Title: Disappearing Members
Post by: Pat on August 30, 2007, 05:25:42 PM

Has anyone else noticed that 3 members have disappeared if not more?
Thundercrack83, Strechnitz and Patriots1228 all have gone poof...
My question is though how this happend was there a hack or a glich
in the software that caused the members to go poof...

Are there anymore members that anyone else has noticed gone all the sudden?

I've noticed it too, same members. They still appear to be able to log on, as I saw Dustin (thundercrack83) online a few minutes ago.

Yes, but I had to re-register, which is why this is my second post. According to David, something happened accidentally and he's on the job--at least in my case. I'm sure it's the same for the others, too!

No- just an idiot's (referring to me) mistake.  I've sorta fixed Dustin.  I owe Strech, 'shardz and pats bigtime.

If anyone is in touch with them, let each know we're on it.

Heh, some of you might recall that I have some prior experience in this area...

* * *

Fun aside, what happened to our friends' user accounts is one of the big downsides to being an administrator.  Yesterday, I was doing some maintenance of the various user groups we have.  I found Dustin (thundercrack83), strechnitz, dragonshardz and patriots1228 in a group that was clearly where they should not have been and hit the "remove" button.

...and, poof- they were gone.

Just like that.  No warning.  No "What are you doing, Dave?" box.  No "This operation can't be undone" message.  Just a little innocuous button exactly like a whole bunch of other little innocuous buttons here in Adminland at SC4D.  I thought I was removing them from the group, the membership maintenance software thought otherwise...

...and you know who won that disagreement.

So, I'm trying to fix this.  Jeronij has taken away my Admin Bathroom Privileges and chained me to the server until I do, so I'll be working on the situation really hard as we head into the weekend...

...maybe that astronaut lady has a few of those Depends [linkie] (http://www.depend.com/) left over...

...and will keep all updated.

In the meantime, my profuse apologies to all four members involved.  I guess it's better that I pressed the wrong button now, though, as opposed to 25 years ago.

Again, we'll fix this.

David

Not a problem, David! Well...maybe a slight problem, but nothing that hasn't been rectified! Thanks again, my friend!

Bad news on the "disappearing members" front.  The old records are, apparently, wiped from the database.

I need for Stretch (strechnitz), 'shardz (dragonshardz) and pats (patriots1228) to re-register under those nics...

...sorry for the inconvenience, guys...

...and then PM me once they're back on so we can rebuild their member profile much as we have done with Dustin's (thundercrack83).

Again, this was my error, and I'm really sorry that it happened.

Aha,

This makes a lot of things very clear now. I was startled a bit when I suddenly did not seem to exist
I just wrote Jeronji a very panicky PM just now. I'll rectify that.

I don't blame you at all David. Mistakes are only too human. We all make them. Pity I will have to miss my saved PM's though. but that's not the end of the world.

I do hope that I will be able to regain acces to all my posts I've made in the forums.

luckily I have seem to accidently take the first step to recovery by reregistering myself under Strechnitz again..

I'll PM you David.

Strechnitz.

Actually, to be more specific, the ultimate question that would produce the ultimate answer, i.e. 42, is quite unknown. :P

Nobody really knows, I believe, what the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe and Everything is. :P We do know the answer is 42 though. ;D

The answer, however, to the specific question that was at hand, was in fact two.  To be cryptic once again, it is doubted that this is any longer the answer, or better not be if someone knows what is good for him in any event.

I've become teary only twice in my life on hearing of the death of a person who had been an author or artist- Douglas Adams and Frank Zappa.  Two (there's that number again, but this is just mere coincidence) immensely talented souls, gone before their time.

Well it can't be the number of people missing still or that were missing at the time of that post because three of the missing four reported back, with the exception of Dragonshardz.

Unless there were more casualties? :D
