Title: Using NAM with CAM
Post by: extrakun on January 16, 2011, 09:03:31 AM
Hi, I have a couple of questions for using NAM with CAM.

1. If I do not wish to increase the traffic capacity with CAM, which options in NAM should I use?

2. I am installing Roadtop Mass Transit mod, and there is an option for capacity in the installer. There is one option that basically 'choose this if you have CAM installed'. Will my choice in #1 make any difference.

Thanks in advance!

This is a very good question and I would be interested to know the answer as well.

It is a good question.

1)This is totally up to you.  The traffic configuration tool, which comes with the latest version of NAM, allows us to create our own traffic simulation.  Whatever you want, but the idea is for realism is that your networks get to capacity at the same rate as your city grows.

2)Some background: When CAM was created I believe there were 4 traffic capacity options for NAM.  Because CAM would allow for much more density, it also solves the traffic mess that would be caused.  Since then, NAM has been updated many times, while CAM still uses this old fix.  It is reccomended that you do not use the traffic mods from CAM (the "Z_CAM" folder).

I would imagine RTMT came after CAM (because of the CAM option in the installer), but it came before many of the changes to NAM.  Hence, it uses outdated titles for the various capacity changes.

RTMT is asking you your road capacity because it wants to fit in with the NAM.  I imagine the best bet these days would be to either use trial and error to figure out which one to use (if your stations cause traffic, try the next higher capacity).  I would consider just using the Radical Settings and be done with it, but someone may have a reason as to why that is a bad idea.

It will be interesting to see how the next version of RTMT deals with this fact.  Perhaps the two mods can work together to make some cohort trees?

The RTMT 3.50 install options (CAM, Radical, Standard, x2, x5) were due to the versions of NAM and CAM available at the time. However, if the RTMT 3.60 update (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=2247) is installed, the files that are installed in the original will be replaced by the current versions (High, Low). So, as far as which option to choose for NAM/CAM settings when installing RTMT 3.50, it really is irrelevant if the update is also installed. Hope that makes sense...
