Title: New CAM Starter Pack?
Post by: Shadowstrike on July 17, 2014, 05:01:22 PM
I hope I'm not stepping on any toes in proposing this, but has there been any attempts to make a new CAM Starter Pack?

To really make use of CAM's new stages (above stage 10 or 11, to which the existing Maxis BATs have been extended to cover), one needs to download additional CAMeLots. The original Starter Packs tried to simplify this by making a collection of CAMeLots, but as we all know, it takes quite a lot of time to install them, because they link to a lot of dependencies. More recently, you have efforts like Tarkus' post (http://simtarkus.wordpress.com/2014/01/28/building-up-a-plugins-folder-of-camelots-the-quick-and-legitimate-way/), which summarizes packages of CAMeLots that can be downloaded together, and link back to a more limited set of dependencies (via the LEX). And of course, there is always the option to download individual CAMeLots or even non-CAM BATs and convert them using the PIM-X tool.

The problem remains though, that one needs to download and install a significant number of different files to be able to make extensive use of CAM's upper growth stages. Once you've gotten into using the CAM, it can be a lot of fun to search through the LEX or STEX looking for cool BATs to add to your cities. But when you're just starting out, it can be daunting to know that you have to install so many different things just to get this mod to run (which I suspect may keep a lot of people away from the CAM). If we could put together a new Starter Pack - a single download that includes a set of CAMeLots and their dependencies covering most of the new high-growth stages across all the zone types and wealth levels - it would make it easier for new players to start using the CAM, and hopefully avoid just torrenting plugin directories, or avoiding the mod altogether.

As far as I can tell, to make such a pack, we would need to 1) figure out a set of CAMeLots or convertible BATs to include (ideally ones that don't have dependencies), 2) get permission from the creators of those CAMeLots/BATs, and 3) convert the ones that aren't already CAMpatible.

It's been a while since the last time I play SC4,and now the development of the new buildings were so WOW!  &apls &apls &apls
I agree with what you explain.
I do install the CAM the last time I play, but now there is so many many many new buildings I've seen in STEX and I'm uncertain whether is it CAMpatible or not.
It's just confusing, I really wanted to play SC4 again, because the new SC2013 were not as enjoyable as SC4.
And then what is a PIMX tool actually do?
Is there any reference you could tell me? Or maybe you wanted to explain it to me  ;D :D

I think that you will find more CAMpatible buildings on the LEX than on the STEX simply because the CAM is only available on the LEX. So, search here on the LEX and you'll find all the CAMpatible lots your heart desires.
