An F-18 passes over San Diego Bay. Hey! I have this as a background form my computer!

WELCOME TO SAN DIEGO, CA!

San Diego is America's 8th largest city with a population of 1.3 million within the city and 3 milllion in the county itself. San Diego was discovered by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542, naming the site San Miquel. Around 1769 Father Junipero Serra, renamed the area San Diego found Mission San Diego de Alcala and from then on San Diego become known as the , "Birthplace of California" since the first of the 21 missions was established in San Diego. The original town of San Diego was at Old Town, at the foot of Presidio Hill (pictures will come soon!) several miles from the water. The city was incorporated in 1850. In the 1860s, a man named Alonzo Horton bought land in what is now Downtown San Diego. He began to sell lots to his large piece of land and San Diego grew. Years after the Navy came to town in 1901 and from then on, San Diego has become mainly a military city with the presence of several military branches. After that the rest is history! When the military came to town before World War II, San Diego flourished and this once sleepy town became a a major city in the US. San Diego's main economy is defense, manufacturing, and tourism. San Diego is a very popular destination  thoughout the year. San Diego boosts an average of 70 degrees F throughout 201 days of the year.  There are over 100 neighborhooods throughout the City of San Diego. Anyway there is just a little bit of history of this great city! More more info visit Wikipedia.

About this MD
I have had this vision of mine for the past 3-5 years about rebuilding my hometown of San Diego.  You see a lot of people rebuilding New York, Chicago, LA or other cities. That's fine and all but I like a little diversity so I am going to rebuild this city because San Diego is underrepresented and is always in the shadow of Los Angeles. I intend to recreate this city as best i can. I obviously can't rebuild everything but I am going to try. Freeways will go in there exact location or as close as I can get them. So will also major streets in the city. I will also try to provide with a little history and some real pictures of what I am currently building, like neighborhoods and such. You will see what I mean soon. I am going to get as close as I can to making the real San Diego and this willl be be no easy feat. I have no idea how long this will take. My approch is to build the freeways first, then major roads and just generally fill up the rest with sprawl. Without further ado, Welcome to San Diego!

Good start, looks like a fun project, I'll be keeping an eye on it as I lived in San Diego (well, La Jolla, actually) when I was 6 years old.  I don't remember much except the warm waether, so welcome after living in Detroit, The Race Track, and The Zoo.

Recreations can be tricksy, I tried one of San Francisco Bay Area last year and got bogged down before I ever built my first road or house.  And while putting in the transportation systems early is a great idea, you may want to consider the above sea level water features (rivers, creeks, lakes, etc.), too.

UPDATE: Downtown Grid System

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg121.imageshack.us%2Fimg121%2F625%2Fdowntown.gif&hash=d6caf779e4deccaca843cd1ecf5589f4fbfb8cd4)

As you can see from above, Downtown San Diego has a grid system in which numbered streets run North-South and leter streets run East-West. Obviously I can't really recreate this 100% but this is pretty damn close to the real thing. Lttle Italy, where Grape and Hawthorne Streets are can't be like the really neighborhood. Also I am missing streets 13th to 17th streets as u can see in the map above. I ran out of room to place them but I willl put them in the other tile. The street system around Petco Park is still not completed. Also I did not place the trolley system yet, next update. You will see what I mean!

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg545.imageshack.us%2Fimg545%2F5513%2Fdowntownone.jpg&hash=575bac28febf8d6dc06102d74948f09e73f395ca)

Freeway are laid down first. Intersate 5 runs around downtown and CA 163 runs through Balboa Park and ends in Downtown.  Pretty close resemblance to the real thing.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg703.imageshack.us%2Fimg703%2F2412%2Foverviewt.jpg&hash=f907a3319a1650f0b1c183ec7d375fe9b288f84b)

An hour later streets are laid down.......

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg96.imageshack.us%2Fimg96%2F7541%2Fupperpartofdowntown.jpg&hash=5f8da7799e9e682849220c0e74956ebe83345e0c)

The map that was provided will give you all the names of the streets in downtown. The large squares are for the Civic Center and Horton Plaza.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg96.imageshack.us%2Fimg96%2F9968%2Fwaterfrontp.jpg&hash=1a1a793cbbc5b806da4b228ccf02d2297bf5d68c)

The waterfront with realisitc piers that are similar to the real ones in San Diego. Refer to map for names.

Above is Seaport Village. I am pleased with my grid system!

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg211.imageshack.us%2Fimg211%2F9205%2Fcoronadobridge5b15d.jpg&hash=aa9cb84ffc5a4a43d89bb2a43ddfb9ad702205d4)

I obviously can't make a bridge like that in Sim City.... so this is the Coronado Bridge in MY San Diego

I think that a slope mod will make the network a bit more smooth and nice :)

Looks GREAT!  One question:  did you rotate your map before you started so that you could run your grid in a true north-south-east-west manner or are the streets of SD really laid out in a true NSEW pattern?

Looking forward to more!

Great work on this.  It's going to be very interesting to see how the city fills up.  I agree Elias (Terring7)....you do need a slope mod.  The streets and roads look okay, but the highway is too bumpy and it's hard to see but I can assume that the rail won't look nice up close.
Looking forward to your next update.

