Title: Metasmurf's showcase
Post by: metasmurf on December 14, 2006, 10:08:41 PM
Here's the thread where I will share my work, only at sc4devotion . I'm trying to go for some sort of realism, well eventually we'll see where it goes lol.

I haven't named my cities or anything, but this is the first update of city #1 in my small region :)

A few suburban pictures.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg326.imageshack.us%2Fimg326%2F7679%2F2hi0.jpg&hash=27136e797989e4b6f229a236e106e28e9e12346b)

I love marrast trainstations, very basic and realistic.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg351.imageshack.us%2Fimg351%2F779%2F4kc5.jpg&hash=99bc09ac1194a0bcb1d172df3c79d9a95faba4c0)

Interchange to the "highway" wich really is an in game avenue, but the ingame highways doesn't look to good imo.

On the other side of the rail lines, there's a lowrise low-wealth area

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg341.imageshack.us%2Fimg341%2F2525%2F6er3.jpg&hash=811c15c91d7315793a58fd997579db4a2c8153cd)

I'm somewhat obsessed getting traffic on both directions, it looks much more realistic.

Simgoober shopping center

And some industrial...

Semi-overview

Congratulations! That looks really, really good! I love the railbridge, and the cycleways are used in an excellent manor.

If I were you I would have blocked out the Maxis hightech industry (that blue building looks like a car engine condensor) but that's the only thing want out. The rest is amazing!

Hi metasmurf,

Great start  . I can see you have a very good vision about how real city looks like, and you can put it in the game quite easily. The layout in all the pictures is excellent indeed  ;) . Of course there are some random details that could be improved, but that is just a matter of working a little more with the area. Nothing important.

This is a good way to follow when you build your cities. As a tip, I have been playing about two weeks to complete the small farming area you can see in Gran Canyon, and every minute spent there was really worth it. Time does not matter when you are building in SC4  ::)

just checked this exclusive content out now, and I must say that it is very impressive. It's clear to me that if you and I were to have a SC4 buildoff competition, you would absolutely kill me!!

I like the railway in the one image travelling over the roadway. You have spent some quality time building this city up!

As promised, i fixed the industrial area, so here's the new version.

I also did a small city center, with an old town style approach inspired by things seen IRL.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg225.imageshack.us%2Fimg225%2F7523%2F7ii8.jpg&hash=aa3a1141b66b37a52e11f6c81c93d61005abeac4)

The city center is surrounded by pretty dense housing wich still has a suburban feel to it.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg220.imageshack.us%2Fimg220%2F1979%2F4xs4.jpg&hash=f1a23ecfd8da350460ea80f2a574d59d272ad849)

Anyway, the last pic shows the excellent city layout, very realistic  ;)

Wow, Metasmurf! I love this!
The railways are especially good because you curve them creaqtively and you use the mod by NOB. I love the feel of the city too.
Very good application of custom content aswell, I enjoyed seeing all the different styled homes and shops etc.
I also luurrvvee the avenue highway but I have one suggestion: To make it even more realistic, download the no one way road arrows mod from Simtrop and create highways using one ways to make a sort of median strip in the middle. You could chop and change from avenue to one way roads to create a very cool effect!

Good job! &hlp

There really is no way to truly appriciate just how realistic your pics are if you haven't been to a Scandinavian country. I could watch those pics all day and go "yeah, that's where I walk my dog", "that's where I drive to shop for groceries", "that's where I live", etc. The abundance of three story apartment buildings, the way you blend 2-3 family housing with single family villas...

This looks EXACTLY like a typical Swedish suburb! It's amazing!

You're a very good suburb builder - I like how similar styles are used in pockets of development and how the transit networks take twists and turns - it keeps it all intersting!

Very nice, but IMO your railroads aren't realistic. Usually railroads go straight, because curves are hard to handle in great speed and curved railroad costs more money.

This is looking very nice, I spot a lot of buildings that I don't know, which is making this quite exciting. The layout the city is good and the only critique would be (like Bengt also said) your railroads curving like they do, but this is your creation and you have of course complete freedom to do like you want.

Hi, Metasmurf-

I arrived and really started posting in the forums after your last major update, but I've now had the chance to look over your whole MD closely and must say that I really enjoyed myself.  There's a lot of promise of great things to come.

I'll be looking forward to your regaining your computer, and to being a frequent visitor to the showcase in the future.

This looks very nice, great use of diagonal roads and streets (you are using the mod from Jeronij?)

I am also curious about the sidewalks and parked cars next to your road in the commercial district, how have you done that?

From the look of the trees, I think it's the SFBT Street Tree Mod, but he installed some other textures - now the trees grow right out of the concrete. ;) The cars next to the diagonal streets are lots, I think, which use a triangular grass overlay texture. I'll have to extend my mod for the diagonal streets someday...

Anyway, looking great indeed, and the rural feeling transports very well. :)

Great pictures, quite a unique style you have there.
One thing I gotta mention: The Railway-crossing in the very first update (I know, old, stuff). It would look more realistic, if the Road changes the altitude, above or below the railway, not vice versa. In most cases, the railways are older and so the roads had to adapt to them.

Aye, here's a few images  ::)

I made an old town section. It's for pedestrians only but it is functional, i used the ped mal thingys from nam combined with a custom made parking lot to make it work.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg292.imageshack.us%2Fimg292%2F8200%2F39661232bv4.jpg&hash=3c888d67327cab486a2bfbd13ebaca3bc1fcabd3)

I think xannepans buildings fits in really well with kwk's recently released set, hence i made some custom lots with xannepan props.

Title: Re: Metasmurf's showcase
Post by: metasmurf on September 09, 2007, 04:19:02 PM
I'll post the update anyway. I'm kinda going back to a more maxis-oriented style, since it's more fun to play that way, imo :P As a way to improve my English skills, I will try to write some kind of fictional "story" of each place covered.

This is the village of Glencoe. Population around 1000. Glencoe lies closely to the town of Oakville, which will be covered in later updates.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg205.imageshack.us%2Fimg205%2F673%2Fglencoeur9.jpg&hash=c80a7e32b2f17836ef0f475560241ecd6bba6450)

The village is situated nicely surrounded by hills and farmfields.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg511.imageshack.us%2Fimg511%2F6675%2Fglencoe2cw1.jpg&hash=c457e45a500751311f7e9d0ab2ca4e4cbea1c69c)

Adjacent to Glencoe runs a throughroute, mainly used by trucks.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg213.imageshack.us%2Fimg213%2F3156%2Fglencoe3gv5.jpg&hash=fdfd32adc6b00c2e33a10a63c0aeefe79791b799)

The "heart" of the village with an elementary school, police and a small fire
station. Here's also a bus
stop which connects Glencoe with Oakville. Since the establishment of the bus line some middle-class workers has moved to Glencoe from Oakville to experience the peacefulness of rural living, as well as enjoying a house worth its price.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg451.imageshack.us%2Fimg451%2F9387%2Fglencoe4ps0.jpg&hash=8066a9e9a245fba452549da135addf181b8a078d)

In Glencoe we can also view this small romanesque church, which style's very rare around this area.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg529.imageshack.us%2Fimg529%2F2396%2Fglencoe5fz6.jpg&hash=06c45c618d2909bfa53c191aa1eec0b16941688f)

The village arranges an annual farming festival. The festivities are very much appreciated by the inhabitants as well as visitors from around the area.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg169.imageshack.us%2Fimg169%2F4558%2Fglencoe6gc4.jpg&hash=ee78d85ac18bd5f400844f301394d8fdc34c0b28)

Finally, an overview.

That's it for today. Enjoy  ::)
