for instance i want to build an underpass under a highway, or use the lots to build a straight edge coast line...moest of the time the arrows point the other way than i need so i can't use it, it helps if i place the identical lot next to it, changes direction (as to how i have to pull the road through it)...but is there any other way???

You mean you can't rotate the lot? Try pressing Home and End. It should help.
