <name of former release>,  it can be used on its own without needing <name of former release> as a dependency."  That should remove any ambiguity as to your intentions.

FWIW, don't be so hard on yourself!  Having less than complete fluency does not equate to lack of talent.  Any of us capable of attempting to do the same thing (trying to express ourselves coherently in a language other than our native language) could only do the best we can, as I'm sure you are doing.  One should never be embarrassed about doing the best one can.

I was going to say a lot more on this subject, but decided it was starting to turn into a lecture.

Diggis-Paeng-Unification lots, very early development state. Somehow I used the wrong pathway texture again - overwriting doesn't work. Still a lot to do.

Lake Andreas

This is just the basic layout, no plants, rocks, no timed boats, no people, nothing jet on the lots. Lake Andreas has 3 parts, west lake, 9x10, Andreas Bridge, 7x3, and east lake,9x7 (so total length is 20 tiles). I'll try to make other lots fitting to the separate parts, so there will be different layouts possible.

Lake Andreas was formerly just a pond. It got his new name when it was dewatered completely in 2012 for sludge removal and enlargement. To the big surprise of whole Simunoty 58 completely unknown SFBT artefacts were found on the bottom of this lake. They were discovered and fondly restored by Prof. Andreas and now can be seen in an annual exhibition during Advent at the LEX Museum.

Honestly, to me this is too small to be a Lake, I have a pond about this size (2 and half acres big) at my home, and no way to call it a lake. If so, then I own 3 lakes on my farm......lol.

In German, it would be called a "Weiher", which is somewhere in between a pond (which is often man-made) and a lake. Anyway, those pieces look pretty nice, surely a lovely addition to the existing sets. Flattering background story as well, I like the idea with those SFBT artifacts. ;)

Hey! I grew up in Black Forrescht - where everything that exceeds the dimensions of a bath tube is called "lake" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mummelsee (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mummelsee)). :P

Apart from that, me, personally - if I can fish there, I'd call it water. And if you call it pond or lake or puddle, I'm fine with - as long as you don't force me to drink it and pour me my wine instead.

@ mrbisonm - do you have a rowing club house on your pond and an annual regatta? I guess, I have to put some props there first to make the pond a lake ... ::)

From Wiki: One definition of lake is a body of water of 2 hectares (5 acres) or more in area;[5]:331[6] however, others[who?] have defined lakes as waterbodies of 5 hectares (12 acres) and above,[citation needed] or 8 hectares (20 acres) and above [7] ....

In the Eiffel this size is called a Pond (Weiher or Grosser Teich in German), so it is here in Canada, even if we have lakes that we could drown Germany in them.
No I don't have a regata nor a clubhouse on my pond, but I surely have room for it (see pic below).....lol.....Anyway call it what you want, I only made my opinion on Ponds and Lakes. Your lot looks great, no doubt , although too small for me to use it, since most of my regions are as close to reality as possible, even if they are sci-fi.
Nice LOTting, fantozzi!

Fred

My ponds, my summer home in the circle, some kind of a weekend home (chalet for visitors, Besuch von Deutschland) on the first pond (2.5 acres...maybe a little over 1.5 ha) The other two are bigger and all are connected....and all 3 are Ponds. ;) lol

Oh, sorry, maybe I didn't explain that well - it was in the first post - but this is based on Diggis' stream and pond sets. The lake shown consists of 3 separate lots and it's the minimal size (you can't make it smaller, but ...

now ...  &Thk/( ... by putting Diggs' puzzle pieces in between you can make it as large as you want.

These are nothing else than starter/puzzle pieces on a larger scale to integrate diggs streams/ponds into my Big Paeng Theory or Paengs Park Revisited. Hopefully this become as flexible you can plaster your entire city tile with it if you want.

Wait a minute.(reading the first post that wasn't clear to me)...you say this lot is actually made with 3 different lots? If so, then we would be able to use blank Paeng watertile lots to expand the "in-betweens" to whatever suits us? Now that sounds a lot better than I thought. These are then somewhat of add ons and not an independant lot.........  &mmm

So here's an overview of what else you could do, from left to right: Lake Andreas eastern part V1, alternative Bridge (Lovers Bridge 2), Lake Andreas western part V2, Lake Andreas eastern part V1 (flipped).

Note: apart from eastern part of Lake Andreas all lots are still unfinished.

Hope you enjoy.

In a post above, I wrote, you can't make it smaller. That's not entirely correct. You can take only one of the lots and close the open part with some of Diggi's puzzle pieces or connect a stream etc.

Now, there's a smal problem, I could need some advice.

Unfortunately the 1x1 and 2x2 water pieces by diggis are non-overhanging props and you can't put mmps on them (while on other of his puzzle pieces it (partially works).

Should I create viariants of Diggis 1x1 and 2x2 water tiles with a) a single prop familiy on it - so you can add some random action to your self created ponds? b) - Or should I create different varaintes with 'specialized' prop families - one for dinghies, one for the kayaks, the rubber boats etc ...?

Thank you

@fantozzi
But on the WMP page there is a bunch of MMP from the rowing props... I mean the boats and sculls etc... They've been made for a long time.
WMP Rowing Boats MMP by DocRorlach (WMP) (http://workingman-productions.co.uk/downloads/WMP_Rowing_Boats_MMP.asp)
These are MMPs, I tested them. There are two groups: one for the sculls and one for the others.

I hope it helps, although I don't know the answere for the first question.

Ah, so very nice, so much better than my fledgling attempt at doing this last year !It makes me want to revisit it --  I'd made a country version and an urban version, but was unhappy with the urban version, because I didn't know how to add a pedestrian path to it. Now I know how. Maybe I'll do it with the shingle set, to complement yours. We'll compare notes. :D

Lake Andreas, eastern part, a second, smaller version: without inflow but a small barbecuing area and a hut.

[EDIT]

So 4 parts put together with some additional paeng park pieces and mmp could look like this:

Pieces used from top to bottom_ Lake Andreas East A, Lake Andreas Bridge A, Lake Andreas West B and Lake Andreas Est B.

Great work on merging Paeng's parks with Diggis' work  &apls

Ever considered doing something similar with Murimk's waterfront sets?

It's all looking really cohesive and really useful. Often times in game, it is nice to plop some good-looking pre-assembled pieces, rather than scrolling through lots of different modular stuff   to achieve the same look

Indeed, while those modular items are a god-sent for "filling gaps" (I often use the SFBT park lots for oddly-shaped areas between residential developments), such pre-made lots are a "no-brainer", and we should use them a lot more often in our cities. Things are really coming together nicely here, and I like your attention to detail, such as the picnic area, and the landscaped park with nice flowering trees and bushes.
Title: Re: What should I lot?

Hey - thank you all for the comments. "pre-assembled (mattb325) no-brainers (Andreas)" - yes, to me that matches the intention as each piece (even named ''east" or 'west' can be used as some kind of starter element to be completed/extended with Diggis puzzle pieces and/or paeng park pieces or - if you are as lazy as me - just put them next to each other.

On the other hand - those models by diggis are extremely flat and as puzzle pieces on smaller lots they are noticeable more slope tolerant instead of how I used them on bigger lots. Those pond lots will need very, very flat terrain or ground texture will pop through the water surface (you may even notice it on some of the pictures above).

To combine paeng parks with diggis water you most probably would only need the bridge lots, the lakes or ponds you could create with the puzzle pieces and mmps and it's simply time-saving to have prefab lots, especially on those days you are without creativity and need fast results.

But at this point I have to shed a word or two (= >2000?) ...

... regarding lot editor work vs. mmps. I like to work like a painter, composing with the props a certain picture, sometimes even with some kind of message (funny, serious, spiritual, abstract) and often I want to place props very exactly and overlapping like to mix colours on canvas. Often with mmps I can't achieve the same level of detail (other players can, I think, I saw wonderfull compositions by korver f.e.) - and removing, replacing, trying different combinations of bushes and trees until I got a certain temper/vibe (?) it's much easier for me in LE.

That's the main reason I prefer to create complete lots - to place mmps exactly as I want sometimes can drive me crazy.

For the lake I was inspired by the Neckar-Isle in Tübingen and the Neckar banks, to catch the atmosphere of the early spring days there, actually around eastern time, with the soft rose, the light yellow-green and the dark green brink along the water:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.geo.de%2Freisen%2Fcommunity%2Fbild%2Fregular%2F137073%2FFruehling-am-Hoelderlinturm.jpg&hash=729a4d2e8d24c25f00a1c243009104239860ce39)

But, well, similar colours you could find in the gardens of Souzouh (China) too:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.vancouversun.com%2Flife%2Fcms%2Fbinary%2F11038227.jpg%3Fsize%3D640x420&hash=8dde49380e8f144f5480a6f594ac9d8c90fe3549)

This - maybe: composing something, placing things exactly where I want them (often with the keyboard pixel by pixel) mostly is some kind of fun for me, I can't have the same fun by using mmps.  So I'm doing this not for usefullness of the lots but for the fun of creating a picture, a composition.

Actually, for me personally, after 10 years, LE work is as fun to me as playing the game. Could be, I only play the game to see all the custom content grow and florish - to be delighted by the artwork. To me the game became like some kind of documentary telling about batting, lotting and network art. Like you create super-complex intersections, not because sims really need them to find their way to work but just because you can do it and they look amazing. Basically it could be any game, I play, if it only runs sc4 custom content. I don't need custom content to run the game, I need the game to run the custom content.

So, in some sense, the fun of creating stuff and the fun of playing the game blended/melted into one. Or maybe: lotting or batting is a sort of playing - like an extension of playing the game.

Like Simgoober. He created so much stuff absolutely unnecessary for Sims. Adult shops. Animarted crime. But still - fun. And games are about fun. That's what they are made for. So at the end - you can't judge content only by usefullness (like on applications made for work/business) - at least on games a valid factor of custom content is the fun it creates, the delight (and this factor can exist for itself, apart from usefullness or 'quality' on everything that in generall is called 'entertainment'). Fun doesn't need to be sophisticated or clever to be fun. Fun can still exist when all serious things, all logic and usefullness are absent, thrown overboard.

