Title: Photo Critiques
Post by: Masochist on January 14, 2007, 03:37:14 PM
This thread is sort of a spin-off of Aaronperry's "Rate One Image" thread at ST.  After seeing how many Grade-A photos were being brought to that thread (and the fact that it felt like you could only bring your best), I thought it might be a good idea to have a place here where you can get some serious feedback on areas you photograph.  So if you want to get serious opinon on a photo (like a rating or something like that), or get some ideas on how to make it better, this would be the place for you .  And it doesn't just have to be on the subject of the picture itself.  If you want the picture to be rated and/or critiqued as a picture, and maybe get some ideas as to what you can do to make the photo itself a bit better, you can also do it here.

To start off, this is an area I just built (and showcased heavily in the "Downtown" thread):
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi17.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fb99%2FJetWarrior%2FSimCity%25204%2520Pics%2FRandomShotofbuildingsatdusk.jpg&hash=ce901efedc553a0c09b2c84155db318742826534)

And just because someone else posts a photo doesn't mean you can't go back and critique ones before it.  Okay...I think I've explained enough.  Feel free to critique or rate my photo as you please in any way, but please keep in mind that even though compliments are nice and definately appreciated, the point of the thread is true feedback, what you like and don't like (even if you absolutely love it and can't find anything wrong with it).  Thanks!

(By the way, I know this isn't quite a "Show Us Your..." thread per se, but I didn't quite know where else to put it.  Would it be better suited for the "Gameplay Experiments" Topic?  Not sure...if this isn't the right spot, any moderator can feel free to move it to a more appropriate place.)

<Edit> One more thing.  I ask that you wait for at least one person other than yourself to critique the latest photo before posting one of your own.  Either that, or wait three days from the time the first person posted (whichever comes first).  That ensures that everyone's pictures get a fair chance at being reviewed (because even though you can critique on any photo, most people are inclined to do only the last one).  Thanks!

I will lock this for a while, until we decide where to place and how to manage this idea  ;)

Unlocked. Feel free to post your feedback  ;D

i think your photo had many merits. there is a wide variety of downloads there which conform to a similiar style. i also love what you have done with the overhanging marriot lot. however you have a low density commercial building right in the middle of this cluster and it looks real outta place. it would also have been better on level terrain. good start 8/10

mightygoose: Thanks for the review!  I'm glad you liked my Marriot block.  It took me a while to figure out exactly what I wanted to do with it.  And I think your right about it being on flat land...but I didn't have much of a choice because the hill is gigantic.  Then again, it does remind me of Austin, TX somewhat, so I'm not sooo bummed about it.  Thanks for your feedback, though!

Someone else can post a picture for review if they wish.

nice work i enjoy the overall feel of the picture i wonder aobut the aparent hole near the chavs paradise apartments, great use of diagonal fillers, trouble is it is pretty average by your standards... try harder 8/10

I like your cities.  They always have a certain color to them...a certain vibe.  And you actually have apartment complexes!  You can look at a picture and tell if it's by you, or if you influenced it in some way, because your style is so distinct.  All that being said, I was actually a bit dissapointed with this picture.  It seems to missing a bit of flair...I don't know why.  Maybe no sunken highways or raised rails?  Not sure.  I know, it's very unfair to judge your picture based on you.  I mean, this is better than anything I could come up with...and you make it functional!  I can't do that at all.  But coming from you, it's a bit bland.  Just an opinion. I'd say 7.7/10.  By the way, I really hate to ask, but from where did you get those urban rail textures?  I cannot find them anywhere!

Hi Alek King

I like this snap. You've painstakingly taken a great deal of time and I see your heart is really into it. There is not one single square that has escaped your attention.. You've managed to get clumps of similar buildings to grow together. And I like the 'poor side of town' and your use of what appears to be trailer park mega lots. There is a huge amount of custom content.

This thread is not called "rate this photo" so I'll not give it a number, merely letting you know what I like about it. Can't think of anything that strikes me as odd. I don't do big cities but I enjoy looking at yours.

thanks a lot man i think you got the vibe i was going for, the whole areas is supposed to be one big ghetto ish suburb, something you would find on the outer fringe of city limits, with lots of wasted space and vacant lots.
the R$$ and $$$ population is 0.

