Wasn't there a tutorial somewhere about how to blend in the various shades canal water with the "sea" water? Or at least make the transition from one to the other look more natural?
EDIT: Edited title of thread to call attention to what MaryBeth is specifically looking for. -de
Well... Ennedi has one here: SC4 Landscape Designers Studio Development Thread (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=7959.msg262020#msg262020)
...as well Paeng has a nice one over at Simpeg as well: Ploppable Water and Waves (http://www.simpeg.com/forum/index.php?action=articles;sa=view;article=70)
Hope this helps.
EDIT: Tamara, this isn't the first time I've seen you be helpful to folks asking for assistance here. A K-point for those times, and for being such a nice person generally. -de
The trick, MaryBeth, is using a water texture that harmonizes with your canal water, then monkeying a bit with the game's water transparency settings. At least that's how I always did it. Oh, and lot of rocks and underwater flora to help make the visual transition more smooth.
I think I've seen a thread along this line, too. I'll keep my eyes out.

I also tried placing locks and overflows...that kind of works if the canal is higher than the sea water.
