Title: ~ Berlin in the roaring twenties ~

Berlin, du bist verdammt dazu ewig zu werden und niemals zu sein.

Berlin, you are a city condemned forever to becoming and never being.

Karl Scheffler

~ There is no other german city, no other capital in the world, that has seen so many fundamental changes of its self. Today, after the reunification of the two german states, Berlin is changing a lot again. It's searching for it's old glamour and for new one. It is a new capital carrying the boulders of history on it's shoulders. A city that has lost it's face. But what was this face? What city are we talking about? Which suposed old glamour is it searching for? ~

~ I want to take you with me to a journey i just don't know myself where it is going to end. Let's find that lost city, this lost Berlin that was famous in all the world. Let's find that exciting Berlin of the roaring twenties! ~

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2F2bb885b1a41f8730b5093dba09518557.jpg&hash=f001a4073d89f1c235cc4eb86e7371beaf44c584)

~At the end of World War I in 1918, the Weimar Republic was proclaimed in Berlin. In 1920, the Greater Berlin Act incorporated dozens of suburban cities, villages, and estates around Berlin into an expanded city. This new area encompassed Spandau and Charlottenberg in the west, as well as several other areas that are now major municipalities. After this expansion, Berlin had a population of around four million. It became the biggest continental city and beside London and New York the third biggest city of the world.During the Weimar era, Berlin became internationally renowned as a center of cultural transformation, at the heart of the Roaring Twenties. ~

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2Feb8f07d24779d0a092e8ca74ca2d51af.jpg&hash=4c806d106df6b5f8a9eb63a04284e947215f168a)

~ Berlin was growing very fast but it's streets were hit by the tales of history. The Weimar Republic couldn't count with democratic traditions and never became a institution. It was hit by many crisis and not often there were street fights between the different political forces in the country. Unemployment and a economical depression, caused by the lost war let the people feel material poorness. ~

~ But people were for the first time free! The hard society restictions during the monarchy were gone and so Berlin became a spot for artists, scientists and a worldfamous nightlife! ~

~ This is, where i want you to take! Come with me and know the Berlin of the roaring twenties! ~

I visited Berlin the last week of August, and it's a beautiful city! I hope you make an update of Potsdamer Platz! I think this is one of the best places in Berlin to learn about old and new / east and west. I can't wait to see you MD!

R E P L I E S

@kelis: Thanks for your comments. I'm sorry that we started a very similar MD almost at the same time. But anyway the twenties were completelly different to the 40's. So i think anyway we both can have a lot of fun and good MD's with a version of an historic Berlin :)

@CabraBuitre: Thanks! Well here wil follow more ;)

@iamgoingtoeatatyou: You don't need to wait so much more ;), here we go a little bit further

@Fresh Prince of SC4D: I'm happy, that you like my work so far :)

@Sam Johnson: Thanks a lot, Sam! I hope i can fullfill your expectations :)

@rikkeflik: Potsdamer Paltz is definatelly on my to do list, but it's one of the hardest and beautifull spots of the past Berlin to recreate. Anyway i hope to entertain you until i'll present Potsdamer Platz either.

@kwakelaar: Thanks a lot for your words. I think some of your great BATs will be part of this MD too ;)

First Update: The Arrival - a place to stay

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2Fbdc5be746f892e06567611c838ca813e.jpg&hash=6fe5fefbf65220d997ffd4471e3632011acf3ace) (http://www.ld-host.de/uploads/images/17ce1852c9d1781df6884350922b42df.jpg)

~ Puh, what a travel! I thought this train will never arrive! But well, here we are. Berlin, our final destination! And here is my surprise for you: As this is just an MD and life in here doesn't cost anything, i thought, why don't invite you guys to the best adress of the capital!? So i booked rooms for all of us in the first adress on Pariser Platz, just next to the Brandenburg Gate; The worldfamous Hotel Lorenz Adlon!~

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2F3bb4653f0010071e2e4ec847b9860eb0.jpg&hash=c9de8ddc860ca2eaa9f2658af32c27e57688e6c0)

~ This Hotel open it's doors in 1907 and during the years it became a institution and has seen all the famous names of it's time. Marlene Dietrich, Albert Einstein, Charly Chaplin! They all were here and enjoyed the luxurious ambient of this great place to stay. Unfortunatelly it was destroyed by a fire four days after the end of WW2, after passing the war nearly undestroyed. The ruins were broken down by GDR-authorities in the 80's. Today in it's place is a modern interpretation of the historic building and again the famous and beautifull prefer to stay in the Adlon. But that won't interest us so much, let's enjoy our stay in the historic building!~

