I worked and terrafromed this map.  It has some common elements from other maps and from my own ideas.  What I have is a map with all large squares 16x15.  I am calling this Badger Bay.

Before we get going any further I should let you know how I play SC4.
1.  I use a lot of custom content.  If you have questions about what a building is, I will try to get you the name and the builder.  All content in here has been provided by many great creators and I thank each of them completely.
2.  I use money cheats.  I am not going for an economic model, I am going for aesthetics.  And for that I need money.  So I use the Moolah cheat. 
3.  If you have suggestions give them to me ... constructive criticism can only help.  Unconstructive criticism is just plain mean.  Please don't be mean.  Like one of my favorite sings Big Kenny says "Love Everybody."
4.  I am building as I go along.  So far I have two large squares done and am moving along.  You will get a story and I will try to make you apart of the process.

There are many people to thank and as some of their buildings you will see and I will try to thank them.  I can only hope that you enjoy this as much as I enjoyed making this.  So off we go....

Sheboygan County is nestled in the northwest of Badger Bay.  The main city in Sheboygan County is Sheboygan.

How did Sheboygan get its name?
Many different explanations have been made regarding the origin andn meaning of the name "Sheboygan. "Tradition says that an Indian chief resided at Sheboygan in the early part of the nineteenth century who was the father of a large number of daughters. Fortune, however, had not yet graced his household with a son. One day after returning from the hunt his wife ran forth from the wigwam to greet him and present him with a newly born babe. The stalwart chief looked at it sharply and (so the story goes) replied in a disgusted manner -- "She-boy-(a)-ga(i)n!" Although the tradition is very interesting, it has no historic basis and must be discarded as the true explanation of origin of the name.


This word has an Indian origin. There are a number of words of two principal meanings from which it may have been derived. One series is said to mean any hollow object such as a pipe stem, reed, cane stalk, or hollow bone; or that with which one perforates or pierces through, hence a needle or awl. The other meaning refers to a passage away by water, or a riverdisappearing underground, or a noise underground.


SHEBOYGAN COUNTY - Area 1 ... You will find this area on the edge of Devil's Lake.  This is where you will find the largest city in Sheboygan County.  Sheboygan.  It is the county seat and it is a bustling city of approximately 42,000.

As you can tell the City of Sheboygan has I-90 running through the length of it.  At the bottom I-90 connects with the E-45.
an I in front of an interstate means that it goes international.  In otherwords it goes off the map into the SimCity world.  An E in front is an internal interstate or expressway.  It only travels inside the boundries of Badger Bay. 

Sheboygan has a rail system, though it is mainly for freight.  A large bus network is throughout the city and helps with many transportation problems.  I personally don't see this city growing larger than 50,000.  You will also notice on this map a rural area of farms.  The famrs on the outskirts of Sheboygan and are in the small town of Edens.  Edens has a population of under 500 and is mainly a farming community.

Sheboygan is a natures paradise.  Much of the shores of Devil's Lake is not built upon and the creek running though town is Cedar Creek.  Along both Devil's Lake and Cedar Creek you will find walking/biking trails.  Sheboygan has an extensive trail that runs from the center of town down along Cedar Creek then along Devil's Lake and ending up in Lake Park on the cities northwest side.

The City of Sheboygan downtown is in the City Centre.  The City Centre is approximately in the middle of Sheboygan and houses a large plaza park(Thank you BSC).  It also has many government buildings including the County Courthouse, Police Headquarters, University of Badger Bay-Sheboygan County, the hospital and other buildings.

I like it, tkirch. The map is awesome, and I appreciate your combination of photos at different zoom levels along with the transport map. The parks are nicely decorated as well.

That's a huge map you have there, very abitious, so I wish you good luck.

I like the plaza square, very nice.  And I also like the county court house - I don't think I've seen that one before.

Interesting how you've made the city centre in a kind of square.  My one question would be how the buildings to the west of the city centre (in the overview picture) would access the centre.  It looks as though the residents would have to travel a long way around on roads to get to the jobs and civic amenities in the centre.  Maybe they need to be connected more directly???  Just a suggestion.

...and watch BB really closely.  It took about a year, Todd, to get 3RR to where you are just starting out from.  I'm amazed by the map, and in love with the detail you're providing.

paroch:  It may a look that way but there are actually four roads that enter into City Centre.  Plus the I-90 entrance is right there.  My commute time is real low and I will show this in some upcoming photos to demonstrate this.

DavidSo glad you could stop in, since you were my inspiration.  This map has taken months to build to where it is.  Dedgren Creek will always be yours.

Now that we have set some of the stage for Sheboygan lets take a look at some of the highlights from around the city.  To the west of City Centre you may have noticed a number of large apartments and condos.  This is by far the largest built up area of the city.  This area is the only area that has these larger buildings growing in.  As you can tell from the overviews of Sheboygan, Sheboygam is not a city of skyscrapers but their are some bigger buildings.  About the size you may find in a city of 50,000.

The city has many small neighborhoods but is the condo/apartment section that the population is the densest.  Let's take a look at this area ...

Next I would like to take you on a tour of some of the civic buildings in Sheboygan.  These would be the properties the city runs such as schools, libraries, fire station, police stations, hospitals, and well you get the picture.

First let's take a look at the hospital that can be found in City Centre.  We skipped this in our City Centre tour but here it is ...

Where does the power for Sheboygan come from?  Well years ago the city contracted with the Hardun Corporation.  They built the Hardun Coal Plant to power most of Sheboygan County.

Before I go into some more pictures and I do have more of the City of Sheboygan.  I was wandering if any of the great graphic people could help me out out there.  I need a banner for an upcoming part of the MD ... The Badger Bay Art Gallery.  You will find out exactly what that is in the future.  But I am looking for a really neat Banner, something that is artistic yet elegant that could work for the banner to be placed on it.  It will be used for posts throughout this MD and like I said it is something special I am working on.  You can see my banner skills kind of stink.  My Badger Bay was a crop picture.  I am limited in those skills.

First let me start by sayign you have the makings of a great MD. You've developed a history, and from the looks of it are planning a future of it as well. The layout of the city looks pretty good. There is plenty of available parking which adds some realism, and your selection of buildings is good too (I also like that you have linked to a few of the buildings you have showcased. The condo complex is a very interesting area. You were really able to break up the grid concept of the game with those selections, and it looks pretty good that way. I think my favorite areas of the recent updates have been the plaza square and the park. Both are well made. The whole area looks like a good place to live. Good luck with this, and I'll be keeping an eye out for the next update.

It looks like you have a realistic balance between R, C and I which can be a tricky achievement.

Devil's Lake is known for its fantastic fishing. Try out Devil's Lake in the summer for some great walleye and pike fishing. Or better yet, brave the cold and have the time of your life catching those famous Devil's Lake Jumbo Perch and whopping walleye while out ice fishing. If you haven't tried Devil's Lake yet, you are missing out on some awesome fishing and hunting fun!

The promise of superior fishing banks had drawn the first settlers to Devil's Lake in the 1830s. Fishing camps supplied nearby markets in Badger Bay, allowing the region to remain a significant regional fishing center throughout the 19th century. The area remained rich in commercial and sport fishing well into the 20th century because of the lack of growth in heavy industry in the area. Production levels declined from 1880 to 1900 due to over fishing and depressed markets, but rebounded in the first decades of the 20th century.

Today throughout the year you will find boats out on Devil's Lake either sport fishing, recreational fishing or commercial fishing.

Did you do the "Catch 'em All" artwork in Illustrator? It's a nice logo and adds a nice touch of quality to the presentation.
You are using many of the waterfront elements I plan to use in one of my cities. But IMO, choosing and using BATs is like choosing and using words. We all have access to the same ones, but the way we put them together reflects our own individuality. I think your arrangement looks great!
Also, I love your water mod and wonder which one it is. I've tried many but none of them display to my liking.

