Title: Seto; Let the Games Begin!
Post by: iamgoingtoeatyou on May 02, 2009, 09:19:17 PM
INTRODUCTION: SETO
(a modern asian nation)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg187.imageshack.us%2Fimg187%2F4391%2Fworldmapg.jpg&hash=59196aea866f103c2568dc0543b6b5ac4639a903)

Wiki Page: http://12colonies.net/wiki/index.php/Kingdom_of_Seto (http://12colonies.net/wiki/index.php/Kingdom_of_Seto)

Seto is located several miles south off the coast of Japan in the Pacific Ocean.

The country has numerous mountains, including several active volcanoes as the Ring of Fire runs through the country's northern coast. The mountains in the eastern side of Seto allow for the citizens to enjoy a mild climate throughout the year.

The capital city of the country, Hinawa, is the Seto's largest city and its financial epicenter. The metropolitan area is composed of 8.5 million, making it an incredibly dense city. Space in the city can skyrocket to almost 800$ (about 1,600 ujen - the country's currency) per square feet. Seto is known for its vast amounts of natural resources, its excellent transportation systems composed of buses, high-speed rail/elevated rail, subways, and bullet trains (or shinjaken). Seto has left-hand traffic, similar to countries like Australia and Britain.

Here's a mosaic that showcases many of the country's characteristics:

Terminal 1 was completed in 2003, 4 years after the completion of the airport island. The airport is served by the Green and Red lines of the Hinawa transit system. A monorail is planned for the airport to help solve overcrowding in the subway lines next year. Highway 22 runs parallel to the terminal and intersects the city's important Metropolitan Expressway near the Kubo District. It makes many stops and intersections to nearby highways. The front of the area features a small plaza and a large parking lot and parking garage to the left.

747s parked at Terminal 1; the elevated road that runs through the terminal can also been seen here.

In the eastern section of the island, a breakwater runs parallel to the runway to protect the edges from erosion.

Hope you enjoyed the first updates! More to come soon :)

The "country characteristics" mosaic is a really nifty idea, hotdogs.  I've been watching for this MD since I first heard about it- it certainly looks like it will live up to the buzz.

Good luck!

Kubo is one of Hinawa's most important business centers, and is one of the resident's favorites due to its lush surroundings near the harbor and many parks. The main train line of the city runs straight through the district before curving its way to the city's central station. In addition, the skyrail was recently added to the area to help transport people throughout the district, making a circular loop through Kubo. The airport's Highway 22 intersects the busy Hinawa Metropolitan Expressway that cuts through Kubo, bringing in thousands of workers to the area. The district usually empties out at night when the commuters head to home.

Wonderful work once again Daniel, the rail line behind buildings looks wonderful and make it realistic as what we can see in Japan. The little park next to the highway is nice and give a bit of "air" to that giant forest. Nice disposition of buildings and roads. All the building you use fit perfectly and make that city looking real. Also, the plaza along the highway is nice too !
Looking forward to more.

Take care,

Gujihaya is Hinawa's most exclusive shopping district. Oishna Avenue cuts through the district, dividing it in two, making a junction with Jungu Avenue in front of the Haismu Clockmakers Department Store. Call it the 5th avenue or Oxford Street of the city, all the major designer chains have stores on Oishna Avenue, including several Setonese flagship stores. The Hinawa Metropolitan Expressway circles the district, making it easy to reach any part of the city from this location.

Mizamotto is a district located in the northerneastern section of Hinawa, a couple of miles north of Kubo. It's famous for its canal systems that drain water from the Imperial Gardens back to the Bay of Hinawa. In the past few years, development in the area has skyrocketed, and many historical buildings were demolished to make way for modern skyscrapers. Today, it's an important business district and transit hub because the city's central station is located here.

Wow Daniel.. the trainstation is just freakin awesome!  It's almost a palace... I cannot imagine that people avoid this one - I for one would love to sit in a corner and zip my coffee while watching the crowds travelling through this masterpiece of architecture, with probably some great inside halls as well.....

If you're driving into Hinawa from any of Seto's major cities, chances are you'll likely pass over this bridge. Simply referred to as the Hinawa - Nujigu Bridge, it connects Hinawa to the neighboring city of Nujigu. Before the bridge was completed, citizens had to take a 40 minute long ferry across the bay; now that trip is shortened to 5-10 minutes depending on traffic flow. The bridge gets a large amount of traffic because it's the only bridge crossing the Bay of Hinawa and it connects to the Hinawa Metropolitan Expressway, the city's major highway and important artery. In 2005, a cargo ship crashed into the bridge's south tower, therefore water traffic has been rerouted to avoid the bridge altogether.