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2F6a03914b1855f73a83743e3668100754.jpg&hash=6ddb1010319970d8887fea38fdf6a71bc6a15099)

~ I organized for us a room with a beautifull view on the busy Pariser Platz and the Brandenburg Gate. So all the time you can enjoy the busy and roaring life of the capital. But now, i am really a bit hungry after traveling by train for so much hours. Let's see, what they got in the hotel's restaurant...~

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2Fc0cb4da5f2ee50b32d32def74f0dd533.jpg&hash=11b699cea02f54c3860d418769182eabdc4c774d)

~ That really was delicious! And the wine... my god! Well on my way back to our room you won't believe who i saw just sitting in the lobby giving tip to a hotel boy! It was Thomas Mann, the famous writer! Really, i'm completelly sure! This must really be the best place to stay in Berlin.~

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2F80d85622071887f62734cdb980b30cdc.jpg&hash=74a711027d9f8b5705c13cf74a7c3a4ced00340c)

~ Well folks, thats all for today. I hope you enjoyed our first evening in Berlin. Let's have a rest and tomorrow we'll have a look around on Pariser Platz. Can't wait to see the Brandenburg Gate!~

I'm thinking of leaving my project in the 40s, I think it's best for the community to show a old Berlin [ Your Version ]

@kelis: I'm sorry to hear that you maybe want to leave your 1940's project. Anyway i like your MD of the modern Berlin. It's done very good and you have great skills on the LE. I got everything i need, but thanks for offering me the map.

@Battlecat: Just paint and gimp, but thanks ;).

@rooker: I'm very happy you like my work. I hope, this MD will last for some month. There's still a lot of work to do and i'm happy to let the community be part of the progress.

@Myself.or.?: Thanks for your comment too! It's great you got the feeling for the historic Berlin, even because for me it's harder to recreate it cause it has changed so much since that days.

@penguin007: Thanks to you too. Well, here we go ;)

Second Update: A gate to the city - a gate to history

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2Ffc3ab61a7d0e11c029afd3bfec5f6c0d.jpg&hash=9677951792d96399a946c93ec2c13b29e6c1efdc)

~ Well, here we are again. Hope you all had a good rest in the confortable beds of the Adlon. But come on, let's go out and see a bit of the city! Just out there is Pariser Platz. They call it the "salon" of the capital. I guess it's because all that famous buildings sorounding him. The french embassy, the Adlon, the academy of arts, the US-embassy, the Brandenburg Gate and at least the house of the famous painter Max Liebermann. ~

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2F7285d67108d2388b55dea3f628eb7cea.jpg&hash=5bb3f98d709a522d68652a3d205803d9d94b5809) (http://www.ld-host.de/uploads/images/fbd479dd13caa8bc24a60db48ace7ca8.jpg)

~ This is a view from outside Pariser Platz. We are now standing in Tiergarten, the biggest park of Berlin. The Brandenburg Gate, built in 1788 to 1791 by Carl Gotthard Langhans, was part of the city fortification. When the citywalls were broke down in 1868 the two gate houses with there columns where built on the two sides of the gate. Today it still marks the entrance to the city center. That may be too why they call Pariser Platz the "salon" of Berlin. ~

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2F187fe77e404ed77dbc2d1fcd87c5000c.jpg&hash=30c4f09f946da7ef3dd84894e3c46a9be79303a6)

~ Brandenburg Gate has seen all the history of Berlin and at least Germany. In 1806 Napoleon marched into Berlin through this gate after defeating Prussia. The Quadriga (statue on top) was brought to Paris as a sign of victory. It returned in 1814 after the victory over Napoleon. The prussian general Blücher found it, still packed in boxes, in Paris. ~

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2Fb827a0610f3bf1a3acddc611ac28e50a.jpg&hash=142de819d8abe6429e33f591323c29625e5747d3)
Return of the Quadriga in 1814

~ Also the Gate saw our victorious troops marchin in, after we defeated France in the war 1870/71 and after the empire was proclaimed in versailles. This was the year, that Berlin became capital of the german nation and from this point on it was growing until it got the busy and fast city of today. ~

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2F1d990ffded74735a586d7668919498b6.jpg&hash=f609bf395e35b62ebb4bdf6f2d2bd4e4ca1d87a7)

~ But it also saw our defeated troops marchin in after we lost the big war in 1918! But if we've not lost this war, maybe we still would have the Kaiser. So somehow i'm glad we lost, he is gone and the republic was proclaimed. ~

