Title: AK's Custom Content Showcase
Post by: Alek King of SC4 on January 24, 2007, 06:54:51 AM
"Joins the mass migration of cj's over to SC4D to avoid massive server drag"

-Now with typing-

Alrighty then many of you are familiar with my current region if not here are trans maps (http://img223.imageshack.us/my.php?image=test11696104549kg.png) and region shots (http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/5489/test11696104356jy.png) of the currently developed areas.

As you can see the downtown is quite oversized at the moment, as is about as large as it will get.  I developed this large cbd early on a large tile surrounded by small and med. tiles, which would supply the commuters, this allowed me to maximize the rail and highway traffic coming into the cbd.

As for the sprawl this is an american style city, so i figure that a city of (now about 1 million) should have sprawl going out at least 30 miles or so.  So by that i have much more to add.  however as i progress further from the cbd the sprawl will become less griddy and more meandering and wasteful of space.

Anyways some relatively new pics of the downtown.
This first pic shows the downtown looking south, you can see a rail and L line coming in from the east (each connects to a different neighboring residential tile) and an L line and the big dig coming in from the south.  You can also barely make out two L lines exiting to the west (towards the port).

Something else i have been trying to do is to have no commercial tower repeats. Obviously i have not gotten there yet, and still need about 10-12 more mid to large towers before i can really say that the whole skyline has no commercial duplicates.

Please Look Here (http://img250.imageshack.us/my.php?image=aa0qf.jpg)

This next picture shows a little closer into downtown, in the middle of the two major rail/L Hubs in the city center, both handle over 100,000 commuters and are vital to the area.  In this park of the city i have also tried to mix in more green space as i have been told my cities are too "grey"  ;)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg223.imageshack.us%2Fimg223%2F8972%2Fagsd4rs.jpg&hash=a15d33eedbfa99f57a51faafee05f09189a68829)

This is the same area just a little further north, showing the north station and the surrounding residential neighborhoods.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg407.imageshack.us%2Fimg407%2F2822%2Fasda0qr.jpg&hash=d13cab85a3888358a2625d7dd254372077068c7c)

here is a cool closeup showing some realistic residential developements (i would name them appropriate things like "Artist Point Condos, or Park Place Apartments if i was more creative  :P
You can find my tutorials here at SC4D on how to grow what residential where you want when you want.  I have also realized my L train skin is hard to see.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg250.imageshack.us%2Fimg250%2F5540%2Fasdas0yg.jpg&hash=7db3bf9767ac3830ab8879792663445bde29a6d8)

This next pic is a zoomed out shot of the whole north end of the city, lots of residential neighborhoods and two rail lines from the north, one from the east, one for the west and big dig coming in from the east as well.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg250.imageshack.us%2Fimg250%2F760%2Fasfsdgs6pl.jpg&hash=474e43b3b1b52d14046c75f44589388a34dadfa1)

This is a closeup of an Urban mixed zoning neighborhood on the cities near west side, all residentials are grown, also noticed super long, super hard to see train (note to self dl new L skin)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg250.imageshack.us%2Fimg250%2F3368%2Fdsds8tn.jpg&hash=9f82f378d0aa7fe0216f7283fe71397075270e21)

And a Summary Pic

A tour of the cities residential neighborhoods.

North Side:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg104.imageshack.us%2Fimg104%2F976%2Fnorthsidess9bt.jpg&hash=634b12600eaeabf1d287d22c93a1aa60aa00d1dc)

Light Green: Stenton Park:  A small urban yuppy enclave in the heart of South downtown a popular area with the dink crowd (dual income no kids) this area is extremely trendy, extremely high demand and incredibly expensive. tucked into downtown near the canal, location is everythig and the prices reflect it.  Typical one bedroom rents range from $2000 to well upwards of $5000.  Many of the cities wealthiest live here.

