does anyone have a tutorial on this or could someone explain what is required to make a terrain mod, not a simple one texture fits all job, i mean like cycledogg does it...
There is/was one at Simtropolis....
let me check my bookmarks....
Found it. It still there: Make your Own Custom Terrain! (http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=41&threadid=56585&enterthread=y)
Was thinking of making one myself, but has not come around to it, yet. Probably never will. :P
thankyou very much vester... i never thought of checking somewhere that obvious, i guessed it wouldnt be there as cycledogg is still the only guy doing it...

Well, looking at that tutorial, it's mainly boring number work, rather than something "graphic", like BATting or lot editing, so I'm not that surprised that only a minority actually played around with it. ;)
Silvio (Rayden) does it, and he's good at it, too, I'm pretty sure. Unless I'm mistaken, anybody who's done an Artic Terrain mod has done it (Jan(swamper77), Teirusu, jeronij).

p.s.: I've moved this out of the Brainbusters! topic, as it is something that we know how to do, although it isn't a light evening's work.
Well, I haven't done a terrain mod from scratch, my only concern was lowering the snow line. When I used to have the Columbus terrain modds installed, I used that tutorial to learn how to lower that line. At the beginning it took me a while to understand it, but then at the end I felt rather easy at it and used it quite a lot on my MD/CJ Els Pirineus. That was before someone cracked the cheats dll file or my good friend beskhu3epnm thought me how to easily aquire that by changing only one line on the terrain examplar. The problem with that tutorial was that it was only good for default Maxis textures, plus Columbus and Teirusu's textures. For the new terrain mods like Italia or Meadow's, that was not possible due to the diffrent texture Ids used on them. I've tried to have Cycledogg to help me out, but this is what I had been answered:
"Hi Rayden
Sorry for the late reply. Haven't been to this site for a while (almost a month!) I can't think of any easy way to do what you are asking. You can use ilive to look at the textures in the texture file(s) you had to install before using the mod. There are a lot of them.
A much easier way to drop the snow level is to change the value of the MaxTerrainHeight property. Lower the value by about three times the amount you want to drop the snow. So, for example, if you want to lower the snow 100 meters, reduce the MaxTerrainHeight value 300 meters. The MaxTerrainHeight property is located in the main terrain exemplar in the terrain mod. Hope this helps.

So, I'm affraid, and until Cycledogg releases another tutorial, that one won't be of much use to you. I'm affraid as well, that I won't be much of a help either &mmm
If you plan to follow that tutorial, you will need this: http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=12555 ;)
Btw, having Cycledogg's texture packs, it is really easy to create your own terrain files. You only have to change a "few" texture instances.
im really not making much headway with this, maybe im being thick, but i can seem to decipher how to make entirely new terrain mods.... like from scratch.....
that tutorial is very instructive rather than explanatory.... im not good at things like that i want to understand what he's doing and why he's doing it... can anyone please write a newer updated tutorial... i know its alot to ask, but i think it would really benefit the community...
