Title: [WIP] SCAG McDonnell Douglas MD-80 Project
Post by: pilotdaryl on May 25, 2008, 12:43:39 PM
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg168.imageshack.us%2Fimg168%2F6893%2Fprojectmd80logohz0.jpg&hash=df2d716fce61a794fee3386da12a37a5537e4a89)
MD-80 Current Status: TEXTURE CONSTRUCTION & APPLICATION
I began my aircraft-BATting business over a year ago with the Boeing 777 (picture (http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/9721/mackinacgc7.jpg)).  That aircraft has been with me for a long time and will remain the flagship of the SimCity Aviation Group.  Now it's time to make decisions: should the Boeing 777 remain the only aircraft available from the SimCity Aviation Group?  Or should we introduce another aircraft series?
That dilemma has plagued me for many months.  I have finally made my decision.
These are the currently available aircraft (BATs) for SimCity sorted by market:

Long-range market
Airbus A380 - tabinohito
Boeing 747 - AC team
Boeing 777-300/ER - SCAG (Under construction)
Medium-long range market
Airbus A340 - tabinohito
McDonnell Douglas MD-11, DC-10 - tabinohito
Medium-range market
Boeing 767-300/ER - Kumba
Boeing 757-200/300 - tabinohito
Short-medium range market
Boeing 737NG - AC team (under construction)
Airbus A320 - AC team (under construction)
Airbus A320 - tabinohito
Short-range market
None
Regional market
Bombardier CRJ - AC team

See that "None" in the short-range market?  Most of the aircraft being made in the SimCity aircraft industry are bigger and more modern aircraft.  That is why I decided to begin BATting the McDonnell Douglas MD-80.  The MD-80 is a short-range aircraft series perfect for the short-range market.  There are many MD-80s in service around the world today.  The MD-80 will be constructed alongside the Boeing 777 in the SCAG aircraft factory; it will be a much shorter project with a much shorter timeline than the 777; skills from previous aircraft BATting experiences will be applied to this new project, and I expect it to go by much quicker than the multi-year 777.  The projected timeline is as follows:
Model completion - Late Summer-Early Fall
Nightlighting/extra details - Early Fall-Mid Fall
Texturing completion (RL airlines) - Late Fall-Mid Winter
Release (RL airlines) - Winter

The available models will be the MD-81, the MD-82, the MD-83 and the MD-87.  Not only will real-life operators of the MD-80 be made, but the SimCity Aviation Group is open to requests for either real-life airlines or custom liveries.

Our mission: to create realistic airports and their environments for the enjoyment of SimCity players worldwide.
-Pilotdaryl

STATUS:
Stage 1 MD-80 (basic structures: fuselage, wing, tail, engines, landing gear) - COMPLETE!!!
Stage 2 MD-80 (details such as navigation antennas, lights) - COMPLETE
Texturing - ONGOING

Fuselage BATting has begun:

Do we get a classic SAS livery (from the time it was The businessman's airline?) ::)

And wouldn't the A340 belong in the long range category? The shortest-range version flies longer than all current 747s except the 800ER  :D

krbe: Hmm... I didn't check the references... I just... well... placed it there randomly? :D
SAS does operate MD-80s; all RL MD-80 operators will be made ;)
Update on the fuselage: Nose has taken shape
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg168.imageshack.us%2Fimg168%2F6469%2Fmd80fuselageshapeeastiu9.jpg&hash=5835d1f502f7008fed806e6332a6a8088e5fe43c)

Note the diagram reference on the bottom and side; this is a method that I didn't use on the 777; it pays to be accurate ;D
Also note the transparency of the fuselage... so I can see the diagrams behind it. :D

"In front, to the left please" -- I cannot understand why people berate these planes so much these days. Only two seats on the left, low engine noise and the wing far back ;D Give me a MD-80 any day!

Good to see we're getting somewhere!