Hinawa is the largest city and capital of Seto (http://12colonies.net/wiki/index.php/Kingdom_of_Seto), an island nation in the Pacific Ocean. The country is a blend of Asian cultures and history that has transformed it from a small outpost to a large nation of millions. Seto has a complex transportation infrastructure and Hinawa is the country's main hub.  All the major companies are headquartered here, and many of the country's important landmarks are found within the city limits. Seto hopes to host the July 2009 Simlympic Games to introduce itself to the international community.

Part 1: Main Sport Venues

The Sports Village (http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/8628/overviewd.jpg) is located in the northern section of Hinawa, in a newly developed athletic and sports center. The main arenas are found here, and the Samsung Center is located in the northern edge of the village. It's easily accessible by bus, subway, or car from the nearby Mizamotto District. Shuttles leave the central station every 10 minutes during games and events. It'll be where many of the events of the Simlympics will take place, with secondary venues taking place in nearby areas.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg38.imageshack.us%2Fimg38%2F8971%2Fmainstadium.jpg&hash=1de88bfef71c3422076f9ba381a11a2e18f1ed42)

The Hinawa Dome is the largest of the arenas, and the main venue to play athletic games. It will be the site of the opening ceremonies and has a maximum capacity of 70,450 people.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg37.imageshack.us%2Fimg37%2F7328%2Fsecondstadium.jpg&hash=eb6ec0156e742a91ff4036d5824a673ff0cb97c9)

The Motorola Center is the 2nd largest arena, and the field (like all the other arenas) can be converted to play other athletic games. It has a maximum capacity of 53,200 people.

The final arena is Seto Railway Arena, which is also the smallest. It can be used in addition to the other arenas for the main sport venues and has a maximum capacity of 34,900 people.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg20.imageshack.us%2Fimg20%2F8519%2Fswimmingo.jpg&hash=d490b7d490d453d07278b1cb6be035d450406f73)

The Samsung Center is home to the swimming center and the indoor athletics center (http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/4125/teen.jpg) in the northern part of the village. The Samsung Tower can be used for T.V reporting and office space.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg20.imageshack.us%2Fimg20%2F1584%2Fvillageat.jpg&hash=b089e8d48837bed558f1c20ebfb7d68370c601bf)

Park Center (http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/4513/parkctr.jpg) is an island located right off Sports Village. There are three large towers that can be used for athletic accommodations, all of them with large central lobbies, apartments, and training facilities. There is a bridge connecting it to other satellite islands and a subway connection in the nearby plaza.

Part 2: Secondary Sport Venues

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg32.imageshack.us%2Fimg32%2F9219%2Fcanal.jpg&hash=4bb3d9eedc50dd7c5e879412c15f50774c8af17c)

The Imperial Canals located in nearby Mizamotto can be used for canoeing exercises. The long length will give the athletes a tough challenge.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg38.imageshack.us%2Fimg38%2F751%2Ffinishedmap.jpg&hash=6f69e8e50b56ec804e4d7782a7671e4ef0add326)

The Imperial Gardens have miles of cycleways for running & biking activities and a large pond that can be used (in addition to the canals) for water activities like rowing and canoeing.

The track can be easily converted for races with main seating in the western section of the track.

Part 3: Transport

Transportation is an important aspect of the games as visitors and athletes need to get to the correct venues quickly and efficiently.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg30.imageshack.us%2Fimg30%2F8831%2Fairporty.jpg&hash=a69ef51988b040791f2c3c715f4f1fcfd41795b5)

Hinawa International Airport is the easiest way to arrive in the city from abroad; flights arrive in the airport everyday.

The Metropolitan Expressway connects all districts of the city with numerous highway systems, bridges, and underground tunnels.

Part 4: Culture

The city also has many landmarks and cultural sites for visitors can enjoy in between venues.

Marina City is a relatively new development located several miles east of Kubo in Hinawa Harbour. It was sculpted in the late 1990's to create a satellite business center. The main route that passes the district is called the Hinawa Harbourside Expressway, and it cuts through the center of the island, ending at the edge of Marina City with an underwater tunnel. There is another road connection via the Metropolitan Bridge and a speedy monorail line that runs through the island. It connects Kubo's Skyrail in the lower level truss of the bridge. Marina City holds a number of department headquarters and offices, but it's usually quiet throughout the week.

