Title: New California Republic - (R)Evolution Of A Village
Post by: Sourcedog on July 27, 2010, 05:23:58 PM
There i was. Finally. After what felt like an eternity in a train that seemed as if it would fall apart every minute, I just wanted to take a leisurely walk. I left the train and stepped onto the platform. I stretched myself for a bit, trying to get my joints to stop hurting. Then it hit me. The smell of manure. Pretty overpowering actually.

I've been told that the village i was about to become new mayor of was rather calm and serene. The people would live a simple life, but would be nice and welcoming to strangers. It wasn't really what i was being used to, but after that last... thing, I wasn't really in the position to make any demands. At least, I was able to get back to working. After all, it didn't sound too bad. But I started to have second thoughts about all this.

I tried to suppress my urge to gag. I didn't really succeed, though. I covered my nose with a white handkerchief and took a look around.

I was expecting it to be a village. Some kind of idealized village I had some images in my head of. It was none of that. It was a boring, dirty, smelly place. And it was all mine now. Yay...

I dusted my suit, lit a cigarette, grabbed my stuff and went. Somewhere around had to be my new office.

The village wasn't exactly small. It was tiny, actually. Just some houses, a diner, a small store... at least they had a fire station. Oh, and farms. And dirt. A lot of dirt. And all that dirt loved to settle on my shoes instead of where it belonged on the ground.

I grunted when I looked at my shoes. I tried to dust them, but it seemed as if I would make it only worse. I had to capitulate.

I asked around for a bit, trying to find my office. All I found out was that there wasn't an office. The former mayor, some man in his late seventies who was buried under his own tractor, managed the village from his own house. So there wasn't really an office for me. Or any other kind of official building, for that matter. So I had to settle with a tiny motel room.

Some guy had the brilliant idea to build a rest stop in the middle of nowhere, close to the village. A long highway, leading through the area, nothing but dirt, trees and more road for miles. Seemed as if his idea was good, as I could see quite some trucks and cars standing around the property.

I rented a room and entered. It was simple, as the rest of the village, but all I could think of was a bath and a nap on a comfy bed. So i couldn't really complain. While waiting for the water to fill the bathtub, I booted my laptop. A lot of work lied ahead.

All mine now...

There is something about this village I really like.  It looks very much alive.  Nice work.