Light blue:  Emerald Park: a masterplanned housing development on the cities north west
side.  This area benefits from close proximity to major transportation lines (expressway
and rail) but is also just north of Emerald Park, the cities largest public park and a highly
popular area.  However this popularity carries an element of undesirables and can be dangerous
in spots.  This is not an area reccomended for families, and is much better suited for
young first time buyers, college students, ect.  Typical rents on a 1br range from $600 to about $1000.

Darker Green:  Hanburg Park:  An older northside neighborhod populated largely by European
Immigrants back in the day is now home to many of the cities Latin American immigrants.  Colorful apartments and row homes are common, as well as small shops.  This area also benfits from it proximity to public transportation. typical 1br rents can range from around $500 to upwards of $1000, though the are is known for being largley affordable.

Violet:  Kenwood park: A bustling highly residential neighborhood known for good schools and
and safe streets.  The area is served by a large rail station and is very commuter friendly.
However in recent years the areas desirability has begun to drive prices up somthing long
term residents take issue with.  typicall 1br rents can still be found around $7-800, but
new constructions, rehabs, and many remodled units are now going for well over $1500.

Dark Blue:  The Upper East Side. A high and mid rise residential community bordering
the cities far north east side.  This area is known as the most affordable for those looking
to experience highrise city living on a relatively modest budget.  Apartments on the west
side go for around $1200-1500 for a 1br, while those in midrises to the east go for $800-$1100.

Teal: Maywood Park:  A Small quiet residential community on the cities near east side, the best
word to describe this area is sleepy, home to many of the cities elderly residents, and families
this is an area of quiet tree lined streets and very limited commercial development.  Typical
1br rents range from $700-$1000 and are considered reasonable, they are kept down by low
demand as many of the cities youth see it as a boring place to live.

Red: Portage Homes: An old urban housing development that should have been demolished
long ago.  This east side hood is a home to many of the areas poorest, many of whom
work at the docks or in factories in the neighboring tile.  This is known as bad area for
surbanites who have come to the city to get lost, as it's in close proximity to nicer areas
typical 1br rents range from $450-650, this is also home many of the cities homeless who
wander into the cbd during th day to panhandle.

Grey:  Burton Park:  A lively east side neigborhood benefiting from an influx of culutures
and close proximity to downtown and the canal from shopping district.  This is a lively area
filled with many bars, clubs and restraunts, popular with the young crowd and increasingly expensive typical 1br rents range from $800 and way up from there.

South Side:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg104.imageshack.us%2Fimg104%2F6201%2Fsouthsidehoods9mq.png&hash=c655e6079229f29447dd97e0998462a430d5ab41)

Green: South Point: A wealthy urban area of mega-tower condos and apartments,
a few companies have their corporate offices located here, but the area has
maintained it's largely residential feel.  The area is also borderd by a small forest
forest park to the north bordering less dsirable neighborhoods. Residents also benefit
from close proximity, both I290 heading south and the Metro South Shoe line. A typical
1-bedroom in this area rents for upwards of $2,000. And north facing units can run
well over $3,000.

Blue:  Crown Park: Located on the cities near southeast this is a long neglected community
finally starting to see some nicer developement on it's west side near the expressway as
well as some commercial development along it's southern portions near the near the Metro
South Port branch.  In past years the canal has been less than clean do to heavy port traffic
to the east (see region map),it was also not uncommon to find bodies and other refuse being
dumped by criminal elements from the surrounding neighborhood.  But do to recent improvments large freigh ships no longer pass through this canal and the water quality is improving. Rents for a typical 1-bedroom can range from $400 for a really sketchy unit to around $1000 for a new construction unit to the south and west.

Grey: Aleksander Park:  A once extremely depressed area, Mayor aleksander exercised
his supreme mayoral power and had the entire area demolished, he then built a big dig tunnel
to conntect to downtown and constructed 11 highrise condos and apartments in the area.  THe move angered some long time residents who feel the mayor is trying to push the cities poor out further and further from the city.  Caving into pressure the Mayor agreed for a portion
of the new housing to be allocated for low wealth families, and added plenty of urban park and
green space.  Typical rents for a 1 bedroom range from the the upper $700 range for low income units, to near 2,000 for high nd north facing units.

Yellow: Brighton Point:  An old fishing port converted into a marina, however this area has
been hard hit by an influence of gang and drug activity.  While  nearby areas have seen staggering developement this area has retained a very old feel to it, something residents say they would like to keep. The areas prime location and proximity to urban rail make it a priority candidate for future development. Typical 1-bedroom rents can still be found down around $600 up to over $1,000.

Excellent CBD. Very dense. A nice mix of uses as well. I like how you've delineated the neighbourhoods, you don't see that often in CJs. I love your transportation networks. You've got all the different types going on nicely.

My only beef is that all of your buildings are either grey, or blue, or some combination there of. haha :D

Glad to see your CJ-ing skills projected here AK.
I lurked a lot at ST in your CJ, forgive me for that.

Great description of the neighbourhoods, it makes the city so lively!
Great also how you managed the traffic in the CBD. Almost no cars (green lines) or is it just me?
Wonder how all those R$$$ get to work.

Now about that L-rail train. light green and light blue indede do not stick out. Try maybe red?

Nik-Nik
Title: Re: AK's Custom Content Showcase
Post by: Alek King of SC4 on January 25, 2007, 08:11:13 AM
thanks for the nice reply nik-nik, the reason you don't see green lines for cars, is because your are seeing the
trans paths after I querried both rail/L stations, the only cars involved would be on the other end where the commuters live.  The highway however does have over 20,000 cars and busses. And the R$$$ population is still only maybe 1/6 at most of the total population.  Despite being largely commercial this tile has around 269,000 sims
and yeah i am going to switch that train skin, if only i could remember what it was called  #?¿?¿?$

on an off hand note does anyone know how to go about raising the capacity of rail stations drastically, it seems like
all of mine including my huge ones are running at 200-300% of capacity or worse.  if there is an easy way to tweak the capacity  it would be great.

thanks chicago, and lets talk some Bears, I for one like that they are the underdogs, this team seems to play best when they have a chip on their shoulder, I am so excited and it is still over a week away.  I already took off work the monday after to regain my strength.  ?=mad)= ¬sck# ?=mad)=

I think i want to go with Ardecila's, I wish i could get traffic on my L over road pieces to use his station but for some reason i can build the network and it looks great but no one will pass through  :discuss:

oh yeah and for those that haven't seen it, the entire region, note development very old, and easy to see the changes.

I used to love following the Bears too. That was back in the old days when the (https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.chicagobears.com%2Fuploads%2Fphotos%2Fperm%2Fmain%2FBECEIMLJPIEK%2FFridge_inside062304.jpg&hash=3268eadcc4a3f15214a210231314e7744112d5e3) was playing.

But I haven't followed them since. Pity I guess that Football is not well covered on dutch television and one way or the other you forget about things like this.

'Da Bears! [linkie] (http://www.bearshistory.com/seasons/1991chicagobears.aspx)

I grew up in the Chicago area in the George Halas/Dick Butkus/Brian Piccolo/Gale Sayers days [linkie] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_Bears).  They didn't move into Soldier Field [linkie] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soldier_Field) until after I left the area to attend college.  It's great that they're in the Superbowl [linkie] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Bowl)- only winning the whole thing every twenty years or so leaves some pretty long dry spells.

Heh, Nik-nik- so you're a fan of the 'Fridge, eh?  Man, he was a monster [linkie] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Perry_%28American_football%29).  He had nothing on Dick Butkus [linkie] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Butkus), though, of whom I recall it was remarked, "He wasn't just trying to tackle you- he was trying to kill you."

