So, I just started BAT-ing and these are the first real results I have had. It has taken me a little while to figure out all the controls but I am starting to make some progress.
I am trying to put together some 17th and 18th Century New England style houses to begin with, but would eventually like to expand to some C and I as well. I really appreciate any feedback and constructive advice you can give me.
Here are three houses, all 8meters wide, i.e. half a tile. They are all R$ and are all based on real historical buildings. There are three different color versions of each.

Thanks in advance for your comments and feedback!!
Wow... :o....kant01,
For someone that has just started, I think you are off to an awesome start.
All three models look fantastic, the colour variations and textures are very good as well. I can't really see anything that I would suggest you change.
Keep up the great work.
BTW, welcome to SC4D, you have come to the right place for advice. ;)
Robin
Welcome to SC4D kant01
What a way to make an entrance too :D :D
Those are some excellent BATs, with a good variety of colours and shapes.
I can't find any faults $%Grinno$%
:satisfied:
TTC
what a great start, what a great project! &apls
I relly like that sweet tiny houses!
First of all, welcome to the SC4D community
Those are very good BATs you have there, they look very realistic, congrats!
You have really captured the essence of Colonial buildings, My favorite of the ones you've shown is the "Johnston"... I'm sure that with a good lot, these houses will be a hit on the LEX ;)
very nice &apls
my intrest is sparked for sure here wow!!! BTW welcome to SC4D there kant01!!!!
Wow, I really appreciate the feedback and all the kind words.
rooker1 - You are too kind. Thanks for the greeting and the feedback. Much appreciated!
TheTeaCat - Thanks for the welcome and the kind words. There are definitely faults, but I'm glad you like them.
peterycristi - thanks! I also like small houses.
alan_vsla - I appreciate the welcome. I am glad you like the BATs. :)
Yoder - Thanks!
Pat - Thanks for the greetings and the interest!
I have currently game testing those. I have a few things that need to be worked out, but I hope they will be done soon.
In the meantime, I have been working on a BAT of the Paul Revere House in Boston. Here is a picture of the house from the back:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2Frevere-house.jpg&hash=3a9480b218804abd81d11527130dd9ef8b578ef6)
I have made a somewhat imperfect version.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2FRevereHouse.jpg&hash=2dd6ff7182467ab11042aa8c824d1029bda60963)
And I made another version with a wall around the lot (1x1). I cannot decide which is better to use:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2FRevereHouse_wall.jpg&hash=cd15ee7586eabffbc010570e2e9bd180440eb97e)
And I have 4 different color versions besides the actual brown color:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2FRevereHouse_wall-colors.jpg&hash=a36463972a3cd2678854a73967f749c1fdab9aac)
I am currently trying to game test the BAT but having problems with it. It definitely can fit on a 1x1 square, but for some reason it will not grow at all. I even reduced the growth stage to 1 so that it would have no problems but it still won't grow. All of my other BATS do just fine. I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that it comes from one edge to the other on all 4 sides. But I checked it in gmax and it definitely does not exede 16m on any side. Any thoughts? I currently have it at 15 residents.
Thanks in advance for the feedback!
Are you sure you are new to BATting? You are already millions of times better than me. Great work!
-un1
Cannot wait to have these. They will add to my suburbs. &apls
These look great! The textures are perfect, and we're lacking of more buildings of this type. I think they'd fit very well with C.P.'s XIX century pack.
try a bigger size lot that might work... Otherwise looking real great!!!
I'm really looking forward to these. We don't have enough houses and these are definite gems. Everything is looking good. I have just one small comment about the Eleazer, the window blinds or sash (the white bit) is a tad bright. I would darken it up. I know that's really nitpicking but it does grab the eye and it's the only thing I can see that is worth changing.
If you're having trouble getting the building to grow check the lot config prop zone type in the lot file. If you have your growth stage set to one but the lot config is set to medium residential or, worse, not set for any zone, then your building's won't grow. I have had the lot config go screwy on me before. That's the only thing I can think of.
I really appreciate the feedback everyone.
un1 - I assure you I am, but thanks! I am having trouble still with getting the textures to look the way I want them to. It is very frustrating.
SimNation - Glad you like them!
DebussyMan - I am glad you like the textures. I had a really hard time getting them to look right. And I am definitely hoping that they will fit in with C.P.'s lots. They are an inspiration to me. :D
Pat - I finally got the lot to grow. I had to adjust the occupant size in iLive reader to like 15.9x15.9, but it finally worked. Thanks for the feedback!
spa - I really appreciate the suggestion! I will definitely make that darker. I agree that does stand out too much. Thanks also for the tip about the lot config. I will be sure to keep an eye on that.
Ok, so here is another model I have made, the Blair House, which is a colonial residence that is actually from Colonial Williamsburg and so technically not New England, but I think it fits anyway.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2FBlairHouse_A.jpg&hash=8e211b097f265ce15521b1daffe7834d43dc7742)