Yay! More planes!  :D
Hopefully this won't slow down your 777 project (BTW, hows that going anyway?)
The MD80 looks great so far! Can I please request an Air New Zealand livery? (I know they don't operate them in RL, but I would like a small aircraft to supplement the ANZ 777)

Great work Daryl. If you want someone to lot these for you when you're done, give me a shout. I'm not gonna be fully available for another week or so, but that shouldn't be a problem, seeing as you still have texture it.

krbe: Thanks! ;D
cameron1991: More planes! ;D It's nice to see the SimCity community so happy about the variety of planes available nowadays.  I have a few lower-quality models (such as the 737 and A320) which I can place ANZ liveries on, but if you'd like it on the MD-80, no problem ;D
freedo50: I'll be lotting these myself, but I guess I might as well give you a call if I need help. ;)

Modelling the tail starts today; I hope to have the engines started tomorrow then I can move onto the landing gear.
Shortest time to complete modelling an airplane :P Maybe, lol

EDIT: Vertical stabilizer finished

cameron1991: Awesome!!! $%Grinno$%
krbe: The MD-80 will not be rendered with a jetway, but due to advantage of custom LODs you may connect a jetway to the MD-80 without the 'jetway bug.'  You may also connect airstairs.  A 45 degree version with 45 degree airstairs is also planned... ;D
simsmart: Thanks!  Yes, that would be awesome.  But it would be a pain to create all those new textures from scratch... oh well, I like challenges :D
Welcome to page 2 everyone!  Not much news since I was a bit busy yesterday, but so far I've been able to finish engine supports and front landing gear:

I second awesome. In fact, I just did an awesome dance in that awesome plane's favour. I've also started to plan a couple of small, awesome airports in my large, awesome region (modeled on the awesome Øresund region (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=55.72711,12.735901&spn=0.765606,2.579041&z=9))   $%Grinno$%

Great work on the MD80.  I know how hard it is to do this - even with a blueprint to work from - from my attempt to make concorde.

For anyone who wonders where to get some blueprints to work from, I find this site (http://www.the-blueprints.com/index.php?blueprints//) to be one of the most useful for all sorts of vehicles.

simsmart: Thanks... I'll see if I'll be able to do this project solo, but if I need help, I'll be sure to ask!
zero7: Nice site!  I used diagrams from the Boeing site; they have diagrams of all their plane models, with dimensions.
jmyers2043: Thanks!

Oh yeah, I forgot to announce it here.  I'm very sorry but my computer has been infected with a virus that causes problems during system startup.  I'm fixing this right away so that both 777 and MD-80 projects can continue as usual.  It wouldn't be fair to lose this much work.

B777s only have 2 wing engines, so this is probaley a DC-10 or MD-11. I think it has winglets so it's likely a MD-10 or MD-11.

I hope this isn't a silly question, but has anyone figured out how to get multiple airplane designs into the game? My understanding is that, similar to other automata like cabs and trains, you can only have one design in the game at a time. Is that (still) true?

hey nofunk well you can do it as a prop most of the stuff in the Aviation Group/or wahtever other airport geek squad they create the models as props and just like that it's eye candy but great looking eye candy at that hope that helps. so yeah it's still true Automata is still limited to one design I personally stoped using the Automata for Airports when I went to the custom ones.

I hope this isn't a silly question, but has anyone figured out how to get multiple airplane designs into the game? My understanding is that, similar to other automata like cabs and trains, you can only have one design in the game at a time. Is that (still) true?
Unfortunately You can only use one design per automata, but in the case of Airports that means that You can at least in theory have at least four different designs at the same time replacing the Maxis Turboprop, ARJ, B707 and B767.
Personally I use Pilotdarryl´s retextured ARJ, Fukuda´s SAS MD90 (replacing the B707) and the Dutch Navy version of KLM´s B767 replacing the Maxis B767.
On top of that You can then add as many propversion aircraft as Your computer can handle...
If You want some inspiration You are welcome to have a look at my thread (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=3016.0) on available aircraft for SC4. ;D

"and not to mention this trijet concept I've put together from the 777"

hmm... the original plans for Boeing in the 1970s were that:

757 - replaces 727, single-aisle two-engined aircraft
767 - challenged A300, double-aisle two-engined aircraft
777 - concept plane, challenged DC-10 and L-1011TS, tri-engined aircraft

(from wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B777#Background)

so to see a tri-engined plane derived from the 777 is very... coincidental... =P

Both the 777 and the MD-80 will be props and not automata; these props will contain custom LODs so they can be placed beside a jetway or on a taxiway or runway unlike ACE aircraft, while avoiding the plane-above-jetway bug.
nofunk: fukuda was working on a mod in '07 that would allow multiple automata aircraft, however, I haven't heard anything of it recently.  It might've been cancelled.
swesim: Will you include an 'upcoming aircraft' section (so as to have my 777 and MD-80 up on that list ;D)
allan_kuan: Well... I thought I had completely made it up, I never realized that there really was a 777 trijet concept!  Thanks for the info!

