St Andrews started as a region for me to test out a few ideas and techniques. I liked what I did (and am still doing!) enough that I wanted to share what had been created!
A few of you may recognise this Journal from the CJ section of Simtropolis, where it is being discontinued. The staff here at SC4D have graciously given me permission to publish St Andrews here. The first few updates will be highlights from ST before I carry on with newer updates to the region.
Without further ado, lets take a look at the first district in St Andrews, Barnt Green!

Barnt Green is a small hillside town near the banks of the River Teme:

Hope you all enjoyed my first entry! All comments and critiques gratefully received.
Next Up: We'll take a closer look at Barnt Green's downtown and markets!
Great looking start here! I look forward to more!
I agree with Noah, great start indeed!!
Robin
Nice start. :)
I like what i see :) &apls
My first thought: Oh wow...sweet.
My second thought: Here is another MD to follow.
Hey Reikhardt. Excellent start to your MD. I love the opening shot that you provided. Your attention to detail on the rural elements is far better than I fare and very well done.
I look forward to seeing more.
Cheers!
Scott
I like it!
Can you share the tools and techniques with us that you used to create your waterfalls? I REALLY like the looks of them and would like to attempt something similar.
Lora/LD
Beautiful start!
I like the little village with this lakes. And the waterfalls looks nice. :)
Replies:
Noah: Thanks!
Robin: Thanks to you too!
scott1964: Thanks you sir!
Elias: Glad you liked it!
Stray Cat:: Thank you for the kind words. I hope you enjoy following this MD. My favourite part of city building is creating the rural scenery, as you will see in future updates!
ldvger: In just a few updates time, I'll post a tutorial of how I make waterfalls and I'll list all the tools and mods I use. I must point out that Jaqulina first used the techniques I employ, but no harm sharing them again!
Kergelen: Thanks! I find that using different bodies of water really makes an SC4 scene look more alive.

The town centre of Barnt Green, where locally owned stores are found. As a small farming town, the influence of the major national and international chain store has yet to be felt:

Great update! &apls
I love all the trees and the gravel shoulders on the roads add a nice touch! A charming little town!
Very nice.
Nice start the waterfall looks great!!
Will
Very nice start on your MD!!! Fantastic images!!!
Very nice, very pretty little town and I like the no sidewalks look, too. How do you do that? Are all your buildings plops or do any of them actually "grow". If they are plops, I can't begin to imagine what your mayor mode drop down menus must look like!
Lora/LD
First, thank you in return for you kind words back.
A great update. Your use of trees is simply astounding. I try to use SimFox's trees like you do but your work is just so much better than anything I can seem to create. You have such an eye for balance, layout, and harmony that I can only wonder at. Very well done.
Scott
Very nice start, and a spacious and lush green village. Great work
Replies:
Elias: Thanks, but no need for the worship!
noah: Thank you, I try to make it look as dirty and rural as possible!
Raphael: Cheers!
Will: Thanks, enjoy the close ups in this update!
Tomas Neto: Glad you have enjoyed it so far!
Lora: Many thanks! I use this (http://www.simpeg.com/forum/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=174) and this (http://www.simpeg.com/forum/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=173) to get that sidewalk look. 95% of what you see is grown, my Mayor Mode menu is huge enough already!
Scott: Thank you for the kind comments. I find the trick with Simfox trees is to plop the bigger ones first at random points and then use the smaller trees to fill in the gaps. It is best to avoid regular patterns, as nature is rarely organised! I may do a mini tutorial at some point showing how I plop trees and other flora if people are interested.
kwakelaar: Many thanks!

Today we'll have a look at the waterfall which dominates the landscape. As a small disclaimer, I did not invent this technique for building falls, the idea was entirely inspired by Jaqulina, who I think is the master of landscaping. Well worth checking her work out!

Reikhardt, I love what you've done with Barnt Green, it looks amazing, and the detailing is excellent! I'm looking forward to seeing how you do your waterfalls.
Your friend,
Jordan
Very nice job. Where did you get those walls near the train station?
Those waterfalls are epic!!

