Title: Sprø Diamant Islands
Post by: Moshi on August 31, 2007, 05:50:22 AM
Welcome To
Sprø Diamant Islands

Latest update: Ashtabula Full Update #2 by Moshi

Sprø Diamant Archipelago is a fairly rural cluster of volcanic islands located in the northern Atlantic. Humans settled the five main islands, each of them home to a new nation that could be seen across the waves on a sunny day. Travel visas are required these days, however, one only needs to fill out a simple form to recieve the Sprø Visitor's Pass that grants free access to all islands.

I'll post my first 2 updates from simtropolis as one post here:

Mjig: Naval Base

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi123.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fo292%2Fmjig_dudy%2FUntitled-7copy-1.jpg&hash=1d6e60c0f4b2d6b2f1f0666a0bd5fa37703662c6)

The old Soviet Naval Base stands on the south eastern shore of the Main islands. It was abandoned rapidly in 1981 two years before the collapse of the USSR. Some of the smaller warships still remain at the base. Last year one was sunk during heavy storms, and the others are in a bad state.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi123.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fo292%2Fmjig_dudy%2F003USSRNavy01.jpg&hash=cb244b50cf6f4786b344d2fb1307a84fa1a366b0)

A Bridge was built by the Soviets when constructing the Navy base, This bridge connected the main island to a small island just of the coast. Although there is a fishing village on the  small island, the locals are not permitted to use the bridge because it was deemed unsafe, due to the poor quality concrete used in the construction. The road has been cut off and the villagers have to use the twice daily ferry to reach the mainland.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi123.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fo292%2Fmjig_dudy%2F003USSRNavy02.jpg&hash=6d4f5135ca695d98836945eb9b6b26e9ba93dbcd)

At the time when the base was operational, it was home to two Soviet nuclear submarines, These were kept in the condition, by a then state-of-the-art maintenance facility. It now stands rusting, and the nuclear Submarines were returned to Russia when the base was abandoned.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi123.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fo292%2Fmjig_dudy%2F003USSRNavy03.jpg&hash=2bf255882f0fd8d0f5541c093ea2b97f88bf06ee)

Mjig: Government and Politics.

Hawk islands has 3 main political parties:

The centre-left Liberal party, holds the minority in a coalition government with the Labour party.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi123.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fo292%2Fmjig_dudy%2FConservative200-2.jpg&hash=b57509048cebcfcee33273dbdfa599642642e2f6)
The right wing Conservative party, currently in opposition.

There are also other several smaller political parties, of which the largest is Communist Party

The following pie chart shows the current distribution of government seats.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi123.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fo292%2Fmjig_dudy%2FPie.jpg&hash=02fe4fd896cb99769a885308757b85c7f402e8a7)
Labour and the Liberals forming a coalition government, with an overall percentage of 65%

Now some pictures of the government area:

The parliament building. Built in 1959 to replace the old building which was by then far too small for its purpose, as there had been many re-workings of government constituencies, resulting in a large increase in members of parliament. This was the winning design of many entries. The design was chosen by a committee appointed by the Socialist government, and some people claim that these red windows were chosen to represent the red of socialism, however members of government from the time deny that this was the case.

Updates1-3 Remastered

The nation of Orofino includes the southwestern large island and surrounding areas, ruled by none other than Chancellor Moshi.

Labor refugees from Great Britain, who overthrew the leader of the colony of New Leeds, established the nation of Orofino in the late 18th century. The leaders over in London decided to ignore this minor loss, as the colony was extremely unproductive and things were not going well over in the new world. The 200 citizens of the newly-formed country started the world's first nation based on communist ideals. Our flag was and still is this:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs129%2FMoshi811%2F600px-Civil_and_Naval_Ensign_of_Fra.svg.png&hash=7537a0267cef33723e85f44e0bf61b305461b7e9)
The blue stands for the sea, the green for the wildlife, and the brown for the land. Albeit having been founded around 200 years before silent spring, the founding fathers were focused on preserving the abundant and exotic nature that surrounded them.
Although the country was at peace for more than 150 years, political pressure from European nations and a disastrous spending frenzy made it join Germany in the final days of the Great War. Orofino surrendered in a record 35 minutes after the only aircraft was shot down before takeoff by 3 full British RAF squadrons.

Let's skip history for the moment and get down into the fun stuff... present day Esque! Esque is a smallish city located on the southeastern peninsula of Orofino. Currently capital, it was the second settlement founded in Orofino in 1781.

This is the area around Esque central station, the center of the city. The country's largest department store, SOGOESQUE, is located on the intersection of the avenues.

Although this is a plain office block, it is famous for being the tallest one in the nation.

Esque was built on top of a gently rolling hill, and when the choice was made to flatten the land, these semi-embankments were built to prevent soil from being washed away.

It's very interesting!

I really like your idea to make a multiplayer region on separate islands  :), I also there is a better chance of real cooperation if there is only a few players in such region.

There is some really cool details here, I especially like Mjig's pictures - but all of them are very good! &apls

Krioan State

Ok. It's my turn to give update. Now I don't any other pictures than flag, but I shall beat my comrades with history! Moshi, owned. Mjig, owned.

