Title: Sum Ting Wong (SG) is *killing* my Mayor Rating
Post by: Wodong on July 27, 2012, 05:55:37 AM
I've gotten back into SC4 after a long break, and loving it every bit as much as I did before.  Except, well for whatever reason SimGoober's Sum Ting Wong lot is destroying my mayor rating.  Any time I have a 1x2 or 1x3 lot I get Sum Ting Wong as far as the eye can see.  Literal blocks of 10-20 of it, and it triggers riots like nuts.

I'm sure it's part of one of the SG packs, but I can't seem to figure out which one.  I'd love to just strip it out, because it's really a case of one bad apple--actually I like it in moderation, but not when I have half a bajillion of them sprouting up in my future commercial downtown and destroying MR on any residentials remotely near it.  I have NOT installed the SG Commercial Lots Adult pack.  Playing with CAM, so I don't want to just randomly fiddle with things and then make CAM not work again, I just got it working right.

Any help, insights, anything?  Much appreciated and many thanks in advance!

IIRC, this is one of SG's NIMBY lots that have a negative effect on land value and desirability.  Best thing you can do to offset these is after you have the one you want, make it historical, then bulldoze the rest and put a park or two in the area, which will counter the NIMBY effect.  Also, increasing education levels will help fix the over-abundance of these lots.

Something you can try at least.

Shark recalls correctly. Stevies XXX Video is another one too. I've had riots sprout up when a group of those grow while I'm working on another sector and not watching.   :D

Yup, I've been using ye olde bulldozer on them mercilessly.  After bulldozing the same lot eight or nine times, well honestly I'm just tired of zoning 1x1 commercial so I don't have to pause the game every ten seconds to 'doze the latest crop.  I know that STW is a NIMBY lot, and it was amusing until it became THE lot that springs up in my low education, low wealth cities.

Sadly it's not an individual lot in my plug-ins folder, but hidden in one of the packs.  I'm suspecting the small commercial lots pack, and really really wish it had only been included in the NIMBY adult lots pack.  I need a few oppressed cities to supply my cheap labor for dirty industry, but my bloody sims are rising up against me!  :D  I've been considering installing the NIMBY pack anyway, if nothing else I'll have a variety of MR killers instead of the aggressive franchising of Sum Ting Wong.

I do like the NIMBYs, they're pretty clever and fun (and realistic) to have a few of them scattered around (good lawd, I'm staying in one of Shanghai's many "iffy" districts as I type!), but I do wish they were ploppables instead of growables.

Still a few parks should offset it some without having to raise the education level.  Also you might try putting a small landmark nearby. And yep, I've done the bulldoze a dozen times thing myself, so when something I like finally does grow, I 'Make Historical' on it quick.

I wish I hadn't destroyed the region that had the city with the problem so I could share a pic.  I had lots of parks, two large parks wide between the residential and the commercial NIMBYs.  Probably I had 12 parks, but I tell ya, the sheer concentrated power of a commercial block of Sum Ting Wong overpowered them like nothing short of toxic waste.

I *have* noticed that they only seem to be a problem in my planned cities, and not the organic ones.  Which is unfortunate, but at least it's just mildly irritating.  I did happen to locate the .dat file where I *thought* all the Sum Ting Wong lots were located, but even after deleting them all, I still got STM cropping up in force in my test city.  I even took out all the Wong Hung Long lots to be sure.  I don't dare fiddle with the model .dat, for fear of breaking something (again).  Yeah, uh no.  Oh well.  Now I just accept that my stupid sims will have to travel across city tiles to get to a store.  ()flamdev()

You can use iLives reader to change the growth stage to 0xFF ... Save it and it will never grow.

Alternate method if you don't use the reader is to use the Maxis lot editor. Change the minimum slope to 75 and the maximum slope to 80 (or something similar). Save and move the improved lot to a ZZZ_folder. It will be an impossible slope for the lot to grow on thereafter.

Alternative to a park is the use of police stations. This can increase the value of the commercial zone and another/better commercial building will take the place of Mr Wong's joint.

Good Luck