The Sheboygan Common Council passed a tax increment financing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tax_increment_financing) program for the commercial area surrounding the City Centre.  The increased revenue was used to finance improvements to the University of Badger Bay-Sheboygan County.  Along with the improvements, the city also gave zoning rights to some developments in the City Centre.  Included are two new office buildings and a brand new library for the University.

Public Transportation Saves $6,200 Per Household, 1.4 Billion Gallons of Gasoline

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) released a groundbreaking new study finding that public transportation use saves 1.4 billion gallons of gasoline every year, and can reduce household expenses by $6,200 – more than the average household pays for food in a year.

"This should be a wake-up call as Congress and the President discuss how America can move towards energy independence," said APTA President William W. Millar. "Public transportation provides Americans with greater freedom, access, opportunity and choice. Ridership is up over 25 percent since 1995, because Americans knew instinctively that it saves money and gasoline. Now we know exactly how much."

The study, "Public Transportation and Petroleum Savings in the U.S.: Reducing Dependence on Oil," was prepared for APTA by ICF International. It finds that:

-Public transportation usage reduces U.S. gasoline consumption by 1.4 billion gallons each year – or the equivalent of 108 million cars filling up, almost 300,000 each day. These savings result from the efficiency of carrying multiple passengers in each vehicle; the reduction in traffic congestion from fewer automobiles on the roads; and the varied sources of energy for public transportation. If twice as many Americans had the choice of taking public transportation, these gasoline savings would at least double to 2.8 billion gallons each year.

-Households that are likely to use public transportation on a given day save over $6,200 every year, compared to a household with no access to public transportation service. These households have two workers, one car and are within three-quarters of a mile of public transportation.

"Who says there's no such thing as a free lunch?" Millar said. "According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average U.S. household spends $5,781 on food – and people who are likely to take public transportation can easily save more than that in a year."

"As the new Congress begins working on energy legislation, we call on them to make sure that public transportation plays a central role in reducing our dependence on foreign oil," Millar said.

St. Micheal's Church

This is one of my favorite buildings ever batted.  It is the St Michaels Church by Jule78 (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=3374&v=1).

In 1903, Father Steven Farley, opened a small church in Sheboygan.  At that time it was the first catholic church in Sheboygan County.  It was a very small church, eventually the city expanded as did his parishoners.  Well Father Farley befriended and helped many of the cities movers and shakers.  On his deathbed in 1937 at the age of 93, Father Farley was told of a donation large enough to build a new church across the Sheboygan's new City Centre.  He asked for one thing to name the church after the archangle St Michael.  Seven years later the church was finished.  Father Farley was laid to rest in the cemetary besides the new church.  Now St. Michaels is the largest Catholic Church in Sheboygan County.

The church is stunning, and you've done a good job of creating realistic surroundings. Many churches are adjacent cemeteries, but I think the playground is an especially clever touch. And I like the story line, too.

rooker1  - Thanks.  I know what you mean about the mansions.  You get them and then you think where do I put these behemoths.  But right from the beginning I had decided on a place for them when I did get them.  I think you can over do it if you have them in every city.

szymcar - Thank you for the great comments.  The 4 Coit Towers I had no choice, they grew there.  I grow most of the office buildings and those popped up.  On one picture they aren't there and on the next they were.  As for the car park, you need places for people to park to go to the Police HQ, Courthouse, or take a stroll in the park.  I figured it wasn't realistic if you don't have a lot of parking.

jmouse - I have to say I didn't decorate those.  Those are all BSC reward lots.  And there are many more of the reward mansions too.

Yoman - I think one may be foreclosed on.  Get it real cheap.

I've been browsing through the 3 pages and I must say that I'm impressed. I really like the buildings you use and it's great how you have gotten them look together so well. You say an update is coming soon so I'll wait with the rest of my comment until I have seen that one :)

They settled on Cedar's Creek andthe shore of Devil's Lake and began to buy land there in 1836. James and Elisha the eldest were the first to appear in the 1840 Sheboygan County census along with Joel and Cornelius their nephews, sons of Jessie who followed shortly afterwards. Jessie and Dorothy Wills Davis Edens followed them from Marmaris Co. to Sheboygan and their first record of obtaining land around the Devil's Lake waters and Cedar Creek was the years of 1847 to 1850. Jessie bought on Cedar Creek and Joel first on Cedar Creek and then Mill's Pond in 1847 and 1848.  In 1855 Jessie's son, Tom bought some land along a small pond a couple miles south of Cedar Creek. Ten years later Tom incorporated the little town that sprung up around his farm and named it after his family Edens.  Tom was the towns first mayor and helped develop some major trading routes within the local Indian tribes.  Today there are many descendants of the early Edens families and all of them could trace their heritage back to the first few.

NEW PLOPPABLE WATER


I wanted to make a ploppable river.

So first you go into god-mode and use the shallow valley tool.  Make it the size you want.  And begin to drag it along the route you want to take.

Well, I was in the midst of a reply two hours ago when we lost power here in Arkansas. So back to the subject at hand.
The overviews look terrific, and Eden's pond is magnificent. That looks like TPW, but whatever it is, you've put it together very well.
The farms are a joy to see, and I wonder if those fields are available for download?? The variegated colors in the second photo (in your reply #52) really caught my eye, but all the farms and fields are beautiful.
I also like the neighborhoods, and I salute you for doing a great job. :thumbsup:

WOW Page 4 already and not even a week old.  Thanks everyone!  Like I said before as I go along I try new things to make the enjoyment of this MD better and the flow of it better.  So with that being said I always grab ideas from other MD's and this one comes from a faithful follower of mine as I am of hers, jmouse.  Wildcat Junction (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=2635.0) uses a numbering system on her pictures and I like that idea, so here will be mine.  So you can always have a picture number to reference back to.  Thanks Joan.

S2-1 -Where we are in Badger Bay

This square is a rural square as much of Sheboygan County is.  A large number of farms dot the landscape.  But there are three small towns in this large square. 
Freemont - The largest of the three.  Freemont has a good mix of industry, commercial and residential development.
Mill Pond - A small community that sprung up around a train station, as often in rural towns do.
Princeton - Another small town that sprung up on two major intersections.
Hatley - An unincorporated village that sprung up around a Grain Freight Station

We will go into detail on each of these towns when we go into the pictures of them.

S2-5 -An overlook that was built along Highway 23 that goes along Cedar Creek.  Highway 23 is a long road with not much between the City of Sheboygan and the town of Freemont.  A traditional country highway.  Well a gas station sprung up next to a rest stop.  The rest stop was built on a bend in Cedar Creek and an overlook was built so travelers could have a nice photo-op.  First a Zoom 3 shot.

Freemont

Freemont is a town in Sheboygan County.  The population is small at 3,125 according to the last census.  Freemont was established on a trade route from Badger Bay to the nation north of Badger Bay, Santa Fernando.  The town was named after two early settlers in this area William Freeman and Jefferson Montgomery.  The two opened up a lodge for weary travlers in the early 1800's.  They soon built a saloon, a house of ill repute, and a large cattle farm.  Much of the land around Freemont was owned buy these two individuals and their families.  In 1863, years after their deaths the town was finally incorporated and was named Freemont.  Today it is a small industrial town and is no longer on a major trade route seeing that I-90, miles to the west, has taken much traffic away from this area. 

The town is a sleepy tight little blue collar town.  This close knit town has gone through many changes to bring it to where it is today.  But the foundation of family and hardwork that William Freeman and Jefferson Montgomery started in this area with is the foundation of Freeman.