And therefore every serious game has a nude patch.

Except of SC4. Which has - as a workaround - a Fantozzi hanging around here and doing sometimes lots.

Indeed, excellent work of "lotting" especially as the lots that juxtapose "puzzle way" are probably the most complicated to create!  &apls &apls &apls
I do not know if you are open to suggestions, but I see that you use for your flower beds props quite old (SimGoober I guess).
There are props in HD very recent and really beautiful in the same style made by Romualdillo (LEX) including hydrangeas and lavender that can be used in flower bed or "without base".
On the other hand, there are also wooden benches and HD lamps made by KrashSpeed in its Historic Harbor https://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/29880-historic-harbor/. This set is downloaded more than 13000 times but almost never used "in dependancy" by "lotters" while it includes props truly sublime and very useful (bench, lamps, sheds, fence, and others) and all in HD.
Title: Re: What should I lot?

Every suggestion is welcome.

On the props I limited it to conform paengs park layout (benches, fences and lampposts by Murimk) and the props already used in the Big Paeng Theory (except for the water stuff, that wasn't present there).

I use old and and new props, HD and non-HD - these aren't categories I reflect much about when using them. I don't want to limit my creativity this way. I always think: why deciding 'this or that' if I can have both.

Like those discussions what is the best city builder game - if I can play all of them, why should I bother with this question? What is best this, what is best that. Leads to a thinking were you become limited to a few options instead of expanding your possibilities.

I guess - the same on props. Long, long dependency lists I get in return ...

Okay, being so impressed and inspired by MattB325 and Simmer2, I'll finish my summer break from SC4.

Next two lotting projects I'd like to do are "Via Appia" and "Dehoust". "Via Appia" ist the code name ( :o) for a more advanced Version of my
"Mass Tourism Idea" ( https://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/31171-mass-tourism/ (https://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/31171-mass-tourism/)) making use of nos17 superb textures (  https://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/30114-nos17-essentials/  (https://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/30114-nos17-essentials/) ).

Basically it will be a mix of parking and park lots for building (a) a two tile wide meridian between two one way roads and (b) one tile wide roadside parking/park on the outer side - so, in summ, to create really big an majestic and monumental avenues and boulevards like you may knoew from Paris and Rome - were streets are more than for running traffic but being public spaces of multiple function. Once I did even see a car repair in Rome filling the meridian auf the Via Appia Nova close to Piazza Re di Roma.

If you look on the next picture (view down Via Appia Nuova in direction of Piazza Re di Roma in Rome) you may notice that the large boulevards in Rome look very different form SC4, because of the big meridian with trees they look more like green lines between the houses, not black or grey lines.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbim.rootiers.it%2Fsites%2Fdefault%2Ffiles%2Fusers%2FCarrubba_Saccucci%2Fimago.png%3F266&hash=329ff8ed41df03e5bb7892a40586b536ed858a1b)

So I try to make set of lots to build the same but also usable as bus parking an to create touristic zones.

There isn't much jet, I'm experimenting with props and textures, still learning an trying to find a concept, a masterplan.

Hi!

It sounds interesting. I have a spot where an innercity highway goes underground but before that it leaves two OWR3 on surface to reach shops and streets... It would be usefull for me on that spot.
I'm about the reuse and regroup JENX and Porkie parisian houses, making new lots with building families etc...
Well keep up the good work! :)

Title: Re: What should I lot?
Post by: Tyberius06 on October 05, 2018, 10:06:04 AM
Oh, yepp. :)

I made a Mirrored version of the original parking lots from nos.17 to give a better support for OWRs... Although I never released or shared those lots. I think I used them once before I went on full lotting and prepping mode (first my Essential with the timed props, than the rail and GLR stations)...
I think for that median you need to make a "mirrored" version as well - I mean mirroring the diagonal parking lines.

By the way, what are those "new" bus props? I can recognize the other types which are Motokloss's creations, but I can't recall the light-blue-ish double decker.

I'll take the opportunity and include a few new car and bus props – what would be mass tourism without those convertible cars in between the busses and people with sun glasses doing the line in front of the restroom facilities? Those thinking, they do individual tourism and doing the same as everybody else. It's a much too early stage to say what will be the final content. But from my imagination it should fit indeed very beautifully with those european w2w sets.

Title: Re: What should I lot?
Post by: fantozzi on October 08, 2018, 02:32:08 AM
Thank you Matt, but except of creating very simple things I have no talent for batting. But I have found a quite solid pipeline to bring Sketchup models from the 3D Warehouse  (https://3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/model/335795e7ab1cb5d84d44f5db04bf14b8/Green-bus) into gmax/B.A.T.

Maybe someone is interested how I do that, so I'll take oportunity to briefly explain. It's quite simple even a country bumkin like me can do that.

First you have to know that KMZ-Files (native Google-Earth Format) are nothing else than zip-packed Collada files. So you download a dae- or a kmz-file form the 3D warehouse. The ending ".kmz" you change into zip, extract it and - voilá - you have a dae file too.

Now Blender is a perfect tool to handle dae-(collada)files. It's not always necessary but to my experience sometimes it is helpfull to open the collada file in Blender first, check if there are some unwanted nodes or objects etc. Often you want to simplify scenes before you bring them into gmax, sometimes you want only a certain element to puzzle it together with other objects ect. This preparation I do in Blender first because it is much faster than old B.A.T.

Now the trick ist not to export in 3ds from blender. But save from Blender as collada again. Blender can export 3ds but those never work with gmax for me.

Instead there is a tool (to my knowledge it was written by a flight simulator fan) especially for gmax and the modding community It is called ModelConverterX and can be downloaded here (https://www.scenerydesign.org/modelconverterx/).

Most of the times this tool will work immediatly with kmz or collada files to convert them into 3ds-files keeping UV-mapping and all. So you won't need Blender as an intermediate step at all. But if it fails loading a file it's worth to check the file with Blender.

So to be true, I'm not a gifted batter like you, I'm just a rotten thief ... an artist with the crowbar perhaps  &prt

I reworked the busses from jesterday a bit.

Now, what we have here ...

...upper side of the street from left to right:

Setra bus with green-orange Flixbus painting, Irizar Bus with fantasy painting "Travel" color saturation reduced by 20% and brightness increased by 5 percent. Mercedes Jetbus 4-Wheels with "Deutsche Touring" painting. Mercedes Jetbus 6-Wheels with Eurolines paiting and again a Mercedes Jetbus 6-Wheels (upper) with Lufthansa painting. Below this a volvo 9700 also with lufthansa painting. Then a ultramodern Marcopolo coach in black and green painting from brazilia (unknown company). And finally on the right another volvo 9700 this time with a Eurolines painting.

Ah yes, the blue looks much better now. :) Not sure where you got that Lufthansa design, though, all photos that I found had just white and that yellow bar (or an arrow shape as a new design, apparently). The set looks very spiffy alright, though!

Thanks. Indeed, it's intellectual freedom on the Lufthansa busses. I spent much time on the Lufthansa volvo but the more I look on it this morning the more it reminds me of a Milka-cow. Maybe I drop this one. Also the volvo model looks too box-shaped on the nose in SC4.

I think there are 15 different busses (x 2 angles), maybe I'll make a few more and then kill the worst. This turned out to be a good method for me to boost quality - always make more than needed and then delete the worst.

I want to make two timed families - one family from february to june, the other family from august to november. So to put both families on one parking space to get the effect of coming and going. I think 6 members for each family  is enough, so I need 12 different busses.

But maybe I need 3 families with shorter period to get effect?  ??? What do you think?
Title: Re: What should I lot?
Post by: mattb325 on October 13, 2018, 12:27:59 AM
The updated buses look great

I liked the timed idea: it's up to you of course about how many you include per timing, but I guess 3 will make it feel a little busier and more like the effect of coming and going....
Title: Re: What should I lot?

Okay, so I'll go with 3 timed families. So I still need some busses.

Another thing: I want to realize the Sims Nations Transport or Aviation Museum this winter too. An idea by Airman15.
It could look like this:
but I would need two buildings, I can't make them on my own, even if they are (hopefully easy of shape). One for the Entrance and one L-Shaped with a round Dome in the corner. I imagine the facade of both mainly glass, like the Congress Center in Frankfurt, Germany:

Question: is someone willing to do such buildings or has someone an idea which bats I could use instead that exist already and would made a good lokking Aviation museums. Again - help or suggestions welcomed.

Still I need input for my former question: is there a tutorial how to make street lamps functional, so they effuse light at night?Thank you all for your support.

The new buses look really good!

There was a tutorial floating around about how to attach the Maxis high-wealth glow and other lightcones to a lamppost model using the reader, but I can't for the life of me find it anymore. I believe it was by either jeronij or deadwoods, but it was years ago and a google search returns nothing. You might have to use the light cones in the BSC packs as a compromise if no one else has it bookmarked....

Edit: found it, it was by deadwoods...here. I knew I hadn't completely forgotten: https://community.simtropolis.com/omnibus/simcity-4/bat-lot-editor-tutorials/creating-custom-working-light-props-r57/ (https://community.simtropolis.com/omnibus/simcity-4/bat-lot-editor-tutorials/creating-custom-working-light-props-r57/)

As for the building, I would take a look at Ill Tonkso's stuff. He did a lot of round and low-rise glass offices buildings...otherwise even the ingame advanced research center could fit the bill (maybe  :D )

Thank you Matt, for excavating the tutorial from the depth of the web. It sounds complicated, but often it's because english isn't my native tongue. Well ... atm I don't understand much.

Small update. What would be mass tourism without a kebap stand? Sometimes it's kebap, sometimes it's kebab. Seems there is no rule on how to exactly spell it.