5 June is World Environment Day; established by the UN to create global awareness about the environment. It also marked the completion of the Imperial Gardens Expansion Project. The main goal of the project was to create new attractions which included the addition of a new natural history exhibit to the Hinawa Museum. A huge fireworks display lit up Mizamotto's canal front, celebrating the completion of the project. About 3,500 trees were also planted in celebration of the event. Residents use the city's largest park as a calm retreat from the dense city.

I use to stop by over at the SCJU from time to time, but this is a much more convenient way of following Your City as I find it somewhat difficult to find and read the cityblogs over at SCJU.
It is also nice to read about the treeplanting effort, that will surely compensate for much of the pollution created in/by the city itself.
Did You lot the NAM- and Monorail Yourself? I have been looking for the NAM-pieces in the LE but couldn´t find them so any tips on that would be very much appriecated.

Today we'll be exploring the rural Maugana region. The region is home to numerous farm fields, bullet train lines, wind farms, and small towns.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg134.imageshack.us%2Fimg134%2F2261%2Fhighway.jpg&hash=2781654b226a1b2b04a48e93d4067d949063a6ff)

The S-18 Expressway is an easy way to travel through the region quickly and efficiently. It takes you from Hinawa to the center of Maugana in about 3 hours.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg232.imageshack.us%2Fimg232%2F930%2Fairfieldp.jpg&hash=b25095be621286b10473f828e7cd0da740c8716d)

Airstrips dot the region, and are an easy way to reach isolated areas of the country.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg144.imageshack.us%2Fimg144%2F429%2Fwindturbines1.jpg&hash=5f610bcb3b3d1a339378bb5d5a1d01eb149bee96)

Wind farms are very common here; they power many small towns and villages. They are part of an effort by the Setonese government to reduce carbon emissions.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg504.imageshack.us%2Fimg504%2F3946%2F70929628.jpg&hash=252e3802090a6a3750b815585309da4ae25b48a5)

From the wind farms, electricity is transported to power stations like the one above to be sent to homes and businesses.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg11.imageshack.us%2Fimg11%2F2584%2Fvolcano2.jpg&hash=5e42d1fb568474b9086eacd354c3861b5b1bc03e)

Mount Tuo, one of the tallest in Seto, is seen above covered by fog. A bullet train line passes right near the mountain, making a long journey quick and enjoyable.

Just a quick update before we arrive in our next destination ;)

@Swesim: Glad you're following! The monorail was actually a mix of using the high monorail pieces (from the NAM I assume) and photoshop to get the concrete under it.

Nice to see a "quickie" so soon, I wonder if the solarpanels will do much good due to the pollution seemingly put out by the factory next by...

COMMENTS

Luke09: The viaduct is like a bridge,  but in land. I just had to connect it to two high mountains and I got it to work, then I put a ground highway under it and photoshopped it to make it look like it was going under the viaduct.

Nexis4Jersey: Highway bridge ^, ground bullet train line: glitch that made the bullet train pylons disappear, so it looks like it's in the ground :P

Swesim: Ah, don't worry, that is just steam coming from the plant; if it was pollution, you'd see more black and dirty-looking smoke. It's a geothermal plant but I've been using it as a power station to help send electricity out to the region. Thanks for commenting!

As Hinawa got word that it would host the 2009 July Simlympics, city officials quickly got to work on updating the city to host the new visitors, athletes, and media coming for the events. These upgrades range from new ferry lines, subway expansions, more security & information booths, airport upgrades, and general enhancement of the city; many which you will see here.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg194.imageshack.us%2Fimg194%2F6066%2Fairporthinawa.jpg&hash=da29e54b50d7663a167a0b236284689ce8908bf8)

Hinawa International Airport's old Terminal 1 (above) was quickly falling to the pressures from new passengers and outdated technology. To welcome new visitors from the region, the terminal received a massive upgrade to help balance traffic in the airport. It now handles regional and domestic travel, while the newer Terminal 2 (below) handles international flights. Microbuses, taxis, city buses, and a subway line allow passengers to get to the Sports Village very efficiently.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi8.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa25%2Fdkruel05%2Fnewbridge.jpg&hash=b40520b3e4265f7c51a7f5403c3d2be7c6bd6473)

One of the bridges that connects the airport to the city was renovated to speed up traffic and commutes.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi8.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa25%2Fdkruel05%2Fnomoresr.jpg&hash=61ef06798789a01ecd45f15dc09cea3b8b3015d2)

After a discussion with ISC members, it was decided the SR Arena (http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/7231/3es.jpg) would be replaced with a new plaza that will hold the Simlympic torch. Along with the equestrian track, the new plaza will be a revamping of an existing venue. It should also help spread out the arenas and give visitors a place to relax.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg30.imageshack.us%2Fimg30%2F7253%2Fotheraren.jpg&hash=6e456a5b2186e1c10365244b317e431160f8d4ac)

