This is the topic completely dedicated to the Zeppeion Megaron. BAT developpement, prop selection and creation, lot developpent, but also comments and suggestions for the BAT and the lot.
Once more, I dare to hope that the BAT will be finished during February.. About the lot, it's another question :-[
A few historical details about it:
The cornerstone was laid on January 20th,1874. In the mid- 1880s, Konstantinos Zappas (project owner) assigned Danish architect Theophil Hansen to create a new design (University of Athens, Kapodistrian library), even if it meant sacrificing the walls that had already been built. The building was inaugurated with all due pomp on October 20th,1888.
The Zappeion Exhibition Hall was the first building in the world to be constructed in order to serve Olympic needs. Its architecture is in the neoclassical order, with a Corinthian portico, and an organization of volumes that is fully in harmony with the intention for which it was built.
The building has had a turbulent history, but no less so than the uses to which it was put. Rarely did it fulfill its initial purpose, and indeed it remained closed and deserted for years.
During the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, the fencing events were hosted in its circular hall; during the second International Olympic Games in 1906, the lack of infrastructure and facilities led to its being used as the "Olympic Village". In addition, starting in 1936 and for the next 40 years, it hosted the country's first state radio station. In 1940 it was converted into a hospital; the following year it was commandeered by the German occupation army after which it became a storehouse and later a barracks (1944). It was even bombed during the same year.
After the war, the possibility was discussed of demolishing it. Fortunately, in 1960, general repairs were carried out under the supervision of architects A. Ploumistos and F. Panagiotopoulos. The most recent renovation was carried out in view of the Olympic Games in 2004.
The Zappeion Exhibition Hall has been witness to the history of Athens for the past 120 years; it has been a key building at some of the nation's most significant moments, and has always been integrally linked to the Olympic Movement. Even though its uses were varied, it finally became a landmark in the Greek capital, in this way fulfilling its donor's initial wishes, albeit slightly modified.

Well actualy that's not true, I allready finished the façade and the outer side of the circular court. I was just wondering if I will make the windows that normaly are to the walls arround the portico, especialy if I BAT the trees (Cypres) that are today present in front of them.
Come have a look tomorrow for an update.
here is the update promissed

I'm not very satisfied with the roof texture though...
And I think i won't do the windows to the sides...
Looking at the pics maybe you can try a Roof Texture from the CD Lots.Thanx for the update. :)
Don't know if you have them already, but here's a couple Micklebear made available:

Hope that helps
This is one of my favourite buildings in Athens - I will follow this anxiously :)
Nice pictures and building!
I actualy have dozens of roof tile textures, some better than thisone, but the problem is to make them look right ingame.. So, I'm still trying, looking arround :-\ I will find something eventualy!
Thanks for the comments!
It's starting to look like something. :P
Hmmm... this should be one mother of a BAT when it's finished.
I'm already thinking of ways to use this...
It's looking really good! The details are beautiful. :)
My suggestions, is to add in some horizontal bands of value into the column texture to make it look like separate blocks. If you look closely in the photo they should be there. The horizontal bands should be very subtle if you choose to add them. Also, there seems to be some uvw mapping problems with the cornice texture, where the texture tiles strangely. You probably already see that though.
Knowing what you've made before, this will turn out great. :)
Can't wait to follow your progress!! &apls
wow! great job...I love that wall texture...
hey everyone, sory for the long abscence, i have lots of work with my studies, end of semester here, and i work at 100% on my architecture project.. see, it's 5 in the morning and i'm still here for those stupid plans to be finished... i will finish everything in exactly one week when I will have my project evaluated in public.
It's an interesting suggestion the idea of vertical bands to the pillasters, but i see those as a very subtil degrade from the edges to the center.. or maybe also a darker and very thin just to the edges.. i have to run some tests, it's easy. I know also about the corniche, it's not wanted but didn't mke a texture yet to aply there, not before i finish the whole roof of this central structure. Just in order not to have any tint conflicts. But i will change it eventualy.
That's for now, see you in a week!
N
I love the project, It's such a sober building, yet bright and interesting in shape. Can't wait to see the progress.
For now, good luck with school
Amazing detail on the columns! I look forward to more
You know, I admire your building style, probably it's often just the big amount of time you spend which makes every building of yours extraordinarily great looking.
And good luck with the archtecture project, I keep my fingers crossed for you that everything turns out good
I like really a lot your creations Swi21! It is an exceptional work.

