Title: Game crashes to desktop
Post by: SimEurocat on February 27, 2013, 09:29:24 AM
At one time, I found a thread that talked about game crashes and why they happen, but I can't seem to find it again. Now I am having trouble with this happening and haven't been able to find out why. Somewhere I read that it may not be a duplication of plugin content, but I haven't changed anything else in the game.

Any ideas what might be happening or can you direct me to a good thread for this?

thanks

Hm yeah, there're a number of things which make the game crash to desktop. Without more information it's hard to tell what caused yours to do so. Please provide more details, like when exactly the ctd occurs, if you're sure the contents of your plugins hasn't changed recently, what terrain mod you use (if any), if you use hardware or software mode, wasn't it an accidental TE/puzzle piece crash, etc.

I'm using the ENN mountain slope mod. I wish I could narrow it down to doing something (the same thing) and then I get the ctd. It seems to be different each time. I may be placing a road, zoning for something or placing trees. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the ctd. I moved the plugins folder from the Programs Folder to the user folder, ran the cleanitol tool and I haven't had a crash yet. Maybe there was something that was causing the issue that I am not aware of. I will let everyone know what happens.

First thing we need to know is if this happens in a new city or in an existing one. Apparently it's also not on entering a city but while you're playing it. Does the simulation run?

This happened just now again. I was just placing some zones and ctd occurred. Simulation runs fine and the city that I am working on I have been working on for some time, so I don't think that it is a city or region issue.

Hmmm...it happens when running the simulation after you zone? That is the same issue I recently had. There could be a problem with one or more of the growable lots in your plugins folder.  That was the issue for me. I'm lucky because I already knew the culprits were lots that "I" created and/or edited because it didn't start happening until I added them to my plugins, therefore I only had to sift through one folder. I'm not really knowledgeable on the perimeters at which the game loads plugin objects, but I'm guessing that the reason you're able to enter the city with an iffy lot is because the game isn't running the process of deciding what buildings to grow at start-up, just loading information. An incompatible exemplar property or properties could be causing the crash...but like I said, I'm a blockhead, not an expert on such matters.

Did you add "ANYTHING" to your plugins folder prior to the crashes occurring?

What are your system specs? I had issues on my new Win 7 64bit machine, until I set the CPU count to 1.

adding the following switch to your shortcut

-CPUCount:1

worked for me.

medit84truth:
I have recently got back into SC4 and I have been downloading a lot of things, but never something that I have made my self. I will have to go through my plugins and check the compatibility, but I thoguht I was pretty careful when putting them in my plugins folder.

Diggis:
It is an older laptop with Vista Business (64-bit) on it.

Processor: Intel Core Dou 2 with a T5800@ 2.00 Ghz
RAM: 4.00 GB

I have not tried the CPU count thing, but I will give it a try and see what happens.

I really hope you find your cure. I have done SC4 on various op's, except the 8th, but I have not altered the CPU thing, I still feel it won't be The fix, as a crash is always prone, in more ways than one. More than two of the issues mentioned here have turned out to be my own experience.

You mentioned something about you were zoning a certain spot? There is such a thing as a certain part of the region being compromised that it causes CTD, I don't have a name for that diagnosis, but when it happened to me, I was like forget it, and redid the whole region, after I got to the realization that area had problems. As everyone knows, there is all kinds of motive to what can cause a crash, so you can be careful as much as you want, but if everyone really was in control, than none of us would get into a crash.

Medit does make some strong points though, it's just finding the cause is another story.