Alek, sorry to hijack things, but thanks for the memories.  That's a great region shot, btw.  You are one prolific SC4 dude.

i think i'm still grasping the whole concept of this superbowl. lol. i also like when they are the underdogs because i'm pretty sure you saw what they did to new orleans. it's also funny to see the people in my school that have said the bears suck but are now acting like they've been life long bears fans. i'm glad that i've always stayed faithful to the teams i was raised on and have come to love just as any other chicago sports fan would know which is why i have respect for cubs fans like you and many other people i know. lol.

now about your cj, it's the best like always and deffinetly my favorite. keep up the inspiring work and i can't wait for more! da bears

yeah i am trying to go for as little commercial repeats as possilbe however i have about maximized, what i consider to be useable highrise BATs.  Since the above picture i have added about 4 more new highrises, that replace duplicates seen above.  however i still need about 6 more, to have no highrise commercial doubles.  And don't say maxis buildings i already have a few and that is already too many.

Also some background this is my regions main and only CBD, it is surrounded by small and mid sized tiles as to maximize the potential number of commutters and possible neighbor connections, this is cool because it makes each line radiating out of downtown unique to a seperate surrounding community and surrounding tile.

The pic above shows half of a large tile, the other half is about the same size, maybe slightly larger, and crossed by many trans lines heading to the surrounding tiles.  I have already added an awesome Japanese stadium with a cool overhanging diagonal shap, and a large area of apartments, a massive commercial wasteland and an even larger swath of single family homes, all this will be shown later this week.

This particular tile has a population of 390k and some change, the region has just now past 1 million, target population: 2.5 million.

Da Bearsss

Title: Re: AK's Custom Content Showcase
Post by: Alek King of SC4 on January 31, 2007, 06:27:40 AM
actually my plugins is now just barely over 1gig (i don't need to tell you why  ;D)
My plugins are simple:

MODS:
Cycledogg Italia terrain and trees
NAM
rail base texture mod from NOB, alternate grass for  Sub, rural, ind and Stone for the CBD.
SuperDemand Mod: Notice the lack of any dilapidation  ;)
RadicalOrdinace: Again i am a sandbox player, but on the other hand it makes growing nice residential that is funtional and won't dilapidate easy.

RAdnom:
A very old STEX upload of grey parking lots the ones you see all over my cities, i then use Jeronig End Parking lots the 1x1 lot the is TE'd, and use them next to each other to create what kinda look like custom created TE'd paking lots to fit odd shaped spaces....

Stations: Lots NOB, ATPX and other japanese rail stations, also some from Frogface, and Tonkso, I use the same ones all the time, but heh, i like them best. Street top Bus and Subway Lots, and SG parking garages.

Residential:
Only 4 or 5 possible R$$$ buildings in my entire tile set. Goober, superstar, NDEX, HKBAT
High Rise R$$&$:All of Bixel's sets, Glenni for R$ and SFBT for R$.
Midrise R$&$$: mostly north american style, Dusks lofts, rowhomes from SG, BlaM modern row, some northern european block style apartments by SFBT, SOMY apartments.
Lowrise R$&$$ I have not shown much as far as single family homes go in this md yet but i use SG small homes and SG trailers for R$ and UK suburban homes by Gascooker for my R$$, and no single family R$$$  :D maybe i will do one neighborhood later...

Commercial:
All the best skyscrapers from NDEX, HKBAT, Tonkso, Glenni, Oneil, Kei, Zummi, Goober ect.
Midrise: Lots of BSC BATs from Goober. Plenty of Tonkso and Glenni, Japanese BATs ATPX, NOB, Kei, ect.
Lowrise: Strictly american style here, spralwy strip mall style lots from Simgoober, Jmeyers small shops all over, did i say Simgoober, and of my recent favorite and active BATers Spa.

Industrial: I allow MAxis ID and IM to grow but still block IHT.  this is the only maxis you will see. (except two or three CO$$ buidings)
Gascooker, lotsa BSC stuff really, Northcountrydude lots all over, SOMY ports, Fukuda, ect.

That is pretty much what i am working with in a nutshell anything else just ask.

Massive Cool pic indeed. Great highrises. Look at that black monstrosity in right to the middle. Great stuff!

