Title: How to get rid of the shadow around a model's base?
Post by: cogeo on April 28, 2010, 08:42:46 AM
Is there some way to do this?

Some suggest raising the whole scene (objects and LODs) 0.05m (5cm) above ground but this helps only a little. From my experiments, having the LOD face at some distance off the actual model works the best, however this is not always possible.

Any other way please?

I'm having a hard time picturing what you're trying to do. Are you using MAX of gmax?

Codeo, do you mean dark "border" at the very bottom of the model?
It that is the case than i know who/what culprit actually is - too tight LOD. Move them about 20-40cm off the model and those should disappear.  In game those few cm wouldn't be too noticeable...

jmyers2043 and SimFox, thanks for your replies!

Yes, I was talking about the bottom of the model. Widening the LODs indeed works, but can't be applied to all cases. Eg you can't place props very close to the building.

Below is an image of the effect this technique has (look at the fences at the front). The right one is with the original (tight) LODs, and the left one has the LODs widened by 20cm.

There is an improvement, and I'm going to try 30cm and 40cm. But is there another way?