Before I go into any pictures of Freemont, I want to show some changes that I did from the original.  I had started this square a week or two ago and let it grow to where it is.  But when I first built it, the pond in the middle was made with scorchin's water.  Well since then Jeronij's transparent water came out.  Well this is what I did, a little change.  Watch as the change progresses.

I love the step-by-step process of building that pond you showed us, my friend! You're quite the teacher! Also, I don't know if I mentioned it before, you're doing a fantastic job all around here. I think we'll all be following along here with you for a long time!

And thanks for the TPW tutorial. It usually takes me awhile to adapt to new ideas, but once I do, I enjoy experimenting with them.

Mill Pond

Mill Pond is a small village of about 1100 residents.  Mill Pond grew into a small village when a local farmer, Billy Bob, opened a small General Store (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_store).  He filled a need for the local farmers.  Instead of having to travel many miles to Freemont or further, they could now go to Billy Bob's General Store.  Over the years local workers in the farms started putting up roots around Billy Bob's store.  Soon a church popped up, then a post office.  It wasn't soon after the post office opened that the village incorporated and started its own local governemnt.  Throughout this time Billy Bob's store was a staple of Mill Pond.  Over the years the store grew with the village.  Many years later, long after Billy Bob has passed, the store is still owned by descendants of his and Billy Bob's Emporium has now grown into over seventy stores throughout Sheboygan County.  But it all started out in Mill Pond.

Although Native Americans have farmed in Sheboygan County since the Woodland Period (about 3,000 years ago), the European settlers who arrived in the 19th century were not at first drawn to farming. Instead the lure of underground mineral wealth attracted the first few thousand settlers to the lead region of northwest Sheboygan County in the 1820s.

Everything began to change in the 1830s when government surveyors began laying out townships and making detailed examinations of the Badger Bay landscape. Armed with copies of the surveyors' notes, land seekers and speculators began to purchase land from government land offices, paving the way for Badger Bay's agricultural future.

Farming held the widest and most lasting appeal for the immigrants who began coming in increasing numbers in the 1830s. Upon arriving, immigrants were usually anxious to find a good farm site and to raise a crop before winter to feed their families and to sell for additional supplies. Nearly 5,000 farms a year were carved out of the Badger Bay landscape in the 1840s.

Wheat was the earliest and most important cash crop in Badger Bay because it required a small initial capital investment and was fairly easy to grow. From 1840 to 1880, one-sixth of the wheat grown in Badger Bay came from Sheboygan County. Despite its early success and appeal to new homesteaders, however, wheat began to fall from favor in the late 1850s as farmers faced stiff competition from wheat farmers in neighboring states. The following decade, disaster struck Sheboygan County wheat farmers when a disease called wheat rust and tiny insects known as chinch bugs destroyed crops. To remain profitable, farmers had to find new, different, and more manageable crops.

For some, the wheat disaster was a blessing in disguise. Since the 1850s, agricultural reformers had urged farmers to diversify their plantings and to restore depleted soil through crop rotation and fertilization. The Civil War stimulated Badger Bay's wheat production for a time but it also encouraged experimentation and specialization with other farm products. Some of these experiments were little more than fleeting endeavors, like the Todd County hops craze of the 1860s. Others proved more lasting.

Farmers in Stockton County, for example, pioneered the state's cranberry industry in the bogs just north of Berlin, Badger Bay. Production soon expanded into the bogs of the central counties. Areas of southern Badger also began specializing. Farmers in Stricker, Jackson, and Marmaris counties in particular found success with tobacco. Many other farmers turned to feed crops like corn, oats, and hay to feed the thousands of cows producing milk, cheese, and butter for Badger Bay's growing dairy industry. In 1890, Badger Bay ranked first, second, and third nationally in the production of rye, barley, and oats.

Commercial fruit and vegetable cultivation, particularly of peas, began to dominate agricultural production in certain counties in the late nineteenth century. Nearly 30 percent of the state's potatoes, a basic food source for many farmers, came from Todd, Sheboygan, and Ozaukee counties throughout the early twentieth century. Green peas, sweet corn, cucumbers, snap beans, lima beans, and beets all became important commercial crops in the 1880s and Badger Bay soon led the nation in the production of vegetables for processing. And after much trial and error, apples, cherries, and strawberries emerged as viable commercial crops in a few regions of the state.

As many farmers prospered in central Badger Bay, others, particularly newer immigrants, tried to stake claims in the northwestern "cutover" counties left decimated by logging in the early twentieth century. Despite strong promotional efforts and state aid to help settlers remove stumps, the region did not prove conducive to farming.

Although farmers in the cutover region of northern Badger Bay were largely unsuccessful, agricultural production flourished throughout the rest of the state. To match the increasing scale and production levels of the state's agriculture, enterprising businessmen quickly established businesses that supplied tools and equipment to farmers. The agricultural machinery industry expanded across the southern portion of the state after the Civil War but remained strongest in the southeast where Meadowlark, McCormick, and Farmall were located.

Badger Bay remains a leading agricultural state of Sim Nation. One of the greatest changes in farming over the last few decades has been the general decline in family farming and the subsequent rise in corporate farming.

capo - I appreciate your comments.  It's always a crap shoot when it comes to the buildings growing.  I keep some of the buildings out that I don't want to use.  My plugin folder is so sub divided that its easy to do.  As for the pond, thank you for the kind words.  The new transparent mayor mode water looks so great.  There is some mor egreat stuff it looks like coming out that may make them better.  If I could only get a decent looking pier made for these ponds it would be even better.  Everything I try in lot editor looks crappy.

SIDE NOTES
Looking through my MD and some of the posts I was thinking maybe I didn't do a great job in possibly explaing the origin of Badger Bay.  I look at Badger Bay as an individual state in a fictitious nation.  Right now I call it SimNation.  Maybe sometime I will come up with a better name.  But in my mind SimNation is set up the way the United States is set up with individual states with their own state governements but are still under the control of the Federal government SimNation.  Badger Bay has a state capital and each county has their own local governments as do cities, villages and towns.  So when you read the stories I put in here, you may now have a better understanding of where I am coming from.

And then once again thank you all for reading my little MD.   Coming on here and seeing how many people read it encourage me to keep going.  And I love suggestions so don't hold back and crticism is always good, its how I learn.

Princeton

Location: Two miles south of Princeton at the junctions of County Trunk A, County Trunk TA, and Highway 12.

History: Explorers first came to the Princeton area looking for lumber in 1847. What they found was a vast forest of elm. Timber crews followed and the logging business got started.

The first house built in this area was in 1849. It was a shanty used as a stopping place and was under a big elm on an old hunting trail which would later become Highway 12.  The next shanty and first real place of entertainment was built in 1854. A short time later it passed into the hands of A. B. Damon, who is regarded as the first permanent white settler.

Princeton was named in honor of John S. Prince, who built a sawmill in Sheboygan in the early 1850's to manufacture lumber from the vast amounts of lumber coming from this area. The village of Princeton was laid out and platted in the winter of 1855 by Samuel Ross, James W. Gillam, Dorilius Morrison, John S. Prince, and Richard Chute. Although the village plat was recorded on April 19, 1856, in Sheboygan County, the village was at first a part of the township of and was not separated until March 5, 1877.

In 1890, agriculture was taking the place of the lumber industry as the mainstay of the village. Wheat was grown extensively in the Princeton area, but potatoes became the most important crop produced. In 1901 and 1902 Princeton became the largest primary potato market in the Northwest. During this time nearly every grower had quite an appreciable number of culls in his crop for which he could receive only a small price, if anything, on the market. It became apparent that there was a need for a starch factory in this village to use these culls. Therefore, on March 26, 1890, the Princeton Potato Starch Company was incorporated. Potatoes came in rapidly and the starch factory ran day and night. Later a second starch factory was erected. By 1926, potato growing in this area on a large scale had practically ceased due to the soil becoming exhausted for potato growing. Growers were also having difficulty with diseases because they were not using certified seed stock and the leaf hoppers (insects) were giving them no end of trouble.