Kriosaari (Krio Island) was settled by Finland in the 1920, when they were in brief war against Sweden when they fought who owns the Aland. Finland won and also demanded biggest island from Diamont Archipelago from Swedish. Sweden accepted and later sold two smaller island to Finland. During WWII when Finland was fighting with Axis, Americans occupied the islands and later annexed them when Soviet did same to other islands. Native Krioans disliked the Americans, who were using the island for military purposes only and during Vietnam War Krioans overthrew Krio Territoral Goverment and after hundreds of years, they were free. Americans offered defense against Soviet Union and newborn nation accepted that. In the 1980s when Soviet Union collapsed, Krioan State demanded that Americans leave islands, because newbie states Orofino and Hawk Islands weren't a theart and Krioan State became regional power. Now in new millenium, Krioan State is one of the richest nations in the world and also seeking new territories from sea and space.

Economy of Krioan Island becomes from oil, uranium and fish. Large amounts of oil were discovered in 1938 and with the help of Nazis production started in the middle of WWII. During "American occupation" oil pumps and technology was lifted to meet Texas Standars and after independence Krioan State joined OPEC and now controls worlds' 8 largest oil reserves. Uranium was discovered in the 90's when mining company started to research Northwest Mountains. Uranium later became Krioan State's second most important export good, when China offered a good deal which isn't just money (there are rumours about nuclear weapon program). Fish was important for centuries, but now fish is "only" 4 the largest export material .

Politics and other stuff follows.

Flag of Krioan State:

Colours of the flag comes from Finland's flag. Meaning of white is same, snow, ice and clean nature but blue is for Atlantic Ocean and efficency.

Hello Bengt,

I'm sure Krio Island is a great part of this region
I like diagonal buildings and clear look of your pictures  &apls

If you would like to think about flattening these waves on road and diagonal park onfirst picture, it would be even better  ;)

As for your economy - I see you have great possibilities, but I hope you will not pollute the sea by oil  ;D
And maybe you would like to think about uranium, I know China is an interesting partner, but I don't know if you have ever seen uranium mines? They are very deep and have gigantic mine slag heaps around them - I saw them many years ago in Czech Republic when Eastern Europe was a communist region. Workers in these mines had much money (as for communist conditions), their salary was about 10x bigger than average, but their average length of life was about 35 years (!)
One time I had an idea to make in SC4 the biggest and highest (about 3500 m above the sea level) gold mine in the world - Grasberg mine. It is located in mountains of Irianjaya, it is a massive hole in the centre of mountain range. But when i have read about it's catastrophic impact on the environment, I decide to don't build it  ;D There are many ways to make business with China, but you must be aware  :D

Built in 1992 the small airport was built to help revive the islands economy. Previously the only connection to the mainland was with a two day ferry ride to Norway. Now Scandinavian Airlines runs a 2 hour flight from Oslo Airport to the new airport once a day. KLM also runs a 3 Hour flight from Schiphol Airport twice weekly.

Huak Air, which is wholly owned by the Hawk islands Government, runs local flights between the other Sprø islands.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi123.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fo292%2Fmjig_dudy%2F005Airport001.jpg&hash=910a406da5077614d8ff4e29fb35619664663ba6)
The airport paid off its debts last year, 3 years behind schedule. The airport proved less popular than was initially thought, as people stuck to using the ferry to get to other Sprø Islands, but usage of the airport has steadily increased over the year. In 2003 a new gate was added where larger jets could park, to provide higher capacity flights to oslo.

Soapy: The Nation of Antigonish - Introduction

Antigonish is the North-East Island and the three surrounding Islands

Brief History

The Islands were first discovered by Norwegian fishermen whom used the islands to set up fishing ports, as more people came to Islands, they grew with small fishing communities. Things continued this way until 1938, when the Islands were used during World War II as an Axis supply port, the settlements were later destroyed by Allied Bomber planes near the end of the war. After the war, Norwegian settlers came to the war torn Nation and re-built new towns.

Present day, The Islands still stand as small fishing communities.
This is one of the small towns at dusk on the Islands north end...

mjig or moshi, could you move this again to ST theard or else  $%#Ninj2

City of Tammerkoski is Krioan State's political, economical and culture capital. City dosen't have harbour or much industry, but many international company is based there, because city's tax policy is very low for companies and State also supports this. Tammerkoski was founded in 1422 by Swedish Magnus Brandö who brought group of settlers and soldiers after King of Sweden ordered him to do so. Tammerkoski's original Swedish name is Sandholm but it was changed to Tammerkoski when Finland received island and the city in 1922. When Krio Island was American territory, city was named to Patton, after American WWII general who conqured island from Finland and nazis. When Krioan war of inpendence was over and Patton conquered and Americans driven away, original Finnish name was restored. Both Sandholm and Patton exist today, both are districts of Tammerkoski.