I agree Swi! I'm "lucky" because I do speak English... I'm moderately adequate at Spanish, but I couldn't be nearly as precise if I had to comment completely in Spanish!!
i'm sure you can find spanish speaking members here! You can even bring some new members.. you also could make your own thread in spanish and discuss stuff you see in other threads... that would be a great add!
I'm sure he would, not only spanish speaking members where I include myself but real spanish members. The founder of this site, for instance, as Jeronij is spanish, Fukuda as well, and I'm sure there is maybe another one that I can't remember right now.
There is a board in the Forums called International Support.....just in case you didn't see it ;D
I agree with you ( I can understand a bit of french) about the english limitations for the non english members , I am one of them ¡¡¡, but the english should be keeped as the main language for the other forums, so everybody can understand everything.
I dont mean a non english post is a problem, but it may become a problem if the topic becomes unreadable for other members.
Thanks for your understanding.
Back to topic: Impatiently waiting for some more development pics.... ;)
Just to end this subject out of place, here is the forum for french speakers: http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=293.0
In a few days i will post a new update of the Zappeion!
Today's update: the internal court is done....
Still not tried a new roof texture...
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv499%2Fswi21%2FZappeion%2FUpdate4.jpg&hash=87161ad927c8f234f2a55fc34cd115e6caef4891)
&apls Wonderful progress! And I like the roof texture as it is, matches the Kapod University. But the center doesn't look that good though.
excellent work, i love the columns.
nice...I agree that the roof texture doesn't look that bad from here.
Some good progress.
I have to agee. Maybe work a little with the uvw-map on the round part of the roof.
Yeah i will but once i will get the goodone! For the moment another question came and i don't know what to decide...
Metal?
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv499%2Fswi21%2FZappeion%2FUpdate5_1.jpg&hash=eaacdd8a7630185c74bebbd51009d1e818d2e002)
or tiles?
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv499%2Fswi21%2FZappeion%2FUpdate5_2.jpg&hash=6bc212999891509e2efc3398d5277adf0676f3ce)
First off, great to see an update of this! Your modelling is just great.
And I agree with Vester, Yoder and Debussyman, that roof texture isn't bad actually and would fit other work of you very well.
On the other hand, metal would give it a more renewed/rebuilt look, which would fit this building very well also IMO.
It's really hard to tell which is better, but for the moment, I'd go for the metal one.
here is the central part, done (of course, the tiles of the roof will certenly change, i'm trying a new texture making program now...)
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg238.imageshack.us%2Fimg238%2F4706%2Fupdate5qa6.jpg&hash=fc39ada2dadc36458343330c5859428a25335a77)
EDIT: Previous image too big :-[
Looking really good! I rather like the tiled roof texture, but that's just me!
Looking forward to the final! Keep up the good work, and good luck!
-M-
My wife (yes, I called her in the room, just to ask her!) and I both like the metal roof.
This is turning out to be what we've rather (thankfully!) expected to see from you... yet another masterpiece! Your attention to detail is amazing (I still can't believe both the columns and the tiled floor are as detailed as they are!).
Keep up the great work!
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg250.imageshack.us%2Fimg250%2F8360%2Fupdate6ce6.jpg&hash=69a602f94b6aef3c1f6efe2442c6aef1749aa85c)
How about that as roof? Imagine that it will ba a bit smaller and better tiled...
Actualy the metal roof for the court is more elegant in its simplicity but imagine that people is supposed to walk on the balconies and they aren't supposed to see this metalic surface... In RL this is a flat concrete roof but it's not beautyfull, so i wanted to do something more alike the original building (before its transformation in the '70s). I'm not decided yet but I think that a clay tiling would be much more appropriate... The fact that we are like "gods" overlooking our cities, it doesn't mean that we don't need to consider our creations (cities, BATs etc..) of the sims' point of view...
I agree. I actually DO like this darker tiling better.
IMO, the first tiled roof used brought TOO much attention to it... the reason why I preferred the metal roof was that it was more muted. This accomplishes a much more muted feel that definately IS more elegant, like you said.
When i'll be done with this building, i will probably update the university of athens to match (change essentialy the roof texture... I will make an announcement when it will be done.
I will also work on a second version of the library.. the old one looks a bit slappy after the progress i made on BATting... I think i did that one on 2003... 4 years! wow, time goes away soooo fast!

4 years!
Has it been that long? WOW! It will be great to see those updates as well!!
Beautiful progress on this Swi21 - the balconies and columns in the atrium are looking amazing
Whatever the material will be in the final version ... this will be top quality again.
they are both amazing. it doesn't matter which one you decide to use. those sims on the ground won't be able to see it anyhow ;D
I think the darker roof works better. It is looking great!
Fantastic stuff swi21. I really prefer the tiled roof on the inner courtyard. I like the metal but it looks a bit outta place with the overall design of the building. I like the texture you chose for the metal roof over the front half. I think it goes well with the tiled parts.

