Box/divided volleyball interchanges create a wide median between the carriageways of the two interchanging highways, using this space for connecting ramps. It's an easy and cost-effective way to connect RHWs, but has a considerable footprint and a large amount of unusable space in the centre.
The centre of the interchange resemble a quadrilateral design, usually a square, which makes it look like a box. That's where the name for this junction came from.