Looks like there's quite a bit of kebap kompetition on that parking lot. ;) And I guess we need a German "Döner" stand as well. The "Kebap" in "Döner Kebap" is often omitted here, like "Pommes" or "Fritten" for "Pommes frites" (french fries).

Thanks, but not this way - so busses doing the one way road never will get in.  :D  First I'll do the props for my "mass tourism project", then I'll do the lots.

But if you can't wait - nos17 did some nice bus parkings with his textures already here: https://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/31359-nos17-streetside-parking-ssp/

Really nice work on these! I like these kebab stands, I can't recall actually to many actuall kebab restaurants in SC4, however they are growing like mushroom in the busy city centers at least in Europe. In the middle of Budapest I know there are a lot of them in nice w2w areas... Vieanna, Munich I remember they are the same in this aspect.

Anyway I like this project of yours!

What would mass tourism be ...

... without the famous Möwenpick Diners?

Möwenpick, a swiss diner chain was founded in 1948 and became well know in europe when they builded many diners along the highways running from north to south, connecting germany and italy, where in the late fithies and sixties germans loved to travel and occupating the mediterranian beaches in summer. Möwenpick offered fresh and light food, salads, mediterranian dishes, ideal for travellers. The diners mostly could be found in airports or near highways.

Behind the Möwenpick diners stands the Möwenpick Group, a big swiss food label Möwenpick (known f.e. also Möwenpick icecream) which started in 1978 to renaming all their diners into "Marché" (https://www.marche-int.com/en), making it sounding more french. Instead some few diners did remain under the original Name "Möwenpick" and were slowly build up to be high class restaurants.

Ah, those are nice!
By the way, are those food vans yours, or you found them on the internet and brought them to SC4? I'm asking, because I'm missing general delivery van props (3,5t), like Fiat Ducatto Maxi, Opel/Vauxhall Movano, Mercedes Sprinter etc.. from the game. And that food one is very similiar to them, but this one is BOXed, what I'm looking for is not.
Anyway nice work on these props!

Yes, I take my models from the 3dwarehouse or Archive3D. The beverage van should be an older model of the Renault Master:

(https://img.ricardostatic.ch/crop?width=800&height=600&url=https://ricardo-images-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/product/live/801414133_v1_1&token=e1953c77a0f9918b27bfe6a1945b7a89)

I think I have only boxed models atm. But there is a nice 3,5t transporter by Vnaoned in the vip car pack vol. 1 (https://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/26808-vip-carpack-vol1/)

Definetelly the LEX version doesn't have Vnaoned cars in it, but I recognize the girafe cars... However I don't know if they are identical or using different IIDs...

My solution was to download all the french car prop files and datpack them into a single dat. If IDs would be different datpacker would keep them, if IDs are the same, datpacker would skip the duplicates. But I can't remember anymore what datpacker did report.  &ops

Title: Re: What should I lot?
Post by: fantozzi on November 24, 2018, 11:49:22 PM
Okay, inside the game the Hef-Fountain will be named Nymph-Fountain. People skilled in art history may know that there is little diffference between a classical nymph and a modern playmate. One could even say playmates are daughters of the nymph.  ::) The only difference is in ancient times they were holy spirits nowadays they are less holy objects of erotic industries. But, well, some people even call playmates still "goddesses".  :D

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Something completely different:

Getting some inspiration by Korver and a poem from austrian poetry-legend Ernst Jandl, I spent the last days shaping a soldiers cemetery, released here:

https://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=3730 (https://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=3730)

The peom by Enrst Jandl is called "Vater komm erzähl vom Krieg." (C'mon father tell me about war)

I'd like to do a translation in english. But there are two major problems. First the language he uses isn't written german but a very familial, slightly austrian slang. It's like a country bumpkin talking, a naive but friendly person, hail-fellow-well-met, close, naturally, avoiding the high sound of artistic language.

But on the other hand the poem has a rythm like the drums on a galley, in fact like marching troups or a hammer on an anvil. This contrast of a friendly country bumpkins language and a marching rythm makes the poem great.

So I invite everyone to take part in the translation and make it better.

Vater komm erzähl vom Krieg

vater komm erzähl vom krieg
vater komm erzähl wiest eingrückt bist
vater komm erzähl wiest gschossen hast
vater komm erzähl wiest verwundt worden bist
vater komm erzähl wiest gfallen bist
vater komm erzähl vom krieg

C'mon father tell me about war
C'mon father tell me how you were conscripted
C'mon father tell me how you fired guns
C'mon father tell me how you were injured
C'mon father tell me how you fell
C'mon father tell me about war

I think the rythm is easy, because of the constant repetition it becomes automatically repetitive, marching. But I can do only written english and this is wrong on this poem - it looses all the laconicism of the reduced language of the dialect. The verb "wiest" f.e. doesn't exist in written german it means "wie du" (how you). So he really say something: "C'mon father tellma how'st you shoot" Something like this - the dialect's phonetics invade the written language. You know what I mean? Well if someone could bring the right slang into the poem I would be happy. So if you want to give a helping hand feel free to post your versions of this poem here. Thank you!

Let's call this a promotion campaign for my latest lot, okay? So it's still on topic I guess?

Shure signs Major Fantozzi came up with a winter depression are:

- he wants to discuss everything
- he crabs epic
- he hates his own creation.
- his plans and thought loose direction: what today is a yes tomorrow is a no.

So! I don't like the foundatons of all the fountains I made so far. Because of the stone and brick textures I used, they look so blurry. I will redo them with simple concrete:

Second Thing: a brief roadmap

My "Via Appia Project" lost a little the goal - or maybe I lost the goal of this Project. So I decided to split it up in two parts.

FIRST I will make a big prop pack with all kind of "street/city elements, which, hopefully will become a basic mega prop pack. If you are interested to add this or that prop having a lonely life un your hard disk - regard my pack as an open house. Or maybe my stuff should go into some other mega pack? Maybe we could throw all our things together into a new BSC mega pack? Only limit: I won't include idustry stuff - it should be strictly residential/office oriented street elements/beautification stuff. Go for Simmer 2 San if you need that dirty industry.

SECOND the Via Appia Project will be uploaded seperatly as a set of lots making use of the new prop pack.

I have no timeline but I can't finish this for christmas - the progress is extremely slow and my RL if is a big mess. Maybe around easter 2019 there will be both?

Lately some very interestng things happened with great relevance to my future projects. These are Simmer 2 prop packs and a set of harbour cranes issued by Linus van Pelt recntly (https://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/32611-linus-van-pelt-harbour-cranes-set-1/). Those props together screaming to me I should redo my harbour project - by the time I did I was very limited (just looking on those props I got many great ideas to make things better, bigger, steampunk. I think now with all the brilliant work by Simmer 2 - it will be possible to create some kind of "Mega Seaport Mod". The only remaining problem is, I don't understand how the custom seaport controllers (pegasus/bsc) work so I can't create working seaports for now. But as there is already my Rural Docklands Expansion (RDE) (https://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/31497-rural-docklands-expansion-rde/)  - with some help this could be finished until christmas 2019.

Don't know if I'm the only one using gmax, but in case - I use two slim boxes (the lower one can also be a plane, doesn't matter) and two textures to create the water texture. So I can easily vary pattern (offset, turning etc.) and also color (opacity of the upper box) and give variation. Also thanks to the transparency of the upper box you'll get a shadow on the corners which adds depth to the water surface. Sometimes I put some specular effect/colour on the upper box. Well, like most of those things, it's a question of playing around and finding a good result.

I'll attach the two water textures in case you want to experiment yourself.

Hi Fantozzi!

First of all I really like the idea that you wish to create a mega prop pack with all these stuffs what you've showed. These new fountain and statue/sculpture and bus and other props are really nice and will be really usefull for others (like me) in future projects.

Second:

QuoteLately some very interestng things happened with great relevance to my future projects. These are Simmer 2 prop packs and a set of harbour cranes issued by Linus van Pelt recntly. But as there is already my Rural Docklands Expansion (RDE)  - with some help this could be finished until christmas 2019.

Same here. I'll plan to totally revamp the Heretic Seaport Set, for exactly the same reason (phase 1: give some facelift to the existing set. Phase 2: creating a Heretic Seaport Set II. with new stuffs). Angry Mozarts railcar and truck props, Simmer2's wonderfull industrial stuffs, the LvP Cranes etc... there a bunch of new stuffs. And I have the same plans regarding adding new seaports to the existing controllers. Well or something like that, but I have the same problem, lack of understanding about how those things are working. :)

Anyway I can't wait to see more from your projects! They are really awesome! :)

Fantozzi, Tibi, what about merging your projects? They are basically a complement to reach other right now, and you will surely the same set of props and textures, aside from some duplicate modular pieces that could work on both. You can reduce the workload that way, and to create a sort of standard for water transportation, easing the choose of a mod for new players.

Tibi is always welcome to suggest props and stuff. I downloaded already some vans from the 3D warehouse to add them to this pack.

But, I'm afraid the Heretic Seaport Project (https://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=3403) and the RDE have not much in common to be thrown together. I'd be glad to assist on Heretic Seaport Project if I can be of any help - put it is to build modern container/freight port - those big transit sites where complete containers switch from water to rail and road.

To find the RD port you have still to move fifty miles upstream, where f.e. the Mersey river is half as deep and the old dock of Liverpool is - best times where 100 years ago, the big ships even can't get here and the business is smaller and everything picks up rust. That is the world of the RDE: to create inland ports with dozends of corners along the river banks where the CDK-3 puzzle pieces are too big.

To me, personally, the CDK-3 stuff was pretty mixed old style and modern style harbours, the warehouses don't fit container ports. It's a little bit modern ports with most of the busy work done by robots and those older, laid-back harbour parts, dealing with bits and pieces and scrap metal. RDE is for the laid back old skool harbor. There is not a single container lot in the RDE.