I have only three pictures of Hatley.  Mainly because Hatley is just a tiny little area that sprung up around a rail grain elevator for the farmers.  Some of the people that work in the silo and the nearby famrs live in this small unicorporated area.

It's been a while since I visited your MD and boy, you've been BUSY!

Some fabulous updates there and I particularly like your farming areas, you've done an amazing jobe with those.  I alos like your explanation about Badger Bay being part of Sim Nation.  That is exactly how I see it.  Maybe Badger Bay and West End are pretty close to each other in Sim Nation.  The West End parliament will be sending some city planners over to Badger Bay to get some more ideas, that's for sure.

I'll make sure I pop by more regularly in future.

I just read 5 pages of your great MD.. and im still as exited as I was on the first page when you introduced Sheboygan county.  The rural communities that you show here are very realistic and appealing. Thanks, I will be back to see more of it... :thumbsup:

First I would like to thank everyone for helping me move up to Ones To Watch.  It was a nice surprise with only a week and a half into this.

Now onto our next area of Sheboygan County.  This area consists of two towns, each on opposite sides of Potters Lake.  On the northeast side right where the E-45 spur ends is Henderson.  On the other side of Potters Lake is Langly. 
Potter's Lake draws people from all over as a great quiet recreational area.  Potters Lake is known more for its great boating and watersking then fishing.  Though you can catch some nice nice bluegill and sun fish.  You will often find during the summer tourists and weekend dwellers enjoying the fun of Potters Lake.  Around Potters Lake you will find homes and cabins dotting the landscape as people come to enjoy water fun.

H-1: Henderson Fly-By Mosaic

Henderson has a long and storied history.  Henderson was established in 1838 by German immigrants originally as Hamm.  {LINK}Hamm (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamm) was named after a city in Germany where a large number of the immigrants came from.  Here in Hamm, the German immigrants started a vibrant farming and fishing community around the lake.  The tiny town slowly grew and became known for having the first Catholic Church in Sheboygan County in 1853.  St Lukes Catholic Church was formed by an English immigrant by the name of Father Potter.  St Lukes was established on the northwest side of the lake.    In 1878, the lake was given the name Potters Lake after Father Potter.  Father Potter is famous for being the first and only priest from Badger Bay to be named to the {LINK}College of Cardinals (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/College_of_Cardinals) in 1872.
In 1892, Hamm changed it's name to Henderson.  The name Henderson comes from one of the most famous people in all of Badger Bay, Nathaniel Henderson.  Nathaniel Henderson was the first Governor of Badger Bay.  He was nominated in 1881 and stayed there till his death in 1891.  He was born in raised in Hamm and tragically he died here.  In 1891 on a family vaction he drowned in Potter's Lake.  To this day you can still come and visit Nathaniel Henderson's Birthplace.
Over the years Henderson and the surrounding area became a popular vacation spot.  In the summer you will find lots of tourists on the lake enjoying the warm waters and great beaches.  From boating to golf, there is plenty to do in the area. 
Currently the population of Henderson is 5,650 and is situated off the E-45 Freeway spur that comes off I-90.  Just a few miles from the City of Sheboygan, people travel to here all summer long.

Very interesting update, tkirch. The history is intriguing, and something very similar probably has happened somewhere in the RL world.

Great presentation, interesting general views, very nice atmosphere of this place, and last pictures of the Ives Grove Country Club (especially the first one) are fantastic!
Also Henderson is a great place, I like the general view and ruins of the St Luke's Church

And finally I have a question out there for anyone with some computer knowledge.   Everytime I load up the new Office 2007 onto my Dell Latitude. 2.ghz Dual Core with 2gigs of Ram, my computer runs fine for a day or two and then it will only start up in safe mode till I restore it back to the time before I loaded up Office 2007.  It works for two days then down.  It has done it four times now and it is frustrating. I tried to google for an answer and can't find one.  Someone have any ideas

A well deserved award, the amount of side-information you give together with pictures of great quality, makes this a very interesting MD. I can't tell you why, but that picture of Nathaniel Hendersons Birthplace is my favorite of your last update. I tend to look at pictures posted as a painting, and that is one painting I wouldn't mind having on my wall :)

Great update (again!). It's kind of funny to see a highway ending in a small village like Henderson, but it's a dream of a picture in night mode  :thumbsup:  And after seeing the splendid golf courses, it's indeed clear that such a highway spur is needed in Summer when the citizins of Sheboygan will drive en-masse this is corner of their county  :satisfied:

Our next tour of Henderson will take us on some of the popular spots that are in Henderson for tourists.  You will find some of the locals also enjoying these spots.

Our first look will be at the pier and marina on Potter's Lake.

HT-1: North Pier - North Pier was built in 2003 when the original pier got destroyed in a tornado that swept through this area of Sheboygan County.  The tornado not only wrecked the pier but many buildings were destroyed but thanks to early warnings no one was seriously injured.  But in the aftermath a man named James Ford conned a number of individuals and took close to $500,000 from the local citizens in an insurance scam.  Mr Ford disappeared in an airplane crash on September 22, 2004 somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean on a flight out of Sydney Australia.

Congratulations on your award.  Badger Bay has literally burst onto the MD scene.  It's still so new but you've given us so much in terms of updates, pictures, history and background. 
Thanks for your words re West End.  I thought I was working on a big map, but Badger Bay is huge!

In the last couple of updates the "stand outs" for me are:

The golf course (just released one myself, so know the work that must have gone into it).  I like the way the course is next to the shore, adds a nice dimension.

The marina.  That is a nice lot there and it's been placed perfectly. 10 out of 10.

Main Park.  I like that park a lot.  Not sure what it is that makes it so special, but it works really well.

Henderson is looking good overall, so I look forward to seeing some more. :thumbsup:

Nice update, tkirch, and the waterfront elements are especially eye catching. Love the night shots, of course, but all of it looks good.
And if you ever get down south, you might enjoy a crawfish festival. We boil them in spicy Cajun seasonings and wash them down with a few beers!

A little more history first of Henderson.  Hednerson was for the most part of its history was a quiet country town.  As the nearby metropolis of Sheboygan grew, Henderson begin to get more and more visitors.  Summer homes begin to pop up along Potter's Lake and Henderson begin to see an influx of people.  But the real growth came in 1973, when Badger Bay built the E-45 Expressway spur off of I-90 and brought that to the edge of Henderson.  Before that country roads were getting way too much traffic for its original purpose and accidents were a common place.  In 1971, there were actually 31 deaths on County Trunk LL that leads into Henderson.

Well with the E-45 spur more visitors came and entrepreneurs began to come forward and build inns, motels, hotels, and bed and breakfasts.  This little sleepy town begin to grow, with the amount of tourists jobs became abundant and people moved in and slowly this very little town grew.  Through varios land grants and zoning regulations, the Henderson Common Council is holding the growth at where it is and allowing a lot of open spaces to flourish and to keep some of the peace and tranquility that has always been a part of Henderson, here.

This is a special update to thank everyone for supporting my MD.  And also to celebrate getting moved to OF SPECIAL INTEREST THIS MONTH.  Also to celebrate post 100.   Thank you all.

