Title: Sudden Valley Terrain Mod Problem
Post by: simdaft on January 19, 2013, 11:59:44 AM
I hope I am in the right place for posting this request for help.

I love the look of the Sudden Valley Terrain Mod and downloaded it and the Sudden Valley texture pack. Unfortunately, when I tried to open a new city map it would appear to load but then crash to the desktop after a few seconds. I worked my way through the plugin folder and narrowed it down to the terrain mod. I took out the previous terrain mod that I had installed to ensure that there would be no confliction. I would love to use this mod but don't know what to do next.

Can anyone help. I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks

A crash upon opening a city usually indicates missing terrain textures. Are you sure you have all the required dependencies for the mod, installed correctly?

Cheers

Are you running your in software or hardware rendering??because i suppose the mod is for hardware rendering...or do you still have older textures (like from a previous terrain mod) in your plugins folder???
check it out!
hope this helps

Hi Swordmaster. Thanks for your advice. I downloaded the required files. I have also tried the Columbus Mod and downloaded the dependencies for that too and the very same thing happened so I have no idea what is causing the problem. I have now removed the Columbus mod.

I hope you get this reply as I have trouble trying to make out the verification letters for posting.

Hi Gugu3

I removed the older files so that there would be no conflict. But I am now wondering about the hardware/software that you mention. I had previously been using hardware rendering and have suffered a lot of crashes to the desktop and read that some people find it better to use software and so I changed to that and it stopped all the crashes and lagging (until now that is). I will go back to hardware and try Sudden Valley Terrain Mod with that setting. Thanks

Simdaft,

Sorry to hear you're having issues but hopefully I can help you fix the problem without causing too much digging through your plugins:

The mod does require hardware rendering to display high-resolution textures, so as you'd mentioned you were not using hardware rendering previously I'd say this is a likely culprit.

The only other thing that should potentially cause a crash to desktop would be if you did not have the dependency (Sudden Valley Texure Pack) in your plugins folder.

Having multiple terrain mods in your plugin folder should not cause a crash, it would merely cause whichever of the duplicated files (the terrain INIs and exemplars) that loaded last in the load order to be the one that displayed when you open a city.

Frankly the ONLY thing that should cause a CTD with this type of mod is a missing texture or graphics setting (hardware v. software rendering issue).  Since the mods Terrain INI refers to the necessary textures by their IDs, if the texture pack isn't installed then that will cause the game to crash on load when it looks for the texture but doesnt find it.

All of the other files in the mod are merely replacements of other core-MAXIS exemplars so they're just replacing existing files you already have in your game each time upon load.  If those files were missing MAXIS would simply load the regular MAXIS terrain files instead.

Hope this helps and let me know if you get your issue resolved!

Daniel

Hi Gugu3 and Gobias.

I changed the setting from software to hardware and it works. What a great mod the Sudden Valley is. Really natural and realistic. Thanks for all the help and assistance. &apls