AND - I wanted to promote the Doc Rohrlach stuff explicit. I dedicated the RDE to him and I really would feel bad to drop his layout/scheme now.

The RDE is some kind of a niche product. I don't think it is a good idea to mix it into something so big and universal as the HS.

And sadly - most probably I won't have the time to work on the Heretc Seaport. But I'd like to do the car transfer dockt f.e. I'd like to bring it to the HS - it fits the HS better than the RDE imho. If I'm allowed I could do some lots for the HS.

From my personal view, the HS would need a more modern look. The pegasus warehouses look a bit wrong for a modern container port.

In sum one could say, thanks to the new props from SM2 the HS could shape profile this way:

And the RDE could shape profile this way:

On the RDE are only mid sized ships and river barges. That's what I would like to do regarding the RDE. Making it more the old style/midsized inland port with old business like coal and gravel and cement but no containers and plush elephants from china - because the big business is running on the new port at the estuary of the river where ships has tripled their size.

;D EDIT ;D

To sum up: I think not about throwing both mods together, but we could plan both projects together - we could discuss what kind of lots for the heretic seaport project what for the rural docklands. I have some pretty cool ideas for the HS.

For example I have this container hoist model:

Which I want to turn into a timed prop to do action like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lpgL7d1eL8 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lpgL7d1eL8)

But for train. So with AngryMozarts props this should fit peerfectly to the HS - what do you think Tiberius?

Don't forget that I already made a couple of container cranes just for this purpose. I'm hoping to have some time over the holidays to make a couple of port lots as well.
They are in my prop packs, use them. I also made some reach stackers. You can see one at the bottom right on the last pic

Why the hell everybody is talking german today? But no, no, no Simmer2, you are absolutely right to point me in the right direction. Your comment was helpfull. Don't stop this. Please do correct me. It would be much, much, much worse you stayed silent.

"Respektlosigkeit"? My translation tool tells me you mean "disrespect"? are you joking? What you did for the community demands respect! If you would say today: "Fantozzi, show some respect!" - you know, I would agree. How can you be disrespectfull against me? I don't understand this sentence. I owe you respect. And you are right. Absolutely right.

So! I don't like the foundatons of all the fountains I made so far. Because of the stone and brick textures I used, they look so blurry. I will redo them with simple concrete:

I think I've posted this elsewhere (I already had the pics in my imgur account, so I must have!) If you ever find that the materials are blurry in gmax, know that the default in the material editor is set to blur = 1.0. That is usually the best setting for 95% of the textures, but you can change that for each bit map if one looks too blurry. The reason for blurriness on some textures and not others comes down to the type and size of the image that you are using. In SD it is almost imperceptible, but I suspect that those of you who render in HD will need to pay close attention to each map used.

This is the default gmax setting:

You can change it to this. See how much sharper the bricks look:

This will hopefully help with some of the 'massaging' that poor old gmax needs to work  :)

Thank you Matt! I'll have to try immediatly if I can get certain elements on the fountain sharper.

#######################################################
To avoid confusion: I'm german. My father was italian, born in Rome. My mother ... that's a little complicated. Her first document said:"coequal to german." This was a speciality of the Nazis. She is born in Teplice - that's czech, but by the time she was born there the land was german. The parents of my mother came from austria. Spring of 1944 she was banished with her family -I think that was the time she became german. The Czech administration thought they are germans, because they were speaking german and her father working for the Nazi gouvernement, so they didn't care much about they were austrians.

So I'm german by chance. My brother for example was italian. He was born in Rome.
And now the fun part He was baptized in the papal archbasilica of St. John in Lateran. That's the church the plaza has its name from were the obelisk stands (see previous page). And now guess what: this is exactly the plaza from where the boulevard Via Appia starts. And - look how's true all roads leading to Rome! – I'm BACK ON TOPIC! Hurrah!   ()stsfd()

Did you know ...

... oh, wrong thread but anyway ...

... did you know there is a
Tiberian Island

in Rome?

And on this island lives Tibi!

No, untrue. But on this island is a church and in front of this church is a plaza and on this plaza is a monument dedicated to Saint Bartholomew.

Saint Bartholomew was one of the twelve apostles. His martyrdom begann 9/11. He was flayed.

So sad, that I had to rescale the monument for despot major Fantozzi. A big despot requires a big monument in my opinion.

Ah, and by the way, that's the Thompson Mausoleum next to the Despot Fantozzy monument. Located in York, Engand.

Very sad story. Henry Thompson builded it to be a familiy mausoleum, 55 years old, thinking he would be the first resident there. Instead it was his own daughter who died soon after the mausoleum was completed in 1742. He himself became 92 years old and vistied his daughter each day in this mausoleum build in old hellenistic style, I guess.

It is still very dominating even if it as been scaled down  ;)

If I can some batting tips for this model (which I really like), I would thin the two top semi-circle arcs in both thickness and width.
The bottom one on top of the columns looks to be about 1.2m thick: I would take this to 0.6/0.7m; the top arc looks to be 0.5; I would make this no thicker than 0.3m and make it no wider that the circular base on which the scales of justice monument rests. The stone behind the despot similarly can be thinned by approximately 50% and will give a much more elegant result while still maintaining the heavy-set, dominating presence.

Thank you, Matt. I'll try this. Also Thompson Mausoleum needs a socket I think, otherwise it looks somewhat incomplete.

Sadly those days before christmas becoming stressfull and while certain people demand to have certain project finished before christmas (why is christmas such a popular closing date even for things completely unrelated to christmas?) also my old mother wants me to drive her here and there because she has a lot of purchases to resolve. ("Mother why don't you get Internet!" "Because I don't need it, son." - Shure she don't need if she has her own chauffeur!).

Well, yesterday - when driving my mother around, I saw this street clock, I think it's a replica form early 20. century, not shure:

I'd like to add some streetclocks of this kind. Don't know, if I can do them. I'll have to try.

So sorry, if there are (most probably) no new updates before christmas. I'm still here. And I will continue. At my age SC4 is much more pleasant than sex. A game that doesn't raise your blood preassure and cause lumbage. There's no reason for me to run away. Else from the question: "Darling, it's a while ago we last ..."

No, for real. At my age SC4 is like dad's garage. One of the last peacefull places on earth. You say "go fishing" or you say "go batting". Those are synonyms.

Therefore: I'll be back soon.

Still didn't resume my project.

Want to tell a story instead. It could be some kind of postcard I'd like to send to city builders colleagues in the United States. With greetings from germany.

When you travel from the center towards the southern borders of my hometown, the city of Heidelberg, you may notice a lot of big gaps in the house building, even strange holes in the middle of urban cultivation, stripes of fallow land, where there's gras growing now.

You can see big mounds as if the city is plagued by a giant monster mole.

And the more you travel south the traces seems to be younger and you get closer to the mysterious force doing some large scale surgery on the face of the city of Heidelberg.

Not many people – and I have to believe neither Mr. Donald Trump nor Mr. Vladimir Putin are amongst them – seem to know what's going on there in my hometown these days, in the middle of Europe. Those gaps in the cultivation are gaps from cold war and the force making them is called peace. There's an entire village to be bulldozed ... to be cut out of the body of the city of Heidelberg and the present landscape. And it's no german village but an american village being destroyed.

I bet you didn't know that. Evil Germans are destryoing an entire american village in 2018/2019! This village was home of the 7th United States Army, solders, families, teachers, doctors and other kind of entourage. 7th US Army did cross rhine river in march 1945, freed the concentration camp of Dachau and kicked the Nazis out of southern germany. They made my home a free country and this is something never should be forgotten, even if there are growing blackberries and wild cherries now where they had home.

After WWII they settled at Heidelberg to protect the free world against the Soviet Union, serving at the Campbell Barracks, the european headquarter of the united stats army and hosting several NATO commands. But times changed and with disarment treaties, the fall of the iron curtain the ban of nuclear midrange missles, Chernobyl and Fukushima and all other new problems the fears changed and the believe grew this part of history would be irreversible. World would never again return back to cold war. Western World was conviced on this.

So between 2006 and 2014 piece by piece forces were reduced and the 7th US Army finally returned back home (after 60 years abroad!) and the land was given back to germany, the city of Heidelberg. On September 7th 2013 in a moving final retreat ceremony the american flag was pulled down for the last time in Campbell Barracks. The village became abandoned.

So for us, the citizens of Heidelberg, on this day cold war ended finally. In 2014 we eagerly started to tear down the old military barracks and plant something new, modern - supermarkets and apartment buildings. There is a bycicle shop now where they used to keep rifles and grenades.

But can you figure out how I feel currently? Everyday I pass those building sites where they burring cold war - and we aren't even finished, we are half the way done and those politic brains made from ferroconcrete start the whole thing anew. It feels grotesque. And I guess no one who moved in shortly ago in those brand new apartments wants to give them back immediatly again to make barracks from it again.

Hi fantozzi!

I'm testing a new plugin folder with cam 2.1, and I'm always on the lookout for new camified buildings. Thank you for your recent uploads!

I have grown all the Shriefer buildings, but I do have an issue with one of them - 667 Madison is showing a brown box. I have the model from the original, and I've tried both the DN and MN, demolished it and re-grew it, but still have the brown box. Can you take a look at that one please?

Thanks!

Thanks for reporting, owlsinger.

This could be my fault. In march 2018 Schriefer updated the bat and I think I confused the old and the new version, deleted the new and kept the old instead.

Please give me a few days to test this.

I tried this 5 years ago when I was a lotting newbie ... and I failed terrible. NICK's latest releases encouraged me to try it again.

1.The real thing: BASF Ludwigshafen, the chemical city on 10 square kilometers with roundabout 2000 facilities and 39.000 employees, 106 km of street. own rail yard with 230 kilometers of rail, 2800 kilometers of pipes ... with their own fire brigade and clinic.

In short: the biggest chemical production facility in the world.