Five star, my friend! Beyond wow.
I'm in total, absolute, completely stupified awe.

Oh belevie me, they do!! I tried it with a camera... you still can see the the roof partialy from the ground! Not when you are in the middle but when you are under the portico, level 0 and 1.
Thanks to everyone for your comments! I realy appreciate! I will try to finish one of the aisles today, that shouldn't be too long.... (especialy now that all the textures are set)
This is gonna look great when it's finished!!
Sorry guys, i got lots to do today, unscheduled obligations... so no update for today, neather tomorrow... but i think i will be able to end this bat till end of the week... i will try at least.
SWI21, I finally got your tree translated into 3ds. Please see the download section.
Another incredible building I see.
Thank you very much Couchpotato! I realy appreciate your efforts... Does that mean you can do so for my oldest BATs? I mean buildings... I have some i would like to "save" from gmax...
And a new update of the Zappeion... I will finish it friday i think... except if i have bad surprises... I did this part of the aisle in a bit less that 2 hours... The rest is easy... (maybe a bit harder in the back because of the lack of images.. i actualy don't realy know what it does look like back there &sly

it's very impressive.
Impressive! I can't wait to see the final product! &apls
*drool*
Nikos, nevermind how big it will be or how long it will take you to finish it; the Zappeion looks amazingly accurate and even more than that, it's simply astonishing.

My good pc is at the repair shop (18 days so far) :'(, when I get it back I'll try and convert some buildings. I did one of yours several years ago and it turned out fine.
Final update for today and, as a matter of fact, till next week... yep, i have to work for my exams a bit.. %confuso

This is a true masterpiece you have underway!
I am truly impressed. I can't wait to showcase it in a city. &apls

The roof is that modeled up, or is all in the texture ?
This one is also turning into a masterpiece. Is it just me or are we spoiled rotten nowadays?

Hey everyone, thanks for the comments, I realy appreciate!
Vester, this is at 100% texture.. I was about to play with the bump yesterday, which i forgot, but i'm sure i can make it more realistic (like if it was a model). If you want to give it a try some day, you know where to find me ;) I'll be delighted to share!
I have no access to my computer today, but i may work on it a bit tomorrow..
Your Greek temple is exceptional ! Bravo ! I look forward to it
Wow !!! For an old city like Lysandares it looks very great &apls
Bravo
Aahhh This is an exhibition hall from the 1880's... But, true, you can use it as you wish!
This is looking beautiful, swi21! Wonderful work!
a truely awesome bat ! can't wait to download it !
It's nearly finished, isn't it? Can't wait either to get my hands on that baby! ;D
wow, what a beauty, really!!!
Now that's some stunning work. I love the open circular area in the centre. Great job all around.
Absolutely gorgeous... and huge &dance like the real thing.
wonderfull work you have done
Very beautiful like always.
Also, I finally have my good pc back and can start to convert some
of your older GMax files to 3ds. (Hopefully)
Please start with small ones at first.
My email is posted at BSC or PM me for it.

