Title: Help on Installing SC4/RH
Post by: cogeo on October 23, 2011, 06:17:54 AM
Hi all,

After experiencing technical problems with my computer, I had to re-install the OS. Consequently I need to re-install SC4. Fortunately I have backed-up my plugins + regions installation.

Is there some quide (alternatively could one give some instructions) on how to install the game from scratch, ie SC4 + RH (no deluxe) plus all needed tools and addons (BAT, nightlighting update, LE, PM, the reader)? More specifically the order these need to be installed. Also, should I install the SC4 (Original) Update, before installing RH?

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

hi Cogeo,

install the base game, and Rh first then update with the maxis tools found here http://www.SC4devotion.com/SC4D_Maxis_files.html these files include the lot editor and bat make sure gmax is installed before installing the bat. I have all the plug ins in a file, but you can also go to  https://public.me.com/zelgadis to get the maxis landmarks. Do you have the lex DVD ? If not everything else can be found here at devotion ( ilive reader, terraformer ......) just type it in the search bar at the exchange .

hope this helps, let me know if you need more info,

Steel (Steve)

Many thanks Steel!

Finally I installed everything, in the following order:
- SC4 Original
- SC4 SKU2-TO-P2 Update (maybe this wasn't necessary as everything installed by this update is subsequently overwritten by later versions & updates)
- SC4 RH
- SC4 SKU2_TO_P1_B638 Update
- Lot Editor & BldgProps for SC4 & RH (1 & 2)
- Plugin Manager
- Gmax
- SC4 Update for BAT (this indeed had to installed last, as it is actually the 640 update)
- BAT

Also made a virtual CD (copy of the RH one) and put the physical one back into its case.  ;)

Not sure if this is the correct order, but as it seems it is. File simcity_1.dat has a Modified Date of 22/01/2004 and a file size of 144,589,077 bytes, instead of the 144,596,245 suggested in the 638 installation notes. I guess the 640 installation changed it (didn't check immediately after installing 638, stupid me). Could someone pls confirm the above size?  "$Deal"$ (this is BEFORE merging into CAM and/or other RCI mods).

Thanks again

Cogeo,

Sounds about right. mine is different cause I have deluxe and not sure if things were merged. I recently had to do the same thing re install from scratch. still getting plug ins (nam, cam and so on) But what I did is backep up the c directory maxis folder and the my docs simcity folder befor I installed any plug ins other that the maxis ones (landmarks) and named it fresh install. So if ever you need to re install the game you have all the files available the sk 1 the lot editor and bat already to go . I also booked marked that link to maxis tools on the site here for reference in case I ever need them again.

By ther way your all your models and props are awsome. Not sure if you have the lex dvd or not but it really helps with all the dependancies and add ons for sc 4, I have a 5 gig plugins folder right now.

I have a feeling I will be needing to re-install SC4 as well. Can I just rename my plugins folder something else or move the folder until I have the game re-installed? Also, for some reason the game is set for compatibility mode with Windows 95, even though I have always used Windows 98 and SC4 was issued after that. Is there a reason Windows 95 was chosen?

MaryBeth (Grneyes), Hi!  There is no greater feeling than to log on to SC4D and see a post from a friend who hasn't been on in quite a while.  Happy holidays to you!

Your "My Documents" SC4 Plugins folder is completely independent of any reinstall of the game.  You should temporarily move it elsewhere to protect it during the reload, though, as I believe a fresh reinstallation will start you out with an empty one.  I've never tested to see what would happen if you would leave it- the couple of times I've reinstalled SC4 over the years I've removed all the old install, to include the folders in both SC4 directories ("Program Files" and "My Documents").  In any event, all you do after the reinstall is move your Plugins folder back into the "My Documents" SC4 directory folder and you will be good to go.

Don't forget, per cogeo's post below, to install the updates, which are available here.[linkie] (http://www.sc4devotion.com/SC4D_Maxis_files.html).

As for compatibility mode with Win95?  I don't think this is needed (and had no idea you could even still run anything compatible with Win95).  SC4 was released in 2003, so Win2000 and WinXP were out and pretty well established.  Vista didn't come out 'til 2007, so if you are still running Win98 you can expect Microsoft agents to storm your house any minute now to confiscate OS software that isn't making the company any money.

Good luck in any event- let me know if you have any issues.  Oh, and see you around 3RR, too.

Thanks, David! Good to see you too! Life has been hectic (new job (soon to be newer job with regular daytime hours), new city, new state, new marriage) so game playing has fallen by the wayside this past year. Hope everything is going well with you and your family.

Okay for some reason, won't let me edit my post. I am running Windows XP, why I said 98, I have no idea.....The Windows 95 thing I brought up because of all the mods you can make when you right click on the icon (windowed mode, etc). I didn't know anything about it either so I'm surprised it picked Windows 95 to run as.  ()what()