For our special update we are going back to visit a past area.  The City of Sheboygan.  Sheboygan has quite a commercial population and with it being so far to the northwest of Badger Bay, I-90 is a long travel to get to the more bustling areas of Badger Bay.  So after some clamoring, the Badger Bay State Senate has financed a municipal airport for the area.  The airport was named in the honor of General Theodore Bear.  General Bear is best known for helping in the modernization of the SimNation Army.  He was originally from Badger Bay and specifically Sheboygan County.  We haven't yet seen his birth place but we will get there.  So on to the General Theodore Bear Municipal Airport.

Let's show the area that will be the are for it.  This nice open area off the industrial corridor and off the I-90 seems like a good area.

Next it was determined that a road would not be able to handle all the new traffic, so the road would be replaced with an avenue.  This caused the government having to buy Overnight Transportation under {LINK} EMININENT DOMAIN. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eminent_domain)  The new avenue would replace Industrial Road that was connected to I-90 and led to the Sheboygan Public Works and Landfill.  It would also connect with Douglass Avenue that ran north to south connecting downtown Sheboygan to the Industrial area.

The avenue gets built.  This reconstruction of infrastructure cost in excess of 7.3 million and took close to a year.  At the same time the airport was being built at a cost of 39 million that would be paid through bonds and a SimNation Grant.

You've given us a great story / history together with some really good pics.  I like the one with Motel 8.  The trees you are using fit the area so very well.  H3-8 is a briliant picture as well.
The California Pizza Kitchen is a nice BAT, thanks for the link, I think I'll take that one.

I like your narrative for the General Bear Airport.  It's good to show us how you changed things to make way for the airport and its transportation links.  Judging by the amount of buses travelling to and from the airport I suspect you may have to provide another public transport link soon.

The mini business airport is quite cute, particularly the terminal building.  I think my only other comment would be that with the pre-built airports the runways seem a bit on the short side.

Great work there, I look forward to more.

Hey, tkirch, those updates look good. I'm kind of partial to H3-9 because I grew up in a white house with green shutters!  :)
H3-1 is an area of great interest for a different reason, though. Coming off a major highway onto a short stretch of avenue that ends in a crossroad definitely is an area worth watching. As the city matures, I'd be very interested to see some traffic data on that intersection from time to time.
BTW, is Henderson a small, medium or large city (quad)?
Anyway, keep those terrific photos (especially the night shots) coming! :thumbsup:

Excellent update! I think the pictures you posted have convinced me to also install that night-mod. Again I must compliment you on the use of colour, it gives the pictures you post just that extra touch.

When I read the text with the pictures it seems I'm actually reading into the mind of a RL mayor, everything so carefully planned. Yeah the Special of the Month award is a well deserved one

capo:  Thank you again for the kind words.  I also like to make the pictures in my MD like they are worthy of being framed and also able to tell the story I am looking for.  This night mod is great, just adds a bit more.  And you can take lighter pictures because it goes from lighter to darker.

sebes: Its a tough choice as to whether to bring the highway over or not.  My thought was that if this is a high tourist area, the government would like to have a good route instead of country roads. And thanks for checking in.

paroch: Paul, thanks for looking in and the kind words.  Much appreciated.  I love huge maps though it is very daunting when I look what I have to do, but I am having a lot of fun doing it too.  As for the airports I agree, I tried to make one with the modular ones but my first attempt was pretty hideous.  Hopefully when I get to a much bigger airport in the larger cities I will make them look realistic.  Its hard to find that balance.  I wish there were better already lotted ones but there aren't.

jmouse: Joan thanks for looking in again.  Oh and I love crawfish.  I have had crawfish many times in Kiln, Mississippi, I get down there once a year.  As for Henderson it is on a large square.  All my squares are large.  But I don't see Henderson getting any bigger then it is.  There is another smaller town on the opposite side of Potter's Lake which I will show in a future update.  I will show some traffic data but its not that heavy surprisingly.  A lot of travel on the rail between here and Sheboygan.

I really like the little details in the pictures. Picture 1 for an example: the fences of the homes beside the road. All generally in the same style, like you see in many suburbs.

Again a compliment for the nice colour of your pictures, I really like how you not overcrowd your woods with seasonal trees. One or two carefully placed autumn trees look so much better then big random seasonal woods, it's something I do also..a nice greenish forest with a seasonal autumn tree every now and then for variation. I like the trees from JRJ's street side mod, I personally use the SFBT one so it's nice to see what another mod does. I must ask, the white-brick pavement next to the streets. Where did you find that one? I've used SMP's sandstone mod too many times, I think this would be an excellent replacement!

SHEBOYGAN COUNTY

CITIES IN SHEBOYGAN COUNTY
Sheboygan - Nestled in the northwest part of Sheboygan County it is found on the western edge of Devil's Lake.   Sheboygan is the County Seat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/County_seat) of Sheboygan County.  The city is a blue collar town with a strong manufacturing population but they also take their education seriously.  A Univeristy of Badger Bay campus is nestled in the center of the city and is currently in the midst of a major upgrade to the facilities as they have gotten a huge donation to add a football field and to build some new buildings to help alleviate the large amount of students from around the county.  UBB-Sheboygan County is best known for their agriculture program.  They have some farms out in Sheboygan County that are used for education as well as research.
One of Sheboygans biggest industries is fishing.  The fishing in Devil's Lake is some of the best for walleye, pike, and perch.  Cedar Creek flows through the city offering some beautiful views and an extensive park system throughout the city.

TOWNS IN SHEBOYGAN COUNTY
Freemont - Freemont is a town in Sheboygan County.  Freemont was established on a trade route from Badger Bay to the nation north of Badger Bay, Santa Fernando.  The town was named after two early settlers in this area William Freeman and Jefferson Montgomery.  The two opened up a lodge for weary travlers in the early 1800's.  They soon built a saloon, a house of ill repute, and a large cattle farm.  Much of the land around Freemont was owned buy these two individuals and their families.  In 1863, years after their deaths the town was finally incorporated and was named Freemont.  Today it is a small industrial town and is no longer on a major trade route seeing that I-90, miles to the west, has taken much traffic away from this area. 
Population at First Census: 5,653
Henderson - Henderson has a long and storied history.  Henderson was established in 1838 by German immigrants originally as Hamm.  {LINK}Hamm was named after a city in Germany where a large number of the immigrants came from.  Here in Hamm, the German immigrants started a vibrant farming and fishing community around the lake.  The tiny town slowly grew and became known for having the first Catholic Church in Sheboygan County in 1853.  St Lukes Catholic Church was formed by an English immigrant by the name of Father Potter.  St Lukes was established on the northwest side of the lake.    In 1878, the lake was given the name Potters Lake after Father Potter.  Father Potter is famous for being the first and only priest from Badger Bay to be named to the College of Cardinals in 1872.
In 1892, Hamm changed it's name to Henderson.  The name Henderson comes from one of the most famous people in all of Badger Bay, Nathaniel Henderson.  Nathaniel Henderson was the first Governor of Badger Bay.  He was nominated in 1881 and stayed there till his death in 1891.  He was born in raised in Hamm and tragically he died here.  In 1891 on a family vaction he drowned in Potter's Lake.  To this day you can still come and visit Nathaniel Henderson's Birthplace.

