ICHIGAMIN IS THE ANSWER...

The question I asked myself was; "What if the Swedish Empire continued to explore and colonize North America?"

This MD will be a recount of historical fiction. A bloodline that can be traced back to Erik Magnusson, the second son of Magnus Ladulås and Queen consort Helvig of Holstein. Although the story is completely fictional, it will be based on historical accuracy. I hope you enjoy your time spent here.

What do you do when you want to make a region on a coastline but your skills are somewhat sketchy when it comes to terraforming? You take a lesson from Dustin's Commonwealth of Marathon: (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=6190.msg196718#msg196718)
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi119.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fo134%2Fthundercrack83%2FMARATHON%2FUpdate%25201%2F1014.jpg&hash=47588df224a2c186dc4cbfbaa9ee672ccddfe1b3)
Picture From: Commonwealth of Marathon

Combine it with the planning skills of Don's Ashtabula: (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=7257.msg230593#msg230593)
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg8.imageshack.us%2Fimg8%2F2981%2Fashtabula.jpg&hash=958d9b79dd430731048b54728fffa9ae1d4bcee6)
Picture From: Ashtabula

And hopefully, if all goes according to planned, it will allow you to create the new region you want to work on.

THE PEOPLE OF ICHIGAMIN WELCOME YOU!!!

Alright, I guess the people of the region have not immigrated here yet but we will get to that in time. Here is what the development of the region looks like so far.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg6.imageshack.us%2Fimg6%2F9784%2F12ichigamintileview.jpg&hash=fe5b74eeee74652986bd76adbbc700cad12a66c1)
You can start to see the major roads and side streets taking shape on the raised terraformed pieces.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg19.imageshack.us%2Fimg19%2F7600%2F13ichigamintileview.jpg&hash=9a080d69f48a497cb7ba3d537ab8ef6770795797)
You may be wondering how this is going to all play out so let me skip ahead a couple of steps (making sure I remember not to save on exit) and show you what the final product will somewhat look like.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg9.imageshack.us%2Fimg9%2F6361%2F14ichigamintileview.jpg&hash=7b352118474f44cf5d67e4c12e28f278a6f057b1)

What I have done is just lowered the entire city tile by one in the god mode. Once I have the entire city tile laid out I will add the transportation and finish smoothing the tile out so that I do not have those "pods" everywhere. Just in case something goes wrong at least I have Don's planning method as backup.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg9.imageshack.us%2Fimg9%2F5166%2F16ichigamintileview.jpg&hash=2760cc79dd864e7a679239dbbae8f479fd21746d)
Hope you have enjoyed your visit so far even though we are just in the development phase, hope that a lot of excitement is yet to come. Please feel free to respond with your questions, concerns and words of praises. The best thing about an MD is the learning process both by the creator and the viewer.

Great terraforming!  &apls ... (wish I had the patience for that...)
I really can't get over your canal system!
Can't wait until you start building the area...

Awaiting more,

I think that will be really nice to read this!If im right, you will first build up the streets and aves, and after, you will raise the terrain to build the houses, stores and etc ?

Hello, projectadam!

Well, Ichigamin is off to an absolutely wonderful start! You have me hooked with how you're planning things thus far, and I can't wait to see where you are headed--I think I'll be picking up a few tricks!

Good luck!

Dustin

Interesting way to start, you've obviously put a lot of thought into city planning. I hope you'll make a map of the roads and streets in future updates :)

Wow, naming that many streets must have taken you a looooong time. Kudos to you my friend. I'm very curious to see what you have in mind here. As antimonycat mentioned above I would be curious to see this laid out in map form at some point.

Great start. I'll check in to see how you proceed.

Out of interest, will you be creating lots of commercial by the canals, maybe like a type of mall?

Thanks to everyone that has taken the time to read my MD up to this point. I hope that I will capture your interest enough to have you keep coming back and wanting more.

adroman (Adrian): I am hoping that I have the patience for this too ;D Thanks for stopping by and hope to see you back (maybe even before building starts).

peter007: Sorry that the text did not come off so well in my picture, I will have plenty of close ups that the streets will be quite a bit easier to read.

Luke09: You have guessed correctly on how I am going to develop the region. I am still debating whether to raise everything up to the roads right now or to develop the region on the low parts (even though this would mean all of the initial raised terraforming was a waste of time). Once the tile is fully terraformed I am going to play around with the coastal/canal development and see which way looks better.

thundercrack83 (Dustin): Always a pleasure to have one of the great MDers stop by for some words of encouragement. I have learned so much from following CoM that hopefully I can return the favor.

