Title: The residence of prussia's kings - building the historic Potsdam
Post by: peterycristi on February 10, 2010, 05:56:26 AM
Hi folks,

As this project is becoming bigger dimensions every day I decided to open a new topic to show all the works which are done by me and helpfull friends to complete this project one day. At first i'd say sorry for my english, i know it's not the best but hopefully you'd understand me ;).

Well, the plan is to recreate the destroyed city center of Potsdam, situated in general around the "Alter Markt". For having an idea what i'm talking about i've put an overview of all the projects which will be done.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2Fd8faf24a99cb1cf5b8a53847e3320ff5.png&hash=e1e984990b6802493f7eba81baa5379590a923d9)

In detail this are at the moment:

1. Lange Brücke
2. Palasthotel
3. Palais Barberini
4. Stadtschloss
5. Knobelsdorffhaus
6. Rathaus
7. Obelisk
8. Nikolaikirche
9. Marstall
10. Corner building at Alter Markt
11. Alte Kommandatur
12. Stadtkanal

The first works, like Nikolaikirche, Obelisk and Rathaus you can allready find on my BAT-thread:

http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=6046.260

Potsdamer Stadtschloss

I will start (go on) with a small introducion about the Stadtschloss of Potsdam.
At first you should know, that Potsdam today is the capital of the german state Brandenburg. But at the time when the Stadtschloss was built it was just a part of Prussia. While Berlin was growing very fast with the cultural development and the military successes of Prussia and especially his king Friedrich the great (1712 - 1786), Potsdam became finally residential city of Prussia.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2Fb36aef8c4d98b5f4c2604af1d85b676a.jpg&hash=6b48ec2dec1eea3965f6722dd076e51bb4f457a7)

While the governmental work was done in the capital Berlin, the royal family prefered to stay the most of their time in Potsdam, just in front of Berlin's gates. Any King, and later german emperor, had his own favourite castle to stay in Potsdam. One of them was the Stadtschloss, located at the Alter Markt just in the heart of the city. After some early kings used it as their residence in the last days of Prussia and during the german empire it was just used as a formal residence but not more as a place to live.
After the fall of the empire with the end of the monarchy, caused by the november revolution 1918, it became a museum and was restaurated in the 30ies.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2F83c42411474bd77a52dd88bfa3465e50.jpg&hash=5604f604c08d56f1540ad67ae8e49ca8e5e664dd)

Potsdam was almost not destroyed during the second world war. But on april 14th 1945 the historic city center was hardly attacked by a allied bomber squadron. The Stadtschloss an a lot of buildings close to it were hardly damaged and burnt out. During the battle of Berlin Potsdam had the function of an outpost, observing the moves of the red army. The russians answered with a strong artillery attack. The anyway strongly damaged city center was now destroyed completelly. The west wing of the Stadtschloss was hit by artillery which blowed a big hole in the wing and seperated it from the rest of the building.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2F971a62ff2a9bf0739702bb9be9e82812.jpg&hash=ca274523f4431a9b3bc6cd4f6b7edf8ae2ab6d92)

After the war the ruin of the Stadtschloss became a usual view in the city center and there were made plans to rebuilt it. A commission of architects and arts specialists declared that around 80% of the walls were still in a very good static condition, so that a restauration of the Stadtschloss would be possible.
But when the GDR authorities showed the plans for their new city center it became quickly clear, that they planed to blow up the rests of the Stadtschloss, even this happened some years ago in Berlin.
On november 1959 started the works and until april 1960 the rests of the Stadtschloss were eliminated from the city view.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2Feb7e63a66dc80ce4164b09c897026e91.jpg&hash=bdbaf5627ee87750786ea5692c8973b67975ffec)

After the end of the socialist GDR regime and the reunification of the two german states the people in Potsdam started to find a way to get their old city center back, which was still in the mind of many people. A famous german showmatser and Potsdam citicen, Günther Jauch, donated to the city the rebuilded Fortunaportal.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2F219bb5d6b4a04722453eda65b85688e4.jpg&hash=9c1f0bbf1290668b53fe6b06a33be76923e3496a)

After a long fight against critics and problems like the financial question the government of the state Brandenburg declared their will to bild a new state parlament in the cubature of the Stadtschloss.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2Fabe0c2e6eec39dac1c9410e4d7ebb3d1.jpg&hash=29f3755f687c4b762655da03104cb4390ef6f8aa)

The historical elements, like pilasters or statues, will be payed by donations. The constraction work should be finished until 2012. Historic fragments which are stored in many places of the city and number around 600 pieces will be used.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2Fe68c6ace79e2fbbb1f939e23cb2fbff9.jpg&hash=2cd2841d4d44f74fb526b5ff743a3bb675cb8a53)

Well, i hope you enjoyed this short information about the Stadtschloss. For my "Alter Markt - Potsdam" project it is the most essential building. Even if the modell is not completelly finished i would like to show you the most important parts of the building

 Very impressive.  &apls
This model is great and all the small details are incredible.  How many hours do you think you have put into this model so far?  You must have a lot of patience.  This square you are developing should look awesome once completed.  I can't wait to see the final stage.

This is a great project, and it is wonderful to read the the Potsdam Stadtschloss will be rebuilt. It was very sad to visit that amazingly beautiful place and see the main square without it, especially knowing that it could have been rebuilt after the war but instead was demolished.