Very nice, Alek, but it's a bit bland for a ghetto. :P I'd give it around 7.5 at least.

Gosh I was still critisising Alek's city, so now I have SA as well.

Alek
I like the concrete feel of the city. As you stated that is what you intended. Bravo you succeeded perfectly!  &apls
I cannot get that done by far.
One problem I have is that Jeronij's street mod keeps on turning to high wealth when plopping some lots (such as awall's ghetto lots). You seem not to have this problem.
One thing I must say is that I always get depressed looking at your pics. Right because there is so much gray in it and it is indeed bland. That's the only downside. But when someone's city can give such a realistic touch I can only awe. I would rate it at least 9/10.

SA
Petshop boys Suburbia.....
Pity the pic is from such a distant away. However, it shows how big this suburb is. Very well done. Lots of work.
Very good road vs street lay out. The rail road I would make a bit saver though, with fences along side it. This will of course cost you space but it would be a bit more realistic (if the suburb was in Europe especially the overregulated Netherlands where I hail from this would always be the case, but then again I cannot judge other countries policies regarding that). The level differences are also well concealed and no strange walls apear here and there. Very well done.
Only one down side is that I can see still some trailer homes. Those misfit a suburb. At least 8.5 / 10.

Well, this looks kind of fun! I guess I'll join in then...

Aleking: Overall judgement: brilliant. Transit solutions look absoloutly realistic! If there was anything I might feel isn't 100% it would be that there is a tad to MUCH diversity in the midrise sections, for such a neighbourhood. But that's just me looking for something to nag about, really...  ::)

SA: Awesome suburbs. Good looking traffic here too. Maybe a little more space around the railway would have looked even more realistic. And I love your photoediting too. Very subtle (never overdoing it), but still manages to enhance the experience.

And here's my contribution. It's my first try experimenting with some new mods (new terrain, new streetmod and also first time going NoMaxis) so any advice on how to get this to look better is very welcome:

nice picture, nice BAT collection and cool colors, the terrain works well with the bright homes and trees.

And as to mine i definitely agree with you, any quick trip around windows local live will show you miles of repetitive housing and rarely ever especially in new construction is only one of something made (unless it is a large $$$ signature tower).  Residentials are always built in groups and is something i think is way overlooked.  you could fill up 3 large tiles all with only light residential, and that is only what 12km of sprawl? I know many large cities have way more than that.

beatiful pic Emilin,  &apls

Hasta lavista Man.  I am in need of some burrito's!  &hlp

Even that white pick up truck is brilliant!
Your pic shows that a picture hasn't have to be huge to be outstanding. 9/10
Why only 9/10? I personally rarely give a 10/10. The only thing I can think of is Jeronij Street mod is used for a more temperate climate where as your village is a more southern style. So that is the only thing I can nag about and you cannot even help it. (so a 9.9/10 should be better here).

Thanks alot!

And I agree about the streetside mod. I have tried to find a way to lose the trees but keep the rest of the stuff (cars, bus stops, etc.) but it doesn't seem willing to do that.

Try moving the subfolder "JRJ Street trees" out from your plugins folder. Since the trees are props, the brown boxes should not show...I havent tested this, so try at your own risk  ;)

I find that last post very amusing. ::)

Alek: Excellent spacing, and an interesting mix of buildings. I little more eclectic (is that a word in enlish too?) than your usual style, which makes for an even more organic look. Extra bonus for the car crash on the main road.

NASCAR: Uh? A garbage incinirator on a tiny desert island with an unfinished bridge and the grid still turned on... what is that? I'll give you a small extra point for the nice water mod though.

Alek. Nice pic!
Accident in the midle? Bummer!  ;D (reading Emilin's post I noticed that he noticed it too)

I love the repetition.
Why is the waterboard in the middle? Guess the rest developped around it LOL.

NASCAR_guy: Interesting bridge! But grid still turned on (Press G before taking pics).
Why do you believe this is such an interesting pic?