Thanks for your suggestiosn and comments!
The textures look fine the way they are, but you are the creator. Looking great!
-un1
I am droolin over here for these lots &hlp
awesome news I am excited to hear that they are now growing for you Kant01!!! The newest stuff is looking sweet!!! If you need any testers sing me up.....
Wonderful houses Kant. They are detailed very well and their textures are great as well.
btw, do they have nightlights?
Thanks for the feedback! I truly appreciate it.
un1 - well glad you like the textures. I appreciate it! ()stsfd()
SimNation - So happy you like them!
Pat - thank you! I'll keep you posted on when they might be ready :)
tag_one - I really appreciate the feedback. Unfortunately, I have not done any night lights on these. But I plan to very soon.
Ok, so I have a bunch more houses and I am working on, but in the meantime I wanted to throw in another colonial style building. This time it is an old town hall. Again, this one is not actually New England. It is from New Castle, Delaware, but I thought it was lovely.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2FNewCastleTownHall.jpg&hash=41cbb413353a6c391f0e21e7c6adb16ecc8ddfa4)
I wanted something else to go with these buildings so I could get a sense of scale and the overall look and feel, i.e. how they all go together.
I quickly lotted this one and the Blair House just to get feel for the progress and what else I need to adjust before they are ready:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2FNewCastle_1.jpg&hash=327c7bec4531e883bf6a0dbaf56e6147bb22596d)
These were just some quick lots I threw together - so please don't judge them too harshly! And I still need to fix the trim on the Blair House. What I am interested in here is just how they look together, scale, details, etc. What else needs to be done?
Thanks for the feedback!
Just a word of encouragement here. We have needed American historic buildings for some time. I am down here in Virginia (Eastern Shore to be exact) and we have colonial buildings all over the place. Your work looks great, please continue this series, I look forward to seeing it released. And, if you want or need photos from Williamsburg or other Virginia locations, please PM me, I would be honored to dig them out and send them to you.
Kant even for a quickie its still darn good!! lol They honestly look good in my opinion!!!
Thanks for the comments!
shoreman905 - I appreciate that! I will be sure to let you know. :D
Pat - Thanks so much for the comment!
So I have done some updates. I think the textures are finally getting close to the point where they look natural in the game. First is an update of the Clemence House, which is actually based off of the Clemence Irons House from Rhode Island. It was built in 1691. Wikipedia Link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clemence-Irons_House)
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2FClemenceIrsonsHouse-Revised.jpg&hash=88e7d6419b0af4b01a56a582dc858a99da51e1a5)
The next is a revision of my very first BAT which I don't think I posted here. It is the Parson Capen House, built in 1683. Wikipedia Link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parson_Capen_House)

Finally, I have just started the basic framework for the Great Friends Meeting House in Newport, Rhode Island. It was built in 1699. Wikipedia Link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Friends_Meeting_House)

I don't have any pictures of the back so I am just guessing. Hopefully I can start texturing soon and adding on the details.
Thanks as always for the feedback!
These are looking great, Kant01. Keep up the great work and I can't wait to see your BATs in my cities.
Cheers,
Kevin
Yeah, very good work! &apls
Thanks for the feedback!
Here are some more developed shots. I have a few more things to tweak on this as well as the night lighting.