The BAT is very beautifully done; the roof textures in particular are really perfect. Do you use gmax or Max?

Hi folks,

the show must go on! Here a first cornerbuilding from the Alter Markt. It was hard to find out, what it was used for, but I think it was a café. So i just called it "Café Bauer"  ;D.

the only picture I found:

hi folks,

just a little progress on the Alter Markt. two smal houses:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2Fb85176de3fbf0e6f847cdd5a8818b43f.png&hash=a36471b2f0c1c34a54f5b1405d759480c42e021c)

meanwhile i tried something completelly new, constructing a bridge. At the moment i'm not completelly sure, if i can do it functional, but here ist just what i have so far (one pice is a pilar and a arch 16x16m)...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2Ffb63d9e17fcee1bbc162a6713e30bb8c.png&hash=8616df8dc609e273e43324d1a83796d344d9c466)

hope you liked the today update!

edit: well, just a very fast modyfied modell, which will serve me perfect close to the Lang Brücke.

and a historical postcard, which shows the bridge and the emperors monument:

They both look great, specially the statue  :o

The only comment I'd have is about the arches in the bridge, they are too narrow and look squashed, I think you should make them at least 1/3 longer.

Bridge engineering, and transit functionality is hard work, especially for this game. If you can go the extra mile, that would be awesome, as it visually looks nice. If not, you can dl and modify the road top transit lots on either end of the bridge, to let traffic to go through. Since the bridge is in the making, this would be the perfect opportunity to model a diagonal one. Again, since  diagonal bridges can not be drawn over water, you can do road to subway to road past the bridge again, and there you go, but don't stop with your pretty looking buildings.

About the bridge, maybe you can make it compatible with CAL canals, that would be really cool.

thanks a lot for all that kind words!

@debussy: You are definatelly right. But the form of the arches has a technical reason. I made the brindge piece as a functional one, so it needs to fit in a space of only 16 m length. So like this it will be hopefully just easy to mod the bridge. Any change of the length of the arches would complicate that a lot.

@j-dub: thanks for your info. I didn't rather understand it completelly  :D but it's good to know, that someone will help me, if the functional thing will not work. ;)

@puresim: thx!  ;D

Bueno, muchos saludos a Argentina. Si estoy por este rumbo un dia, voy a pasar  ;D.

@io_bg: thx :)

I know what you mean, my solution (at least the one I intended) for the schlossbrücke I made was to divide it in 2 different pieces, one with the pillon and the lateral parts of the arch and one with only the medial part of the arch.

Hey also, you can use a canal type thing for the bridge and be able to use various size spans. See some of my work:

@JonM: yes, i could do it like that, but as i want to use the real maxis water in my Potsdam project, i want to do a functional bridge as possible. problem is, that Potsdam is on the river Havel, which had only in some very few parts embankments. Most of the shore was and is natural. So a functional bridge will fit my needs much better, than doing a canal set.
Anyway i like a lot that bridges you made! They are really fantastic, never saw them before. Don't you have your BAT-thread? Or didn't i just find it?

@debussy: you gave me really a hard homework! But after some trying, thats the best result i could get:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2F5896bf8cc952c10404aec27001ecfa59.png&hash=bed94b2d27893b13ec2f5b481d16963ad92a3629)

(low quality rendered)

this will also fix the problem i had with the starter pieces...

You can make diagonal bridges if you make the bridge a overhang prop and make it for landbridge use that way you can just drag a diagonal road/street and the overhang bridge will over both sides of it and you just use plop water on either side.

How about you make these armies an animation like the walking people or the fire works and they would pop up every year at special date. =) That would be totally awesome.

Hi folks,

a long time since i didn't post here and a long time i didn't bat any Potsdam building... but now we are back to topic. Thanks to an MP on simforum.de i was going on a little working on Potsdam. Concerning the Stadtschloss i considered retexturing it. In the new colours i followed the just finished reconstruction of the original building which opened its doors this year as the state parlament of Brandenburg:

Another Potsdam building i wanted to do since a long time was Garnisonkirche. This military church was a famous landmark of the city until the ruin was blown up by GDR authorities in the 60s. The reconstruction is also forced but there is a controversy about it, because in 1934 president Hindenburg and chancellor Hitler came together in this church at the "day of Potsdam" celebrating the "marriage" of old Prussia with Nazi Germany. Well, i don't think that one day makes the history of a building and architecture shouldn't be political...

Hope you like it so far...

Really great work Peter.

That church reminds me of one I am thinking of doing: Christian's Church (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian%27s_Church,_Copenhagen)
The copper might be a little to dark.

Could you please add some dimension to the images (height/width)

EDIT: Thank you, Robin. A lot better.

Welcome back! And although I think architecture is used in political ways very often and therefore we cannot deny the relation, I think that this occasion is not a reason to curse this church. I will gladly use it in my cities. If I have a neobaroque neighbourhood, that is.

Beautiful work on both buildings! The new color scheme on the parliament building looks great. You might get more versatility out of leaving that wall/gate at the one corner as a separate prop, if you hadn't already planned to do that.  :)

Hi folks,

well, after checking the previews of castle and church i noticed, that the dimensions aren't the same. So what started as a resizing project ended as a rebatting project ^^...