I realy appreciate! Thank you very very much! I just need some time, I still have an exam..
An EXAM!?!? What about US!!! :D
This is a call for all genuine BSC props creators: I need flowerbeds and parks in 3DS Max or .3ds format to include in my main building but also in order to populate the lot.. For the moment, I need 2 nice compositions for the 2 inside courts, one with a fountain, one with a statue or memorial (that I will provide). I suck on plants and gardens... Any volunteers? I will post in here the ground plan as an image to work on.
The exam didn't go so well but there is a good point in all this experience: I have a lot of excellent buildings and much better understanding of the neo-classical language of ornementation, mostly invented (or re-invented and re-interpretated) in the 16th, from Bramante, Raffaello, Giuliano Romano (this one isn't a good one), Antonio daSangalo the young, Peruzzi and Michelangelo, Sansovino, Sanmigelli and the best of all, Palladio! If someone looks for a building to make, these are excellent references to the classical domestic architecture (palaces, Villas) of the 16th century and certenly the fathers of the classical and neoclassical architecture in Europe and US (for the US especialy Palladio) till the begining of the 20th century and the end of the "Art Deco" school's spirit of Paris.
Some building references:
Tempietto di St.Pietro, Villa Madama, palazzo Caprini, Palazzo Branconio, Palazzo Farnese, Villa Capra (or "La Rotonda" very famous Villa from Palladio), Palazzo Te, Palazzo Chierrichati, Palazzo Corner (2: one from Sanmigelli and one from Sansovino, both in Venice), Biblioteca Marciana (Piazza San Marco-Venice, a building from Sansovino), Palazzo Capitaniato -my favorite-, Basilica de Vicensa, Palazzo Massimo, Villa Chiericatti, Villa Giulia (from Vasari), and of course, the Piazza of the Capitol in Rome, one of Michelangelo's Masterpieces! I could also speak about St Peter in Rome (Vatican) but this is abuilding where all the architects of that time worked on, it's a very complexe building and I realy wish plenty of happy moments of brain storming to the one who will try to make an exact model of the original!! I will never even try....
I had to know everything about these buildings and 68 more... so you can imagine why it didn't go so well :-[
What are you studying? It sounds like all the stuff I love! That's a lot to know, though. I'll bet you did better on the exam than you think -- you can't make such well done SC4 buildings without a thorough and working knowledge of the principles of neoclassical architecture.
I don't think this can be considered as "neoclassical". It's typicaly Renaissance.... I'm studying Architecture at the Polytechnic school of Lausanne (EPFL).. I'm on my 2nd year... and I love it! I have to admit that it helps a lot... I often see BATs that are just awfull from this point of view.. no orders, no proportions, no logic to the usage of the styles.. Modeling buildings that realy exist and are quite famous helps sometimes to understand the mecanismes of architectural composition.. But only see isn't enough, observation is absolutely necessary... As one of the beaux-arts school in the 1890's said, to understand and learn to compose an architecture, you have to observe a building from its detail to the bigger and most general elements, and finish by the whole building... But when you compose, you have to do it the other way....
Changing subject.. I'm leaving for vacation some days... And i didn't finish the Zapeion yet... but I will do my best to finish it when i will be back and before school starts again... (i will have 36 hours to do so...)
Have allways fun, be well and see you in a week!
Nikos
Seems the Lausanne has quite an extensive program of Renaissance architecture, I did one course of this as well at the Technical University of Delft here in the Netherlands, but for history only modernism is getting any real attention.
Unlike you I am not a very gifted 3D modeller and did not use computers much until my final year. But then I can make beautifully detailed and accurat drawings with hand which is almost a totally useless technic at this day and age. :D
Gmax is a way for me to start to learn skills that I also can use for work.
Your Zappeion Megaron is a beautifully executed bat with real attention to detail and subtle use of textures and colors.
I often make use of your props for my own lots and generally your list of work is very impressive.
The Palazzo Capitaniato, which building would that be? I only know the Loggia in Vicenza
Well this is it:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm1.static.flickr.com%2F120%2F313924997_e1e870e950.jpg&hash=1609edbf36740ae2de3473a9b0342bba5092c16a)
You see, only 3 windows were built, there were originaly supposed to be 7.. But it's not a Loggia, it's a Palace, it was built as the center of power of Venice's presence in Vicence, and build in front of the Basilica of Vicence, which was from the 11th century (the portico only is from Palladio) the center of power of the city of Vicence.
Well I have a few hours of history a week, 2 for the Renaissance and two more for modern architecture (we started with Wright, Le Corbusier, Berlage, Mies Van Der Rohe, Kahn, but also many artistist of the DeStijl movement.. and many many others i can't realy remember now.....)

"Bons baisers d'Athènes!"
Hope you're enjoying your vacation / holiday! ;D
Well it is a lovely building and the Italians knew how to make beautiful architecture. I have visited some of the Palladian Villa's, and the Villa Emo still remain on my list to visit again next time in Italy.
Wow ! I'm completely stunned ! keep up the good work !
Wow! This is indeed a stunning BAT. The building itself is indeed a gem of Greek revival architecture. It is good to see you BATting again. I hope your exams went well and your study prospers.
After a long brake I too have returned to Simcity. but I stall can not BAT. alas.
a.k.a. LL
Absolutely amazing bat! I can't wait to see it lotted(is that a word?) with all the little extra greenery.
Hey people! I realy am very busy with RL.. I don't know when i will be able to finish the Zappeion, even though i only need a few hours to do so (for the model... plus a few more days for lotting and create some props..then comes MODing, testing and packing...)
I promiss i will do my best to find some time in may for it...
Thank you all for your patience!
See you arround!

That's ok. Something that good is worth waiting for!
id just like to say your props are also my favourites of any pack ever released...

Your attention to detail is legendary. Beautiful work. ;D

I would love to see what you could come up with after I have shown you around Copenhagen. (Yes that was an invitation ;) )
After I started batting, I noticed all the diffrence roof stuff there is in Copenhagen, one could call it old time roof junk.
Well I better finish up some of my current projects, so can get started on some Copenhagen w2w. I think I have been talking about for a year or more :P

aawww that awful about the lost work. I know the feeling.
Fantastic new however to hear the building itself will be released in September. I look forward to it :satisfied:
