Challenge 2: Let there be light (or damn, this is thirsty work)

Yet another road is to be built and connected to the outside world.

Given that the road engineer has now worked on one project, Federal Laws deem that he is covered by unfair dismissal protections and I cannot terminate him or his spaghetti designing ways.... ::)

So I compromise with him and tell him that we shall not cross any more rivers this time and that I still need decent service for the planned industrial areas to the South.

He draws a plan to connect from Tile E in the centre of the map through Tile H and traversing the Lakes Region on the southern corner of the map. From there the road wends its way up to Tile D prior to connecting with the rest of the Nation.

Simply called The Lakes Way, this road will allow both industrial movement and connection to the centre and edges of the map; cutting through the lakes area will provide some scenic areas for future urban sub-divisions:

If there is going to be industrial expansion, there needs to be a decent power source.

Luckily, Tile H, with its marshy, boggy ancient flood plains in between so many major rivers, provides a perfect source of clean, green, cheap and abundant power.... gas , and lots of it. &dd

CSX Industries was the perfect choice to provide a solution; although to ensure Voltage could be moderated through the future grid, a bank of transformers was added to the design. Land was gazetted near the edge of Tiles H and Tiles G to allow easy connections and to avoid all but one-in-one hundred year floods.

As you can see, the land is enclosed by various barbed wire security fences - even the street can be completely closed off.

The workers homes are closer to the meandering river bank; the situation being far more pleasant to build upon here - furthermore, residential development is to be kept away from the main road (The Lakes Way) which will carry mostly heavy trucks and should eventually itself become a major employment corridor.

This power plant with its clean technology and engineering jobs has seen the first luxury homes in the region being built.

Of course, there needs to be water for the new region. While this might look easy with so many rivers, many of them are in fact tidal and salty: The only exceptions being the areas to the north and west of the region which are fresh water.

To ensure that the Federal Government is not given cause to make noise  $%Grinno$% about the costs, a desalination plant was immediately ruled out as it is polluting, expensive to install and drains electricity at a massive rate. Pumping from the lakes area on Tile G was also considered given that it would be so cheap and easy, but ill-advised due to possible failure in drought years for a large population.

Therefore, the only long term reliable water source left was the small spring on the eastern side of Tile B. This tiny spring at the base of the mountain range has been shown to be permanent, and, in addition to its permanence, benefits from the snow-melt each summer.

An Italian firm was selected to build the Water Works on the promise that it will later be given some land in the region to operate a distillery to bottle the spring water for sale.

The government has funded the pump-house construction on the shores of cool, dark spring at the base of the Northern mountain range.

The government has also funded the length of pipes (approx 4ks) from the spring to the water collection and storage areas.

The Water Works office itslef is in the Italianate style, and reminiscent of the ancient Italian forum. This grandiose complex of three buildings will be the regional headquarters for the Italian firm; the centre offices will house some government workers.

And so, Aqua del Podesta, the first Public/Private enterprise was born.

Your challenge 2 is well done according to the rules and the demands. You can now play on 2 more citytiles anywhere in your region. This will be a part of challenge 3. Make sure that you have at least 100 citizens in all three tiles you played in (no population max limit).

Judgement of Challenge 2

A.  Although your choice was not the best one, but still a good one to give access to the more restreint southeast of the region with the new route, we gave you 4 points for this challenge.
B.  Excellent story and good use of lots used for the powerplant. Well chosen location. We gave you 4 points for the power challenge.
C. Again an excellent sory and description of the water challenge and wonderful and original idea, which we were impressed with. Nice use of lots with great piping. We decided to give you 5 points for this challenge.

A Total of 13 Points were added to your challenge.

Congratulations, very well done. We liked the introduction and the story plus the original idea for the water plant. Good luck with the next challenge.

Btw, nice planting of trees!

Thanks for the comments - the Italian-owned water plant and your evil sepratists of Challenge 3 could give me some ideas....