~ Well guys, you see that building on the right side of Brandeburg Gate? That's the house of the famous jewish painter Max Liebermann! He is one of the most important painters of german impressionism. ~

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2F125fc5d6afa0f08f70cc6d7f24968812.jpg&hash=18eb4807ee5f589ccb100e0e6d6c0c92ad52c90b)
Selfportrait of Max Liebermann 1916

~ So this was a lot of information for today and i'm sure there would be to tell a lot of stories more about this famous entrance to Berlin. But i think it's enough for today. You just go out and have a look or a coffee. Just aware of the traffic! It has increased a lot since the big war is over, eh! Meanwhile i'll go to write a postcard to my beloved Emmy. ~

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2F0b7bad23bfcec6505e5f509eb460773b.jpg&hash=a38d6d210416c402d72010aa97d85d615901fd82)

Quoteonly this USA flag, I found in the third picture. looks a bit misplaced

Well, i've to admit, that really i made a little mistake here ;). This building is standing for the Palais Blücher, former US-embassy. Just that in fact in 1924 the United States got plans to establish an embassy in germany. But for financial and economical reasons it took until 1930 to sign a pre contract to buy the Palais Blücher. In 1931 a fire destroyed parts of the building and so the USA rent a smaller house in Bendlerstrasse. When Albert Speer, architect of Hitler, published the plans for the new capital of the Third Reich it became obvious that Bendlerstrasse will be eliminated. So plans to restaurate Palais Blücher came closer again. The new embassador Dodd hated Hitler and so he didn't push for the restauration. Even for the 1936 olympiade the works didn't even start, just to provocate Hitler. Finally it took until 1938 that the US-embassy really moved to Palais Blücher, which they had allready bought in 1931. So you are right. In the 20's there were just plans to buy this building, but it wasn't the US-embassy yet. I hope you apologize my mistake ;).

Again some great looking pictures. I am amazed by all the old looking cars, buses and trains, and of course the new old street textures etc. I am thinking the Brandenburger Tor is a made up of several lots and you have plopped them?
To me the most obvious for you and Kelis would be to work together on the 20ies and 40ies Berlin. You will need quite a lot of the same buildings and street-props, but I am quite sure there will be a distinct difference in atmosphere.

@kwakelaar: Thanks for your kind words. Well unfortunatelly kelis decided to stop his Berlin of the 40's

@Tomas Neto: THX

@Scurius: thanks a lot, here we almost go again ;)

@Schulmanator: Of course there will be some of my BATs in Berlin II and maybe in Berlin I too, now, after some are going to be released ;)

@Kevin 1a: I'm happy that you like my MD so far! :)

Well, after some long time we are very close to the next update, which i have to send special thanks to Carlos for!

Ok, guys! After enjoying some days the confortable and luxurious atmosphere of the Adlon, i have a thought about something special for tomorrow.

Right to Königsplatz is set the parlament of our very young republic. When Emperor Wilhelm I. set the first stone, his hammer broke by the first hit. Just 35 years later the monarchy broke down and the republic was proclaimed.

But more stories about this place full of history i'll tell you tomorrow. Enjoy the berlin nightlife but not too long! Have to wake up early!

See you tomorrow, guys!

I got here a hand full of stuff which is almost ready, also for the Museumsinsel ;).

@noahclem: thanks, hope you'll be my guest on this citytour for a long time :)

Third Update: "Dem Deutschen Volke - To the german people"

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2F2bc4aba07fbf40120a84833055524b6b.jpg&hash=8bcb8f53e4d395f75190f8825037e0783b2038f1)

~ Well guys, here we go on our trip through the historic capital. Today i thought we'll just take y look around the corner and visit the "Platz der Republik". It is a very quiet location, because it is just like a part of "Tiergarten" outside the city center. ~

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2F18f0f6010a06d1171c6b12ec26b750da.jpg&hash=4cc95133adeaa04290318e204ce448ff7eec12fe)

~ In the center of "Platz der Republik", which was called "Königsplatz" until the Revolution in 1918, is located the "Siegessäule" (Column of Victory). It was built from 1864 to 1873 as a monument for the victory in the unification wars. The last one against france in 1871 ended in the proclamation of the german empire and the foundation of the german nation. So today it is a national monument, which remembers everyone the birth of our country. ~

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2Ff775f2099977a0ead2a43f5e1947f6d7.jpg&hash=a763dccffe5a75088d6148f611db361220c196b9) (http://www.ld-host.de/uploads/images/7305bc04d3125656a6b3cb87472b5e51.jpg)