VILLAGES IN SHEBOYGAN COUNTY
Edens - Just south of Sheboygan is Edens.  A number of farms make up this small town that is nestled in at the junctions of I-90 and E-45.  Edens was founded in 1865 by Tom Edens, an immigrant from Germany built the first farm here amongst the native Indians in the area.  Tom Edens is known for working with the local Indian population to help make the land more fertile and in development of a local trade route.
Population at First Census 1: 843
Milk Springs - IN THE LATE FALL OF 1853, three families--bound by kinship and a desire to move to Badger Bay--put their belongings in wagons and left Sim Nation. In January 1854, they left the area around Devil's Lake and headed west into wild terrain.  Eventually they found an area surrounded by a couple small ponds and a beautiful water spring tucked into a small forested area.  The spring was colder compared to many other springs in the area. THEIR CHOSEN SPOT was only 20 miles from Sheboygan, but was still considered part of the frontier, complete with Indians. In all probability, they found their way by following the road that carried supplies to the army fort at Fredericksburg. The three families were those of Dr. Joseph McKegg Pound and his wife Sarah,  John L. Moss and his wife Indiana (called "Nannie"), and John Lee Wallace and his wife Malvina. The Pounds were newlyweds, but the Wallaces and Mosses already had children. Sarah and Nannie were sisters. John Wallace was a nephew of famed General Robert Wallace.
Mill Pond -   Mill Pond grew into a small village when a local farmer, Billy Bob, opened a small General Store.  He filled a need for the local farmers.  Instead of having to travel many miles to Freemont or further, they could now go to Billy Bob's General Store.  Over the years local workers in the farms started putting up roots around Billy Bob's store.  Soon a church popped up, then a post office.  It wasn't soon after the post office opened that the village incorporated and started its own local governemnt.  Throughout this time Billy Bob's store was a staple of Mill Pond.  Over the years the store grew with the village.  Many years later, long after Billy Bob has passed, the store is still owned by descendants of his and Billy Bob's Emporium has now grown into over seventy stores throughout Sheboygan County.  But it all started out in Mill Pond.
Population at First Census 1: 1,103
Princeton - Princeton was named in honor of John S. Prince, who built a sawmill in Sheboygan in the early 1850's to manufacture lumber from the vast amounts of lumber coming from this area. The village of Princeton was laid out and platted in the winter of 1855 by Samuel Ross, James W. Gillam, Dorilius Morrison, John S. Prince, and Richard Chute. Although the village plat was recorded on April 19, 1856, in Sheboygan County, the village was at first a part of the township and was not separated until March 5, 1877.

Cedar Creek- a small creek that flows out of Devils lake and through the City of Sheboygan.  It is a fairly small creek only about six feet wide at some points.
Devil's Lake - Devils Lake, has some of the absolute greatest duck and goose hunting in the world. This area in Sheboygan County is also well known for its white-tail deer hunting in the fall. But most of all, Devils Lake is known for its fantastic fishing. Try out Devils Lake in the summer for some great walleye and pike fishing. Or better yet, brave the cold and have the time of your life catching those famous Devils Lake Jumbo Perch and whopping walleye while out ice fishing. If you haven't tried Devils Lake yet, you are missing out on some awesome fishing and hunting fun! Try Devils Lake for your next sportsman's trip.
Devil's Lake has two tributaries off of it.  In the northern edge is the small Cedar Creek that winds through SHeboygan County.  While in the south is the Crane River that leads to the Ocean.
Potter's Lake - Potter's Lake is mainly a recreational lake.  Lots of watersking, boating, and tubing.  Fishing is semi-popular on Potter's Lake though you won't find much on the way of large fish.  The most abundant fish are bluegill and sun fish.  Around Potter's Lake you will find a number of summer vaction homes.  Most of the permanant residents are found on the two towns on opposite sides of Potters Lake, Henderson on the north side and Grimes Point on the south side.

Nathaniel Henderson Birthplace - Nathaniel Henderson was the first Governor of Badger's Bay elected in 1881.  He was Governor untill 1991 when he drowned in Potter's Lake.
St. Luke's Catholic Church - St. Lukes was established in 1853 and was the first Catholic church in Sheboygan County.  In 1891, St Luke's burned down in an accidental fire, the ruins are all that remains.

Two lovely updates there.  Like Capo I'm sad that this is the last Henderson update, but I guess it's reached the size you planned - I admire your ability to stop at the right time instead of over developing (like me!).

I like the H5-8 pic in particular.  Eddie Stobart is one of the largest haulage contractors in England so it's nice to see his trailers pop up in Henderson!  And nice football pitch at the school!

Great narrative describing the towns so far, a very nice touch. 

I'll be interested to see what's next in Badger Bay.

GRIMES POINT




Grimes Point is located on the southern edge of Potter's Lake.  It is a fairly small village with a population of only 2,150. It is centered around the intersection of County Trunk A and 23, which intersect in the middle of town.  Grimes Point is names after Sir Walter Grimes, the famous British Explorer that navigated through this area in the late 1600's.  He made his way into this area first through Devil's Lake then traversed the lands with only a few men. He would eventually explore most of Badger Bay, but it was here where Grimes Point is today that he camped in 1705 at the age of 74.  In the middle of the night a large grizzly bear broke into camp and attacked him and his men.  In the ensuing chaos a horse broke loose from the others and took off.  On its way out of camp it hit a shovel that flew up into the air and landed on the fire where a pot of hot water was perched precariously on a makeshift warming rig.  Well the pot flew into the air and landed on the foot of Sir Walter Grimes, who from the immense pain took off running towards the lake that they camped around (which would later be called Potter's Lake) and dipped his foot to cool the burn.  As he walked into the water he slipped on a mossy log, fell backwards and cracked his head open.  He would later die from the blood loss.

Today Grimes Point is a nice little village that doesn't get as much of the tourism bustle as Henderson, but it does get some.  This side of Potter's Lake is a little colder than the north side due to the prevailing winds.  You will still see tourists here, but it is the residents of Grimes Point you will see more often.  If you liked Henderson you will like Grimes Point.  Though not as touristy it is still a great place to see, I hope you will like it.

So my next few updates will revolve around this little town, named after a famous explorer.

GP-3: Towne Bank.  Recently robbed.  Attached is the note that the robber left.  He was caught three hours later.  His name was on the back of the paper, he apparently made the note on a letter addressed to him.

Well you may not know this, but I am an accountant and I actually own a Jackson Hewitt Tax Service.  I have three offices that I own.  So with that said also, come January my updates will be a little more sporadic.  Thats why I am trying to get out more now and build some up for later when I don't have the time to play as much.

Grimes Point Update 1: 'Give me all your money' lol, I'd say you should invest in Grimes Point educational system because that isn't one of the smartest criminals. I'm having serious doubts visiting a dentist with an oral fixation though, oh man you really make me laugh  :D

Another great town you've got there.  I have to congratulate you on the background you always give us for your towns.  It's very well written and gives the reader a nice feel for the place.  And I must admit that Sir Walter Grimes sounds like he could have been an British explorer.

And I can imagine it must have been good when you spotted the Jackson Hewitt offices - it's good to have something connected to you in your cities.

My favourite picture in this update is GP5, very nice nice shot - is that the new night mod I've seen people take about???  And yes, the bank robber's note is a very nice touch.

GP-3  Like the club house for the golf course.  Is that a modular golf course there??

GP-6  The family houses round the school just so suit that area - very nice.  Just wonder how many windows get smashed on the houses that back onto the football pitch!

GP3-1  That's a nice plaza you have there.

GP3-2  I hope that bank robber doesn't strike again!  Like the Wendy's there.

GP3-3  That is a very nice small  business park.  Yeah, really like that.

HELP NEEDED  I could use some advice from the great minds out there.  I made a mosaic in PhotoShop, the problem I have is when I put it on either photobucket or imageshack.  The image comes out like 80 pixels wide compared to the 800 I have saved it at.  Any suggestions for me?

Wow, that is one huge mosaic, tkirch. Nice work, though. Creating a mosaic isn't as easy as it looks. I always end up with a line across the middle of mine so I have to start over again!

Oh mama, that mosiac is something else! That is excellent, excellent work! I loved the rural look of the mosiac with a bit if suburban here and there. You got it down to an artform.

