Hi,
I'm doing a re-creation of sorts in that I'm copying the basic layout of a city but I expect the similarities will end there. As my cities have become more and more real the flaws have become more and more obvious, if you know what I mean. The primary culprit being the overall layout and dimensions of things; I've never quite been able to shake the desire to try and "have it all" in one city but it just can't be done. The city I have chosen (by zooming in at random in google earth!), has a narrower than 45° rail section that makes copying the layout accurately impossible. So I had a look at FARR and it would certainly enable a more accurate version. Can you use it to join to neighbouring cities or do you have to convert to regular rail first?
Also I have found gauging RL scale a bit tricky. The tutorial I followed assumed the city you were recreating belonged to the terrain you were using. But my map and "re-creation" are from different continents.
Any further advice or things to expect with such an exercise? (I know (for eg.) that I am likely to face eternal commuter issues this way, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it)
(oh & no, I'm not attempting to copy all those streets (probably ;)), just the general layout)

<EDIT> Is there an official FARR thread/forum somewhere, I have a few more questions. Or should I just ask them here?
for eg. How do I connect my section of FARR to my diagonal rail here? the diagonal to FARR piece only seems to point in the other direction... ()what()

and there is only one angle of straight FARR pieces, right?
OK, take 2. As my queries are mostly FARR related at this point I have collated them here in my second post...

thanks
1) Use the NAM creations board or you could probably use the RAM Board, but your more likely to get answers in the NAM creations
2) you should be able to create like a 2 tile neighbour connection with normal rail and then plop the FARR on top of the connection
3)Towards the end of the TAB ring there should be a diagonal to FARR piece (I think it has been released, pretty sure tbh)
4)Yes there is only one angle
thanks for that jonathan
As for #3, I am using the piece you describe in that photo, but my problem is it's facing the wrong way. (it's heading up towards the right instead of the left where the other rail piece is)
How do I get it to go the other way?
just use the home or end keys like normal it should work. I'll try it myself and see if theres a bug
Well I loaded my city, got the right bit, lined it up with my diagonal rail and BAM, it fell into place, the right way around. ()what()
I couldn't believe it... I made another replica setup to try and repeat the problem, and did temporarily, until I realised there are more than 4 rotations!?! :D
I've never be aware of pieces having more than 4 before; does this happen elsewhere? Thanks again for your help  &ops
So now I've at least got the bits facing the right way, but they're still not meeting up.

On the right of picture is maxis diagonal rail going into the diagonal to FARR piece. On the left is a section of the FARR straight section rail. Shouldn't these be in line with each other or am I yet again missing something?
Hi thingfishs, because of the angle that FARR works, they are not always going to meet up (they work in blocks of three). The FARR section on the left is only one tile off meeting up. If you were to shift it one tile right, it would work. I always make sure that I am not going to be left with a section of say, two tiles in between two lines of FARR.
Although the two lines that you have look misaligned, they actually are ;)
ah I get it now... thanks Shultzy
Another likely issue seems to be intersections etc. I can only see one for a regular road. Are there FARR overpasses or other options? Where streets are concerned are you forced to convert to regular rail in order to make the crossing?
Thats right thingfishs, have to conver to road. Something I'm not happy with at the moment while using FARR roads. Have to convert streets to roads to make an intersection. As far as overpasses go, there is no puzzle pieces yet. I usually go under FARR pieces instead of over.
That's a real shame... I wonder if anyone is working on some FAR(R) intersections etc... (hint hint) ::)
As for FARR under pieces... what/where?

Another question I have as I slowly lay out my city (and I have decided to copy all the streets too), is whether there's a trick to get street border connections working? Or has someone created a road piece that at least looks like a street for this purpose? It will be a massive handicap without some way to achieve this.
I have also obtained comprehensive zoning maps of my "chosen" city which will help a lot. No more big patch of industrial off by itself... ;)

If you create a road connection, demolish all of the road except the square on the edge, and then connect a street to it, it looks and behaves almost exactly like a straight street connection.
Or you could use this tutorial for a better looking street connection: http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=7350.msg232470#msg232470 ;)
