Title: Planning Gotham City
Post by: Eddie on April 24, 2007, 02:08:49 PM
Hello, erm, Devotionists! This will be an extension of my not-quite-a-CJ at ST. The reason that I don't call this an MD (or a CJ) is that it really has no organized updates or storyline yet (which I'll save for the final result--the real MD). Basically, this is just an outlet for my creativity, and a way that I can get feedback from SC4D, to see if I can get different responses at different websites. I'm looking forward to what you guys think.

As some of you already know, this experimental MD (and the final result) will follow a comic book style. It's Batman for God's sake!

Goodbye for now!  :satisfied: (I don't really smoke).

the md is very well done but your copying me well now i have some competition best of luck to yah. great first update

MOD EDIT:  Derek, I'm sure that was said in fun, because all I see is two nifty CJs; each pursuing a different genre, albeit involving the same subject matter.  There's plenty of room here for both you guys.  -DE

"Ones to Watch"...cool.  ()stsfd()

Dedgren had a faulty link though. The link in the "Recently Published" forum led to "Best Sellers."

MOD EDIT:  Hey, watch it!  One slip and that link could be to the Outer Uzbekistan Society of Proctological Research and Farm Equipment home page.  Anyway, it's fixed with my apologies, Eddie.  -DE

Edit: Thanks, D!  :)

Wow, where was I?  I didn't even know this one was at Devotion.

Just so people know, SpecialEddie was planning this for quite awhile.  The actual MD/CJ will come later.  He's just teasing us with this thread....
Title: Re: Planning Gotham City
Post by: Eddie on April 28, 2007, 11:16:28 AM
Wow! Lots of comments. I'm starting to like this new MD system here. I'm getting the same amount of replies per update here and at ST. And SC4D is a smaller site, too. Does that say anything as for how efficient this categorization is?  :) I'm no longer bumped into the abyss of Page 2 at the CJ section.

Replies:

derek_pearce: I see you've edited your comment from "Your trying to steal my views." to "your copying me." How is it copying when our MD's are completely different, as dedgren mentioned. And does it really matter if you were first to post your MD? There have been at least 2 Gotham CJ's over at ST way before you even set one up here. Competiton will be good for the both of us. Good luck.

HabLeUrG: Thanks! Glad you like it.

guurgkud: Many thanks.

dioangel: Thanks, but do you have anything else to say about the update? "awesome start" doesn't really help.  &mmm

patfirefghtr: I am glad you're eager.

Strechnitz: I will mesh them quite well. They will be bread and butter.

football_fever: Thanks for clearing that up. You're one of my more detailed commenters. All your feedback is useful, and have been extremely helpful.

Thanks for all the comments everyone. However, compliments only help to boost my ego. I'd rather have one detailed reply (like football_fever's) than 10 "great jobs!!" It's this type of criticism that helps me get better. And as this is an experimental CJ to see what kind of feedback I'd get, helpful tips are extremely encouraged--compliments don't hurt either, though.

Today's update will focus on the Joker's lair, or hideout--an amusement park on a peninsula on the outskirts of Gotham City. Schulmanator from ST gave me the idea for this update, so lots of thanks to him.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg252.imageshack.us%2Fimg252%2F6484%2Famusementfu1.jpg&hash=94d65ce296ab68b96de889e38606daa982e5f2ba)

Notice that the lights are off. The park is abandoned. Creepy huh?

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg89.imageshack.us%2Fimg89%2F4958%2F42360452pz6.jpg&hash=1534b3accca2763dbf9a2a374e24e0f29a5dfbf1)

And to go along with the entire Joker theme, the storyline I'm currently working on is called "Be a Clown" a tale in which the Joker befriends a young child, which gives him a short-lived spark of decency. The story is based on the episode "Be a Clown" from the Batman television series (not the campy 1960's one), though I made some changes to the story.

Feedback is welcome and appreciated.  :)

Dude, who cares?

Anyways, Eddie, that's a great amusement park. Reminds me of Luna Park, but bigger.

Even though you have only provided 3 pictures, I can tell that this is going to be amazing. Those 3 pics are outstanding.
I really love that amusement park. It really captures that eerie feeling.

Definately looking forward to more.
Title: Re: Planning Gotham City
Post by: Eddie on May 01, 2007, 05:29:28 PM
guurgkud made me realize that I've only posted three pictures, so I decided to make an update today! But first--let's reply to your replies!

Glenni: Hey! You're pretty excellent yourself.  :)

patfirefghtr: Well creepiness IS my middle-name. Wait a minute...*checks birth certificates* I've been wrong all these years...

derek_pierce: *sigh* This will go on and on and on, until we really see who was first ever to post a Gotham CJ/MD. I'm over it, and I don't really think it matters anymore. I am however, looking forward to that Gotham City Mega Pack.