Happy New Years!
Wow! These look really good and I love 'em! ;D
Let me know if you need a lotter / modder for these beauties! I'd be glad to assist! ()stsfd()
Looking forward to more, and keep up the great work!
M
Nice looking stuff! We can always use more small houses.
I would darken that last roof a bit, it looks a little washed out... ;)
Hey Kant I love the new house there... I cant wait to see the lot to go with it...
Thanks everyone for the feedback!
M4346 - Thanks for the comment and the offer! I really appreciate it ;)
SimGoober - Wow, thank you!! :D Your BATs have been must haves of mine for many years so I am really pleased you like these. I am definitely planning on darkening that roof and I am going to get rid of the big bright spot in the middle as well.
Pat - Thanks so much! ;)
Ok, so here is a quick update on my stone-ender collection. These are all 17th and early 18th century houses from Rhode Island.
The Clemence Irons House:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2FClemenceIrsonsHouse-Revised-1.jpg&hash=cea88655b195616fdd42bdedd5a195cbe083af46)
The Eleazer Arnold House:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2FEleazerArnoldHouse-Revised2.jpg&hash=b9472a7e8459dd4cce2d1763423ce3168c3214e4)
The John Tripp House:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2FJohnTrippHouse.jpg&hash=e2599ca20986ce643c296bda1b79f0c03f623577)
And the Thomas Fenner House:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2FThomasFennerHouse.jpg&hash=5c315a4b0761d3d7df8a6fd18be1eb2900cd6920)
Also, I did a revision of the John Blair House that fixed the textures a bit and also made it wider and scaled it up a tad:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2FJohnBlairHouse.jpg&hash=11e0cd2418e8b9d790d2a4782675ddec297132a5)
And the Blair House has a detached kitchen building that sits at the back of the lot. I made this as a prop. This is not part of the stone-enders set but I thought I would share:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2FBlairKitchen.jpg&hash=d2b2798a289800b4416ac62d736f464b0c71af89)
So that it was what I have so far. I have lotted these and thrown them in the game to check for scale and how they fit in with the other buildings in general. Here is what I've got:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2FTest-Shot-A.jpg&hash=ed1b4459faad4cc01f23fc4bc0a989bdad8e5d79)

Ok, sorry for the big update and all the pictures. I would really appreciate any suggestions you might have!
You're doing some great work, kant01. I'm pretty new to BATting myself, but I'm nowhere near being up to your speed! Hope you won't mind if I tag along and watch - I really like your style!
Later...
Joan
Don't know how I've missed this up until now, but I'm glad I found it. You are doing some amazing work, and this will be an excellent set when it is done. Even as it is, it looks like it makes a fine set now. Your name sounds familiar. Do you go by the same name at other sites? Very fine work.
Jmouse - Thanks, I appreciate it :D
threestooges - yes, I go by the same name at ST and have for many years, although I have only been active off and on at different times. Thanks so much for the comment; I'm glad you like them :D
My newest addition is an old grist mill built in 1760 in Pennsylvania. I realize that is not really New England, but these old mills can be found all up and down the Eastern sea board and the midwest so I felt like I was justified in including it. :)
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2FHainesMillpic.jpg&hash=be20b6f4be6705d3ef7484b85632fa601cfcb6eb)
Here is my version of the mill - please accept the differences between it and the original:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2FHaines-textured.jpg&hash=1b88c11f7525847760676f1a85456761a5d129eb)
I have the sign from the building as it currently stands, but it is not really clear when rendered:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2FHainesMillSign.jpg&hash=d64418309197d3286dd967817f492e09b8463f25)
And here is the lot I threw together to test it out:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2FHaines-test-A-1.jpg&hash=c2d2fe443de076742d87eda95de68c4d6a923075)
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2FHaines-test-B.jpg&hash=3813490bac7585671f6e21e1bd6f2eb09c476fe7)
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2FHaines-test-C.jpg&hash=dcbfa674d1f87754c51dc8475a438bda05be6606)
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2FHaines-test-D.jpg&hash=f9db9047f2414a5da815695da000f48b0da61e8e)
You can see that the ditch piece hangs over on one end of the lot. That is because the ditch props are 16m wide, but the building itself is slightly wider than 16m so there is no way for me to avoid this problem short of making a custom piece using the original ditch model. Of course, I wouldn't mind doing that if SimGoober was willing :D I would like to make a piece without the wall that fit.
In any case, when you add more ditch pieces in game the overhang gets covered up:

Comments? Suggestions? I really appreciate the feedback :D Thanks!
It's awesome!!! &apls
Once again, well done. I thought your name sounded familiar. Welcome to SC4D. While the sign is clearly on that side of the actual building, it seems strange it would sit back so far from the road without having any identification on the front. However, considering grist mills were somewhat major structures back then it would be pretty obvious what it was, and likely who owned it, without much need for advertising. Looks good, and I'd love to see a night pic too.
OMG WOW!!! That is all I got to say here Kant wow!!!
Hello Kant01
These are nice looking bats. And the lots that you made for the above homes are super. The flour mill is a very creative idea. Perhaps it can be made into a reward lot after XXXX number of wheat farms grow?
Wow, these are really fantastic. Both the batting and the lotting on all of these are extremely well done. The overhanging ditch on the mill doesn't look like it will be a problem. It still fits together nicely with ditch lot next to it. Offhand, I can't think of any reason why someone wouldn't be continuing the ditch beyond that point.
Your BATs are absolutely wonderful!! Good job.
Wow, sorry for not posting before... seems like I've missed some good works! That mill is awesome, looks very professional :) . I have only one suggestion, and I hope you don't mind if I write it; in my opinion some of the lots you showcased on the last update were a little saturated for my taste, I suggest you to leave a little bit of more open space.
Anyway... great job and looking forward to more!
Alan
Looking good! I'll have to check to see if I can find the old model files for those ditches... I am pretty sure I don't though... &mmm
Hi, kant01,
Wow, welcome here, and welcome back to ST. Now I see what you've been up to. ;) BTW, I loved Mystic County, it was a beautiful historical city journal. I constantly use your Rural Development Kit, too. Your BATs are just gorgeous, you must have been at it for some time. It's all about the texturing. The residentials go so well with c.p.'s Victorian sets, which really haven't had something as complimentary yet. The low wealth sets are just to die for. It is becoming possible to design a quite respectable low wealth area, which is certainly needed. The town hall is spot on. Have you ever thought of trying a barn or two?
Keep going!
--Liv
Wow, I really appreciate all the comments!
io_bg - thanks :)
threestooges - I could add a sign to the front/side. Again, part of what makes it weird here is that what looks like the front of the building does not face the road in RL, but rather the lawn. At least, that is what I gather from all the pictures. I will see what I can do. :) Thanks for the feedback!
Pat - :D I appreciate it!
jmyers2043 - hey! thanks for stopping by and commenting! I love your farms - couldn't live without them. They are part of my inspiration for my rural cities and development. I like the idea of having the building as a reward. I was thinking of building a small commercial bakery and perhaps once you have a bakery or two along with some wheat farms that you could then get the mill. But I was also thinking of making a growable version as well. hmm...I will have to think about this. thanks so much for the feedback!
c.p. - welcome! your trees and textures and fences and small houses are another HUGE part of my inspiration here so I am thrilled that you like my BATs so far. thanks for the comment!
girlfromverona - thanks!
alan_vzla - yeah, I think I know what you mean. When I threw those lots together I hadn't quite envisioned how crowed they would look once they all grew up together. I will definitely have to work on that a bit. I appreciate the suggestion and thanks for commenting!
SimGoober - oh that's too bad. I downloaded your gmax file for the brick canals. I was thinking of using the water texture to try to make a rural canal set that could hook up with your urban ones and with the mill. I don't know of any other rural canal set. Is there? thanks for commenting!
Livin in Sim - Hey, Liv, I really appreciate the feedback. I am glad to here that you were a fan of Mystic County and those lots :D It has been ages since I have place SC4. Too much else going on in my life. I only just came back to it at the beginning of December and decided that I should have a go at BATting. I tried it once, I think about 4 years ago at least, but didn't really know what I was doing and didn't have the patience then, so I am just really learning all this now. I only just figured out how to do night lights yesterday - so now I have to go back and add them on to each of these. As for making some barns, I definitely have that in the works. The most recent industrial project is an old colonial kiln and pottery barn. Here is the kiln with a wood shed:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2FKiln.jpg&hash=54e17b34fc9dce2840731449d3fd132e3bb1adc3)
I just started this so it needs a lot more work. Once I have it a bit better I will add a pottery barn to it. Thanks for the comment! I really appreciate it.
Ok, so I think I have nearly finished the Great Friends Meeting House. After much labor I was able to do some night lights. The spots really gave me a headache. I also darkened the roof just a bit, narrowed the windows, and removed that bright white spot.