Ciuu96: Many thanks!
Kergelen: Many thanks too! Most of that flora is actually in one the packs linked below.
nbvc: Thank you sir!
Jordan: Thanks, right here for you!
jafmo: Those 'walls' are actually ionionion's Limestone Quarry (http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/files/file/24501-limestone-quarry) lots with some flora plopped on them!
Elias: Many thanks! I do try my best ;)
And so to business!
After one or two people asked how I made my waterfalls, I thought I'd show how I do it. As mentioned before, these type of falls have been done before (notably by Jaquelina), but this is to show how I make them.
Tools and Resources:
Essential for building waterfalls:
Jeronij's Culverts and Effects (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=125) - Contains the water effect we use to create the cascading water
Mayor Mode God Terraforming Tools (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=1711) - Lets you use the God mode tools in Mayor mode. My favourite plugin of all time!
For beautifying your landscapes I recommend: Chris Adams Pasture Flora (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=1886), Peg Pond Rock Mod (http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/files/file/21673-peg-ppond-rock-mod/), Hemblem's Rock Mod (http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/files/file/24353-hbs-ploppable-grassy-rock-mod/), Peg Pond Terrain Props (http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/files/file/22701-peg-ppond-terrain-props-pack-1/) among many, many others. If you spot anything that you don't know, feel free to ask and I'll endeavour to track the mod down.
Let's Get Started:
First step start a new city and to try and keep the game's performance acceptable, I turn the Shadow setting to low in the graphics options:
#1
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252012%2F1NewCity.jpg&hash=4a109a33b0401453438c0a9f3eee65704523e4e9)
Next I access the God mode tools in the Mayor Menu (see the plugin download above) and select the 'Mesa' tool:
#2
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252012%2F2Godtoolsinmayor.jpg&hash=9c01ca9fc599fbcbc4031775574ae6b33de33c5e)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252012%2F3MesaTool.jpg&hash=f1ac5b60063ec2a5317578652e28b4263fdb72ba)
I use the Mesa tool to create a small plateau, roughly in the centre of where I want the water fall to be:
#4
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252012%2F4MesaRaise.jpg&hash=792c1b4b3b729f66bafc38f5f246c5cc1654072e)
I then use the God mode Quick Level Tool to create the base of the waterfall:
#5
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252012%2F5Godquickleveltool.jpg&hash=50363b70ecc6296033e33ef1eef1c877eeb0460f)

The finished base:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252012%2F7Level1done.jpg&hash=2890b78e6bcb57e3275f786d77b16d555fff218d)
Now using the same technique, I'll create a second tier:
#8
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252012%2F8Level2.jpg&hash=45c73894b6b4d37e94de8f78fd6c9dd1dfc2a0d7)
And a third:
#9
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252012%2F9Level3.jpg&hash=e5bed06485da085444c417a65650c4cd09026828)
I HIGHLY recommend a save now! In fact I'd use the quick save (ctrl + alt + s) after nearly every adjustment, as it's really easy to muck up all of this work and have to start again!
Select the 'Steep Valley' tool from the God mode menu:
#10
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252012%2F95SteepValleytool.jpg&hash=6d419d0a42ecd40514984a1c20d7deaf84c77474)
Gently (and I really mean GENTLY) draw a crevice into the hill side; It doesn't need to be precise or level, you can always touch up later:
#11
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252012%2F10SteepValleyGouge.jpg&hash=d2b9b82282cb66d006e5ff966d89e2acf28fa853)
SAVE! Now continue downwards:
#12
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252012%2F11Gentle.jpg&hash=f30e1690a24d27d4925750c325b98999bc6aeb34)
For a more natural look, I'll add a little fork into the proposed route for the water. Feel free to leave it with just one stream until you are comfortable with these techniques. Then use the the God mode 'Shallow Valley' tool to make a lake or river for the waterfall to flow into:
#13
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252012%2F12Gentle2.jpg&hash=d9eada0a74025dad76d3a389ccd9bda8a11dbc9b)
#14
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252012%2F13LakeRiver.jpg&hash=811ab42f371e7e2b4372c5d3ea12a6e433ed48df)
It all looks pretty ugly and blocky right now so we will employ the God Mode 'Plain Smoothing' tool:
#15
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252012%2F14PlainSmoothing.jpg&hash=7cd33ead96413781340004ed0e41e9a5286755b7)
And using a small brush, GENTLY smooth all those sharp edges:
#16
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252012%2F15Smallbrushgentle.jpg&hash=886a98209e122e8b0c48c01cb1355f1ed791d775)
#17
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252012%2F16Smoothedwateredges.jpg&hash=f804c840179314e3a68d7285b9a86ef8bfbfccff)
Much nicer! Normally I'd spend a bit longer doing this, but for the purposes of this tutorial, that'll do.
Now for the interesting part; Go to the Mayor mode/ Parks section and select the 'JrJ Water Drop' plop. Thankfully it's near the very top of the parks menu:
#18
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252012%2F17MayormodeParkswaterdroptool.jpg&hash=0999390f2c9b54973ddb55d8ca9429ed7eaaf79e)
Now plop the water, with the white arrow pointing in the direction you want the water to flow (downhill of course!):
#19
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252012%2F18Waterarrowdown.jpg&hash=c417192bfaa9052b820695b307d7bf334b095b27)
Water is flowing!
#20
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252012%2F19Waterflowing.jpg&hash=4222733573570bb532fd8b3d76209872b5ba437d)
You may find the water hits a bump and stops flowing; Simply use the Mayor Mode Valley tool to make tiny adjustments to the offending section or plop more water drops on the other side of small bumps if it is difficult to terraform. When the flow makes it to the 'real' water it will stop and look something like this:
#21
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252012%2F20WholeWater.jpg&hash=71e360a893eabf183b1bca9571643d93556de46f)
All being well, you should have a waterfall!
After this I'll delete the water drops and start adding various flora and trees around the water. When I'm happy with that I add the water drops back. I remove them because on big falls on big maps the water can really dent the performance of the game, even on my machine which runs Crysis at a fair pace! After a very quick run over with rocks, trees and flora, I turned shadows back on and produced the two below shots, which I touched up with GIMP for maximum effect. Even spending much less time than I would for a MD update, the end result still looks pretty good I say!