~ Right in sight of the "Siegessäule" and directly in front of the "Reichstag" (Parliament building) is located the Bismarck National Memorial. It was erected from 1897 to 1901 and honours the founder of the nation. With a smart strategy he unified the german states and formed the nation in a so called "revolution from above". But his Germany became a monarchy with a parlament that had no real power. Even reforms in the end of the Great War couldn't avoid, that the monarchy felt down and Germany became a republic. Anyway, without the political genius of Bismarck Germany maybe would have never become a nation. ~

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2F8c8e90c1e0c12bf999bac8d6232c2459.jpg&hash=e2293d540ea3d75333dc733c95051ec4f4aa4680)

~ Well the most dominant and impressive building at "Platz der Republik" is the parliament building, called "Reichstag". It was built in the neorenaissance style from 1884 to 1894 and planed by the german architect Paul Wallot. When emperor Wilhelm I. set the first stone for the new parliament building the hammer broke, as the monarchy did just 34 years later. ~

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2Fbcdf1b37b81ec3808de392c2203a47d4.jpg&hash=fc67e90c5a4589230a59fa025311605e1dd67aa5)

~ There were a lot of controversies about the erection of the "Reichstag". As i told you, it is built in the district of Tiergarten, the biggest park of Berlin and so it is outside the city center. This is, because the emperor didn't like the idea, to have a parliament building inside his residential city. That's why they searched for a place outside historic city borders. Another thing, that anoyed the emperor was the fact, that the cupula should be higher than the cupula of the imperial palace. In his eyes, that meant, that the parliament would have more power than the emperor himself. ~

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2F3b8cca40bc00f641e109cff50c64cf62.jpg&hash=c45ef5db48415c4d59ae5ac348e53c69d4a7bf3a) (http://www.ld-host.de/uploads/images/4c0cf9d0b0ab6a0ab9f02b3b414f53c6.jpg)

~ Paul Wallot planed to dedicate the building to the german people. In the front prortal should be a inscription with exactly these words. But the "Reichstag" was finished without the dedication. It took until 1916, in the middle of the Great War, that the letters were put abouve the main entrance. Anyway this symbolic act of the emperor came too late to rescue the monarchy. With the defeat of our troops and the revolution in november 1918 the monarchy ended in Germany and Wilhelm II. went to the exile in Netherlands. ~

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2F4ea0cfe7a4e0c28969b25df3009180cb.jpg&hash=0d091b16ea6ad8c78d0ff38cc441e24c76d4bc77)

~ On 9th november 1918, the social democratic parlamentarian Philipp Scheidemann proclaimed the german republic from one of the windows of the "Reichstag". Since that day, the parliament has a real power in our country and the words "To the german people" became true. Well guys, that was again a lot of information for today. Hope you enjoyed our short trip, the sights and the silence here outside the historic city center. Just take some more looks around. I'll just pic you up in some time to see the other side of "Platz der Republik". See you in a while, guys! ~

~Here in my travel guide it says, that in the 17th century a lot of french hugenotts settled down in this area. King Frederick I. gave a piece of land to the lutheran and hugenott community to build their churches. But again is was Frederick the Great who gave the look of today to the plaza. From 1780 to 1785 two identic towers were added to the churches.~

~It's name Gendarmenmarkt got the plaza, because in the years from 1736 to 1773 there were located the stables of the Kurassierregiment "Gens d'armes". In the center of the plaza was built a new national theater by Carl Gotthard Langhans which burned down in 1817. The plans for the Schauspielhaus, which dominates the plaza until today, were made by Karl Friedrich Schinkel himself and the construction was finished in 1821.~

~Until 1888 every week there was a market on Gendarmenmarkt. Just later the plaza was greened up an got it's flower and plant ensembles.~

~It is also a important spot for the democratic movement in Germany. In 1847 a first sign of the upcoming revolution (1848) was the so called "Kartoffelrevolution" when some people demonstrated here because of rising food prices. The victims of the march revolution in 1848 were bared on the steps of the german cathedral. And from september 1848 the Prussian National Congress used the great hall of the Schauspielhaus for their reunions.~

~This is really a beautifull place, isn't it guys? Well, I hope you liked our trip of today and we'll see more of the city center soon. Take care!~

Everything looks fantastic as usual.  I think next time I'm in Germany, if I make it to Berlin I'll have to take all the pictures from this thread with me as a guidebook.  SC4 tourism!  Your play style is considerably different than mine, but your updates are always a stimulating read.  &apls