Battlecat: Slowly but surely I am making progress, thanks for stopping by and hope to see you around.

Tomas Neto: I will not have too much development for a while so grab a good book or a couple and hope to see you back once everything really starts taking off.

antimonycat: I hope to have several different informational pamphlets created for the city in due time: transportation maps, maps, newspapers, breaking news stories, etc...

calibanX (Geoff): Everything of this project seems to be taking a VERY LONG time :D Oh well, I do not have that many hobbies so hopefully I can make steady progress in building this region.

Strategist101 (Richard): Thanks for the words of praise. The canals of this area I am visualizing more industry and utility. This will probably most likely be the edge of the downtown area so as I work a little ways up the water, the big commercial lots will come into play.

Simpson (David): Thanks for the welcome back and it is good to be back. Since I have been gone for a while, I thought that I should come back with a bang and here it is.

I have completed one of the corners of the city tile (for development of course) and thought that I would leave a little teaser of the transportation view.

Ok, seeing as you're going to use them for industrial lots...I think commercial would also be nice to develop next to the water, and then you could maybe implement the new CAN-AM system for your residents? Make your city like a sort of water based transport?

Nice teaser there :)

The first week is in the bag, I almost have an entire tile completed, and when I say completed, I mean I have the terraforming and transportation laid out. Not a lot to say or that is really interesting (more just tedious work right now). Therefore, I will just update you on how the progress is coming along. Play a couple of hours and get to a stopping point.

Thanks for those that are hanging in there and sticking around. More in awhile but first...

Luke09: Some major transportation systems are going to be saved until the actual development and much of what you can see from the last update will be filled up by those. In this update, a spot for a university has been reserved. I am not familiar with Ichigo, is that a specific name or just a similar sound.

Strategist01: I promise if you stick around there will be plenty of that stunning waterside commercial that cities are known for. I actually started developing this before the new NAM with the CAN-AM came out. If I would have waited I would have probably have skipped this terraforming and just placed in the canals. In addition, I love the avatar.

Well, I was hoping to be finished with all of the terrain leveling by tonight but I did not quite get it all wrapped up. The last week I have been very busy creating and publishing my first website. I am very excited how it turned out and consider it a great accomplishment since I have only ever worked with HTML coding and I learned and added some PHP and JavaScript.

Anyways, let us check out some of the pictures of the city tile and WHOA, did anyone see that much water coming? Maybe you did  ;)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg24.imageshack.us%2Fimg24%2F76%2F41ichigamintrafficview.jpg&hash=51193ddc3a188e7ac1c996727e615c81f06398a0)

Here is a series of four pictures that follow the edge of the coast. You probably notice some spots opening up for ports and there is going to be some great recreational parks and some heavy utilities in the area.

Finally, a picture from the coast looking inland.

Thanks for stopping by and following along with some boring work but just around the corner we will start developing the region and the real fun will start to happen

Well, we are starting to put the final touches on the terraforming and transportation is starting to be placed in its final spots. I am just going to provide some little teasers on what is happening. Let us backtrack a little bit and examine a question that Luke09 posted after the second update.

"...On that big square in the center of the city, maybe a park there?..."

I believe that Luke09 was referring to this square:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg23.imageshack.us%2Fimg23%2F7373%2F51ichigamintrafficview.jpg&hash=ffcea4cb28a40185f2fd635fb7ae61938711a0ce)

Here is the before image:

and the after, a major intersection for the Ichigamin Motorway 43/94:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg24.imageshack.us%2Fimg24%2F1213%2F53ichigaminintersection.jpg&hash=53cfafbdd840db6a55a5e693c7d3cd3747b766ee)

Finally a look at the progress being made with a look at the traffic view:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg23.imageshack.us%2Fimg23%2F7003%2F54ichigamintrafficview.jpg&hash=4777812247ac758796b6bfc97d617ceff983e11e)

REPLIES:

Strategist01: I think this is the island you are talking about:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg43.imageshack.us%2Fimg43%2F5926%2F55ichigaminmidnortheast.jpg&hash=21be893352223ecce99c569c5e8d6fa730574079)

It is going to serve as just a little breakwater for what I have in mind for placing on the coast. As always, thanks for stopping by.

dizflip: Thanks for stopping by and I wanted to also compliment you on how great the Republic of Jiesan is looking. I love the emblem and might be sending some PMs your way to have you help me with mine.

