Hey guys, im having a bit of a problem making a doorframe for a small tutorial lot im following fromthe STomnibus. After creating the rectangle for the doorframe, and checking "display mesh" and "generate mapping coords", it tells me i need to "collapse to editable mesh". The closest button i can find to do that says just "collapse", but even when i have my frame selected, i still cant click on it, so i select "element". i then proceed to "hide mesh", then immediately after that, i get a box with "assertion failed" followed by Infile:\MaxSDK\include\tab.h
Line:117
then, gmax shuts down!!!! ()what() ()what() ()what()
please can someone offer a pointer or two? (or twenty $%Grinno$%)
Sounds like you are trying to make a doorframe just with (sp)lines, if so you will need to add a modifier called "Edit spline" after checking the boxes for "display mesh" and "generate mapping coords". This is a way to add thickness to a simple line and let it show up in the render.
However if you are using spline and extrude to make a doorframe you do not need to check the boxes for "Display mesh" and "Generate mapping coords".
I am a bit uncertain why this is not working for you as it should be quite straight forward, are you adding any other modifers to your stack?
Which tutorial are you using?
its the tutorial on the stomnibus by philippbo called BAT Essentials. Its basically just a simple 2x1 commercial office model. it doesnt mention anything about using an edit spline modifier at this point. do you mean extruding?
Update: The mesh breaks down into splines ok, its just that GMAX closes as soon as i hide them. strange piece of kit indeed.
I have just tried to do the same as you on my pc.
Create "Rectangle", checking boxes for "Display mesh" and "Generate mapping coords", then adding an "Edit Mesh" modifier.
In the roll out checking "Element" on the Edit Mesh and then "Collapse", and nothing happens really. I can also "Hide Mesh", but again nothing happens.
It is strange that gmax asks you to collapse to Editable Mesh in the first place. As far as I know this means adding a Edit Mesh modifier and not actually collapsing the Mesh.
So far the only thing I can think of is that there is something wrong with your installation of gmax, as I can not recreate the problem on my computer.
Maybe you can post a screenie with exactly what you do and show exactly which commands you have been using.
I honestly don't have a clue why this happens to you. I started out with the same tutorial and I did not experience these kind of problems.
Sorry I can't really help you any futher.
i give up, gonna reinstall.
where do you get gmax again?
thanks for all your very patient help kwakelaar  &apls
EDIT: I just reinstalled gmax, but the same problem occurs. Looks like im limited to poor quality buildings with holes for windows. sigh... :'( :'(
Don't give up yet, maybe there is someone else with the same kind of problem. Try looking around on the forums here or on Simtropolis, or maybe try to search the internet about gmax.