It is not a bug, planes are intentionally rendered with the jetways to provide maximum detail and perfection.

PD and owen - you're both right, bit of clarification needed...

PD's sentence parses somewhat awkward, the gist is that he wants to fit the aircraft LOD very close to its skin. So that (unlike ACAircraft jetliners to date) the airbridge could be separate (with its own close-fitted LOD). Then the two LODs would meet without render-precedence errors. It's a valid design, I actually used it on our initial 742 models. But ultimately I chose to render the aircraft & jetways together, because it produces visually superior nightlighting and natural shadows. Which are difficult or impossible to recreate in separately-rendered scenes.

I'm sure nobody will have a problem if I take a different approach. :)  Although I must agree that rendering the aircraft with a jetway attached adds more precision and detail, it also provides some drawbacks, including lack of customization which many people are already complaining about.  I'm one that usually pays close attention to detail, however chose this approach to improve customizability.  Other aircraft producers like Kumba and tabinohito have released aircraft as unlotted props, and while my aircraft will be released like yours (attached to jetways) my method should allow for people to get creative in the LOT editor and allow them place the aircraft anywhere, anytime.  I'm sure you all understand.
--
Now I have to get realistic.  Fixing my computer is taking more time than I expected.  I wish I could minimize the delay but in this circumstance, you don't always get what you wish for.  I'd like to apologize for these big delays and ask all of you to be just a bit more patient.  Both projects will be back up and running soon! :)

Sorry to hear about Your computer problems, I hope You get them sorted.

Your idea about an upcoming section in my aircraft list is not bad, but I find it somewhat useless as it seems difficult to set a prognosis for completion.
If there is one thing I´ve learned about airport related stuff it´s that it is complicated and not at all easy to predict.
I will of course add Your creations the moment I find them online though, rest assured of that!

As for Your ambitions to fill some of the gap in the shortrange market I wonder if those ambitions might include ARJs as well?

I've been back on track for only 5 days, and I have to go into hiatus, yet again...
This one will be much shorter, though.
This is NOT another computer virus.  It's my computer itself.
I recently noticed my computer was slowing down on me.  Then I began getting notices about 'checking my hard drive.'  Just a few minutes ago, while I was minding my own business, my screen turned black and I noticed my computer was restarting.  After the restart, my computer loaded a temporary profile and warned me that my hard drive could be failing.  This may mean getting a new computer or a hard drive.  All files have been backed up, including recent MD-80 progress as shown on SC4D (as shown above).  I have yet to decide what to do and when... hopefully soon.

Title: MD-80 - UPDATE! New completed wing texture - Oct. 17
Post by: pilotdaryl on October 17, 2008, 06:17:24 PM
This week has been a very busy one for me.  Let's take a look at our overall progress:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg339.imageshack.us%2Fimg339%2F4210%2Fmd80wingtex3view1tu0.jpg&hash=2ca11250d09fc562ae48bcd0823046f0521a01f8)
Apparently, the wing texture has more realism in it than I anticipated. ;D  Instead of just plain lines, etc. on the wings that represent flaps, etc. I decided to take it to the next level after looking at some real-life pictures and added some darker and more metallic sections that really spice up the texture.  You might notice these sections reflect more sky than the rest of the wing.  This is why the wing appears somewhat bluish.  By adding a sky reflections to the wings in GIMP, I noticed a certain level of realism there that doesn't involve modeling everything down to the last bolt.

It's like I took the texture from a real-life picture :D and no, I didn't.

Fatsuhono: Thanks!  I might be able to help you with that ;)
RustyXL: So are yours! :P
simsmart: Far, far, far, far far?  This is the ugliest thing I've ever seen :D just joking.  It is one of the most beautiful :)
art128: Thanks, Arthur!
tabi: Hey, thanks!  Good luck with your projects!

