I cant figure out how to configure gmax to look the way I want...
See, I had to reinstall. Unfortunately now there are all these strange diagonal lines on extruded shapes that are getting in my way. They are those things you see sometimes when your dealing with textures in ilive on vehicle models. Anyways, they only appeared now and I cant seem to turn the freaking things off
Sorry Zaph...missed this post. Can you provide a screenie?
sure
Here I just made a square with a hole in it, then extruded it.

lol...those diagonal lines are the segment lines...each vertex (point) connects to another and when you did a boolean operation it connects the two corresponding points together from the two shapes to make the ¨cutout¨. If you really can't live with seeing them, switch to outline view (right click the view name in the top left corner), but they are normal.
Im having a hard time finding "outline", even though im doing what you said
I figured it was normal, but its hard to work with and looks bizarre on side views, since not all the lines are displaying.
Is this configuration normal for other people using BAT:

Sorry, that should be ¨bounding box¨ and yep, that's normal.
ugh if thats normal, screw it. Why cant it at least display the actual shapes along with the vertex links?
also, on bounding box mode, the lines flicker and disappear or nothing appears at all....could this be a glitch?
Are you on an odd screen resolution? There should be no flicker at all.
That should be a rule that the person dispensing advice himself knows what he is talking about. However some rush to "help" and spreading false information and just plain rubbish trying to impress some novice and acquire "reputation". Sometimes those get, I guess; "drunk" on their fame and popularity and revert to plain verbal thuggery trying to guard their place in that spotlight.
And that's what we see here. "Advise" has no merit what so ever. Either Callgrafx didn't read what Zaphod was saying, or just didn't know what the question is all about. If so why is such a rush to post? Why to spread false information? And then try to cover trucks with "that's normal".
I guess I'll get another advice to "wipe rabid foam from my lips". Well, ok when one has nothing else to say but is an expert in "rabid foam" what shall we expect?
Zaphod:
Your problem is most probably caused by settings of you videocard driver. Most probably presently it's set to "Display Wireframe Objects Using Triangle Strips". It is an option but that is NOT normal. By default it is usually disabled. And yes it is very annoying when it adds huge amount of extra lines confusing user and overtaxing driver.
To restore NORMAL display go to Customize->Preferences. There in Viewport click on Configure Driver button.

un-tick options (3).
This is how your viewport appear before you do it

And this is how they should look after:

Grow up... ::) I seek neither fame or popularity, what advice I give I base on information provided, I do not leap to conclusions, unlike some. If I was wrong, I freely admit it..I never said I was right (I'm not the egomaniac) just that I have never had need to change those settings and have, in the last 15 years of 3D modelling, accepted them as the norm.
You really need to re-read your posts here and elsewhere as you really do have an abrasive, ¨know it all¨ manner...cease treating people like idiots and dispensing advice as if you wrote the book on 3D modelling, it's quite tiresome.

To restore NORMAL display go to Customize->Preferences. There in Viewport click on Configure Driver button.
The reason for having "Customize" and "Preferences" is that there is no "NORMAL" way of doing it. The settings show by you are settings which suit you, not everyone.

Awesome, thanks!
it works fine now
Callgrafx:
if you want to help people instead of just getting you message count up, either post something you know for sure, of (may as well) check the method you suggest, as not to further confuse people who feel lost already. That is, of course if you have any respect to people.
Information give didn't in any way suggest those "solutions" you've offered, and if you really been doing 3d for 15 years it is very, very strange that you don't see it.
I didn't write any book on 3d, but I think you should really read one...
Sarjm
"Normal" could be used to denote the default setting on most systems. But true that there are so many settings and ways in 3d that one should really speak of RIGHT way to do things...
Simfox....cease this childish, stupid and extremely petty behaviour. It's not conducive to the atmosphere of this site and certainly does you no favours. Also, I would strongly advise you not to attempt to call me a liar....I have neither the inclination or the time to justify or explain my experience with 3D modelling to you.
in 3dsmax is there away to stop large shape edges from disappearing when you zoom in. i know it has something to do with scale to prevent you selecting the wrong object but i would still like it to be visible....