So this tile has 390 K inhabitants. How many Commercial workers?

Nice info on your plugins folder. Great many more scrapes you have than I have.
(I still need to build my first city tile with more than 300 K inhabitants)

actually the pop on this large tile is now up to over 400,000, with over 550,000 commercial jobs.
I will get official region census numbers next time.

I haven't shown the other half of the tile yet which contains much more residential and no skrapers
Also i have removed all the scattered marinas and added them to a new marina area on the other side of the
bank, as well as added highway bridges instead of the big dig between sides, looks pretty cool.

Alek-

That's probably the best thought through urban development plugins folder I've ever seen.  I'm thinking about how that info might be more widely shared.

'Course, you still have to be a wizard at urban design to put it all together.

I'm still looking, btw, at the RR station capacity issue.  I'm just slow, but haven't forgotten.

...so much SC4 to play, so little time...

Very nice pics. Personally, I'm one of those people who prefer using Maxis buildings. Oh well, tastes can be different.

I especially like that mosaic of downtown that you posted on the previous page, it's quite awesome...

I spent last night downloading like crazy about 10 more highrise towers, I should have enough now to accomplish my goal of no commercial highrise repeats, which i find to the most realistic, and i think just looks better.

I have also completed the new marina, and worked more on the second half of this tile, which is now about 20-30 percent done as well now  :D

My goal is to have another mosaic at the same zoom level as the previous but of the completed tile done by tommorrow night.  This area is taking longer because it has some natural elevation and instead of completely leveling it like i normally do  ;D I am trying to build into the terrain more.

I am abandoning this region, I got a very strange glitch on this city tile where every time i save, all the props and detail dissapear from the bottom 10-15 tiles, I tried several remedies, demolishing rebuilding, ect, with no success.  &mmm

Sooooo, I hit the brakes and started something totally different and started a new much smaller region, hand drawn in SC4TF, quite hilly, removed all my highrise and hardcore urban buildings and have started my first rural region in a long time, early progress has been suprisingly positive and i should have pics tommorrow.

This sounds great, can't wait to see it.  I'm guessing the extent of your dominion as king probably extends to the woods and fields as well.  What don't you do well, my friend?

...sigh...

Long live the King!

On another note, sorry about the Bears.  I feel your pain- I'm a diehard Sox [linkie] (http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/index.jsp?c_id=cws) fan, and it was a mighty looooong time between World Series.

Be good (but we already know you will be, and more).

Hey AK... the issue you are having with the bottom of the City bitmap in region view isnt saving....

It used to be thought that this was caused buy SC4 not supporting (becuase of error) 1600x1200 resolution but infact... is that your system can not deal with that much detail and info at the higher resolutions...  you are running out of Memory before the save image is complete...

I used to have this same issue... Now that I am runnning 4gigs I no longer have this issue.....  it isnt a game bug... its a lack of system resources...  sorry dude

yeah i kinda figured that was the root of the issue, that is why i have skimmed back my plugins a lot and am playing only med and small tiles, should fix the issue.  The detail on that tile was sick though, ashame really.  Thanks for the reply though makes tons a sense, kinda broke though so don't see myself goin up to 4 gigs anytime soon.

Edit and just so there is no debate, "wait till next year" is the official motto of the cubs.

Hey brother, I was really digging that region you were doing. It was a monolith in terms of just about everything.... too bad.

How about the Chicago Blackhawks? I've been rooting for them a long time now, and they just can't get it together.

You can't even really say "Next year" because that would be inaccurate. More like, "Next Decade... Maybe"

sigh.

actually you are right technically the hawks have the worst losing percentage, followed by the sox, then the bears then the cubs then the bulls, however the Cubs championship draught is truley historic, the way they tease you and still fail.

glad you liked the region before yeah it was absolutely killer, Large tiles are just too much, with the amount of detail i put in i guess. thanks everyone.