2. The plan - dividing this facility into 4 lots to get a little bit close to the real thing but still usable inside the game.

3. Inside this facility there are driving fully autonomous transporter, carrying standardized tanks of different colours from the facility to the logistic center (next tu the rail is the river with docks - so they have a perfect network hub there:

(https://imgr1.eurotransport.de/BASF-optimiert-Logistik-am-Standort-Ludwigshafen-BASF-optimizes-logistics-at-Ludwigshafen-site-articleDetail-4cea2e7a-291568.jpg)

So those autonomous vehicles run around and deliver to the point where the autonomous lift bridge pick up the tanks.

And if I could get a little help with those autonomious vehicles and the tanks with BASF logo I would be very glad. But most of the stuff - again thanks tio Simmer2 - is now there to make this project something sucessfull.

I will need also some high farts (or what is the correrct english word?):

But I will try to create this on my own.

But if someone wants to support this little project with an autonomious transporter or any stuff with the BASF logo on it or 2000 facilities (kidding) you are very wellcome!

Thank you

Ah, yes. A successfull day.

HopeIDS2 can forgive me one day ... but I turned his 100 Washgington Square from Minneapolis (https://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/28912-100-washington-square/) into the BASF hedaqarter.

Unsuccessful day.

And still I don't know how this thing is called in English. In german it's a "Hochfackel" used to flare gasses you have no need for. Often seen in oil recovery.

Left is the one by Somy. So much better than mine. It has this overscaled steps and on each pipe (who would build four times the same access  ()what() ) - one step as large as a floor of the IDS2 building. Wo would climb there? But still its a much more interesting bat, better detailed. I must confess I like Somy's much more than mine.

Im very proud to present you ...

the first AGV (automated guided vehicle) for SC4. This AGV manufactured by VDL Automated Vehicles (https://www.vdlautomatedvehicles.com/) in Netherlands can load upt 78 tons and thanks to 8 stearable axis drive on normal roads.

The AGV reads information from transponders under the paving and therefore is guided. It runs fully electric.

Now that looks pretty cool - and recreating the entire BASF sounds like a HUGE project alright! Did you make that fire truck as well? The BASF Werksfeuerwehr has some really interesting custom fire engines alright! Oh yeah, and if you search for "Hochfackel" at Wikipedia, you can find out the English term by clicking on the "English" link. ;)

I like the term 'high farts' much better than gas flare  &hlp

You models are looking really good and the re-purposing of IDS's building is very believable

Tag_one and citynut also made some modular props for oil/gas works
(I think this one: https://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/15924-rnp-refinery-props/) and would be quite useful for your project assuming you don't already have it

Fantozzi I believe the proper name for that type of stack is "Flare Stack". Your reference to flatulence (your translation) is commonly referred as "Blue Flame" :D

Flare stacks are used in the chemical and petrochemical industries to safely dispose of excess gases through combustion. These may be unwanted waste gases, or flammable gases released to prevent unplanned  over-pressurising of plant equipment.

Simply venting these untreated hydrocarbons into the air creates an environmental hazard.  Burning these gases is less harmful – for example, if methane is burned to produce carbon dioxide  and steam, it is less damaging than releasing methane.

Environmental regulations require close monitoring of the flare stack to prevent pollutants, particularly unburned hydrocarbons, from entering the atmosphere.

I could make some BASF based models. Actually I think I made some oil tanks with that logo a while ago. Making 2000 BASF based models seems a bit daunting though   &Thk/(

I will post a pic or 2 soon-ish.

Simmer2

Edit* I just cobbled this flare stack together with some spare parts I had laying around. Oh and by the way, there is a small flame animation available that can be used on top of the model once rendered. Again this is just one example.
Flare stacks come in many different variations.

@Andreas: glad to read you again. I missed you for some weeks. The freight part - should I make it a functional cargo rail station or just eye candy with IH-M jobs? The southern part is planned as I-M, there is the visitors center and the administration. Center and north are planned as I-D. As there will 12.000 or 15.000 jobs in total - I thought to split them up into different types. But there are several possibilites to split up the type of jobs. Any suggestions? Thank you. The fire truck is just a repaint of the one made for my THW lot (https://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=3543). The "Notarzt" (emergency doctor's car?) is a new prop.

@Matt: Thank you. Well BASF doing this kind of press releases on the local level. "Sorry we have a rest of unneeded gas in our pipes. We'll deflate tomorrow night. Sorry for the inconvencience." Well they do exactly the same thing as me ("Excuse me Sir, I have to go to the balcony for an instant"). Only on a larger scale.
Tag_one and citinuts both already planned as props (together with Simmer 1 - 3)

@Simmer2: Your fart flare stack is perfect! Stunning - you nailed what I had in mind  Great stuff. Maybe to make it a little less higher than this monster by Somy? You are so kind! You make me feel excited about this project. I wrote a response over at your thread.

Thanks to you all.

EDIT (much later)
Looking on your flare stack again made me wonder if the last part of the outher structure could be removed?

Imho above the last transverse joint it's of no function. Maybe.

I'm afraid I can't go at your speed.  :o This is absolutely fantastic.  There are left a few little gaps hopefully I can close myself. Maybe this project can be finished until eastern. What you showed here is extremely helpfull matching perfectly how I plan/imagine the lots. Exciting!

Can you please put those props into one of your Mega packs?

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Looking at your pictures it crossed my mind to use rivits tarsealed road textures on the lot. The road textures need to have wider curves. With the heavy traffic those 90 degree curves on 1x1 tiles will look silly. Another solution could be the texture pack rencently released by mgb. Which exactly contains such road overlays for lotting.

Thank you.

I will bake a couple more Iveco trucks (orthos, 45 etc) and then I will pass what I have made to you. As you build the ensemble and require more models, let me know.
Once you are finished, I will then add them to either SM2 Mega Prop Pack Vol3 or depending on the timing I may release SM2 Mega Prop Pack Vol4 because I already have compiled quite a few new model for other projects.

Today I wanted to show to you my footbridge that is like a younger brother to Simmer2's pipe overpass. But like two teenage sisters eager to disturb the boys lazy hang out ...  %BUd% ... two palm trees had to grow quite in front of the footbridge: "look how beautiful we are! Why looking on those ugly yellow guys if we are in this room too? No one cares for them. Because now we are here."

So instead I can tell you about Rivit who offered his help with the overlay textures made from his famous tarsealed roads and to focus on this part of the picture instread. Now with Rivit and Simmer 2 supporting this project I feel a little bit pressure behind. The little sheep carried away by two giants. What if I change my mind tomorrow?  :slap: ? fantozzi I wanted to draw your attention on the autocarriers you made. On the top picture you can see that your chemical tanks are clipping in to the autocarriers when you look at the them from that angle. The reason is because of those railings/signs? hanging on the side. They look to be a bit higher than the deck. Either remove them or lower them.
The deck has to be perfectly flat so that you won't get LODs clipping.

Btw I have an update on the project over on my thread.

The question is legitimate. I didn't really want to talk about it but now, as you ask ... at a certain point I made bigger and bigger monuments and lost scope that I wanted to to do a pack with smaller street stuff for the "Via Appia Project", with the busses and the fountains. And then I had a long break with doing nothing (sadly this happens quite often but nothing serious).

Now the plan is - for the BASF project I'll do some of the the street stuff too, road signs, a few car props like the ambulance, the poles etc. Also in some other releases like the THW etc. there are some nice props. I'll put this all together abd make a MEGA STREET PROP PACK. But this will require much more time than initially thought.

You once wrote you miss some vans, Tibi. Didn't forget this. The BASF project isn't even a break from the other project. It's a stop over to collect even more street props.

I want to have this in the game. If no one shows interest, I'll do it myself with GMax. Even if it's a terrible waste of beauty.

This was easy to create. I took some exotic military vehicle and ripped of the machine gun. Next took some star wars fighter and ripped of the laser gun. I put the laser gun on top of the military car sawed the tips of the laser and painted everything red.

Hard to believe some of those trucks simply melted down in the terrible accident in 2016 when 4 firefighters died, one after 11 months in hospital. In a chain reaction a pipe with ethylen, a pipe with propylen and then a pipe with gasoline exploded. By this time a tanker full with ethylhexanol was at the BASF pier and had to be protected with a firefighting vessel.

Scaring how it turned out those water turbines were only toys against the fire's power.

DPD - formerly known as "Deutscher Paketdienst", today named "Dynamic Parcel Distribution"(well "static distribution" would be a problem, right?) in Germany is number 8 in logistics.

Mercedes, the CLA stands for Compact, Leicht (light), and the A stands for "entry class.

S, like mercedes CLS, stands for Special Class. So maybe A stands for average?  ()what()

Believe it or not but while I'm working on the central part, I'm still not shure about the general layout.

Firsrt thing I'll have to change is to divide the central part or "main part" into two pieces.

This is to keep the crime issue in balance. Otherwise the center part would be too big.

Still this might change.

Fantozzi please do not take this the wrong way.

You may want to tone down those job numbers a bit. Socioeconomic maps will be left in shambles if you suddenly drop that many jobs on the table.
When I make those colossal lots I make sure the job numbers are minimal so as not to impact the city's and regional economy too hard.

Off course its just a suggestion .

Title: Re: What should I lot?

@Simmer2,

didn't mention: I changed the AGV as you said, lowered the LOD and rerendered them and indeed the chemical tanks fit better now.

I'm always glad when Matt (he gave me that precious hint how to "sharpen" textures in the B.A.T) or you share your great experience. Everything I do today I learned from guys like you. So don't be nice - be tough, brutally honest. But only once a week. I have very sensitive skin.

The real thing has ~39.000 workers. I tried to get a little close by dividing the whole "factory-city" now into 5 parts. And to give the different parts different work types from I-HT to I-D. So not to plopp all the jobs in the same sector.

Now, when I compare the highest value, the I-M lot with 8500 workers to some of the ploppable skyscrapers with 10.000, 15.000 jobs it is still good average.