Adriano57.
Now that's a picture.
You didn't have to show of your photo editing skills as the area is a gem in itself. But I love the snowy picture!
The embankments are perfect even though Marrast's are considered old by some I love the use of them here.
With porkies lots you almost cannot go wrong and you made a splendid piece of work. I like the elevated rail crossing the river. It's almost as in Paris.
Those appartment buildings across the Eifel tower are also well chosen!
No other comments, just sheer joy: 10 / 10

air6 i love the brown fields i do that my self it gives a seemless transition from road diagonals which obviously you exploite as well  too see what i mean look at his diagonals along the road, ave, no "step" effect.

marcszar:very nice work, i love how consistent you always are with you BAT choices, the picture is flawless.
I have  one kinda problem with using those BATs like that and that is when i build a city big enough to have that
kind of development (mid/high density) and if i only try to use those kinda BATs (NY/Chicago look) that it gets way too repetitive, so do you do different districts or what? i would, love to see one of your region shots.

I really like the intense colors. Also nice to see that you did something with your waterfront.  ;D
My only criticism is that you need to get some new residential BATs.

Cali: The planning is rather realistic with the open spaces and the golf course. A good suburban feel. And I like the single highrise (makes for a European feel despite using mostly American style buidlings).

The picture quality is not very good though. You should probably do something about that. It would make the experience much better for the viewer.

Mulefisk - what you did with buddybud's embankments, ploppable water and photoshop editing to make the canal is just perfect! I would only suggest cleaning up those messed up fragments where the water is being "cut" by the embankments into little stripes. What I also love is the placement of that church (cathedral?) on the hill, and the road that goes uphill. Maybe there is too many cars on it, but I know you can't have the perfect control over that. The overall photoshop editing (or to be more specific, overall quality improvement) makes the picture clean.
Truly, truly great work! 9/10

I've got my own picture to show. It's not very realistic, it's more a playing for fun and sculpting a city. The rail depot that you can see is actually a start of a harbour and an industrial port.

Antoine - That's a good use of jeronij's walls, the trail parks, and trees.  The water flora isn't bad, but it seems a bit out of place.  The park in the middle right side of the picture is nice, too (but again seems a tad out of place with the dark brick textures).  I'm sure that you don't hear it much, but the background you have off the edge of the map brightens the entire picture and adds a nice ambience to the scene.  Along with the water mod and the flora, it gives a real Caribbean feel to the area.

Mulefisk and szarkoz - Those are fantastic.  I'm very impressed.

Here's my contribution:

Mulefisk – A beautiful city that is oozing with old world charm. The water is a wonderful blue. It seems to have depth.

Mienhousen – Yes, this picture is one of my favorites. I hear the rustling of the fall leaves and wind passing over the fields of grain. I smell the scent of the wild flowers. I sense pride of a farmer for his sons at the end of a hard days work. A train slips down the rails. You've captured a lot in this picture. I almost want to jump in and live there.

Oh, my goodness!  This is what I get for not lurking for a week...a handful of picture-perfect screenshots!  Oi...my thoughts on some of them:

Mulefisk
: That shot...I could look at that for so long!  There are so many good things about it!  The cathedral, the canal overlook, the bridge, the switchback road...even the sidewalks!  I think one of my favorite little things in this picture is the t-intersection on the right side of the picture.  I don't know why...maybe it's the way the light filters between the two buildings there.  I don't know, but it looks awesome to me.  A question, though...what's going on with the road in the top-left corner there?  It just kind of awkwardly ends...hmm.  Oh well...not really that noticable.  Definately doesn't subract from this picture!  Awesome!

szarkoz
: Nice railyard!  That building between the two streets (next to the roundabout) I don't think is very realistic, but still, I like it (and you said you weren't going for realism, anyways).  I like this picture because there's enough to look at, but it isn't too cluttered with stuff.  And I think you got the sculpting part down...the layers form rather well, I think.  Ahh...I might get rid of some of the parking.  Particulary the one between the rail and the rail yard.  Not that parking isn't good, just that there's quite a bit of it in that picture.  But I don't whether it serves a purpose or not, so yeah.  Anyways, nice picture!

Cali
: All the green spaces are very welcoming!  Where I used to live, there were at 6 parks within sight of our house.  And that golf course fits in with the high wealth community you've created.  Ahh, I might get rid of some of those overly-repeated buildings.  But yes, nice start!