Here are some shots of it in game:

I think it is nearly finished. There are some weird things going on with the shadows there, but I cannot tell if it is a serious problem or not.
I was also thinking of making this a reward lot, perhaps connected to some smaller meeting houses or perhaps my R$ lots. Any thoughts there?
Thanks again for the feedback everyone! :D
kant01,
These are all amazing lots that are very well done. I might be getting to the party a little late but to me it seems like the horses and carriages are scaled too big. They look to be bigger than the 18 wheelers driving on the roads. I do not know what your take on this is or how hard this would be to correct if you agree but like I said, this is a very minor thing on some AMAZING lots &apls
Hey Kant I think that would be sweet to have a reward for the "Great Friends Meeting House"... Now about numbers I would think sufficiently having 10 Colonial lots growing would be good??? Thats my thought there, otherwise everything is looking sweet!!!!
Why don't you make the "Great Friend Meeting House" a club-house, with gardens, trails... maybe a pond... That's just my opinion. Anyway, the kiln and the shed are looking good so far, and one question... what are the white details on the roof? snow?
projectadam - thanks for commenting! As for the horse and carriage, that is just a prop from a set, not something I made myself. It probably is a bit too big, but I kinda like them. The prop has "RT" on the front of the name so I think it must have been created by riptide. In anycase, they could easily be removed.
pat - thats a good idea. thanks!
alan_vzla - thanks for the suggestions! I am not quite sure, though, what you mean by a clubhouse. The spots on the roof are just discolored tiles from patch jobs or discoloration. I reduced it quite a bit already, but if people still find it annoying I can even it out a bit more.
I have started working on the Old North Church in Boston. The height of the steeple, the width, and the depth are all measured to scale. At this point I am just wondering if it looks too squashed? I know many of the buildings need to get stretched up a bit to have them look right in the came because of the rendering. Any thoughts?

I have just started to texture it as well, but here is the beginning of a first pass:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2FOldNorth3.jpg&hash=7a2cc0f0ad3b0aa83fc4d190c1572fb13b087a5b)
Thanks for your feedback!
moin kant01,
looks great, especially your mill and the church, like the idea of having older buildings in the game.
keep up the good work.
b_schlurf
You are doing amazing work here, kant01! I can't believe you're new to this. I tried BATting once, but was totally useless at it... &mmm

Make it a club, for example, like the house that's on the Golf club reward on SC4. As for the white texture on the roof, it doesn't annoys me.. I was only curious, don't worry it looks good as it is!
Now the church is loking good, very "small town" looking... Now, please don't get mad at me for posting another suggestion (it's just as I am) but, I think that it would look better if you made the church itself (not the tower, the other part) a little longer... but thats only me, if nobody agrees i'll just shut up ;)
Great work for a so-called BAT "newbie" ;D
Alan
I love small-town churches, so I'm anxious to see how this one turns out. That's a nice brick texture you started out with - I like the color. Hope the texture of the walls won't disappear in the render. That's a problem I'm still working to overcome!
Later...
Joan
Thanks everyone for the comments!
beutelschlurf - I appreciate the the comment :) I am definitely a fan of having the older buildings too. Hopefully I can add a few.
girlfromverona - thanks! In trying this out I discovered that it takes a lot of patience - that and I read every blinking tutorial I could find before I started and then just went very, very slowly on my first few BATS. It definitely gets easier :D
alan_vzla - ahh, I gotcha. I definitely want to rework the lot some. I want to keep it with a historic landmark kind of look. but of course, once it is finished I would be open to folks doing whatever with it. :) As for the church, I would agree with you on this, but the reason I made it that length was because that is the way the real Old North Church in Boston actually is. But I do appreciate the suggestion ;)
Jmouse - glad you like the church and thanks for the comment :)
Ok, now for a quick update. Here is an actually picture of the church:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2FOldNorth-Photo.jpg&hash=ef007c65490595e54920609b400a1e4f8e33b279)
I think in my last shots the tower looked a bit squashed. So on some advice I did a 33% vertical scale and I think that really took care of the squashing:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2FOldNorth5.jpg&hash=3dbd1fe070b60b087facde3c675f76bdb1eba919)