Luke09: Thanks for the compliments. I believe the water mod I am using is dogfight's water mods and the specific one is muddy lake. It can be found here: http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=19058
In addition, the website can be found at www.bullocklongfuneralhome.com. As the name implies it is for a funeral home that is located back in my hometown.

Well judging from the picture below, this can mean only one thing...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg40.imageshack.us%2Fimg40%2F4609%2F61ichigamintrafficview.jpg&hash=481e3977b0c54676c8646f2eae9926b7690f153d)
THE TERRAFORMING FOR THIS TILE IS COMPLETE!!! Wow, I did not have any idea that this would take so long when I started. I think this project will be around for about the rest of my life. Since I have only placed a couple of rail and water related buildings I think I will save those pictures until the area is developed a little more.

What I do have for right now is a look at the three major interchanges located in this city tile (thanks for reminding me of the word Battlecat. I came across a brain hiccup and could not think of the right word, intersection was the only thing that could come to mind). We have already looked at the off/on ramps for the IM (Ichigamin Motorway) 43/94 but here it is again just to refresh your memories.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg40.imageshack.us%2Fimg40%2F3733%2F62ichigamininterchange.jpg&hash=2228aa964154d249b920cc4123ea1bf1ceca61c9)

This intersection splits IM 43/94. IM 43 continues to run toward the top side of the picture, IM 94 continues to run toward the left side of the picture, IM 794 is a new road designation which is used for the stretch that continues to run toward the right side of the picture, and the IM 43/94 off/on ramps that was featured in the last picture is located approximately 75 game squares further down from the bottom of this picture.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg14.imageshack.us%2Fimg14%2F1325%2F63ichigamininterchange.jpg&hash=4bb6ca7ac17d5d916650482bc6f395f57db89dc3)

The last interchange we are going to examine at this time is the IM 794. This picture is rotated 90 degrees so the interchange that we looked at in the previous picture is approximately 100 game squares past the top of this picture. IM 794 comes from the top and follows the coast to the left side of this picture and shares off/on ramps with a Memorial Drive, which will be named later.

Finally, what would one of my updates be without the traffic view with the transportation options highlighted?

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg39.imageshack.us%2Fimg39%2F2562%2F65ichigamintrafficview.jpg&hash=5b9d1f17094d05529fe8a394adbe8568bac82ef4)

I do not know what the next step is going to be. The fun part would be to start building this city tile but I do not know if I should terraform the surrounding tiles first so that the city connections will be working before growth takes place. I also would like to take suggestions on a couple of things, I would like to get recommendations on what you think are some of the best:
road top bus stations
waterfront lots (I need to address the slopes of my canals)

Like I said, I do not know what is next for my region but I do know that the next thing in my post is:

REPLIES:

djvandrake: Thanks for stopping by, hopefully I have kept your interest at a point that you will be stopping by again.

Luke09: Thanks for the compliments on the road and I promise I will not disappoint by putting in some amazing parks (maybe one of them will even be named Luke Park).

Battlecat: As I mentioned in the post, thanks for the word I was looking for. I hope that the preplanning will make things easier in the long run, using the carpenter model "measure twice, cut once."

Nexis4Jersey: Glad that you followed me here from my previous MD Elizabeth County, which ended sooner than I was hoping to end it. Crossing my fingers that this one is around for the long haul.

Strategist01: I need to play around with the breakwaters a little bit but hopefully it will turn out the way I envision. Thanks for stopping by and the compliments on the interchange.

yeah, you might want to terra form the tiles around it, but I think that maybe give those a more naturalistic feel to make that the city centre, and the rest around it slightly less built up. Maybe the eight tiles around it, could be terraformed in this way, but then everything else would just have a go with the flow sort of feel to it? Just a suggestion :)

nice update there my friend, and well done on the terraforming  &apls

Greetings all, just doing a quick midweek update. Terraforming has started on the second tile, located north of the first one. It is coming along slowly but surely, here is the current progress on the tile.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg3.imageshack.us%2Fimg3%2F4964%2F71ichigamintrafficview.jpg&hash=0a41270ce401fea1bc0a83b1159960da31c5df56)

I had a good idea of what the back-story of the region was going to be but I continue to do research and improve the storyline. I am hoping that I will be posting the history of the region but wanted to hold off for a major update and also for some development to take place. In the meantime, I still am looking for some recommendations on road top bus stations, waterfront lots/walls and if anyone has any good readings on ancient town development around castles. Thanks for hanging in there and now time for some...