As always thanks for reading and commenting. I'd also like to say a general thank you to everyone at SC4D for making me feel so welcome!
If anyone uses this to make their own falls, I'd love to see them!
Next update: Barnt Green's farms & a bridge over quiet water!
I'll have to employ this technique in my own MD, it looks great! Thanks for sharing!
Your friend,
Jordan
Hello my friend!
So you moved here -no problem with me, it's hard to escape from Papa Nardo ;= :D
Nice start, and great work with that field and all those greeneries. The water falls, well, without any doubt good work and a useful tutorial (even though I am not a big fan of large water fall in SC4 as you might know)
Take care - and don't forget to make backups!
Bernhard
Wonderful landscape of his MD, also liked the stable, thanks for sharing your techniques.
I will continue following the development of their city.

And for a short update today, a few shots of the farms which support Barnt Green's economy. We head out out from the town centre over Lake Carr:

And so our last look at Barnt Green before moving on. Today we'll look at the small industrial complex and the old abandoned quarry.
With no major highways nearby, most freight travels by road from the farms and is exported via rail:

Next Update: Our first look at Water Orton!
The quarry looks really great.
Wow Reikhardt. I was busy so I missed a few updates. Once again, you have wowed my aesthetic side with your fantastic perspective on the scenes you create. Simply fabulous.
And thank you for the advice on using SimFox's trees on the previous page. I will practice and see how well I fair.
Cheers!
Scott
The quarry turned out great. &apls
Since you asked for suggestions: I wouldn't use streets inside the quarry. Instead try using one of the many available mayor mode ploppable gravel/dirt to make it look like an unpaved road. And I would plop some machinery (trucks, diggers ...).
Replies:Dantes: Thanks!
Scott: Thanks for the kind words and no problems with the advice! Hope you get some good results with those fantastic trees!
Raphael: Thanks! I tried the ploppable gravel, but sadly I haven't got steady enough hands to get good results! They tend to look messy when I try ;)

Great to see you over here at SC4D! As always, fantastic job with the rural areas!
Damn...I'm moving in! That small town is amazing. I found myself dreaming of living there while browsing it...simply amazing.
Cheers!
Scott
Unbelievable! When can I then drag in the small village? :o
Great job with this small town! The previous industrial update looks really nice too and would look even better if you switched a couple of those rail curves to wide-radius ones. The true gem of the last couple updates is your work on that quarry though &apls
Very detailed rural scenes. I like them.
I must find a place in my region to make a similar waterfall.
What an impressive start! I love you details! Those waterfalls are stunning!
Replies:
Alex: Thanks for the welcome and thanks for the compliments!
Scott: Glad you like it! Not enough pubs for me though ;)
Dantes: Thanks, though not sure what you want to drag :D
Noah: Thanks for the kind words! I regret not using wide radius curved rail actually, it does look a lot better. Glad you liked the quarry too!
kodlovag: Thank you sir! Good luck with those waterfalls!

In the late 1970's a handfull of local business men exploited a loophole in the Parish laws restricting building. The result was a massive boom in industrial production for the region.

Next Up: Cofton Hackett's Central Business District.
That last shot is class! &apls
+ the bridge, specifically the detailing under it is very nice!
I like how you mix the trees in your rural areas, that makes a huge difference!
thanks for the links ;D and enjoyed the updates.
More please!
Lovely pictures. &apls
Great rural shots, I particularly like the detailing of the river! &apls

As the industry grew in Cofton Hackett, the population and commercial interests of the town increased too. This has led to the development of a CBD of sorts with a small number of office developments located in the centre of town:

Apologies for the small graphical glitching on some of the shots, I was forcing Anti-Aliasing on my graphics card and didn't realise it caused this problem...

Cofton Hackett isn't only industry and commerce. To the north of the downtown lies the original village centred around the church and small vinyard. Sadly only a small residential area and a handfull of small farms remain now:

Next up: A bridge over murky waters!
Oh boy.

Here is both high speed and high quality. WOW! :o
No wonder I haven't commented the last update - you're way faster than ol'Papa Nardo! :-[
Great work. Nice layouts, nice shots, combined with some stories. Love your Style!
Take care - and don't forget to make backups!

Fantastic updates! I go away for a couple days and you punch out several more excellent looking scenes!
Your plopable water streams are particularly inspiring. I love the rocks you used to detail your shoreline in the last few updates.
Lovely nature shots, the detailing is great  &apls
Wow, you are really fast! Great work on these updates! &apls I really the freight transit areas, that little deck overlooking the pond, the rural stuff in general, and especially that monastery/vineyard thing in the most recent update. Keep up the great work!
Hey, great updates! And you are very fast, we can't comment so often.
Amazing update!!! Great work!!!
Your MD is really fantastic!.
All your pictures are beautiful.
And the waterfall is very, very nice.
Looking forward to more of your great work... ;)
Man, you're just an update machine! I'm outta here for 2 weeks and look what I miss! Oh and is that house in #10 for sale? I must admit I'm stunned with the amount of patience you must have to plop all that nature stuff by hand, and you actually make it look good, too! &apls
I really adore those green landscapes. Keep it up &apls
Here is an MD with incredible scenic waterfalls and beautiful rural city scapes and these are the resons we'll be spending the month with Reikhardt in OSITM. Congrats and I look forward to seeing what you have in store for us.