Shadow Assassin: Well I think you've mentioned before that you're from Australia so I searched "Luna Park" on Wikipedia, and I clicked on the Sydney one on the disambiguation page. And guess what was the first picture:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fcommons%2Fthumb%2F9%2F9f%2FLuna_Park-Sydney-Australia.JPG%2F250px-Luna_Park-Sydney-Australia.JPG&hash=7caf3d4a7117d45f44c0c2aaa020832dd51c5254)

It's the Joker!

guurgkud: Three pictures only?! Well then I'll have to change that...

Update time! Well I finally got around to doing that "Be a Clown" title card. This version is of my own creation. You probably want to see the Joker turn around, but I think it adds a sense of mystery.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg224.imageshack.us%2Fimg224%2F4110%2F99096244uu8.jpg&hash=fd51782a4ec9f030a8b2c3a10edfcf6b61d75015)

And here is a sneak peak at "Be a Clown." The mayor makes a speech about safety in the city only to be interrupted by police sirens. Ironic isn't it?

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg177.imageshack.us%2Fimg177%2F7163%2F31720313dj7.jpg&hash=3482bb2431889fef00a058249a2a0054d38e097f)
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg177.imageshack.us%2Fimg177%2F2424%2F99290558kc9.jpg&hash=3ec1d403f96bc9c7686c881d29a372268eb81ac2)

By the way, I'm thinking about a release date for the final, official "Gotham City." I'm considering posting it on July 7, because it's a catchy date (7-7-07). I also thought about releasing it on October 1 or Halloween for that Gotham mood at that time of the year, but I thought that would be too far away from now. I know how a lot of you guys are really eager to see this thing, so I think I'll keep the July date.

Bye for now!

Now that's a teaser! :)

I'm really looking forward to see the complete version of this, it looks VERY well done judging from the teasers!

And it must be REALLY embarrasing to make a speech about safety in the city when being interrupted by sirens all the time. :D :P

This CJ's almost gone into the abyss...Batman's the only one that can save it!

HabLeUrG: Thanks for the feedback. Hope you'll stop by again.

guurgkud:  :( Sorry if the dates are far. I'll make it up to you. I'll post an update today. How's that sound?

football_fever: Halloween would be too far away, I agree. This thread should help fill that empty void before the official release...

Glenni: Hey, glad you like the teaser. Well, come to think of it--this entire thread's a teaser!

A sneek peek at one of my finished storylines: Vendetta.

Well, I'm not usually much for this type of journal, but this - I have to admit - is a masterpiece. It's amazing how you make the game shots intertwine so seamlessly with the comic style drawings. And you have chosen your pics so carefully. I just love that policestation by the sea shot, by the way.

Title: Re: Planning Gotham City
Post by: Eddie on May 11, 2007, 10:17:03 PM
I had no idea this MD would be so controversial here at Devotion.  ()stsfd() Well there was a lot of bickering and quarrels, but Gotham is back on track. However, that's not without some consequences (I lost the privelage to rate members, and I still don't know why  ()what() ) but I guess it's a small price to pay to keep this MD here. It could have been worst. Now, let's all just get along.

Replies:

emilin: A masterpiece, eh? Coming from the master of ports, I'm glad to get such praise.

Glenni: Luckily, I read your post before it was edited, and I thank you for your support. Stop by again!

Yoman: Unlike Glenni however, I didn't have the opportunity to read your post before you had to edit it. But you said a bad-word? Ooooh!

guurgkud: Looking forward to your comments on the release.

iamgoingtoeatyou: Hey, iamgoingtoeathotdogsalot. I enjoy your feedback. Stay patient, young one!

Yoman (again):  :angrymore:  ::)

Anyway, on with the update--well, not quite an update. It's just more of a progress report to show you guys what I'm doing: which is downloading buildings on the STEX which look similar to the ones in my storylines. Here's my first challenge: finding a pizza place that looks like the one in the image below.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg515.imageshack.us%2Fimg515%2F3262%2Fpetefo8.jpg&hash=3947545c24197be4ced9117db68f893255960e48)

And here's its SC4 counterpart. It's a waffle-house, but you get the picture. Note that the awnings and brick color are somewhat the same. The sign can easily be edited away.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstex.simtropolis.com%2Flots%2Fsim151%2Fsim151_waffle%2520house%2520v%252020%2FWaffle%2520House%2520Preview.jpg&hash=303980a223c53d2fcf009c143ba17d084fb68ca7)

What do you think? Did I make the right choice?

Now here's another part I decided to put into this progress report. I want to know what you Devotioners want to see next in this MD. So far, I have these completed storylines that I'm willing to show sneak peeks of in this thread.

Be a Clown: In which the Joker befriends the Mayor's son.

Feat of Clay: A story that involves an actor obsessed with appearance--which later becomes his downfall.

It's Never Too Late: An aging mob boss is redeemed.

On Leather Wings: A bat-like creature is committing robberies in the city. Is Batman to blame?

Pretty Poison: There's more to someone than their pretty looks. A gorgeous woman is about to prove that.

