Title: Guide Overview, Useful Links and General Discussion

With the release of RHW 3.0 (and subsequent releases), there is virtually an infinite number of ways you can construct your highways and interchanges.  However, this is not a simple task, and takes quite a bit of getting used to.  Many folks have looked at several pictures of RHW interchanges and asked "whoa!  How'd you do that?" and have tried to construct something similar themselves, sometimes with much difficulty that eventually causes them to give up.

This guide will show examples of various interchange types and will describe how they were made.  Feel free to ask questions after a guide has been posted if you are having difficulty.  I will attempt to show how to construct these interchanges as simple as possible, using only the necessary downloads.

If you'd like to submit your own guides to this thread, please post your guide in the submissions thread (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=14058.0) to have it reviewed. Also be sure to follow the format set up in previous guides. Thanks!

Just a quick announcement:

The RHW Slope Mod is now available for download on the STEX!

Link: http://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/27617-rhw-slope-mod/

That way you'll be able to make RHWs like this:

And not like this:

Thinking I should post this here... Ramp configurations for the RHW.

Click for full size.

Like many, I am still getting used to the new names. Guides made prior to the RHW 5.0 release will use the old terminology. Use this chart to compensate as some ramps may have been moved.

For example, the old RHW-4 type C ramp is now called the RHW-6S type D1 ramp. Due to the change in naming, this puzzle piece was moved from the RHW-4 ramp pieces and is now found with the other RHW-6S ramp pieces.

Periodic Table of RHW Ramps...

+1

Clever and informative. Well done.

It would be nice if the table becomes more detailed and include all ramps L-1/2/3/4/5 in different colors according tity that are planned, etc.

I agree, I demand a +1 karma to both Haljackey and GDO29anagram.

The chart in question was made more than a year ago and far before the new naming system was even implemented. On top of that, there have been a few updates:

- Whatever is coloured blue should be now coloured green.
- The category of "RHW-2/MIS" should be excluded out of redundancy.
- RHW-2 D/E/F1 Ramps, though technically RHW-2 to MIS transitions (think S to C transition logic), have semblance to most other ramps and therefore also have a D/E/F1 Ramp designation.
- RHW-3 also has A/B/C2 Ramps for the same reasons as RHW-2 having D/E/F-1 Ramps, except you'd have to compare RHW-3 to the 6S.
- RHW-3 should also come after RHW-4.
- There has been a cap for the max RHW width already established (except we haven't announced it yet). The charts stops at A3-F3 and widths stop at that designated cap.
- The V5 pathing/textures now permit for a theoretical 12S and 10C. Any ramps for those two networks should be coloured red.

And now for subtypes:

- The most basic subtypes should be Outside (default), Inside, Dual, Folded, Shift, Wide, Wye, and Inverted/TOTSO. There's also diagonal, but that's somewhat different.
- Most of this also applies to most other heights, though I don't see the need for an L4 RHW-4 (for example) needing even the most basic of ramps, since all it has to do is go over L3 stuff.
- Due to the complex modelling needed, there probably won't be much in the way of complex elevated ramps (Just Inside, Outside, and Dual may suffice).
- If I made the chart any more detailed, it'd need to become a 3-dimensional or even a 4-dimensional chart...

And now what to expect based on recent teasers...

- MIS Network C1 Ramps
- More C1 Ramps
- 8S F2 Ramp

Wherever they are on the chart, those should be coloured blue.

That's the link to the updated table. If anyone's still lost on what's what, refer to the table.

Excellent work, thanks for updating the table.  It'll be excellent for reference, maybe someone should add this to page one of the RHW thread? ;)

Since some guides now use the TuLEPs for optional/aesthetic enhancements, I may as well put a demonstration on how to use them in this thread.

lol no problem! This took barely any time to create... did it all in one run.

I still refrain from making interchanges in video format because not only are they harder to follow, I often make mistakes and have to demolish/rebuild some sections. I find pictures give a much better explanation with captions in a step-by-step manner.

I love your video's, but like you, prefer the pictures because they are way easier to follow.

Building a RHW Interchange on my livestream:

If you haven't checked out my Twitch yet, here's the link: http://www.twitch.tv/haljackey

In the future I may do seminars for this guide. I go through a lot of trial and error when I build my junctions (which you have now seen :P) and thus I perfer the nice clean and organized setup of the visual guides here.

Anyways I hope it was something you found interesting. I hope to eventually get the junction in the video done.  $%Grinno$%

I'm thinking about adding a photo or two to the beginning of each section.

Perhaps a screenshot of a 'decked out' version of the design, possibly a RL example as well. Or should the screenshot be of a simpler design? Hmm...

Hey guys, looking for some opinions here.

Do you think the RHW Interchange Guide should be expanded to provide tutorials for the Project Symphony AKA Maxis Highway Override RHW network? If so do you think another subsection is needed or just a dedicated thread for the mod?

A subsection would suffice. Plus, the tutorials found in the PS manual can be used here.

And maybe some guides for the MHS? Nam -31 is certainly a new generation of highways.

The only problem I see with this is that The RHW Interchange Guide is already a subsection of the NAM How-Tos and Tutorials which is a subsection of the main NAM board. Adding yet another subsection might get confusing.

Can I float a thought about the guide? Instead of thinking in terms of RHW and MHW as the starting point for the guide how about thinking as the starting point the nature of the interchange that someone might want to build: e.g. an interchange between one highway and another which terminates at the junction with the first. Further in it may be necessary to distinguish between RHW and Symphony-adjusted Maxis but are people going to start approaching the building of interchanges in terms if which type or mixture of types of roads are involved? After all, we are not talking about a paper guide here which can only have a single route through it but about hypertext. So there can be routes by highway type, by number of lanes, by junctions type, etc.

anyone mind telling me how the interchange seen right on the frontpage of the RHW User Manual, lower right side, was made?
seems to be stacked interchange using L0, L1, L2, L3 and thus without tunnels...

I'm trying to recreate this interchange for hours now and it just wont work  ()sad()

I think it was an edited teaser image, as it's impossible to stack more than two networks on top of each other.

Which is why the RHW User's Manual was not supposed to be included.

Oh, and you know how the NAM Team (supposedly) has a history of not lying?

Lying?  Perhaps not.  Using enough sarcasm to drown a fish?  Definitely.  Which is part of the reason why I love following the development.