Replies:Bernhard: Many thanks indeed for the kind words, nice to know papa Nardo approves! As with yours and other comments regarding speed of update, I will slow them down now so people can keep up (and also as we are about to hit updates on current work!)
Battlecat: Thank you sir! I owe many thanks to Marsh for telling me where to find the Flat Rocks (http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/files/file/24793-grey-rocks/) and thanks to NBVC for creating them!
io_bg: Many thanks! In all honesty I could make nature shots all day and not bother with towns & cities! Maybe they should make SimNature!
Noah: Thanks Noah! Those freight stations of Paeng's are great, I love his work.
kodlovag: Thank you! Duly noted, brakes are being applied to update train!
Tomas Neto: Cheers!
bat: Thanks for taking the time to look at my work and thanks for the compliments!
Alex: Thanks! The locals don't take to kindly to out of towners coming in and driving the house prices up ;) Plopping MM is kinda hypnotic, once you start it's like painting a picture, the time just flies!
Elias: Cheers! As do I love the red landscapes ;D
rooker1: Many thanks to you and all the SC4D staff for making St Andrews OSITM! This really is the icing on the welcome cake here at SC4D!
Battlecat: Thanks again!

And now as we leave Cofton Hackett on our way to Small Heath, we pass over the Barnsley - Marshall rail bridge, constructed over a small, boggy section of land; This was a little terrain experiment, so apologies if it's not quite up to usual standards!

I hope you enjoy St Andrews during it's spell as OSTIM during April!
Next up: An introduction to Small Heath (all new and exclusive to SC4D)!
Actually a very interesting experiment, and you have done very well to try to create a swamp. Maybe the green water is a bit misleading in the first picture (I did not see at first that it was water). But in the next images I think it works.
Fantastic update!!! &apls &apls
Congrats on OSITM!!!!
Congratulations on OSITM for April! You've really done an excellent job with your MD here.
I also really like your experiment for this update. I'm a sucker for both MMPs/nature scenes and rails and you've composed these very well. Nice little house too--does some kind of crazy swamp person live there?
Also, nice "unrelated" newspaper articles :D
Looking forward to an exciting April around here!
Congratulations on OSITM!
Well deserved.

That was quite the update!
I really enjoyed the rural shots, and the one with the isolated house is a beauty!
How did you get the grass to appear like that? Is it photoshopped? Regardless, its beautiful :)
Very nice update. Love the rail line :)
I like the bridge. Especially the pictures with the rain/fog effects. Great athmosphere.

Amazing update! &apls
Where do you get those flat rocks that are along the shore in the last picutre? I see everyone using them but I have no idea where to get them from.
Sean, I went looking for them, but they appear to have disappeared from the STEX.....
Reikhart, you're just pumping out updates, I love it! What you've got here is amazing and I cans see why you were selected for OSITM ;D
Your friend,
Jordan
Fantastic work. That looks eerily similar to something I made... ::) :D

Awesome teaser!!!
I can see! Nice work
Beautiful teaser! You've done some really nice work with the rock and shoreline there. Can't wait to see the rest of the update!

SeanSC4: Thanks! Link sent in a PM for you but here they are again! Flat Rocks (http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/files/file/24793-grey-rocks/)
Jordan: Very kind words, thank you!
Marsh: Do you mean This one (http://img841.imageshack.us/img841/4548/pical.jpg)? I wondered if you'd notice ;) I loved the angle of the shot and I wanted to see if I could replicate it! I nearly made a reference to your shot in the original post, I'm not ashamed of being inspired by your work ;D
Tomas Neto: Thank you!
wwecruz: Thank you too!
Noah: Thanks Noah. Full update in the next day or two!
Should have an update in the next day or two (7 month old babies eat RL time!) but out of courtesy, I've replied to those kind enough to comment here!
Well your earlier terrain experiment was very effective. I like how the swamp turned out, it's very unique. I also really like the details in your latest mini-update. Looking forward to your next one!
Replies:
Battlecat: Thanks for the comments! I have to say I can't make up my mind if I like the swamp or not, but if I try something different I'll always present it in my diary. Who knows, maybe I'll inspire someone to do it better!

And so, our first look at Small Heath!

Small Heath is a modest town which has formed by a number of small villages merging together over time, unchecked by planning restrictions. Today we'll have a look at the church, the rail station and the town centre.
The Church is actually one of the oldest buildings in Small Heath. Notably in 1978 the then Mayor, the Rev. AJ Willis, had to employ a team of English stonemasons to repair some of the external walls of church at great public expense.

Trains only stop at the local station twice a week. People rarely leave or come to Small Heath.

Super cool update! Something about that first shot just feels so organic it's hard to take my eyes off it.

Robin: Why thank you sir! I really like how those shots came out!
Battlecat: Thank you! I've found it really hard to present those long shots of my towns, mainly due to the fact that you can take plopping MM trees only so far from the buildings before your brain melts! Marsh's Simfox tree controller has made it a lot easier to match plopped trees with MM trees.
Noah: Cheers!