Right next door is a new arena. It can help host the numerous indoor venues as it's next to the Samsung Center. The transport station across the street will help visitors get to the area.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi8.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa25%2Fdkruel05%2Fsamsungtower.jpg&hash=c817d7a9973d4737a9d7abba1716174b01567cf7)

News outlets covering the games are starting to move into the Samsung Tower; BBC, NBC and Seto's SBN (Seto Broadcasting Network) are all setting up there.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg188.imageshack.us%2Fimg188%2F3546%2Fnolabelhinawa.jpg&hash=d1143618bb811cc6a359cd524370fe78745623ae)

Located right off the Sports Village is Park Center, the soon-to-be home for the athletes. It's located in a part of the bay that contains many islands, including a vacant one across the bridge. The city officials decided to use the vacant island for a new training center.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg199.imageshack.us%2Fimg199%2F3020%2Fathecen.jpg&hash=b63e970672e7e9c054e99b1741043baa425ef9ff)

The Athletics Center was quickly constructed; a large building with a modern globe in the center. There are tennis courts, swimming pools, gyms, cafes and green spaces for the athletes.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg196.imageshack.us%2Fimg196%2F8950%2Fhsbc.jpg&hash=18fdae51db03bc9666b3394af47e44e88c833f19)

On another nearby island, the HSBC Arena has opened featuring a velodrome inside and an area for BMX events. It's another good example of the renovation on the old industrial islands.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg196.imageshack.us%2Fimg196%2F5484%2Fstreetbanners.jpg&hash=53ea4f4c5a2c95cd25ef00b1db480db94309a3f5)

Banners have been put up along Hinawa's major avenues announcing the 10th Simlympic Games. A new amphitheatre (http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/8657/bannersd.jpg) has been built nearby to hold plays and shows.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg193.imageshack.us%2Fimg193%2F9641%2Fnewmedian.jpg&hash=04992ae9ba849990943111f11823b56841463355)

The median that leads to the central station has been revamped with new banners, trees, and walkways for pedestrians.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg190.imageshack.us%2Fimg190%2F2518%2Fconvention.jpg&hash=34a4f50fe04f2756e30ccfc8e35575023498bd97)

The Mizamotto Convention Center has finally opened for business; it has a grand food hall with gourmet pork products.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg199.imageshack.us%2Fimg199%2F5347%2Farenar.jpg&hash=6f8f96287f9f28d7245b4d26482feb6061eac18f)

In the Luijnu District, the old arena was renovated to help with more indoor events planned for the games.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg199.imageshack.us%2Fimg199%2F682%2Fgujihaya11.jpg&hash=1ba90b0ad5af2ecc2d430a330ee13b189762c946)

Several new stores and shops have also opened up in the city, including several new hotels near the Gujihaya area. Although the official torch relay route hasn't been released yet, many speculate the torch will pass through this busy area of Hinawa.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi8.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa25%2Fdkruel05%2Fhotel.jpg&hash=9e15bda8792f310034c4ed1894a89239f73ad8e2)

One of the new hotels includes this one: The Cobb Imperial Gardens. It's in the northern section of the Gujihaya across the street from the park.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi8.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa25%2Fdkruel05%2Fhinawadome.jpg&hash=073c3d4e1254196817a1d7b1bb9b7010f52356f7)

Finally, over at the Hinawa Dome, there has been a stealthy buzz in the area. Many workers have been seen leaving the site late into the foggy night... What are they up to?

Thanks for stopping by, hope you follow the developments!

Awesome update. Some really interesting stuff going on :) I like all the redevelopment.

Also, have you thought about using FAR in the last pic instead of the weaving road pieces?

Very nice update. The city pics and the venue shots are very artistic. You've picked some great buildings that show well at night too. I can't wait to see what you've got in store for the simlympics.

JoeST: I haven't thought about using FAR yet, I only used those pieces in the city because they came with sidewalks to blend in the urban environment, but I've been wanting to experiment with FAR in my rural areas ;D

Connor: Thank you!

calibanX: I'm glad you like it, hope you enjoy the July games!

art128: Thank you Arthur!

Luke09: The stadium is a Japanese BAT, but I downloaded it here: http://hide-inoki.com/bbs/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=505 :)

What a great MD. Seto has given me many inspirations.  Is there any chance of seeing pictures of the whole area to get some perspective of the layout and where things are in relation to each other?