Adell is a nice little unincorporated area just off E-45 spur that leads into Henderson.  It's just a small little area and is only a few blocks in length.  The town is dominated by two churches.  St. Mathias Lutheran and First Methodist.  Both churches are quite busy on Sundays when the local farmers come in and go to church.
Adell is named after Justine Adell, a painter born in this area in the early 1800's.  She is known for her rural artwork which adorns a number of museums around the world.  Her piece piece below was recently purchased for 16,000,000 and given to the Badger Bay National Art Gallery.

Very nice update, tkirch. I love the little villages many of the MDers are able to create. Wish I could achieve that kind of atmosphere in a few of my towns.
What size quad is Adell built on? Just wondering because I'm debating about adding a highway in my region but don't want to do so if it isn't needed.
BTW, the painting is lovely and worth every Simoleon!

That has to be one of the biggest mosaics I've ever seen....I like it!

Adell first picture: I don't know what you did with the colouring in that pic, but it looks awesome. I actually looks like a painting...but Justine Adell had to be in a hot balloon to get such an aerial view to get it like that :) Hey 16 mil may sound much, but when looking at that picture I'd say it was well worth the prize. How noble of the buyer to grant this masterpiece to the museum, where it belongs!

Everything is just right, the cows wandering of, the tractor parked at the road, the fence work and water bowls for the cows..everything perfect. You outdid yourself..

All the other pics have a nice variation of colours and trees, however the town looks a little empty but perhaps that was meant to be like that. The religious people of Adell must be blessed with 2 churches so close together in the centre of this small town :)

jmouse - Joan thank you also.  It took me awhile to figure out the mosaic but it works.  There is a great tutorial on this website for photoshop.  I used some of the ideas and it worked.  As for what size square this is...it is the same large square that has Henderson and Grimes Point.  I only use one size throughout my whole region ... a large square.

NASCAR_Guy Thank you.  And hey what do you think about Jimmie Johnson.  Sure seems his Crew Chief gets caught cheating a lot, not saying anything but just saying.

capo  - Yes it is a huge mosaic but I think to get the full effect of what i am achieving it had to be done.  Glad you like it.  Took me awhile to figure out how to put it on here but it worked out now.  I have to agree the town is a little empty, I figure the population at maybe 80 or so with a lot of visitors coming in from the farming areas or stopping for gas off the freeway.

Love the cabins, tkirch, and especially like the way you've spread them out.  I'd like to book one for the second week in April, please.
Imagine, a whole week of fishing, snorkeling, beach combing, and ... they DO have high-speed broadband connections, don't they? :D

I think, maybe my first visit to Badger Bay, looks quite spectacular and detailed, i just like that photoshop you add in your images, i dont know how you do that but I would like to know  ;D This inspires me in doing farms areas and roads like you did...

jmouse - Of course there's internet access.  Actually Badger Bay is completely wired for wireless internet throughout the whole region.  The first nation in the world to be hard wired everywhere.

Hey tkirch,

You've been busy my friend.  Sorry I've missed a couple fo updates, but caught up now.  Adell is very nice and the painting is a nice touch, you've achieved a really good effect there.

My favourite is the train shot - looks really special.  I have a good friend called Dirk, so the boxcar with Dirk Direct on it made me laugh.  The coast line with cabins, summer house and boat ramp also work very well and is somewhat unusual.

And I love the paroch road sign  $%Grinno$% thanks!  Before you move on to the next square any chance of a region shot so we can how the whole square looks?

I'm intrigued to see what happens in the next square.

Sheboygan County is run by an elected County Supervisors.  The County Supervisors make up the Sheboygan County Board.  There are currently 34 Board Members.  Each supervisor is represents a geographical area of Sheboygan County known as a ward.  Thirteen members represent the City of Sheboygan itself.  The County Board elects one person to be the County Board Chairman.  The Chairman oversees board meetings, gives commitees appointments, and votes in the case of ties. 

Besides the County Board, the voters of Sheboygan County elect a County Administrator.  As the Chief Administrative Officer, they coordinate the administrative and management functions of all County Departments. The County Adminstrator's responsibilities include: Supervision of all non-elected department heads; recommending organizational changes, new programs, ordinances and resolutions; implementing County Board decisions, preparing the annual budget; providing leadership for achieving our mission and vision; periodically updating the County Board on various county programs and initiatives; reviewing requests and complaints from the general public concerning administrative actions; representing the County Board at public functions, inter-governmental meetings and other forums.

Sheboygan County has established below it's own mission statement.
MISSION STATEMENT:
The mission of Sheboygan County is to provide courteous, responsive, efficient, and effective services to those we serve.

The vision of Sheboygan County is to be recognized as a leader of responsive and cost-effective local government.

The guiding principles of Sheboygan County are:

(1) to provide leadership,
(2) to be dedicated to the concept of democratic local government,
(3) to maintain a constructive, objective, and creative attitude,
(4) to maintain a deep sense of social responsibility as a trusted public servant,

IN THE LATE FALL OF 1853, three families--bound by kinship and a desire to move to Badger Bay--put their belongings in wagons and left Sim Nation. In January 1854, they left the area around Devil's Lake and headed west into wild terrain.  Eventually they found an area surrounded by a couple small ponds and a beautiful water spring tucked into a small forested area.  The spring was colder compared to many other springs in the area. 


THEIR CHOSEN SPOT was only 20 miles from Sheboygan, but was still considered part of the frontier, complete with Indians. In all probability, they found their way by following the road that carried supplies to the army fort at Fredericksburg. The three families were those of Dr. Joseph McKegg Pound and his wife Sarah,  John L. Moss and his wife Indiana (called "Nannie"), and John Lee Wallace and his wife Malvina. The Pounds were newlyweds, but the Wallaces and Mosses already had children. Sarah and Nannie were sisters. John Wallace was a nephew of famed General Robert Wallace.

THE MILK HOUSE OPENS, in 1856.  The Milk House was opened around the spring as a place for local farmers and Indians to bring their fresh milk for trade.  The spring with it being so cold was an excellent place to keep the milk in and fresh.  The Milk House soon became a popular trading post.

ON JUNE 5, 1857, JOHN MOSS was appointed the first postmaster. To have a post office, the community needed a name. Nannie Moss officially named it for the spring at the Milk House, a gathering place for the Tonkawa Indians and local farmers.  Milk Springs became a stagecoach stop that ran between Sheboygan and Fredericksburg. The last reported Indian raid occurred in 1872.

WHAT IS NOW THE POUND HOUSE MUSEUM was built by Dr. J.M. Pound in 1852. The Pound family operated the farm for more than 130 years. The home was a hospital and a church before being donated to the city as a museum. Dr. Pound, the earliest doctor in Sheboygan County, served in the War of 1840 and Miner War, and four generations of his family lived in the home. Restoring the home has been an ongoing community project, now in its eighth year.


TODAY, MILK SPRINGS is just a small stop along I-90.  A place to fill up, get some gas and get back on the expressway.  In the early 1980's a tragic explosion rocked the historic MILK HOUSE causing it to collapse into the original spring.  The damage to the spring was so extensive with contaminates and debris that the expense to repair and refurbish is too much at the current time for the town to fix.  At this time they are looking for a philantropist to help with a monetary donation.  The population of Milk Springs is 623 currently and is part of the 15th Ward.

Hey Tkirch,

They are some IMPRESSIVE updates you've posted there.

I adore the region views you provide us with.  Can I ask how you get those photos of the overall region and also of the individual squares?  Are you using a special program to achive that?

And Milk Spring is to die for - a really nice small town feel you've created.  I like the way the large store is at the centre of the town and seems to dominate the community - I like the way you've done that.  And I really like Culver's - the high school I went to was called Culverhouse, so that brings back memories.