As Small Heath has grown slowly over time, industry has sprung up wherever appropriate land was available. As such there is no industrial 'district' as one may find in a larger, better planned town:

Great work another settlement!

Nice fishing harbour &apls &apls
The details here are very great &apls
Where did you get the blast furnace at the bottom of pic #4 from?
-Matthijs
Looks good. :) Where did you get your fish harbor?
Awesome update.
I really like the first pic with the old style industrial lot and the bridge.
I do have one suggestion for you. If you know how to use LE, open it up and remove the break wall from the fishing lot, replace it ingame and make your own break wall with plopable rocks that you have already used in that area. The end result will look awesome and than the fishing port would fit in perfectly. ;)
I look forward to your next update!!
Robin
Great pictures of that town!
And the harbour is really nice!
Fantastic updates there.
I'm looking forward to more.. ;)

Matthijs: Thank you! The furnace you refer to is the Old Lime Kilns (http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/files/file/20852-old-lime-kilns/) which is very good for putting a bit of industry into a rural town!
scott1964: Cheers! The Somy Fishing Harbour (http://members3.jcom.home.ne.jp/somy000/p5.htm) is over on Somy's Japanese site. You can download without translating or registering. And many thanks for being the 100 post on my MD. I never thought I'd hit that landmark so quickly ()stsfd()
Robin: Many thanks! You have hit upon my biggest problem! I tried to put the harbour deeper into the coastline to try to partially hide the ugly breakwall as I cannot use the LE! I have read the guide to it, but I simply haven't had enough time to try it! Learning the LE is on my list of 'to do' items for SC4...

And so we come to the end of the month and the end of St Andrews as an OSITM. To finish off the month I thought I'd do something a little different.
My good friend,
Sticks Calhoun, writes a (mostly) daily webcomic and a few months back he ran an extended story, which he kindly gave me permission to re-interpret in SC4.
Sticks & The Stump
I was hiking on a mountainside when I came across a splintered stump seeping sap
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252024%2520SS%2FLongshot.jpg&hash=8fea6242bacd0296c54df6844e74371336790590)

"Help!" It gurgled. "I'm dying, but with your aid I can still live to see one final spring."
"What can I do?" I inquired.
"Pull the axe from me. A dead oak lies ten paces to the west. Fell it. Though it no longer grow, it still draws water from my roots."
I took the axe and approached the rotting tree.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252024%2520SS%2F2Deadtree.jpg&hash=7ddb8aa5bddfa8de9ffde12f425ff8b1a741a154)
But even though it was hollow with rot, still it cried whilst being struck.
I wasn't going to swing again, but it was too late.
The already crumbling trunk shattered and fell to the forest floor.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252024%2520SS%2F3Deadtreefelled.jpg&hash=b0dea6bf6611cea78a30779d116cc8e820d2f932)
I solemnly returned to the seeping stump and told what happened.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252024%2520SS%2F1StumpMain.jpg&hash=9a5347a93dbfc159bfc27ec38885baf6dc537016)
"I swear I thought he was dead!" the stump beseeched. "I would never call for the felling of another tree, unless to aid the forest."
"How could a tree hurt the forest?" I asked.
"Look at the tree to the east."
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252024%2520SS%2F4Specialtree.jpg&hash=cf77f808f2ac813caf0ffd89c9a909ce6b659bbd)
"See it's height? See how it's shadow covers the ground, impeding growth?" It gurgled.
Indeed I did. Shrubs scraped for what little light escaped the tree.
Once more my axe swung.
Once more a tree screamed.
Once more a tree fell.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252024%2520SS%2F5Specialtreefelled.jpg&hash=b213d4bc10059e45d583855076ddc053cba0c544)
Then I heard the cheering.
The shrubs were not shrubs at all.
They were Kudzu vines, now left to grow unfettered.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252024%2520SS%2F6Specialtreeweeds.jpg&hash=fe3422f68af16b614650aa71543e043b80806190)
I buried the axe into the cracked stump.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252024%2520SS%2F1StumpMain.jpg&hash=9a5347a93dbfc159bfc27ec38885baf6dc537016)
"You lied!" I cried. "That tree was keeping an invasive plant at bay."
"I have no eyes, I cannot see!" The stump gurgled through it's sap.
"I could only sense desperate life trying to grow.I could not know it was Kudzu. "
"But still now you see how all life in the forest depends on death."
"Knowing that will you aid me a final time?"
"I will fell no more trees." I replied.
"I would not ask you too." The seeping stump answered. "I sense a heavy rain will come in two days."
"Will you dig a trench to keep the rains from eroding my soil and washing me away?"
I dug into the night.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252024%2520SS%2F7dugtrench.jpg&hash=937d6af1c5b32ead04806297b51cc0a0cd28a6c7)
I was home when the rains came.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252024%2520SS%2F8Home.jpg&hash=fecf71f041103bbae9436b17e4b894f0071bf4f2)
I was home when the slope slipped.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252024%2520SS%2F9Slopeslipped.jpg&hash=adc7a50436a50f71233581a4f0998fdffcb2a300)
I was home when my village was buried.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252024%2520SS%2F9Buriedvillage.jpg&hash=f5b46ed65a0c11c7f749790a215dd4e26642b426)
I was alone when I dug myself out.
I trudged back up the mountain.
As I climbed, I could see the rent where the earth had slipped away.
I knew it well. I had spent the day digging there.
For a week I plotted while the stump's mad laughter rolled down the mountainside.
How do you punish a shatttered stump? It's dying on it's own.
Killing it would only ends it's misery sooner. That was the simple truth.
And then I knew how to make it suffer for the rest of it's twisted days.
It was early morning when I returned, but the stump was already awake and gibbering.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252024%2520SS%2F1StumpMain.jpg&hash=9a5347a93dbfc159bfc27ec38885baf6dc537016)
"Here to help?" It gurgled. "There is this pesky human who-"
"Enough!" I cried. "I will hear no more of your tricky talk."
"Oh? Then leave." it croaked.
"I will. I'll leave you alone on your mountainside."
"In your remaining time, as the rot that riddles you takes over, regard this sign and it's words that will serve as your epitaph."
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FSC4%2520Update%252024%2520SS%2FWoodensign.jpg&hash=4bb45b475133c0f4b992a72553a0eee307a771d0)
The End
As you can see, all the build up leads to a bad pun :D
I hope everyone enjoyed this little departure from the normal updates. For those interested can I ask you to take a look at the original story at Sketchy at Best (http://www.awebcomic.com/?webcomic_post=sticks-and-the-stump-pt-1) and take a look at Sticks Calhoun's other pages. (Warning he likes his puns!) If you do take a look, leave a comment and say that you came from here!
Many thanks to Calhoun for his Epic and everyone who views and comments here!
Next up: A scenic waterfall near Small Heath.
I liked the story and the pics but I did not get the joke. Probably my english isn't good enough. :P
:D Too funny my friend! :D
It's been a very enjoyable month with you in OSITM.
Great work all around, thanks.
Robin &apls
Nice story with great pictures there!
Looking forward to the waterfall... ;)
lol, that got me laughing ;D It was a great month in OSITM for you!
Your friend,
Jordan
Very nice, story and pictures fantastic!!!
Replies:RickD: Thanks! The joke is that 'Crack of sap' is a pun on 'Sack of Cr*p' (Sorry Mods ;) ) The author of story is from the US, which probably explains a lot ()stsfd()
Robin: Thank you sir! It's been quite an honour to be given an OSITM and I hope I've entertained for the last month! Thanks to you and the rest of the admin team!
bat: Thanks Bat, I hope I don't disappoint!
Jordan: Many thanks, I only wish I could take credit for the story, but I had to give credit where due :P
Tomas Neto: Cheers! Glad you enjoyed!