Robin

UPDATE: Downtown Trolley Routes

Today's update will focus on the trolley system in the downtown area:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg195.imageshack.us%2Fimg195%2F3553%2Fsantafedepot.jpg&hash=13a63179b1716a6229de18b513ef4e58835e254b)

Santa Fe Depot is the main train station for San Diego County.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg190.imageshack.us%2Fimg190%2F7378%2Fcstreetstation.jpg&hash=67c8d0cdf918c8941b518719455089167cc26d84)

C Street Station where City Hall is located

City College &12th Ave Station

Seaport Village Station. In real life this part of the line is on the ground. Due to the placement of that street and lack of a diagonal GLR track piece, I am placing the trolley in the air for this section.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg706.imageshack.us%2Fimg706%2F1696%2F12thave.jpg&hash=a019a45582ed2fa2246cefc31f27c86e6c0b162e)

The trolley runs along 12th Ave all the way from City College to PETCO Park. City crews are building this segment of the trolley in order to rebuild San Diego!(hehe)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg691.imageshack.us%2Fimg691%2F7199%2Foverview2w.jpg&hash=2d492a402c6fac1d094615f394d4b0b3919e573b)

Here is an overview of the trolley downtown. I still have some more work to do with the trolley but that will be for another day!

TEASER Here is a small teaser of things to come later this week. I am waiting for ST to be upgraded in order to finsh Coronado, since i have to download some BATs. The SC4 pic is of the center of the City of Cornado. The street system is pretty similar to the real thing, hence why I posted a "real" street map of Coronado! I will let you be the judge of how real I am trying to make this CJ.....

Bravo &apls &apls &apls &apls. I thought of doing this exact same thing in '08 but never did because of time and not knowing how to best go about it. I love SD as it was where I was born (I currently live in Montana...brrr) and want to move back. Last time I was in SD I was 15 (p.s that was 15 years ago so you guess my age  ;D). Anyways some great work there I will be watching closely to pick up ideas.

EDIT: Yay I am the first on page 2

Excellent recreation of my old hometown! I can actually identify all the places you are talking about! :)

And yeah, the Coronado Bay Bridge is impossible to replicate accurately. Unless of course the community finds away to allow diagonal bridges....

Thanks for all the Comments! Thanks for telling me about the bridge. I had no idea you could do that! I don't think I will use it since you can only make a road bridge not a freeway....
Sorry for not posted an update for a while. Modern Warfare 2 has been eating up my time....Anyway I pulled an alnighter? or all nighter? and played SimCity. Yes I should have been sleeping but I think I will be able to survive my lone class in a few hours.

UPDATE: The City of Coronado, PART I

Coronado is an affluent community located in San Diego County a few miles from Downtown San Diego. As of 2010, the population is around 30,000. According to numerous reports Coronado is one of the most expensive places to live. Coronado lies on a peninsula that is connected by a ten mile isthmus called the Silver Strand. Coronado houses the Naval Air Station North Island (which I will show you in a later update) and is also a training center for Navy SEALs. In Spanish Coronado means, " the crowned one." When the Hotel del Coronado(the building in the picture above with the red roof) opened in 1888, the city became a major tourist resort destination. It is a National Historic Landmark. Notable guests have ranged from Babe Ruth to our(depending on where you live) current President, Barack Obama(as well as other presidents). Just a fun tid bit of information, one guest back in 1892 was found dead on the steps leading to the beach. She had commited suicide. To this day guests from room 3327 have reported flickering lights and floating objects.....I'd think you'd better call Ghost Busters! Anyway Coronado is a popular place for tourists and residents alike. Enjoy for stay in The Crown City!

Have you checked out the RHW yet for sections of the 805, 405, etcetera that are super wide? I will be checking back here often!

Rain.....yup it's that time of year.  The rain hasn't really started here in Toronto, Ontario, Canada but I sure it's just around the corner and I'm looking forward to it actually.  Everything will get cleaned up and the leaves start to grow.  Great time of year and you capture it well.
I look forward to your next update.

UPDATE: Point Loma (PART I)

This seaside community of San Diego is home to nearly 50,000 people. Point Loma separates San Diego Bay from the Pacific Ocean. Loma means "Hill" in Spanish. The original name given for Point Loma was La Puenta de la Loma de San Diego. Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo discovered Point Loma in 1542. Since then the area has grown into what is today: lots of single-family homes. the best known landmark that sometimes represents the city of San Diego, is the old Point Loma lighthouse. It wascompleted in 1854. It was a poor location due to low clouds and fog that would obscure the light beam. A new lighthouse replaced the old one and was placed in the water. Since then Point Loma has grown to become a popular neighborhood in the City of San Diego. Anyway, welcome to Point Loma!

Very interesting update again. I like the huge cemetary and the area with the supermarket in the street triangle very much. Some of the slopes are a bit steep, though.

Maybe you could post a Google Maps link to the area you are recreating. It would make it easier to compare.

Keep it up.

School is almost done, but there is lots of work that needs to be done, so SD is on hiatus for a while. if i dont reply with an update after the 45th day, where does my CJ go? if it is inactive can i ask someone to bring it out of the inactive section?

Well you were supposed to read the MD rules before starting, those have all the  information. Yes, if you do not update for 45 days, this MD will be moved to the Inactives. If you wish to post a further update, you will have to PM a mod and they will move it back for you. You must obtain permission from the Mods before updating an inactive MD! Anyways, hope to see you back soon.