Two-Face (Part One): The District Attorney struggles with dual personality.

Vendetta: A Gotham City detective is being framed for false crimes.

The next sneak peeks are up to you!

anyway excellent work

Title: Re: Planning Gotham City
Post by: Shadow Assassin on May 12, 2007, 03:07:38 AM
Mmm... waffles. :D

It doesn't have to be Batman canon, though. Just go with the flow, choose what you think will fit best in your city. I think the biggest problem with a recreation is that people let themselves be too limited by what exists in the city that is being recreated. Take some creative licence (and I think you've got plenty of that heading our way, anyway :P), and just choose buildings that feel 'right' to you.

You'll be surprised at what your gut feeling says.

I do look forward to seeing you release this CJ, though. It'll definitely be interesting.

Well it's better than nothing, but patfirefghtr suggested a sneek peek of Arkham Asylum. Though it wasn't one of the choices, it gave me an idea for an update today!

Replies:

HabLeUrG: Thanks for suggesting those, but would a porno video shop really work as a pizza shop?  :D I'm glad you helped me find some buildings, but after trying out your suggestions, I decided to keep with my original choice--the waffle house.

Shadow Assassin: I'm trying to make it as canon as I can, because if the audience sees the buildings side-by-side (which I'll be doing in the CJ), they'll notice the differences and that usually distracts from the story. I want them to see how similar the Batman-building is compared to its SC4 counterpart.

bat: The bat speaks!

patfirefghter: Waffles mmmm. Thanks for suggesting Arkham.

jacqulina: Thanks, jacky.

Arkham Asylum for the Criminally Insane. This castle-like mental institution houses criminals such as Joker and Two-Face--criminals who have trouble distinguishing fantasy from reality with their distorted minds.

Once again--you guys have the choice to choose the next update! CHOOSE!  >:(

Is Batman to blame?

patfirefghtr: Thanks for the comment.

And now, the last sneek peek of Vendetta, as suggested by guurgkud. I don't want to preview so much of the storyline that I have nothing to show when my official CJ comes out... Enjoy!

Eddie:  Baffles me why this really interesting MD isn't getting a lot more attention.  There's so much quality effort apparent here.  It could be that, while the SC4 content is amazingly well-integrated with the "comix" style pics and story, there just isn't enough of it to capture the reader's interest.  I don't know, and I've been guilty of looking here but not commenting myself.  SC4D MD commenting generally has stayed pretty much on track- so it has to be something else.

Readers- if you have suggestions for our friend as to what he could be doing to warrant your increased interest, now's the time to speak up.

Ah, I think the biggest problem with the MDs is that most people are used to seeing topic summaries like on ST - you know, the second line of text that people usually use to tell others that they've got an update. But the rate of commenting in proportion to the entire active community is actually quite good.

That aside, Eddie, you've got a brilliantly designed city and some excellent pictures. I can't wait until the 7th.

Whoah! I had almost pretty much given up on this CJ until dedgren saved it from drowning. I thought people simply weren't interested...or was I some part of some great government conspiracy?! But anyway, let's get this show on a roll. We have some lost time to make up for.

dedgren: Thanks for the comment, david. I was baffled too, as to why I hadn't been receiving feedback (when the first few updates generated quite a bit of attention).

HabLeUrG: Gracias! Though I'm not really trying to make these comix funny, but if you think so, I have no problem with that.

patfirefghtr: Who's derry?  ()what() But I think I get what you're trying to say. You like off-the-beaten-path kinda stuff. Well this CJ will be really off-the-beaten-path.

Shadow_Assassin: I agree. I actually though the rate of commenting for sc4D compared to ST was pretty good...in the beginning of this CJ...and then the faucet started slowing down...then it turned into a trickle...and then the water company shut it off altogether. But I hope this CJ will get back on track. I really want to build awareness for the release.

patfirefghtr: Thank you, pat!

Filasimo: Yeah. I think everyone has good memories watching Batman TAS as a kid. Glad you recognized it!

Just to let everyone know, Gotham won't be entirely a story-based CJ. It'll also have the classic element of eye-candy. Basically, I'll be showing pictures (as seperate updates) that'll showcase what part of the city is being set in the story.

Here are some building comparisons.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg261.imageshack.us%2Fimg261%2F8130%2Fsnapshot20070620223353mq5.jpg&hash=3f278bab204e48da4381548fd83bc9275cb987ee)

The above picture looks like the below image.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg340.imageshack.us%2Fimg340%2F3245%2F19pi7.jpg&hash=98497a45e35ef204bbbaf75ea88cc2eac3688e5f)

And the image below shows the grittiness of the city, lots of trash, graffiti, noisy elevated rail...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg340.imageshack.us%2Fimg340%2F3474%2F16ke0.jpg&hash=0c07757adcd58bdbe0085d86ab6252a8ba1c5925)

That's all, folks.