REPLIES:

Strategist01: Thanks for the words of encouragement and I agree. I am going to hold off on the satisfaction of development and continue with the terraforming.

Splime: Interchanges are hard to do. We still need some more puzzle pieces to make them look fantastic but I get a lot of inspiration from looking at interchanges in MapQuest and Google Earth and that usually tends to help a lot.

Luke09: No procrastination on the SC4 front, maybe a little in RL though $%Grinno$%

Driftmaster07: Thanks for stopping by and hope to see you around.

Oooooooooooo, we are getting close to actually doing some development in the region. The second tile's network is almost completely laid out and now I just need to level out the surface and it will be completed on the terraforming front. I actually finished it a couple of days ago and I was hoping that I would have two tiles to display but I still have about 150 tiles of coastline to create on my third tile. With any luck and no major setbacks, I believe we will have development start around 08/16/09. A little bit of housekeeping, I have not had anyone recommend:
Waterfront/walls

Here are a couple of pictures to document the progress on the second tile.

And of course, the signature traffic view of the city tile.

Thanks for stopping by and as I said, with any luck things should get a little more exciting when development hits this week! I am hoping that the release of the new Madden does not slow down my SC4 playing time too much :D Until the next time, how about some...

Have you tried Marrast's seawalls? I'm not sure what kind of feel you want for the city, so it's difficult to suggest certain lots. There's a wonderful collection of waterfront lots, including some buildings, in the "WFK" section of the LEX. You should definitely take a look there, if you haven't already: http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/fr_main.htm

Good luck! :)

Chapter I

Important Characters:
Charles X Gustav, King of the Swedish Empire from (1654 - 1660)
Gudbrand Magnus "God's Sword"
Nils Magnus "Victor of the People"

Act I: Faithful General
We catch up with our hero Gudbrand, who has just been called to meet with the King of the Swedish Empire, Charles X Gustav. The year is 1659...

Charles X Gustav: "I have been keeping a close eye on you most faithful Gudbrand. You have learned a great deal about life and war, from your earlier days as just a page to King Gustavus Adolphus, to your later teen years under Lennart Torstenson. You also fought very skilled and ambitiously at Riga."

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg3.imageshack.us%2Fimg3%2F6031%2Fbattleofriga.jpg&hash=97816fb14bafdef0fee9ff5a0968ebcab86ee6d0)
Battle of Riga(1)

Gudbrand: "Thank you Majesty."

Charles X Gustav: "You have also learned a great deal about people serving as Lord High Constable and have demonstrated excellent leadership ability. The reason I have called you is that we have lost our standing in the New World. I want you to lead a group and explore the Americas."

Gudbrand: "Yes Majesty."

Charles X Gustav: "You have been a most Faithful General. Prepare for your leave."

Act II: He ain't Heavy, He's My Brother
Gudbrand is preparing his men and supplies while discussing the future with his younger brother, Nils.

Nils: "If you believe that I am going to stay behind in the shadows of Gabriel De la Gardie, while you are off creating history, I guess I do not even know my own brother."

Gudbrand chuckles: "Nils, I know that you are the wisest man in the world when it comes to domestic and foreign affairs. If Gabriel De la Gardie was not the King's brother-in-law, we both know who would be the most trusted advisor. Besides, you have an excellent diplomatic relationship with the French and we will need to rely on their help if we want anyone to remember us in history."

Nils: "Oh, so I see how it is. I am only invited because YOU get something out of it."

Gudbrand wraps his arm around his brother and smiles: "Of course that is the reason Nils, plus you will be good company."

Act III: Journey to the Unknown
The Docks, summer of 1659

Gudbrand: "Brother, if you have any doubts, now is the time to speak up."

Nils: "I believe the time to speak up would have been several weeks ago. No doubts, I have lived for this day!"

Gudbrand's Ships Sailing to Sea(2)

Gudbrand and Nils would sail and land in the New World. With an already great relationship with the French, Nils would come across the stories and travels of Étienne Brûlé. This would lead our heroes to establish a fort and trading post in current day Michigan.

REPLIES:

First, I hope you have enjoyed a slight change of pace from the design aspect of the game. I would also like to draw your attention to the first post, which now includes a proper introduction. Before I get to the replies am I forgetting anything... Oh yeah, THANKS FOR OVER 1,000 PAGE VIEWS!