Antoine
: Welcome to SC4 Devotion, first of all!  Love that background...couldn't find a sky background like that.  I like the feel of the picture.  The water mod really fits the mood of the pic.  I might make a road right along the sea wall...or put a ped mall there, and have some business right up along there, like a boardwalk-type thing.  Just my opinion.  I like what's going on here, I think you should keep going with it!

meinhosen
: I've tried, and I've tried, and I've tried.  And I failed.  I could not find a single thing wrong with this picture!  Everything works so perfect together!  Even the Halloween-colored train!  I've seen the seasonal woods overused sometimes...or in the middle of a gigantic batch of green forest.  Here, it works flawlessly with the season.  I mean, the scarecrow, the farm, the flowers in the yard...it all just works!  Unbelievable picture!

I would post something of my own, but it wouldn't be anything that you guys haven't seen.  So I'll wait...for now.  But I'll try and come in here a little more often than I have been, 'cause the stuff in here is absolutely phenomenal!

Extraordinary work all of you. Jaw dropping stuff.

Mulefisk: Nice station. I like the layout of the parking in front of Marrast's station.
Why did you extend the industrial alley? The piece of street seems out of place there.

Antoine: nice walk to the beach. I love to life there. I would have used different sea walls. Ducidous trees on the beach is a bit odd.

Meinhosen: Great picture, great photoshopping!

Sepsis: Great props those guys pulling over the car and the others dancing on it. It's details like that, you know.

Masochist: A bit too much photo shopped for my taste. Nice coastline though and those homes there must cost a fortune.

ABCSan: Nice deteilled shot, I like to see that long EL-station in action.

Antoine: Nice park. Good lay out of the roads around it. Lot of Maxis buildings, we do not see those many more here. It's refreshning.

Iamgoingtoeat you: eat this: Great Mosaic! Nice GLR stop. Where did you find it. (I mean the small ones not the big one on the plaza). I love those W2W buildings.

Great stuff all of you.

Sepsis, interesting lot, would be nicer with some background.

Masochist, I personelly don't like the cartoon effect, but hey that's just my opinion.

ABCsan, awesome picture.  Lots of detail, all squares filled and I really like the zoom choice.  The rail over the highway and over the road, great idea.

Antoine, very good picture.  Nice commercial area around the park and nice hieght on the buildings.  New York style, not the building choice but the commercial district around the park.  Great work.

iamgoingtoeatyou, great mosaic, but there is alot of repeated buildings (the corner one mostly, it looks like there are different variations, but still)  Overall I like the picture alot.

LP, nice picture, I don't get a great over all feel and I'm unsure why.  I think it's the diagonal road crossing the canal, it just doesn't look right to me.  Again just my opinion.

&apls &apls &apls &apls &apls &apls for each of you.

ABCsan:  Nice picture!  I really like that elevated rail over the road!  For some reason, you don't see that so much, but I guess that makes the picture all the more better.  The only thing that even remotely bugs me about it is that grass lawn next to that skyscraper...it strikes a nerve, being the only patch of flat green and all.  But that's just me...it's a great picture over all!

Antoine
: Cool park!  I haven't really made a large one yet in my city, but that's a very good model of what I'm hoping mine'll look like.  Ahh, buildings are repetative, but meh.  I do like how your blocks have grass courtyards in the spaces not connected to the roads!  Very inner-city-beautification-like!

iamgoingtoeatyou
: I'm curious...what part of day was that taken in?  It looks too dark to be daytime, but too light to be any other time...just wondering.  Love the W2W neighborhood!  Looks like you put a lot of effort into it.  One thing...I wish the shadows were clearer.  In the plaza, they look like splotches of water or something.  Speaking of that plaza, is there a slight hump in it on the right side?  I can't really tell because it may just be the shadows.  Not that it looks bad (I actually like it), I just wanted to know if that's what I was seeing.  Anyways, it's a great mosaic!