But instead you are right.  :P So many ploppables offered for download have stats never to work with standard game values, insteads only with CAM. I think with CAM 2.1 demand can be (theoretically) at 50.000 (!) for each job type.

But with regular game more than 5000, 6000 jobs on one lot would always cause a drop down of demand for many years and make the game imbalanced.

With a total length of 64 tiles this monster will extend to exactly the dimension of a small city tile on his own. If you compare those numbers - 26.000 jobs on 64 x 23 tiles - that isn't very high density. For big industry the density should be even higher.

So to reduce the amount of jobs on lots that big isn't the solution but instead to make the lots smaller, so making more parts - instead of 5 -> 8 parts f.e.

So I would need your opinion about this: should I split up the whole thing into more parts to get the amount of jobs more balanced?

Title: Re: What should I lot?
Post by: Andreas on April 04, 2019, 04:58:06 AM
Such huge ploppables will trash the demand balance alright, so I'd say try to split up the lots a bit, make unusual lot sizes that you can zone with CTRL pressed, and if the demand for those is high enough, they might grow instantly. 7x11, 9x13 or so might work fine, and still gives you more than enough space even for large industrial facilities.

When I designed my colossal refinery it was more as a show piece rather than pushing insane amount of jobs. In the grand scheme of things, jobs are just an intrinsic factor that really does not matter here. The whole point was to create a super detailed ensemble to showcase what a refinery looks like.
I set the jobs at a minimum, if I recall the whole lot assembly provided no more than 500 to 650 jobs.

2 things are achieved this way.

1) The whole ensemble can be safely plopped without breaking the demand balance.

2) It looks awesome AND it won't break the game  :D

I split the whole assembly into 7 parts.
.

And when its all together you get this...
.

Small details..
.

I think the whole point is to be able to showcase your lot ensemble without disturbing the game therefore In my opinion your jobs requirements should be dropped by a factor of 10.
So 2600 total would not disturb the game that much.

Nick

PS I had just started to create my own props when I made this lot therefore you will not find my latest props here  :P

If I were to take on such a behemoth of a project, in addition to breaking it up into parts as you have done, rather than go for a strict recreation, I would look to replicate the 'feel' of each area. There is a language and a rhythm that exists within all built structures. If you decode that language, feel and rhythm, you can actually take huge liberties with the lot and still have it resemble the real thing.

The original dimensions of the follow map is exactly 400 x 1111 pixels and show the plant:

That must be some secret message alright... ;) Awesome work on the props, those really look fantastic! If I had to find a "hair in the soup", I'd say the dark blue frame of those BASF trailer tanks is a little oversaturated - the other colors are fine, though. As for recreating the BASF facilities in all details, I agree that this would be a mammoth task, so go ahead taking some liberties and shrink the whole thing to a more managable scale that is compatible with the SC4 scale. :)

Thank you. Yesterday I was a bit lachrymose.

But speaking of simplifying things ...

... the layout still causes me headache. Appriaciate your opinion on the northern part.

First this - i puzzled together a map from Google maps that will serve me during lotting. Please have a closer look how rail is running and therefore my first layout was wrong as rail hat to run through the water of the port in the north. So the northern east part must be without connection to leave it open for the next project (redoing the R.D.E).

Next my new layout with some changes: now with small functional police, fire and power plant lots and the north-west part turned into a giant freight station. Therefore overall lesser jobs.

And now about the rail:

I won't do the thing diagonal, as also the tank props and facilities and the gantry cranes etc. had to be diagonal - too many external dependencies would be of no use. So only way here is to make the cargo transfer terminal 90 degree.

Now my first attempt was to make a curve and eun the rail for a while and then end it on the lot.

A

But this eastern part of the rail running lengthwise with the river and then stops doesn't make much sense.

So I thought - to simpify thing, why realizing this track on the lot (as in RL) , when it makes much more sense to have the train running BESIDES the lot:

B

But then ... if this is the simplified solution also the layout with the two northern lots making a L-shape upside-down, espiecially the long narrow layout of the "Cargo Center East" suddenly isn't needed anymore in that shape.

So both solutions aren't 100% RL. But which one is the better one?

Or maybe something else how the rail layout should be realized?

Title: Re: What should I lot?

Apologies – I'm making a mess.

Changed again the layout. Now, again, it is - estimated - 64 tiles long. I can estimate certain thing - f.e. how much space I will need when I come up with 12 parallel rail tracks etc. - but then, when lotting, sometimes I change idea because I don't like the visual aspect of the result.

But this layout imho is far better than the first ones:

So the rail instead going nowhere or (wrongly) to the east now it will leave correctly to the south.

So I guess it will come close to the original layout:

This picture was taken from west to east - the same as my sketch. On the upper you can see how the rail get's close to the water/docs and turns quite sharp to the right.

Look in my Modular Itermodal lot. I made custom RRW textures for it and see what you could use.

.
Or you could also look at my Hump Yard texture set. I made those as overlays.

Dammit! I wasn't aware of those. The intermodal textures are indeed exactly what I need. They are excellent.  &bis&

Sadly it seems the gantry rail is part of the texture. They would fit much more situations if the gantry rail was a prop you could move to fit different gantry props.

Hm. Maybe I should do some BASF gantries for your set? It's too nice and too helpfull to skip. Ah ... pain.   :shocked2:

Funny you should say that.....I made gantry rail props too and you will find them in my mega prop pack vol2...I also made gantry rail bumper stops.

Look carefully at my props. You may find a lot more than you think ;)

Hm. Making it the way I proposed last - two lots one goes to the west, other goes to south - it won't be possible to do the thing transit enabled. To make one half a freight station and the other half I-D then - I guess - doesn't make much sense?  ()what() Looking today on it I get doubts again.  ()what()

Maybe proposal B wasn't that bad? Maybe to cut the cargo part into 3 slim long slices from east to west and making the middle slice transit enabled and working as a freight station?  ()what() Or the south slice  ()what()

Strangely I'm not able to find a solution on this simple task ...  ()what()

I would make some filler lots to deal with the gaps. A lot that is 1 tile wide by X (ie 11, 13 etc) tiles long. I would make it a static landmark with 'demand satisfied' requester for ID and IM of approx 5,000 which will help get your main lots growing. You can then use them to fill the gaps between the placement of the larger, functional lots and the rail or other stubs that need 1 tile between network enabled lots.
Title: Re: What should I lot?
Post by: fantozzi on April 17, 2019, 11:51:14 PM
That's a good idea, to make some demand pushing lots for the gaps. Il decided, instead of making more planning plans to better start lotting and see where it takes me. Even little lions have to play a lot to learn hunting and fighting strategies. For evolution the key to find solutions isn't thinking but playing.

They build so fast new structures on the former US-Army ground in Heidelberg - it feels really confusing when you aren't familiar with your own vicinity anymore.

Today I passed this building and I don't know when it was builded and what is in there. Completely new to me.

Tell me, is it really that ugly as it seems to me?  Or am I prejudiced against it because it's a stranger to me and the hometown I used to know?

I like the idea of the foldable window covers, is inventive. But the materials could have been more amicable, and certainly is something to place on a more 'virgin' space, when you don't need to worry about how it mixes with the context.

While B.A.T renders and renders and renders ... I browsed throught the web and found this roman church from late eleventh or early twelfth century (groundwork from eighth century):

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F2.bp.blogspot.com%2F-2zKkiQngsUs%2FUkKgofgD3hI%2FAAAAAAAAUbw%2FqrV1aW0SFio%2Fs1600%2FP1490136.JPG&hash=fcb5ba91b9fa10d8659e56c1095dccd441ae0654)

It's located in the southern alps, near the village Laas (Italy) and is consecrated to Saint Sisinius.

It is very typical for the clearness, scantiness of early roman churches. But mainly I got hooked for the texture - and how it would be a challenge to give it that look of walls that stood almost a thousand years of rough weather.

We haven't a basket arena jet ... or am I wrong?

A cool model for a tennis stadium:

Most probably those models are to huge for my old PC.  :'(

But concert stages, sport arenas - how to name it  ()what() Event Facilities  ()what() ... apart from soccer and football stadiums we haven't that much.

Reminds me I thought about to make a modular olympic park similar to the BASF. With tabel tennis arena, badminton arena, martial arts arena and all the sports fields and a nice swimming stadium. Making it some kind of reward chain - where you asked: "major, your city was proposed for hosting the olympic games. If you build a complete olympic park in the next 8 years you will get the games which will give you a big economic boost." Some mod like this I was dreaming about.

So many ideas ... so little talent.  &mmm

Next lots still very caotic. For orientation please compare with the map/plan provided earlier.

Now going slowly from south to north, the area is split up into western and eastern part. On the eastern side, next lot will provide the continuation of the acetylene production chain, with acrylic acid and acrylic resin leading finally to the carpaint (main east part 2). Also - on the left side of the main eastern part 1, there will be the menthol production. Did you know that a quarter of the menthol in toothpaste etc. is made synthetical from bromide and not destilled from herbs? I'm learning quite a lot doing those lots.  :D

On the western part we have the headquarter and the main entrance. The other administrative buildings are still in the works. So sorry, in total not much new to show. But work is going on.

Drat. Returning to my stuff started with a bad surprise. As discussed earlier I wanted to create timed families from the bus props. I realized now I missaligned some of the bus props in the opposit direction, so I have to rerender more than a third of them. In total there will be 20 different busses in ortho and 45-dia (40 bus props). I definitely can't release it for christmas. Have to find a small compensation present  :(

Hi!

Urban props perphaps? I mean you've made a bunch of fountain and other plaza related stuffs, plus the street food vans etc... :)

I want to see these buses to be released, but I'm a bit glad that you can not do it before christmas. I would feel the need to go through on my lots and start replacing the buses what I use from my Essentials (blanco_05 and Motokloss). So at least I can leave those lots alone and if I manage to put into shape the essentials then some lots are coming from me too....
But currently I'm getting deep into Polska Files organization...
Anyway! These projects of yours are truely awesome! Thanks for working on them!