Yes indeed, very well done. The only thing I didn't like it's that sandstone pedmall area on pic #7, empty and a bit out of the context of the rural environment around. I definitely would have done something different there. Even a couple of tables and chairs, or a small 1 tile garden or some fruit stands would fit better on a different texture than the sandstone. &idea
Well done mate, The rural ambient it's amazing, great job !
I like the landscapes. &apls
Beautiful area! Great overview shot, which makes great use of the lense flare effect. I really like the way the terrain mod looks--what is it and where did you get it? I'd love to know. Out of curiousity, are Girafe's new trees likely to be making an appearance in St Andrews?
Looking forward to our upcoming visit to the mountains!
Salwarpe is a really beautiful rural town!
Fantastic work on the farms, too!
Looking forward to more wonderful pictures...
I love this small town, and the waterfall :o Great work
Replies:Tomas Neto: Thank you Thomas!
Aaron Graham: Many thanks sir!
Silvio: Thanks! I agree with you on the pedmall. I placed it as a kind of filler really, but never replaced it. In hind sight I should have left that shot out of the update &mmm I'll do a better job next time ::)
kelis: Thanks for your comment!
nbvc: Many thanks!
Noah: Thanks Noah! The terrain mod is Missouri Breaks (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=1635) and I replaced the water mod with the Marshy Water from Dogfight's water Mods (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=1387). As for Girafe's trees, I downloaded them recently so there is a good chance they'll appear ;) I like trees!

Today, as teased previously, we are taking a look at the road and rail way through the scenic Wickhamford valley:

The road and rail here are the only way to travel to the port town of West Heath, some 120 miles west of Salwarpe. These services are the last opportunity to refuel on the way:

The road heads down the mountain and across the river Wick. Time has been a bit tight, so apologies on the change from street to road here on the bridge ::)