LP: Hello!  Good to see you here, LP  :)!  First thing I noticed was how good those Maxis buildings look right up against the canals in the lower right-hand corner.  At least, they do to me.  Ahh...I get mixed signals from this picture.  You have a canal lock there (that is a canal lock, right?), but the street bridge doesn't look high enough for ships, and you've got fountains in the canal.  I don't know...IMO I'd think it'd do better without the lock right there.  Of course, it's just my opinion, and I really don't know what the purpose of the canal is, so yeah.  I do, however, like almost every thing along the canal walls.  You've done a nice decorating job, I think!  All in all, a good picture!  P. S.: you may also like the "Ultimate Critic's" thread.  You have to give constructive criticisms in there!

To everybody who liked my picture and commented positively, thank you!  To everyone who didn't, yeah, well screw...ahh, I mean, I value your opinion  :D.  LOL, I'm just kidding, of course!  It's perfectly all right for you to disagree with my picture.  This is an opinion-oriented thread, and hopefully everyone understands that not everyone will like their pictures (unless their name happens to be Jeronij...%wrd).  So yeah, I don't mind anyone's opinions about my pictures whether they be positive or negative.  In fact, the more the merryer, so keep 'em coming!  ;D
Title: Re: Photo Critiques
Post by: LP` on February 22, 2007, 08:30:06 AM
Thanks everyone for the compliments.  :)

The canal is just the leftovers in a post-industrial city. It's just there for decoration now, hence the new bridge and fountains. The ship is actually a small museum, that lock doesn't raise or lower anymore, doors are welded shut.  ;)

Quite enjoying myself here so far, might just go poke around some more...

Masochist: I don't know what splatches of water you're talking about, it might be the shadows you're looking at because my Video Graphics Card hasn't been working all that well lately with Simcity. I took the picture in regular daytime and altered the color in photoshop to make it look a little more darker, also, yes there is a slight hump in the right side, the city is actually built on a bunch of hills [like san francisco] when you look at the city from far away you can see some buildings and streets are higher than others, something i really like about it, anyways, sorry for the long comment :p

New tower at the point of Jenora Island. Started off with a steep small volcanic island, teraced it, reclaimed a bunch of land, and went onto building a metropolis. I love the use of the canals; however, as stated above, some buildings are repeated a few too many times. Okay, I've been neglecting this thread too much, and I'm sorry for it &cry2!  But here I go:

marcszar: I love that dulled out effect you put into your mosaics!  I think it really helps to convey the mood it seems you're trying to send.  Not to mention your city-building skills are top-notch!  Gotta give that one a 10/10!  I seriously can't find anything I don't like about it!  Nice job!  &apls

Russell: Interesting picture!  Love those canals all around, and that thin strip of land towards the left side!  That's also a very nice choice for a central, dominating tower !  Ahh...quite a bit of repetition...and so many streets for such a high-density area!  Traffic must be...L.A.-like!  Anyways, I like the picture overall, but yeah, lots of repeating buildings and such...7.25/10

guurgkud
: So bright!  I like that intersection plaza on the left side!  This picture seems very Miami-ish to me, for some reason...it may just be the colors and such, but that's the vibe I get (that's a good thing ;)!).  Not that it's a big deal in this picture, but next time you may want to turn off those "U-Drive-It" indicators.  Also, I like the particular mix of plants, but there are quite a bit of the one type, and it goes all into the streets and such.  That might give your Sims a hard time.  All in all, though, I'm liking the warm, sunny feeling I get when I look at your picture...like sun shines right through the monitor :sunny:!  8.25/10

Ahh...I have a picture to offer.  Say what you will about it:

I'd like to throw in one of mine, I'm not very good at making cities, but I try. This one comes from a possible MD..but I dunno yet. It's inspired by the city of Augusta, Georgia, USA. However, it does not really reflect the city, only the style of buildings and layouts of rail and such. Please, tell me how i can make it better, and a fair rating would be nice

Frankie: Lovely picture. It's quite a realistic downtown area. 9/10 without UDI Bubbles with them 7/10 as they really ruin the image and atmosphere.

Yoman: Very European. I love the path on the bottom. 8.5/10 because personally I don't think the New York City homes really fit. But thats just my personal opinion.

Masochist: Nice urban pic. The EL Train adds a Chicago-like atmosphere. 7.25/10 because it could use some more custom content. I simply cannot stand Maxis buildings.