Badger Bay is an impressive project - good luck with seeing it through.

Milk Springs is a delight, tkirch, and I'm so glad you showcased it at several zoom levels. The art work and RL photo along with a fascinating history make it all the more special.
Also I like the way you've used appropriate signs and logos to identify the civic and commercial elements.
The overviews look great, but they are a big help, too. I think I see something here that I've wanted to do but didn't have a clear picture of it in my mind. &idea I'll be bookmarking this page for further study.

Beautiful scenery!

In 1890, settlers begin moving in to this area to help work in many of the local farms.  Soon more people that worked in the fields all day begin to settle in roughly the same year.  It was in 1894, when one of these farm workers, Benn Dunkirt, was named the first Postmaster in the area.  He opened a Post Office in the back of his home.  At that time the area was known by it rural postal number, PO728.  So Benn took it as his responsibility to name the area.  Benn was a transplanted Australian and decided to name it after his hometown Sydney.  So without any approval process, Benn started crossing out all PO728 on mail and replacing it with New Sydney.  He also put a sign out in front of his home, NEW SYDNEY POST OFFICE. 
Five years later, New Sydney became incorporated and was chartered under the name Benn Dunkirt originally gave the village.

Today New Sydney is not much bigger than the original area, and is mainly a place for farmers to get some quick things and a place for local farm workers to live near their work.

You've done a fine job on the details, tkirch. The ponds look good, and the buildings fit into the rural landscape very well. The second photo is especially appealing for some reason - maybe it's the red buildings - but it has a nice atmosphere. :thumbsup:

Pioneer is a very small unincorporated area.  This small community sprung up around Joshua Pond.  This very small community is just outside of the Town of Kohler.  Joshua Pond was named after Joshua Stallings.  Joshua Stallings opened the first full plumbing bathroom in the area in his small general store.  People came from the entire yard to see the working restroom.  It is rumored that the Bathroom Stall got the name from Joshua Stallings who advertised Stallings General Store with the Working Bathroom.  Come and try out Stallings Bathroom.  Maybe it was eventually shortened to The Stall.

The year was 1891 and Bill Denbrough put stakes in the ground and claimed this land that ran along both the Potowatomi Game Trail and Stewart Creek.  Over the next few years more people moved in and the area soon expanded.  In 1899, Ralph Roberts, a retired widower who suffered from insomnia helped establish the Village of Derry.  Ralph Roberts and Bill Denbrough both helped get Derry on the road and became true and hard friends. At 29 Neibolt Street they helped establish the first Post Office which establish Derry as a true village.  Derry over the years has the distinction of providing four Miss Badger Bay's with Beverly Marsh becoming one of the most well known.  Beverly Marsh went on after becoming Miss Badger Bay to getting her medical degree from the University Of Badger Bay.  She is one of the world's foremost expert on artificial ligaments.

Derry also has the extinction of being the birth place of the current Badger Bay Vice President, Georgie Denbrough, the great-great grandchild of Bill Denbrough himself.  The Derry Civic Centeri s a recent structure built after the old civic center was destroyed in a 1985 plane crash. It was designed by famed architect (and one-time Derry resident) Ben Hanscom. The 1985 plane crash was due to chemist-turned-anti-abortion-fanatic Ed Deepneau when he flew into the Civic Center on a kamikaze mission, using a small plane armed with C4 explosives. The aim of this mission was not to kill the inhabitants of the Civic Center, but to kill a doctor named Patrick Danville, that he detested.  Thankfully the Civic Center was closed that day to a flood earlier in the day so no one parished besides Ed Deepneau.

Other famous Derry residents, the Tracker Brothers were two older men who owned a trucking depot on Kansas Street during the summer of 1958. Behind their depot is a baseball field that the brothers maintain for the kids to play on. An added bonus for the young boys of Derry is that the Brothers often have nude calendars tacked to the corkboard in their office--directly across from one of the windows.

During the summer of 1957, "Belch" Huggins hits two home runs here; in 1985 (the Brothers have since either died or gone out of business; the depot is closed), Belch would later become one of the most prolific hitters in all of baseball.

The depot was destroyed in the storm in 1985 that flooded the Civic Center.

D8 - The Standpipe is a large watertower in Derry, built to house the town's drinking water (it had a seven hundred thousand gallon capacity). In its earlier days it remained unlocked so that patrons of the adjoining park could climb a staircase (which spiraled around the actual tank) to look out over Derry from the top. The door was locked after several people drowned in the tank.

I just wanted to let everyone know that I haven't abandoned this yet, but with the holidays and getting ready for the upcoming tax season I have been extremely busy.  WHEW have I ever.  Plus this time is always a lot of stress.  Here I am up at 1am because I can't sleep because of stress.  Hate this.  So just bear with me please for a bit more, will get an update soon, having pictures just need to get them ready when I get the chance.

And don't worry bout the next update, it'll be ready when it's ready, and your loyal followers (including me) will be here waiting.  RL stress is a downer, we all have it from time to time, so keep smiling and you'll get through it.  I have to admit, I find SC4 a great way to de-stress - whether playing, reading on here, or preparing an update.  It just takes my mind off all the RL rubbish!!!  And, I also find it a good way to sleep.... instead of worrying about work problems in bed, I think about one of my sities and picture the different roads, and what can go where, and before I know it- BANG, I'm asleep /wrrd%&

Well its been awhile.  Welcome to Kohler, Badger Bay.  Kohler has a very unique history and it has nothing to do with toilets as some may think...

Kohler was first settled in the early 1820's by three fur trading friends: John Lerner, Michael Kohls, and Thomas Ohlone.  They were quite good at what they did and soon developed one of the biggest fur trading business in the area.  They found an area between the crook of two rivers that provided them access to many different areas to deliver their goods up to twenty miles away.  In 1829, the three combined their names to come up with Kohler for the name of their company.  Over the years the company grew, but the three of them had no heirs o after the last of the three died in 1841 from dysentery the company folded but the developmet around it still flourished.  Today Kohler is a small community with deep family roots throughout.  You will find many families throughout Kohler that have can be traced all the way back to formal founding of Kohler in 1836, the year John Lerner and Michael Kohls died tragically in the local stream.  No one knows the exact cause but both were found naked and huddled together on the banks.  Many thought this explained why none ever had any heirs, but who are we to judge.  They gave Badger Bay another great nugget of history.

Great update, tkirch. I love small farming communities like this.
I especially like K3 with all the elements of small-town USA. You probably couldn't buy computer hardware in a town like Kohler, but if you stopped in, you'd find down-home folks who would treat you with respect and invite you to the church social right after Sunday evening services.
There aren't enough Kohlers in the world.

It's funny, as I was looking through the Kohler updates, I was thinking "he is the king of the Small Town America look".  You achieve it so well.  I was going to say effortlessly, but I know that it doesn't happen by accident!

But then I thought that one of your other big supporters must be the queen of the Small Town America look.  There's something about Kohler that makes me think of Wildcat Junction, and yet when I look at it again, it's also so different. 

I'm not making much sense here, but needless to say it's a compliment to you both!

As for some specific comments.....

K1 - nice overview with some BIG farms (which I think adds more realism)

K4 - Love the crossroads.  I'd imagine this is the heart of Kohler, where you stop to swap gossip!

K6 - Is the 2x2 market a custom lot you created?  Don't recall seeing that anywhere before??

K7 - Sobchak Lanes looks really RIGHT just there.

K10 - Glad to see the youngsters have a "proper" football pitch ;)

K16 - A nice place to live.

I like the layout for KOHLER, a lot of detail for such a small community. Your pictures really capture the small town atmosphere. You also have a great variety of content there as well. Very pleasing region.