It seems to have just stopped. I hope that there is a chance that the MD-80 can be started back up again.

So many good Airlines flew the MD-80, and having the T-Tails is a wonderful sight for any airport.

Here's hoping!

I've been working vigorously on the 777 lately and may have excluded from the MD-80 from my schedules... this project will have to remain on hold for awhile due to many reasons mostly including the 777 but also due to production of other (and even simiilar) aircraft lines such as the 727 and Joel's turboprops.  I'll likely get back to working this after the 777 prop packs are released but for now I really have nothing to say.  Thanks for posting here though and giving me a reminder that I should continue the MD-80 soon.

No worries.

Just looking forward to much more variety than the standard 720 Automata from Maxis.

Combining the aircraft that the AC Team is putting together and your team, will give SC4 Airports so much more variety!

When you and your team get the time...I know we will all be excited for the MD-80 pack as well.

Take Care!

Thank you i_love_lamp. Unfortunately due to a mix of real life issues, and a focus on the B777 project, Pilotdaryl hasn't been able to make any progress on this model, as far as I'm aware.

When he has some more progress, he'll show it. I'm sure he hasn't forgotten or cancelled the project without telling us.

This thread is going to be locked until Pilotdaryl sees fit to reactivate it.

Pilotdaryl has sent me the files of the project, as he has withdrawn from custom content creation.  :(

So the team will be working to finish the MD-80 and MD-90 project and we will release a set of no more than 20 of them, at some stage. Followingly, we will finish the last derivatives, the MD-95/B717. We may also go back and make the original, the DC-9 at some point.

I've completed one livery so far: American Airlines.

Ah, I see your point! you will first upgrade the model (Rollce Royce Engines and a bit longer) then downgrade the model (make it shorter (717) and mount the JT8D's (DC-9).

Great work on the Livery so far, but I personally do think that the cockpit windows could need some work. I think that the window frame need to be less visible, more grey and half so thick. The windows on the cockpit sides are a bit to pointy. the frame is okay at this part, but the window itself isn't :P. The next "error" I wanna mention is the upper "eyebrow" window: It doesn't have any visible frame (well, It wouldn't have from the sc4 viewpoint) and is a square, not a triangle ;) Here's a picture to make visible what I mean. I marked the points in the same colour as in the text above :)

I'm sure you already have a list, but these liveries should be included:

-American
-Delta
-Alaska
-Midwest
-Allegiant (very important, because there are no Allegiant liveries on any sc4 aircraft)
-Meridiana (doesn't exist yet)
-Alitalia (currently no Alitalia jets for sc4)
-Aeromexico
-SAS
-Spanair (once again, doesn't exist)
-Aerolíneas Argentinas
-Iberia (would be nice, but certainly not necessary).

Your project looks absolutely stunning so far, and i can't wait for it to come out! By the way, this thread came up quite a while ago, so where are you guys at now? Also, what software do you use to make the aircraft, as well as the textures/lighting?

Thanks, and keep up the great work!

I've been assigned Allegiant, Iberia, and Qantas so you will see those completed over the next week or two based on my schedule.

You don't have to do them Alex! Make whichever liveries you like, honestly!

But I have made a few more, Alaska Airlines, AeroMexico, China Southern and EVA Air, so I'll get a few more pictures up in the coming days :D

Anyway, back to the topic  ::) $%Grinno$%

Here are some more liveries:

I was feeling rather Mexican today, when I made these. (As well as the AeroMexico E-190 over here (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=13557.msg396029#msg396029))

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdl.dropbox.com%2Fu%2F17186207%2FMD-80%2520Pics%2FMX%2520M95.png&hash=414138776ff26ef59a1bf7989363a1caa26d103f) (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/17186207/MD-80%20Pics/MX%20M95.png)   (https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdl.dropbox.com%2Fu%2F17186207%2FMD-80%2520Pics%2FAM%2520M80.png&hash=a3818536355c7b59547f99e9d816fcf0161b403c) (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/17186207/MD-80%20Pics/AM%20M80.png)

And one Chinese livery too:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdl.dropbox.com%2Fu%2F17186207%2FMD-80%2520Pics%2FCZ%2520M90.png&hash=ee4ea867334cf5cbf32232ef0916df882930a888) (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/17186207/MD-80%20Pics/CZ%20M90.png)

This also showcases the new variants, and lighting which are all ready to roll!