WOW!  Those massive shots took a while to load, I'm not used to that.  King of my MD, I hail you.  But I really loved the OPPS in the HK-Venice city, saw Eric Claption once on TV and he lost it, fingers flew off the fretboard and a big cartoon OPPS was imposed on the screen.  See, I've brought you to the level of a god.

For those that don't get the reference, back at the turn of the 70's, people were writing on walls, "Clapton is God."  I think you have a good as grasp on this game as Eric has on the guitar.  The different areas have themes, and there all different themes.  Nothing is overstated, and the rural areas are superb.  Seems like magic to me.

Wait a minute, Ak is doing rural stuff? It´s a bit confusing but all three cities look good as usual...
Did You find a solution to the El-rail capacity problem?
I´m having similar problems in my cities, so it would be interesting t find out if there is a reasonable solution to the problem.
Also I´ve found that whil playing with large tiles is fun, it eats away on the system resources...
I´ve experienced similar problems to the one You experienced both in SC4 which is currently lagging considerably and in CIV4 which actually crashed on me due to lack of available graphics memory.
Does anyone know what one should have in terms of memory and CPU to play the game smoothly at high resolutions and large maps?
As it is now my CPU is working at 95-100% constantly to handle the game...
Title: Re: AK's Custom Content Showcase
Post by: Alek King of SC4 on February 25, 2007, 07:48:02 AM
this game is so demanding that if you have a large tile over 50% developed (half tiles have stuff on them) and over 1gig plugins performance will take a huge hit.  my opinion is 2gigs plus ram is the key but sc4 will still eat your systems resources.
Title: Re: AK's Custom Content Showcase

And most people (shooters) just give you that blank stare when you tell them SC4 will bring any rig to it's knees.  "What do you see in that boring stuff?"  I guess getting 100's of thousand people back and forth is just trivial for a cpu.

That is quite a lot of highrises you've put into a small area. Knowing how you usually build, I'm suspecting that the suburbs will be endless when they are done. I can certainly understand why this is taking some time to finish.

Hello SC4D faithfull, I am finally going to bring it with a real update.  I have been playing and have started a new highyl planned concept region.  The concept an all rail commuter city.  Obviously many sims will still drive to the train stations, schools, ect but the point being all jobs in the CBD will be accesible only via rail.

Neighborhoods will be segregated so that the sims living there will have to commute through neighborhood specific stations.  I have also tried to offset all stations from the main rail lines.  This is crucial as many lines have over 40,000 just in through traffic which would instantly overload all stations.

I have used a med tile for the downtown tile surrounded by small tiles.  This is done to maximize the amount of neighbor connections without ahving more than one connection per tile and screwing up demand. Also thanks to the NAM sims from thee tiles over will commute via train to the CBD, with not a single no job zot in the region.

Final issue is that i am still looking for a way to increase station capacity. I am using a massive terminal station (it is huge) but i am still puching it over 400% of capacity :(

That's a major and absolutely incredible update, Alek.  Figured you were up to something good while you've by hanging back.  The concept is what makes great pics compelling ones (even the mirror-image one, LOL).  It's hard to imagine the time, but even more, the thought that must have gone into this.

It's great to have you around 'thinking outside the box' for all the rest of us- I can't wait to see what's next.

Amazing.  An idea like that some would say it's impossible.  But not for you.  I have a hard time getting my sims to even use the rail.  The traffic views are incredible, I just can't believe you got that many sims to ride the rail.  And the sims that walk to the station from so far is very strange.
Outstanding concept.

Amazing! Your concepts continue to blow me away. I have a question...what station are you using in this photo? I'd like to use it myself.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg261.imageshack.us%2Fimg261%2F1084%2Fmjjjjjbc3.jpg&hash=41df12a87e69b96ac0ee7f1e23f40ba43ac12541)

As for your station capacity problem, have you thought about re-building the entire system and routing half of the commuters into another station, or have each line terminate around a "central core?" London has numerous termini, as does Paris. Just an idea.

I'm looking forward to another update.

Thanks,
Kevin