Yeah...I suppose this would count as a bump...to a thread that I started, no less.  That looks bad, I know...and I'm sorry.  But anyways...I have this mosaic.  It's the only one I've ever done.  I'd like some critical feedback on it, if you please...about anything, really:

Awesome mosaic Masochist, a bit to much open space for an urban area, but that's just my preference. I have a habit of
filling every tile in sight.  ::) Anyway, 7.5

One of mine...

Masochist: I agree a bit with Travis on the open space thing. I think for me though, it's that the open space seems to be left open for no reason (there's nothing special about it...) no trees, no parks, nothing that would otherwise impede construction. It seems likely (at least for the majority of what I have seen) that vacant space will be built on before other spaces soar higher.
-Also, the roundabout at the top seems to have no purpose (perhaps it is for future development or something).
-One other thing, about 1/2 way down the mosaic, there is a tennis court which seems to be out of place.
Other than that, it looks pretty darn good and shows good planning in terms of the way the roads and rail inter-twine.
8/10

Travis: It looks good. A bit cold; but good. (some interesting shadows, but I doubt those can be helped)
9/10

Good pics all.

Hi guys, I don't know how it happens I missed this topic - the next good idea of Masochist  I like it very much!

Travis: I really like this picture, I saw it in the competition. Your idea was very good. Ploppable water an Rayden's snow are excellent and very useful, but they are difficult to use in many cases, especially if you are going to make a closeup.
Some sharp edges look unrealistic. Some shadows also look strange. But the reason is not your execution, but the nature of these ploppable pieces. I think such thing can be done, but in slightly different way (maybe I can make some experiments, if I will succeed, I will show it).
Anyway, nice couple of trees, this building fits very well here.

Masochist: I like your work and I am sure your skills are better than mine. But It seems to me you need a constructive information  ;) - so here is it:

1. Roundabout: OK, nothing against it. But if you don't provide any additional roads in this place, make the last bus stop and some small commercials here, and maybe a walkpath to the city border (who knows what is there?   ;D)

2. Roads on slopes: try to soften transitions from flat terrain to the slope. I know very good you haven't enough space - especially near the bridge base, but you are a talented engineer, aren't you?  ;)

3. Rock mod and beach: This Red-Brown Granite is one of the best rock mods IMO. It looks good on general views and on closeups. But the beach mod you use is completely different and looks very strange with this rock.
If you want to use Red-Brn Granite, try Olympic Beach (Moab Beach is too reddish to this rock). If you want to use this beach mod, try to use Jeronij's version of PEG Limestone, or another bright one.

4. Convention center: Good place for it. But trucks will not be able to drive out from the parking  :(

As you see I analysed only the upper part of you mosaic - I didn't want to make my post longer than it  :D
I hope these notes will be useful for you  :)

OK, now i ask you for an analyse of this picture - be hard on it!

Ennedi:

For a fantasy-city you managed to make it look incredibly believable!
It looks to me like it's mainly a commercial CBD. So i'm thinking, if it's a big centre with lots of jobs, the land around it will probably be very valuable. Therefore, even though it looks good, it doesen't make much sense to me that so much space should be left open. I think it would look a lot more realistic if you filled in that open space with some new towers, or maybe some mid-rise.
Also, because all the other buildings are modern, the high-school looks a bit out of place.

Other than that, it's perfect! Great work.
Title: Re: Photo Critiques

Masochist-   I agree with the others, there are open spaces that appear to be there for no other reason than to be open.  In most cities, all spots of land are snatched up and used.  Perhaps you might want to either make it into parkland, or fill it in with some trees.  I use Cyclepuppy's but any would work quite well.

I also prefer plazas and parks I make myself, but that's just a personal preference, I guess!

One last thing... in a couple of the spots, it appears that the railroad tracks curve unnecessarily.  Cars and trucks can maneuver and houses and buildings can be torn down and moved, but trains don't weave very well, so you might consider straightening up the straightaways and making the turns more gradual.  Overall, it's a great mosaic!  I love the way you've planned out your road system as well!!

Travis-   I agree with the other comments that a few of the effects (the shaddows, etc) are a bit out of place, but there isn't much you can do with that!  I'm glad there's a fire in the cabin, 'cause it looks cold!