My main problem is getting the texture on the cone portion above the apse to look right (at least, I think that is called an apse). I have never texture a cone before, and it is not working to well. Any suggestions on how to do that?
Now I just need to get on with the night lights...1 if by land, 2 if by sea :D
Thanks again!
Splendid. &apls
I love your work in the bat and the details, Kant01
Fantastic work Kent! All the buildings you've created so far look wonderful
I see your also using night lights now :) I do have a small suggestion to make them look nicer at night. ATM you're using night windows for the windows. Instead of night windows you can also bat real floors in your models with different textures. When placing an omni inside the building it will look much more realistic at night. Especially with bigger windows you'll see a lot of difference ;)
You're doing some amazing work here Kant01 - all of the buildings look magnificent. And the Grist Mill is a very original idea for SC4. I'll enjoy following this thread and waiting for their release.
I just saw these, they are amazing! Excellent work.
One note, I know that a lot of these buildings are also featured in more urban areas, could there also be a set of urban versions? I'm not one to usually request, but they would not only look really good, but would work as excellent school biuildings and museums as civic type lots.

Not a bad idea, rushman5! ;D
Your new BAT looks great. I specially love the rear of the Church. The texture is also very nice.
Apart from Marc's comment I'd also suggest revising the steeple, it is supposed to be an octagon, but it your pics it looks like it has less sides (I might be wrong, but that's the impression it is giving me)
About your question. There are two ways I use to map polygonal roofs. If I need to tweak the texture of each side individually, I detach one of them, use a planar mapping and array it again so each piece will have it's own mapping gizmo aligned. If I just want to throw a random texture on it (i.e. bricks) I use the cylindrical mapping.
one if by land...two if by sea...isn't the templar treasure under the stairs? :D
the church is looking good, love the textures.
Thanks everyone! I appreciate all the feedback :)
Earth quake - welcome to the thread and thanks for commenting :)
tag_one - I appreciate the suggestion - I am giving omni's a try now but having mixed luck with them and several people have told me not to use them. I'll see what I can do though because I prefer the more realistic looking light as well. Thanks!
paroch - thanks for stopping by - I'm glad you like the buildings :)
rushman5 - hey thanks for the comment. Yes, I want these to look appropriate for more contemporary cities as well. My first task is just to get them done and lotted for the 1600s and 1700s, and then perhaps do some work on them for later periods.
marcszar - thanks for the comment! I really appreciate it :) And that is a great suggestion. I will definitely add some!
girlfromverona - noted :) I also have plans in the works to build a school soon...
DebussyMan - Hey thanks for the comment!!! Yes, I noticed that about the appearance of the steeple, but it is an octagon already in the BAT. Wish the details were a bit more apparent. Thanks for the tip on texturing. I will see what I can do :)
Yoder7652 - no treasure yet :) thanks for the comment!
So as I work on updating and completing the church, here are some small commercial buildings I have been working on. I could use some advice on how to make them fit in a bit better and what could be changed in terms of color, texture, scale, etc.

I am not really happy with how the carts turned out. I probably need to make the wheels a bit thicker. Any other suggestions?