I realigned all the bus props in BAT, as accurate as I could - so they should match when they are packed into families for the parking lots. But now I have to rerender them all and I have to reload all the textures manually as on loading textures BAT is as dement as my mother when she's walking with the shopping cart through the supermarket. She has a long shopping list but at the end the cart still is almost empty.

So there's nothing new to show but I'm working on it.

In direct sunlight it's almost invisible on the upper part (see picture) but works well under less bright visibility conditions. I wasn't able to reproduce it. And also I'm getting tired of how often they change colour scheme.Since SC4 was released: from green-white to green-silver, green-silver to blue-silver, blue-silver to blue-silver-white lines, from blue-silver-white lines to neon yellow lines-silver-blue.

Thanks for having an eye on poor major Fantozzi.

No, Tibi, I'm not well. I read things, that aren't there. Maybe I get mad.

Lately I read old fascist ideology in posts, as if they try to tell me: "don't buy from jews." There are those, wo serve our system and those, who don't serve our system - and those are community enemies. So you should never buy from those not serving the system. Explanations what are "members unworthy of membership" of this community." Such things.

But of course they aren't really there. It's only my imagination. And in my imagination you did even give a "thumbs up" to this kind of thoughts I was reading. So it's obvious. I need holidays! Or even something stronger. A bottle of schnapps?

Hm... this metaphore seems to be bit too strong.
If I look back in the past few months the only major and relevant conflict was, the conflict around WolfZe departure. If you are refering to that one, I'm kind of scratching my head, because the whole situation (from its begining, which was like 2-3 months before his departure till his actually departure) was totally different and nothing alike what's your metaphore is about. I don't really understand how you brought this together. Maybe you haven't read his initial announcement (now it's gone, since his profile was deleted upon his request and threats), or you are not aware of with most of the facts what led to his departure. Of course there are things which might only he knows about the whats and whys.

I edited out most part of my comment. I'll rather send it to you in a DM. If you were refering to that situation, then I think you are seeing it from the wrong way. If you were refering to a different matter, then I don't know which matter made you upset that much...

I'm not using pm, because I think it's a matter of public interest – and I really hope I can avoid to make it something personal.

If you have the feeling, Tyberius, I expose something to public that shouldn't belong here, just give me a note.

I'm biased, yes. But who's not? And ... isn't that the real fuss - a lot of aggrieved people?

And I'm worried about the rage, the hatred I can read in the messages and posts. How you change, how nice people change, and even moderators start campaining. On this, Tibi, your heart is clouded and you will attack me too if I'd wrote – in first place learn forgiveness.

It scares me when a community turns into a mob by a few words spoken and people aren't able to refuse those bad vibes arising, a mood, a temper but instead are carried away like by a big black wave coming over them.

This case doesn't matter at all. There will come a time all content will be lost. Nothing will remain. This is the fate of all our voluntary work, our contributions. What we do - we do it for today, You raise up children and then the children go away.

No matter what happened - it can't be no reason, no excuse you let it happen your heart fills with anger or hate.

And it's you I care for and whom I address my words to. Not WolfZe. If I write, it's because I worry about us, the way how we gather together here, on the community sites. WolfZe - he isn't in my mind that much. Like a chapter, an episode in community's life. And there are so many. If he isn't the past yet - so it's mainly troubled hearts we are talking about.

You know, a few days ago someone asked "where is Wolf's content" – and then came a big black wave in return. To you – isn't it a little bit suspicious? Do you really think we are acting on a factual level.

It's almost as if someone asked "Where's Elvis?"

Instead - try to smile at him like you would smile on a little toddler that breaks your expensive watch by accident.

Many children grow up and leave. Should the hearts of the fathers always fill with hate because their sons don't behave as expected?

What to teach here? Having more motherly feeling instead of showing fatherly authority? Hm. Or maybe fatherly love - even you as father to this community, being able to forgive a child that failed?

It's a dangerous game to support public hate. Collective hate. Like a bonfire to gather around.

Me - I can't be part of a community that builds up identity upon hate against others. It's simply impossible for me. I would get ill. And it's a question of how I feel inside not a question of logic.

I think I know which post you're referring to in your original statement. While I do agree it wasn't the best expressed thought there is from that person, It's actually on point. First you might want to read EA End User License Agreement here on the steam store page (https://store.steampowered.com//eula/24780_eula_1).  -- I'm an idiot you can have access to the EULA here as well (https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?PHPSESSID=d7fa1bc53603c96a70da6b62b000ec44&page=6).

Okay now that you've done that you can understand that people asking for donation on a Patreon are walking a fine line with this EULA regarding using SC4 content as a way to make money.

The thing is, without SC4D or Simtropolis, where do you think people will get their BATs? I seriously doubt we would get any new players simply because today people are lazier than they were 15 years ago. Specially now that almost all games have some sort of Steam Workshop that centralize, organize and downloads assets for your games.
Look at Japanese websites. There are a few that centralize Japanese creations but even then are really unknown to the western audience. Most author's blogs are now gone and some stuff lost forever. Would you have given money to support them when needed? Sure. But who's going to benefit from it, you or the community we all love?

Now I've got a question to ask you: What do you think about BATers who reuse other people work (albeit available for free on different 3D model websites), put limited effort into converting them [Think no nightlights, very unfriendly LODs, obvious tiling textures.....] and post them as their own on the exchanges? I won't lie, my car models come either from 3D Warehouse or ripped from Forza 3 and 4, I can't model cars at all. Still this will be disclosed in the read me of course.

Now that you've answered this first question, here's the twist: Let's say that same person now put their building behind a paywall. What do you think? Keep in mind those BAT aren't even theirs from the begining since they come from 3D model websites and no credit was ever given to the original creator.

Just some food for thought that, hopefully, will help steer people in the right direction on this recent debate.

I think you really missunderstand the community in this matter. There is no hatered, rather a big chunk of disinterest. I don't think it ever was in this matter. There were disappointed people over he closed the shop and announce that he is no longer interested in releasing contents on the exchanges for FREE, only on his Patreon account for a monthly cost, yepp. It was disappointing, not to mention those points what Art brought up. It wasn't hatred, it was mostly disinterest. People were not interested in paying 10-20 euros for his models (which let be honest 10-12 years ago would have been torn apart by the wider community due to their flaws).
What really kicked the ball off, that he made the ST admins remove all his contents and deleted his accounts, because he got upset over some revoked likes and reviews what he shouldn't have got at the first place at all.
You definitely imagine some stuffs there. Questioning a person's or people's intention is not hatred.
QuoteOn this, Tibi, your heart is clouded and you will attack me too if I'd wrote – in first place learn forgiveness.
My heart is not clouded. I already have his creations, he didn't screw me over by removing his stuffs, he screwed over all the future might be players who will see images of his creations in CJs, they will look for it, and then they will be told, that ah "you can not have those because the uploader of those made them deleted".
So he screwed over the whole current and future community, just because he got upset over some revoked "LIKE"s, and those are fasicts and haters who are raising voice against this act...
Really?
I don't know, Fantozzi, your methaphores are totally out of space here. He chose to leave and burned the bridges, he was even threatening with legal acts over these files, though the ST admins stated all the time, that it's not up to them. If he wants to come back, he is welcome to come back. So where is the hatred there?
Or now if you disappointed over something, that would be equal with hate??? One can not be disappointed anymore? I, as a person, or the wider community generaly should support someone's acts, which are actaully against the very basic foundation of the whole community? And when some part of the community questioning this, then the community becomes the "bad guy"?
And we are talking about a grown up man, who was acting like a offended little child. Now this is even more disappointing.

I don't know, but it feels like more and more, that you are more disappointed with his departure, than how much the community cares about it at all, yet you try to blame the community due his departure, while the community was still pretty happy with him even when he announced that he is no longer interested in releasing contents for the exchanges.
Of course now the community is less happy, because he removed all of his creations and now we need to answere all those calls, that where those can be found... Though the community will be moving along, and while it will be a returning topic time-to-time, most of the people will don't give a f... about it at all.

This was wrong. Now I see. I shouldn't have answered your question here.

You see no hate, no agitation. You see disappointment.

I'm the only one who see it. So I must be wrong. It seems I have a serious problem.

I'm sorry for that.

Not shure what to do now. Visiting a doctor? Looking for another community, where there are at least one or two people, I can find a common ground and not feeling this lonely? Ignore my bad feelings?

I'l have to think about it. Thank you, Tibi.

All my models are from the warehouse. Maybe I did put limited effort in them too? How can I know? Yes, on some it was quite easy to bring them into the game. And what does it mean? I didn't realize I became a swindler this way.

Should I ask to delete my uploads? I don't want to cause troubles to any site. But now you made me aware I did wrong all the years.

I swear, it was never my intend to cheat. I'm sorry. I'm even shocked how strict all this is.

Another point I have to consider how to go on. Thank you, Arthur.

May I ask a question too? If I, reading this, now would say: so we have to fight all other sites and destroy them – except for SC4D and Simtropolis to make our community strong! Let's boykott all other sites to strengthen our community!

What would be your argument to hold against it?

And from there I have another question. Sorry. Sites have different rules regarding uploads. SC4D has quite a list of them.  ::) Not everyone is as good in english language. It's not always easy to understand all rules. So you feel insecure and decide not to share. So not share at all?

Also, sometimes, I have the feeling, I should only share my best creations here. Especially - looking on your judgement above - if my creation isn't done with enough effort to please the community - should I share somewhere else or not at all? On the LEX there are comments and ratings there is some public pressure, you know. Not everyone likes that - to be on show.

But then - if I'm - just for example - a citizen from China with no access to the sites you did mention or maybe for many other possible reasons I can't access them - now should I not share at all or try to create my own site? What to do?