Thanks for all your comments and views, hope everyone enjoyed this update!
Next up: Our first look at the coastal town of West Heath.
Looks great! I love the bridges and the flora, water, hills, and roads all look really nice &aplst
Nice bridges! I like the winding road although it could use some smooth curves ::)
Thats a gorgeous update. You did a really good job with both bridges :)
The brick bridge really has so much character, I loved it!
I also loved the way your river flows, its so Rocky Mountains-ish :)
Nice work with the scenic road, reminds me Andorra with the road following the river along the cliffs. I like too the river banks.
The road bridge is acceptable as there is no street bridges available to fit that scene.
Amazing update!!! Fantastic work my friend!!! &apls &apls
Great pictures of the bridge and river!
The valley is really beautiful!!
Very nice update!!
The street and brige are so real and the rail bridge very impressive &apls &apls
Great update mate, You did a great job here &apls &apls
It's a very nice update &apls &apls
Replies:Noah: Many thanks sir!
io_bg: Thank you! I agree on the curves issue. Sadly a limitation of Peg's road mod I've been using means that the NAM curves look out of place. However for the next update I'm making changes so I can use wide radius curves in future!
nedalezz: Cheers! I've added some photo's below which inspired me with these shots which you might like.
Silvio: Thanks Silvio, it is a shame I couldn't find a suitable street bridge, but as I mentioned in my reply to io_bg above, I'm changing the way I make my roads now to prevent this kind of thing!
Tomas Neto: Thanks Tomas!
bat: Thank you sir!
Kergelen: Many thanks!
kelis: Cheers!
supremec: Thank you!

I'm hard at work on the next update with no real teasers right now, so here are some photos I found which inspired the last update. I always look for real pictures to help make realistic environments:

First off my apologies for there being no update in so long, real life is very hectic at the moment and I have had very little motivation to work on West Heath recently. I'm looking to get a proper update out in the next fortnight at the most.
In the meantime here is picture I made ages ago and recently entered into the Picture Competition (more for a giggle than any serious intent to win, but I got a few votes all the same!)
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1127.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fl637%2FSnortingMoose%2FRandom%2520Junk%2FAnduin-1.jpg&hash=913cde92bfffdcacad1801209bc1c9d65eac4c1a)
All the best
Reikhardt
No worries on being busy lately, I've been struck with a moderate to severe case of RL myself recently, which I only anticipate getting worse for the next month! I look forward to the next update, but in the mean time what a lovely picture! I don't recall seeing it but wish I could vote for it! &apls
Fantastic image!!!
Replies:Noah: Damn that real life nonsense! Thanks for the vote of confidence, but I really did make that picture as a joke really, not any serious attempt at a good picture!
Tomas: Thank you sir! Please see above reply....

Today we'll take a first look at West Heath, a medium sized city on the coast. West Heath is notable for it's modest marina, historic buildings and bright nightlife. There is very little industry here, most people who live in West Heath are employed in the neighbouring town of Chelmarsh.

Next up: We're heading downtown!
Nice marina you have here, great work !
I just think that maybe you have a bit to much road & avenues in the city next to the port, but anyway this is great :)
Beautiful work. Love the marina and all the flora and beach plop that goes with it. :)

Amazing update!!! Awesome work!!! &apls
Good use of the marina set =)
Great location for a marina. Very nice.
A beautiful marina &apls
Great job with the marina area! &apls I really need to play around with those PEG CSK lots in Siilijoki. I also love how your forests look with just a touch of fall colors starting to show.
And St Andrews seemed a nice place to put post #1000 ;)
The more times I see the marina area, the more I like it. You have done a nice job on this one, and to me it seems very realistic. Now if i just had a house on that little island where I could sit on the porch and watch the ships sail out and back in. ;D
The marina is looking great, and I think you have done a wonderful job of placing everything into the landscape (which is also very well done here).
Top Marina!
The setting must be very popular with the rich Sims in their yachts!
Keep up the good work!

Noah: Congratulations on 1000 posts & thanks for using that landmark on my MD! I think the Marina lots are Peg's best work, the detail is perfect. The trees are Girafe's seasonal and evergreen oaks in the main. I was really trying to get that 'just turning to autumn' look so I'm glad you noticed :)
Shark7: Thank you! As with most of my work, this marina is based on a real one (sorry I don't have a copy of the picture I used). I always aim to make things look as real as the game allows.
kwakelaar: Many thanks! As I mentioned above, the landscaping was hard work and I was on the verge of giving up at one point, I just couldn't get it quite right....

And so to the city centre! The most densely built upon in the area plays home to the many trappings that accompany the marina and the people that are use it.

Thanks for viewing and for all your kind comments! Really makes some of the hard work more bearable!
Next up: The beach, and Battery Point lookout.
Hehe, finally I've caught the first reply onto a new update :D
It's , as usual very nice work, I especially like this block in pic #16 =)
Great work!
I went through all the pics two times wanting to find something that I didn't like......but I couldn't find anything.
Your transit layout works well, your chioce of custom content all fits together nicley and the overall feel I get is really good.
It was a pleasure sipping my morning coffee and going through your MD.
Robin
Another fantastic update!!!
Nice update !
I like the atmosphere in this city :) And the sandstone mod looks great here !
I also like the mall on picture 7, do you know where I can find it ?
Very nice town! The trees give the pictures a lot of texture.
I know it has been said a repeatedly - but not enough: this MD is amazing! The way you sculpt your terrain and towns is brilliant!
Incredibles pictures , beatiful city !
Replies:
Skimbo: Congratulations on being first :P Thanks for the kind words. That block looks even better at night, coming soon!
Robin: Glad I passed your critical gaze ;) Nothing like fresh coffee and a good MD!
Tomas Neto: Many thanks sir!
Benoit: Thank you! I'm really pleased with the sandstone sidewalks, I've been using Peg's dirt sidewalks up until now, but I needed something more 'urban' but not too much of a concrete hell! The mall is from Pegasus, but I couldn't find it when I looked earlier. It's possible I got it from the Stex, sorry I couldn't be more helpful....
sumwonyuno: Many thanks! I love Simfox & Girafe's trees, can't use them enough...
Riandomhan44: Thanks for using your first post to comment here!
ricardomiranda: Thank you sir!