Ennedi-  Can you show us some more up-close pics?  It looks good overall, but it's a bit tough to see the details!

Mulefisk: Thank you very much for your critique!  :) It is very helpful, it shows me how other people look at my pictures.

Of course you are right. I agree about empty spaces, they will be filled. Some reasons of such situation are:
1. I developed some residential areas first to have enough citizens (also in neghbour cities). Than I started to build the center (of course I had main roads earlier).
2. In the center I made some experiments with composition, I also tried to make a good skyline an I didn't want to put a lot of skyscrapers on a small space. I rather wanted to set off existing buildings - they are worth of it.
3. Because of  point 2 I looked for some midrises wchich would fit here - but it was some months ago and I hadn't enough of them. Now I have and I can build (it is still difficult because there is quite steep slope behind the center  ::)).
Of course I agree about high school - I must think about it

Cabra Buitre: Thank you for your comment  :). I think the purpose of this topic is to show only one picture. I put some closeups of the area showed on my picture in:
"Show us your Downtowns & CBDs" - page 17
"Show us your intersections" - page 3
And... Maybe Masochist will not be very angry if I will put 2 of them here:

Btw - I agree with your comment for Travis

Edit: Of course I ask for our opinion about these pictures too!

Ennedi,

What I like about these shots are that you've planned out each little bit of the shot.  They're full of "something" practical, even if it is just a few trees.  One thing I have done is to use the maxis tree replacement mods that are here on the LEX.  I just think the trees created by other SC4 members are better, but that's just my opinion.

I also really like your decision for the path tile.  It goes very well with the rest of the buildings surrounding it in the pictures!!

CabraBuitre,

I didn't know if I could remove Maxis trees from the lots (as you see I use CP's and other trees on the open space). I found these mods yet. Thank you again!

Here are the mods...

http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=645

http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=651

I'm not sure if items need to be replopped, I haven't done too much investigation into these, but they get rid of the maxis palm (the first two are two different choices) and the maxis oak.

@Ennedi, all three are beautiful. I must say, all of your pictures exhibit a certain charming appearance, something I've been trying to accomplish
with my pics for years. As for that 3rd pic, it maybe could use a few different kinds of rocks, like these (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=679) for instance. But otherwise, they're great!

@To all, yes, those shadows do look kinda weird, maybe I should have turned them off?

Anyway, this pic is probably my all-time favorite...

Hello Travis,

Sorry, I hadn't time to reply quickly, but I must say your picture is fantastic. The stream with rapids, rocks and trees is a great composition. Also your use of these houses is perfect for me. I tried to find anything wchich doesn't fit here, but I didn't. I know it is very difficult to make a good composition using trees. If you will make one click too much, everything is wrong - the same thing with rocks and water flora. You have very good feeling of it (sorry if my English is bad).

About my pictures - thank you very much for your nice words. I still try to find my own style. About rocks - I have mossy Granite rock mod in this city. There aren't ploppable rocks similar to it, But in my opinion white stones on the seashore fits better to this rock mod than brown. Thinking about realism, these stones came into being from the rock because of erosion. In real life sometimes rocks has many different colors, but more often you can see monochromatic rocky landscapes.

OK, now the pic I like...

Title: Re: Photo Critiques
Post by: Travis on June 28, 2007, 03:43:38 PM
Thank you Ennedi, indeed, using mayor-mode flora is difficult and takes much practice to get a good effect. One wrong click and I
have to bulldoze the whole tile. (Might not sound like much, but you wouldn't believe how much time I can spend on a lone grid square.  ::) )
You're right about the rocks. I don't create natural seashores very often, I usually pave them over with embankments or beaches.

Thanks shoreman, I just can't get enough of C.P.'s houses. They're so realistic, especially how they're placed on angles,
it helps to break the monotony of all-orthogonal neighborhoods in SC4.

8/10. I've seen alot of images here and I hate to say it but in my honest opinion if you need flashy graphical effects to make your pictures look good, as in lack of natural unedited raw images that have a certain no photoshop required aura then you need to work on your presentation more, this image is one of my favorites.