Driftmaster: Thanks for the compliments and for stopping by.

Jason (Albus of Garaway): Yeah, I started thinking that just asking for seawalls without giving any idea of how they might be used leaves the door wide open. I have done several searches on the LEX but for some reason never recall seeing Marrast's seawalls until you called my attention to them. They will look great in certain areas of my region and I also stumbled across a lot of Marrast's stuff on the STEX which I think will make an excellent contribution to my region (but the dependencies and files are a little harder to figure out but I will work it out). Thanks for the excellent recommendation and hope you drop by again.

djvandrake: Thanks for stopping by and I hope that the development of my marina will inspire you in the creations of yours.

Luke09: Thanks for the recommendations and all three creators you listed are now found in my plugin folder.

citycapitalizer: Thanks for the compliments on the transportation network and you are correct, it takes a long time. I am applying the rules of carpentry "measure twice, cut once" and hoping that the extra time upfront will pay off in the end.

Once again, I would like to thank those that have left their comments and the readers that have put Ichigamin over the 1000 mark. Hope to see you all back here soon :)

Welcome back to Ichigamin. Sorry it has taken me a little longer to get a reply out than I was expecting, development in the game has slowed a little bit but I wanted to let everyone to know that I am still plugging away on the region and you can call off the search party.

One reason that things have slowed down is that I am accepting a new job and this means relocation back to the state I grew up. Our (my wife and I) families still live back in Nebraska so it will be nice being 4 hours away from my family and home (opposed to 13 hours currently) and just an hour drive to the In-Laws. The big start date is on the 8th so I am doing some minor packing and just trying to tie up as much as I can here before I take off. Unfortunately this means my wife and I are going to be apart for a little bit until I get established in the new city but I plan on staying cheered up by spending time with my SC4Devotion family (and I am guessing a ton of free night minutes on the cell phone with my wife).

Anyways though, how about we take a look at a couple of teaser screenshots of what is in store about 20 years from where we last left off in the story.

The storyline is always going to follow chronological order (I think) but to keep things interesting, I will display pictures from anytime during the founding of Ichigamin to what it looks like present day. I am one tile development away to starting some work on the Ichigamin International Airport, which I think should make for some great pictures. Until then,

REPLIES:

Geoff (calibanx): Thanks for stopping by and for the words of encouragement. It is not full-blown city building yet but hope that you do not have to wait too much longer.

shaylan221: There is a couple of roads in this update but not too many. Thanks for making one of your first couple of posts here at Ichigamin.

Luke09: We are getting there, thanks for sticking in there since the beginning.

Driftmaster07: A couple of buildings have been spotted.

djvandrake: Coming across your reply, I am thinking that popcorn sounds like a good late night snack right about now.

Battlecat: Glad you liked the change in pace with some of the historical story side being explored last update. Thanks for coming by and for this being a "huge terraforming project", everyone is just seeing the tip of the iceberg.

Tomas Neto: Thanks for taking the time away from being in the OSITM to visit Ichigamin. For those of you who have not had a chance to visit Vale Paulista yet, DO SO NOW! It is okay, Ichigamin will still be here and if you are lucky, djvandrake and I will save you some popcorn ;)

Dave (tooheys): Thanks for stopping by and I wish you luck on the start of your new region Clontarf. I can say the same about your MD in that I am excited to seeing the upcoming development.

Greetings again from Ichigamin. I keep plugging away a little here and a little there as I gear up for moving day. Just two pictures I took after my game session to let you know Ichigamin is still moving forward. I almost have two more tiles completely terraformed, one tile is about 80% and the other is around 40%.

The 40% tile is going to be the main tile for the Ichigamin International Airport. If you are following another thread of mine, you will learn it is based off Heathrow International Airport in London. Oh yeah, you might have noticed that I said that it will be the main tile the airport is on. In RL, airports are HUGE. That means I am going to have to use a little bit from two tiles around it to make the entire airport.

Anyways, all that is hopefully to come in time. Here are the two pictures I took tonight. The first one is the traffic view of the tile that is almost completed and the second picture is a regional shot.

Ok, just dropped by, sorry for not replying for awhile, my bad!

Very nice work on the whole regional area! Can't wait to see more!

Anyway, you said you wanted some roadtop bus sets? Try the ones by Uroncha:

A set of bus stops for all road networks except highways, with diagonals, and a set of double bus and subways. (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=14010)

A set for the dirt roads of the SAM, for the early stages of you city (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=20711)