Enjoy!

Wonderful! I love the MD-90 and MD-95 / 717-200! Too sad that MD went bankrupt at that time so only a few MD-95 / 717-200 were build. I love the overal look of this aircraft... the short fuselage with those big RR engines and the modern glass cockpit ;D

Btw. you could also build the last version of the DC-9 Family... The chinese COMAC ARJ21 :D you could use the engines of a CRJ, winglets of the 737 and the rest from the 717... :-\

Well, you could thank Joel for the new windows. ;) As for the plane itself, the whole livery was on the wrong variant, from an old pre-render. But now it is the correct variant and, I like it. :)

Also, I might paint a Southwest version of the MD-95 depending on whether AirTran's MD's are kept by Southwest.

Edit:
According to Wikipedia, Southwest Airlines plans to absorb the 717-200 aircraft into its fleet of 737s. This would make Southwest not exclusively 737s anymore. They also plan to repaint the AirTran livery into the Southwest livery, starting in 2012. In shorter words, a Southwest 717-200 will be done.

Title: Re: [WIP] SCAG McDonnell Douglas MD-80 Project

Well...

Douglas built the DC-9
then they merged with McDonnell.

So McDonnell-Douglas built the MD-80
...and the MD-90

Then they were in the process of building the MD-95,
...But they merged with Boeing, so it was called the 717-200 instead.

...and 717 was Boeings internal production number for the KC135 Stratotanker

German Wings operated also two 717s for a short period of time. These two were leased from AeBal as you can also see on this photo:

Title: Re: [WIP] SCAG McDonnell Douglas MD-80 Project

To follow up on Joel's post, there were also a few improved variants of the MD-80. The MD-83, MD-82, and MD-81, to name a couple, which makes it the more confusing.

Also the plane lengths are dumb, the MD-95 is the shortest variant (but the newest), the MD-80 is the second longest (the oldest), and the MD-90 is the longest (and second oldest). It really is weird what McDonnell-Douglas did, following the time frame of development in naming the plane variant instead of the length, like everyone else did.

Alex

Also, on the advice of Joel, the project is getting to be a bit long, so that will be the end of requests for now. When things have settled down (as there are quite a few projects to be done here) then we might revisit this release and do a follow-up of requested liveries. Like the AC Team has done.

Hehe, I already started work on the regular one once the Star Alliance one was finished. The reason I'm not ready to show it yet is because the colour of the top part of the fuselage is fairly hard to get right. all the rest of the livery is pretty much done :)

I don't think there was ever a plane called "MD-80", the MD-80 family includes the MD-81, MD-82, MD-87 and MD-88 from memory (with all being the same size, except the MD-87 which is a shortened version).

Thanks for the comments all the same!

And let me add, there are a lot of things going on in all of our lives. Joel is managing multiple projects along with school, life, work, etc. Alex (Shadeslayer) is as well, and so are Xander and I. There are many projects going on in the SCAG. Sine I have finished my work in the McDonnell-Douglas Series (unless Joel says otherwise), I will be moving on to the long overdue 727 series and the Double-height terminals. there is much to do and once everything here is done, the 727s, the MD-80 Series, the Turboprops, the Airbus Line, the Double Height Terminals, the E-Jets, etc. Then we will most likely begin to do what AC has done, either take requests that weren't taken in the beginning of the projects, or move on with more projects.

The fact of the matter is, we all have jobs to do in our lives and in a couple years, all of us will have little or no time for the SCAG and SC4 Community, everybody retires eventually.

Well the honest truth is that I probably won't have much time for this next year. I'll be starting my life basically, in February. I'm moving out of my parents house to start university in Wellington (the Capital). I'm studying for a double degree, a Bachelor of Arts alongside a law degree. This will be very demanding, and I will  be living in the university's Halls of Residence (dorms, as I think they are known in other countries). My academic and social life will undoubtedly be much different to what it is now. But don't fear - I will make sure I get everything released before then, and hopefully I will be able to leave the team with some materials and skills to carry on our work. We always need new members, lest the team die out.