For this update we'll have a look at the more scenic elements of the city, starting with the beach:

The beach is very pebbly with course sand and is not particularly popular with tourists:

The view of the beach and harbour for the residents here is spectacular and is a large contributor to the high property values here:

Despite the lack beach visitors, there is a small snack bar next to the beach:

More popular with tourists is Battery Point. Here an old water tower and a lookout platform overlooking the cliffside are the reward for a trek up the hill:

Next up: West Heath at night.
Awesome update again, and the effect of rain is perfect!!!
Especially the rural images are great.
You also have a good feeling how to present the images: further down they get emptier and emptier until there is only one thing visible in the last one. It's really a beautiful sequence.
Just stumbled upon your MD, and I am very impressed! Your updates are full of inspiring scenes. I really like the rock mod you're using, and I particularly like your skills with the MM ploppable rocks/flora. Everything looks very realistic!
Some fantastic update there!
The marina on the previous page is really great!
Also really nice pictures of the lighthouse!!!
Superb!
The realism you have going is great! Especially in image 3!
Pictures 8 to 11, really beautifull, a good detailed area &apls
Indeed really good work with plop items :)
My friend, I envy you.
These shores never came easy to me, your combination of rock mod and your own design just fits.
And I wish I had some inspiration for my own as you have - whenever I start the game I feel so empty.
Take care my friend!
Bernhard
Nice update !
I also love the rain effect :) Great work with the flora and with the old water tower on that cliff !
Again, I think you can improve the atmosphere of your cities with less roads. I'll take the exemple of picture 3 (Wich is a great picture !) : One road in front of the houses, one road behind, I think one of them is useless. This is just my point of view :)
Keep up the good work.
Astonishing work indeed! The lighthouse scene is simply fantastic. I wonder if at some time I will be able to create scenes like this!
Great pictures and excellent detailing. &apls

Tomas Neto: Many thanks!
FrankU: Many thanks. I like to show the area an item sits in to show how it fits in the city before zooming in to reveal the detail.
selles: Glad you liked it! The rock mod will be one from either this (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=2104) or this (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=2105). Both have some great rock textures in no matter what type of region you are making.
http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=2105: Thank you sir!
wallasey: Thanks! I'm quite pleased with how the beach turned out. The beach texture looks great on it's own and a few MM plops really make it look how I wanted it.
supremec: Many thanks!
Girafe: Couldn't do it without those fantastic trees :D
Bernhard: Thanks Uncle Nardo :P I think of what I would like to do on a city then I Google search for images and maps of the type of area I want to create. I then make a few drawings of them (just simple stuff, not great art!) and try to think how they can be done in SC4. By the time I fire SC4 up I already have a pretty good idea of what I'm making.
Benoit: Thanks sir! You're right about the roads I guess. I can see a time when I stop using roads and buildings in SC4 and just make landscapes, as I enjoy that the most!
Rady: Many thanks! The lighthouse is just a Peg lot I plopped (rocks and all) and I added a little mist effect in GIMP to make it look more interesting.
Raphael: Many thanks sir!
Next update in a few days time!
Spectacular update, nice job with the scenery!

Next up: Some random nature scenes I've been working on!
Fantastic night shots, possibly one of the best night imagery selections I've seen for a good while!
This update really showed how eclectic your building set really is. The mixture of Euro and US bonds well.
I really liked the wharf area and the church.
Fantastic 14 night shots of West Heath!
Wow, your use of MMPs in the last update was just phenomenal! &apls &apls Battery Point is my favorite area but the beach looks very nice as well. More recently, great job with the night views of the area
Fantastic updates.
Great update!!! Very nice!!!
Great night shots, nice job you have here Reikhardt
The photo editing and the road lights makes a really spooky environment ???
First off, my sincere apologies for the lack of updates, I was called up to jury service for nearly 3 months and I have had very little time for gaming. Hope to get back to more regular releases in the near future!

wallasey: Thank you for the kind comments! I was really pleased with how the night shots came out, It took quite a while of playing with mods to get that look.

Tomas Neto: Many thanks!
ricardomiranda: Thank you!
Elias: Thanks! I haven't edited the photos too much, that blue/ green tinge to the lights is actually from a mod, although you'll have to excuse me not remembering off the top of my head which one, I have been away for some time ;)
Not a proper update I'm afraid, just a small collection of a very unfinished area I was experimenting with. In no way are these finished standard shots, so please be kind ::)

Nice update Reikhardt! I was here earlier but was in a hurry so didn't have a chance to leave a comment.
Really nice job with the waterfalls again, they always remind me of a place in Siilijoki that's in need of your expertise ;) Quite the interesting terrain mod as well and a very nice job with the MMPs. I'm glad to here St Andrews should be seeing regular updates soon!