And then – if we consider bats or lots as a piece of art and creators being artists. Just for a second. Is it of interest to limit access to art to dedicated places? So art can't exist without those places. Like f.e. museums. Is it a good world where art idepends on certain authorities? So to speak: without museums no art?

What if this thought is abused - not by you or me, but somebody else - to ban all street art?

The people who download such files are not willful parts of any misreprentation on the part of the uploader.  If you feel the files have been sullied by the situation surrounding them, that's a very understandable approach to take.  But the cat's out of the bag, and it's not your fault.

I'll also note--there's nothing stopping anyone from re-using the models the proper way.

I also just wrote up a new editorial at SimTarkus on the subject of third-party model re-use (https://simtarkus.wordpress.com/2021/05/25/some-guidance-on-the-use-of-pre-cooked-models-in-the-simcity-4-community/), which at least attempts to address some of these points.  Aside from good cases of model re-use, I don't name any names.  It is my hope to draft up a policy to specifically deal with this sort of situation as well.

Now, that's bitter. But I have to stay true. No I didn't. I didn't give credits to the creators as I don't even know their names. In most cases some alias like "X25" or "BruceWillis" that could apply to a million of people out there. So I have no possibility to trace back whom those models belong to, downloaded many years ago. You know, those collada and kmz files downloaded from the 3D warehouse, they come without any readme or policy or copyright notice. So I have no written document of ownership. After several month on my HD how can I know whom to credit?

Well I can credit the site - but that isn't in your sense, I guess ... if I do nothing wrong to quote from SimTarkus site here:

"Think about it–if you're a BATer, and someone takes your model and, instead of referring to it as a dependency, sticks it in their upload and acts as if it's theirs, without giving you any credit whatsoever, you'd be upset, and quite understandably so. Such a course of action is effectively plagiarism, and is a moral and ethical breach that, not surprisingly, constitutes a gross violation of site and exchange rules, and in many cases, also likely breaches the usually fairly permissive, royalty-free licenses that these sites often offer."

If you put it that way - touché. Yes all this I did; plagiarism, gross violation and so on. What to do now? Hope, I didn't put SC4D into any troubles? I never wanted to do so. I really wasn't aware. I was thinking very different - as those bats aren't really model files but just a bunch of pictures and only usable inside this one game and therefore in no way reusable for further or other use (you can't use a SC4 bat somewhere else and can't load it into any 3D software) and therefore they aren't a subject to copyright as it's simply impossible to break a copyright with on a distributive dead end.

Well, and of course site owners can make site rules. Nothing I would ever argue about. I'll even try my  best to hold them in high esteem.

But what you write here, Alex,
QuoteThe people who download such files are not willful parts of any misreprentation on the part of the uploader.  If you feel the files have been sullied by the situation surrounding them, that's a very understandable approach to take.  But the cat's out of the bag, and it's not your fault.

Imo isn't in line with international law. Things once stolen remain stolen. And if you pay for stolen goods in good faith they're legal they don't turn into something legal just by faith.

If you download a movie from a copy of a copy of a copy from a first copy that was illegal it's not, the last copy did become legal. So if WolfZe stole models and I download his bats - those bats made from stolen models still are illegal stuff.

And obviously this merciless point of view is necessary as otherwise you had a comfortable way to turn illegal filesharing into legal practice by converting files into another format. My five cents. But I don't want to teach anybody.

Glady I'm no site owner and I haven't to care for all this legal stuff. But seeing this community tries to have highest standards and I really don't want to hurt their morals nor their ability to know right from wrong ...

... what should I do now?
Title: Re: Fantozzi's Lotting Adventures

Dear Fantozzi,

You are mixing things together... Nobody said that he or anybody stole the models. It's kind of impossible, becuase they were free to download and permited to be used otherwise. The fact that he claimed that those models were his own creations, not giving credit for the original source or at least the site where he got the models and later tried to introduce a monthly fee for the availablity of those models (in SC4model format) makes it really bad. He didn't steal anything per se, because those were free at the first place. How can you still something which is free?  ()what()

But again nobody said that he was stealing the models. It was said that he used models from those places and claimed that those were his owns, and then he tried to "sell" them on patreon for a monthly fee.

Please, just understand what others are writing and don't imagine things into their posts what are not even there. Most of these post of yours around this topic are full of missunderstanding, missinterpreation and word/thought-twisting and you are spiraling around things which were never there... Like this WZ stole the models... HE DID NOT DO THAT... Nobody said that...

Sorry for the missunderstanding. Tibi.

And I feel bad I disturb you. You sound angry. But maybe I missread it. And you are happy with me instead?

I'm getting confused and insecure, indeed, what's correct behavior and what's incorrect behavior. Maybe this is the reason I'm confusing everything. I'm sorry for that.

From different readings in different posts it really sounded to me as WolfZe was stealing. And if I understood well what Arthur wrote above. this made things even worse, he used models, he didn't create on his own. So I made the conclusion, he must haven stolen them. Because if he takes free model and there is nothing wrong in taking them - how would it worsen things then? Why would you point it out if it's common practice.

So okay I got this wrong. And I feel relief as I was really convinced now I did the same mistake.

So the bats I make from models I took elsewhere, I can say about them - I made those bats. Would this be correct? Or would I be wrong doing so?

Maybe ... it depends on the efford I put in it? So if rework them the final bat in the lot - the whole work, I can call this mine.

Or, whenever I use someone elses work - I have no merit on the final result?

Sorry - don't go mad at me, please - but you won't guess, what crossed my mind now. Crazy fantozzi's mind? I imagined a cook that can't claim a dish his own, because he didn't raise the chicken himself he used for creating the dish.

So there must be some line somewhere - when something becomes your own merit, your own little piece of art where you like to have some little credit too?

And could it be a little - just a little - offending, if instead people say: you did nothing at all, you just took other peoples chicken!

Well I can credit the site

In one of the examples of good re-use that I cited in the article, the model came from a stock library, and it was hard to really attribute it properly.  The author did what he could, and disclosed that the model was indeed from a stock library.  If the information of who made it is lost to time, crediting the site, or at least noting the use of a third-party model should be sufficient.  If you knew the names of original models, it'd probably be possible to find them, in any case.

The main thing here--you're being honest.  If everyone else in the community who used 3D Warehouse, TurboSquid, CGTrader, etc. models were honest as you were just now, we'd have a much more ethical SC4 community.

Generally speaking, if you're crediting something, you're not using it without permission (or are within acceptable fair use), and you're staying within the licensing of the site and/or the original modeler (3D Warehouse models permit reuse), it's unlikely to become a matter of international law.

Also, take the case of Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby".  Was anyone who merely bought the single or the album before the song was re-credited to add David Bowie and the four members of Queen to the list of songwriters on it (to account for the previously uncredited use of the sample of "Under Pressure") going to be held liable for that?  Highly unlikely.  I think that's probably an apt comparison here.

Hey, thanks Alex. That feels like a big relief what you wrote.

Maybe to think of the whole thing like some circle. I take a free creation out of the community pond and I give back a free creation to the community pond. So basically, the creator of the original model could start play Sim City and use my bat I used his model to create. And so the cycle of give and take can always be fullfilled. If you take something from the pond and say, well you have to pay to make me giving something back - the circle is broken.

And I guess that's why people get so mad. But one man can't break a princliple that strong. Because this principle is named "caring society".
Title: Re: Fantozzi's Lotting Adventures

But then ...

... if there was a site that blocks some content creators from sharing - so they like to share but aren't allowed to share because ... let's say moderators can't stand them for their opinion - would it be right to support these sites regardless? And to follow when they say: those creators I banned from here, don't support them wherever else they appear?

Would this be still in the interest to keep this cycle of give and take alive? Would this be beneficial for a caring society?

Of course I will never make you pay for my lousy, loveless creations. Before I do this I'll shoot a bullet through my brain. And before this I will get flogged by EA anyway.

But if I'm not allowed to put my content up on those mighty sites anymore, would it be okay if I do my own thing to share them? Or should I stop trying to be a part of this circle? Would I become some kind of 'lunatic fringe group' if society bans me and I still try to share my stuff - so if I f.e. decided to make my own webpage?

So - would anybody here still support me if I'm banned from these big sites because tragically I have a different opinion than moderators have?

I think you are really thinking too much into it..

I doubt anyone will get banned from sc4 community websites because they have a different opinion from a staff member. You'd really have to break one of the site rules to get banned. And even then you would receive a warning first.
If it happened then I was not aware of it. Because that's not how I personally deal with these things.

If that happens to someone, well you're free to form your own opinion on the matter. If you should support or not the website, you're free to decide that on your own.

Nobody is saying small websites aren't allowed to exist. Of course they're! The point I wanted to make was that having things centralized on a big popular website is more convenient for the wider audience.

After 12 years of love and fun my PC broke down. I lost the work of the last four month which isn't that much to be true. I should be able to restore most of my SC4 content except of very few things I'll be able to recreate.

So nothing serious, But I have to save some money first. I'm little short of it lately.

Also, lately I have so many strange and mixed feelings, mostly sadness and loneliness. Suddenly falls into complete silliness. Does it happen to you too - you're sourrounded  by nice people, listening to a joke, and suddenly feel lonely?

What the heck.

I'll be back. I will survive. My PC will work again and there will be new content.

SC4 forever!  &hlp

While I'm slowly recovering my pc I decided to switch from Windows 7 to Windows 10 quite at the day they released windows 11. I'm such a retro guy  :D

So this is much extra work to figure out which of my older software will still run and to discover the new versions got so expensive (monthly cost!) and often they offer a lot of new frippery and still the old bugs/limitations.

But during my researches about necessary and unnecessary new software I stumbled on a huge collection of brushes for GIMP I'd like to share here. On first look some of them may enhance texture work. F. e. if you want to add some extra rust or grunge.

It's on devint art so to download those brushes you may have to register there.