Thanks for the comments!
ahhhh , a New England Themed Bat project  , just one of the Great realistic bats, turning this Old boring game into a flexible anything , & everything game!
I like the big choice in food option ;D
The new buildings and props look good... And the church even better... Great work!
OMG Kant simply stunning wow!!! I love the new props and the buildings!!!
I haven't replied here yet, but I've been lurking for the past few days. I really like this project a lot! The buildings look great and the lots fit them perfectly.
I think the new commercials fit together quite well. Given the scale you mentioned, I wonder how they might match up with other BATs though. A door and two windows seems like a lot to fit in 5.3 meters... but it's hard to say without comparing a little. ;) The only thought I might offer would be to switch the Apothecary and Bakery around... just to randomize the back a little bit instead of having it follow a single line.
I love the idea of the carts! The wheels do tend to blend in a bit... but I think it's getting lost against the cart itself. Maybe a lighter shade of the same texture would be enough to make them stand out a little better.
This is a very cool project and I'll be following along (whether I remember to say anything or not)... &apls
JB
Thanks for the comments :)
Nexis - hey thanks for commenting and glad you like the project :)
Orange_o_ - thanks :)
alan_vzla - thanks for the comment I am glad you like them!
Pat - Thanks for stopping by and for the comment :)
JBSimio - Thanks for the comment and welcome :) I really appreciate it! As for the scale, these are definitely small buildings, but I had based them off of some very small commercial buildings at Colonial Williamgsburg. For example, this one was one of my models:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2FWilliamsburg-tailor.jpg&hash=7cc575092a4fd0b347eb81a35ae54bbd0d782765)
As for the doors and windows, I followed the scale on those for all the other buildings I have been doing so I *think* its ok, but I could be wrong. Also, I wanted these buildings to be able to stand alone on a lot, as it does in the picture above, or else to be able to be grouped together in a wall-to-wall fashion.
That's a good suggestion about switching the buildings around. I have a bunch more of these I am working on, so I was hoping to make them into a building group so they would automatically be randomized. And I think lightening up the wheel carts is a terrific idea. I will try that out and see what I get :) Thanks!
Ok, so I am trying to complete the Rhode Island stone-ender set. Here are four more to add to it. All of them are 17th century:
The Roger Mowry House:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2FStone-Ender05_RogerMowry.jpg&hash=c25a9dab10eaec7e225447dc7b50918dc492e197)
The Valentine Whitman House:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2FStone-Ender06_ValentineWhitman.jpg&hash=0e9b97b216822d9b58ffda464c2b45d29f473c4a)
The Edward Searle House:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2FStone-Ender07_EdwardSearle.jpg&hash=35ab464ff29ef66a8ed1064d0cc989e5d017b5b4)
And the Clement Weaver House:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2FStone-Ender08_ClementWeaver.jpg&hash=18470b1b9674730a428a28478fe5dc3832b0fa34)
And finally, here is what I am trying to do with the carts. This is a big 4x4 diagonal lot which would go in the game along a diagonal road. I made a market building to go at the center of the lot. Its roughly based off of an 18th century market building. And then I scattered the differt 4-wheeled and 2-wheeled carts about. There are also a couple of meat tables on there. As for the people, those models are from GTA and were given to me by glenni at ST.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2FMarket-test07.jpg&hash=29457e7fc1c3ba147c37d1290318c2e96e8e0126)
Thanks everyone for your comments!
Hi Kant,
After a little comparrison and thought, I'll definitely buy into your line of thought concerning the scale. ;) The latest batch of buildings look great! You're developing a lot of subtle variety here that really keeps things interesting. The market lot looks wonderful! It looks very lively with plenty of visual interest... but it seems like something is missing. I have no idea what to suggest, because I really don't know. It's just a gut reaction which could easily be wrong and therefore ignored... :D
JB
Just good work, and I think you're very patient to do this, because it's fantastic of realism! &apls &apls
Thanks guys :)
JBSimio - Thanks for the comment again! I agree with you about the market. I have not entirely satisfied with it but I am at a loss as well. I may need some more people in there and I think I will try doing something with the base texture to make it more interesting and varied. Will keep you posted :)
sciurus54 - thanks so much! :)
Ok, I am also working on a R$$ house, although the size is a bit off compared to some of the other R$$ in the game. I suppose I could make it R$$$ if people thought it would fit better.
It is the House of 7 Gables in Salem, Mass, built in 1668. This one is part of my Salem set It spent a lot of time on the roof and the different side pieces - what with all the gables and all - and I am happy with how the basic model turned out. But I am not so happy with the textures as usual. I would love some suggestions on what I should to do get this closer to being done.
Here is the building in RL:

I could really use some help with this one. It doesn't really look right. I am not sure if it is the textures or what but I would love some suggestions!! :)
thanks!
Hello Kant01. My First time posting here, but I must say this project is delightful - the details in your work are just superb and all of the models are really delicate!
As to your problem with 7 gables, I believe that the issue is the fact that the whole model is largely brown, so the details become blurred: I have made models with very difficult roof planes (the Bathurst St Police Station/High Holbourn Train Station) and sometimes it can be very disheartening seeing the results of such hard work fade in-game on your first render.
To fix it you could try any number or all of the following (I'll try and list in order of how I might do it):
1) The roof in your pictures appears more grey-blue, perhaps adjusting your texture colour from brown will help, and/or;
2) Add a ridge cap in a darker brown/grey blue. If a ridge cap already exists darken the colour of the texture used to pick out the contrast - you can see the gables all merging together on your two left most renders - this should address that, and/or;
3) Add a more distinct gradient to the roof texture - this will also assist the eye in working out the different roof planes quickly (just make sure your UV maps align correctly...); and
3) Pick out your Barge boards/Gable ends (not sure what these are called in the US) in a similarly light texture as say the one you used on the window surrounds.
Hope this is of some use....but as I said, this whole series is thoroughly charming &apls
hey matt,
welcome and thanks for the very helpful suggestions!
I have lightened up the wall textures and I completely revamped the roof, making it gray and also more uniform in texture. I then added some barge boards and roof edges to the entire thing which I think helps the gables stand out more in the shadows:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2F7Gables04.jpg&hash=320edf7dbc6c8c63b9b28cc1a0b9e36ba0973394)
But now I have noticed much to my horror - :'( - that the rendered version looks terrible in the game. For some reason the edges are very jagged and the quality of the render looks much poorer in the game than it did in the preview with gmax. Not sure why it is rendering in a poorer quality.

And I have a further problem. I am trying to make some custom fence props but my fence looks really terrible when I rendered it with some weird black edges all around it:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi77.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fj42%2Fkant01%2Ffence-problem.jpg&hash=b1e0520a11eb9e5c9e7b0700850af6452f1c2270) :angrymore:
Not sure what's the cause of this. Perhaps just because the fence is too thin?
In any case, I appreciate any suggestions. thanks!
Sorry I can't make any suggestions (not being a BATter myself) but I just wanted to say that the diagonal lot looks amazing! I can't wait to get some of your buildings into my game.
The fence pic? Probably because the vertical fence slats are too close. You'll also find with time, that very thin stuff looks wider in game than your gmax preview. I used to place lightning rods at the top of my barn buildings. What happened? The part of the rod that was within the roof showed up fine and thin but the portion that contrasted with the ground and appeared above the roof line was fatter. With regards to the finest of stuff? There seems to be this 'minimum' amount of fine-ness that the game/gmax will make. I keep my lightning rods short now.
You'll obviously have fewer slats but the affect - not realism per se - is what you're trying to accomplish.
Ahhh - the joys of GMAX. $%Grinno$%
The jagged edges on the side cannot be helped - they were probably there with the darker version (Gmax and the game only have a limited number of pixels to display the models); however it was less contrasting to the ground texture so it was less visible. A slightly browner texture on those pieces can assist visually...
With the jagged line on the top of the roof in the first render, again - darkening the texture may help, or model a small ridge cap, or you could increase the whole building size by about 5% - as jmyers2043 said, Gmax can have difficulty displaying the 'fine' stuff - the point on the roof seems to be one of these cases.
With the fences - as well as the previous comment on removing every other board, there is a great little tutorial on using alpha maps: http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=1127.0 (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=1127.0).
Very nice work kant. The houses have been turning out quite nicely. I like the market but, as has been mentioned already, there is something missing. Perhaps a more varied base texture, or some greenery (small bits of grass, or even a tree or two). As for the produce carts, very nicely done. I would suggest that you either thicken the wheels of the 2-wheel version, or color them for more contrast. They seem to get lost with the rest of the model. Very nice work, and a great selection of it too.

It is with pleasure that I see you have attracted the attention of some of the old hands of SC4. I have visions of an entire region devoted to an early American theme, though the material we now have is scant, it would be worth waiting for. There have been other developers who put together mods that changed the look and feel of the game, perhaps you have hit upon an untapped (but welcomed) arena. I can only speak for myself, I await the release of your outstanding work so that I can greedily manipulate my own visions. Congratulations on a new vision.
I know that a lot of time has passed since the last registration and perhaps the author has not given here, but I wanted to say that the buildings are fantastic. They look sensational and are great for rural areas. And I question whether they are available somewhere? Here or on the STEX or some other site. They are simply amazing.