City's population is 437 500 and Greater Tammerkoski's population is almost a million. Tammerkoski's inhabitants are mainly Finnish with 83 % of population. Sprøans 10 %, American 5 % and 5 % other minorities. Most of the ministeries are located in Tammerkoski, but some are moved to neighbouring cities to create more jobs in those cities. Parliament and president lives in the city and goverment meets in the city four times in a week.

Transportation is good, one of the best systems in Nordic. City has given space to pedestrians and public transport is heavily used. Underground, tramlines and busses cover all city and avenues take care of cars. City also has a train station, but no seaport or airport. Both airport and seaport are located in the neighbouring cities and they are connected to Tammerkoski by highways, rail and underground.

There is so much going on that I'm not sure how to comment!...how about this....

@Mjig_dudy - I really like your parliament district and the black and white photos were a nice touch to the naval areas. What I really love is your airport island, this is top notch...and the nighttime shots really put it over the edge.

@Moshi - these are some really nice nature shots of your island. I really like all your coastal pictures.

@Krio - eye spy some unreleased diagonals... ;D :D very nice. I like your use of the diagonals and the way they appear seamless with the rest of the city. I must ask where you found the green curved building in the last picture of your second update and where I can find it (it has advertisements all over it like google and juicy fruit gum, is this your own creation). CBD is very nice and the water square is very unique...I like it.

@Soapy - nice fog shots. your coastline looks very realistic.

Krio: nice story, and your diagonals are a joy to look at.

Title: Re: Sprø Diamant Islands - Krioan Politics
Post by: Krio on October 05, 2007, 08:14:53 PM
Are we dead yet?

But, I could show Krioan State's political system:

Krioan State is a democracy. Every 4 years people over 18 years vote 200 members of Krioan Parliament. Parliament has the supreme power and it makes the laws and can accpet them, if president won't do it. MPs are divided into groups, which plan laws and decides policy for certain subject like foreign policy but every MP can suggest a law freely even if the law has nothing to do with his / her group. Policies are usually given once a year and MPs then work according to them.

Cabinet is taken from the parliament and they follow the guidelines what parliament has given but their job is more detailed than parliament's group. E.g defence minister has power to by arms from other nations without "permission" from parliament or minister of agriculture can give support to farmers from budget without "permission".

President's role has been ceremonial since independence because State wants to avoid dictatorships and "mistakes" from one person after they saw how first the Finland's president decided go to war along "Third Reich" against USSR and how French president gave order to bomb Syria after his diplomatic blunder in the 1960's. President's greatest power is to appoint the Supreme Judges without asking parliament, which can't "sack" judges. President also signs the laws and represents the State abroad.

Currently there are eight parties in the parliament with following share:
Demokratia (Democracy) - 55 MPs
Vihreät - Greens - 50 MPs 105
KSP (Krioan Social Democrat Party or Social Demokrats) - 48 MPs
Unioni Puolue (Union Party [christian conservatives]) - 22 MPs
Keskusta (Centre Party) - 12 MPs
Krion Kommunistinen Puolue (Krioan Communist Party or KKP) - 5 MPs
Mustapaidat (Black Shrits [National Socialist]) - 5 MPs
Ruotsalainen Puolue (Swedish Party) - 3 MPs

Democracy-praty is liberal and support free market, education and low taxes while goverments other half Green party support fair free trade and minimal social welfare like free healthcare and education. Social Democrats support higher taxes and social welfare state and indpendence from alliances like NATO. Unionits are conservatives when it comes to marriage, religion and welfare. They want free education, but not healthcare and they also occasionally speak joining back to United States of America as their 54th state. Centre party are all about farming and industry and they dislike free trade because "it kills local farming". Communists are what they are, full state ownership with "free speech" and free welfare. Blackshirts are national socialists and it was founded by old Finnish and German nazis, but old war criminals were given to The Hague. Nowdays this party wants to exile all non-krioan people from the State and ban all religions than christianity. Small Swedish party is for small Swedish minority. They want to keep Swedish culture alive and funding for Swedish scools.

I guess I should update you all on my situation.

After a rather unfortunate situation involving me, a spare hard disk and some much needed cleaning up of my computer, I lost all of my plugins and cities, in fact, my whole simcity folder.

I have to restart my islands, which I will do, but not any time soon. I expect it will be after Christmas before i re-start, I am afraid.

This will mean my island will have gone a sudden transformation next time you see it. Just imagine some aliens came and moved all the buildings around and then, before leaving, wiped everyone's memory. This way there won't be too much disruption to the story line when I return.

So, in a couple of months, I should have an update or you.

Finally, here is the last picture i took. As you can see its election time, and the posters have gone up.

The Nation of Orofino
Due to some reorganization of my plugins, This update will consist of a city on Orofino's northern coast, Ashtabula.

Ashtabula is a famous town founded approximately 230 years ago as a small port on the mouth of Orofino's largest river. Following the loss in the Great war, Ashtabula was exempt from the government's harsh taxes since it was the principal port of the nation. While Esque suffered the burden of the war, Ashtabula became very rich due to the fact that it was the only modern port in the entire archipelago. The great depression, combined with the  devestation of Esque due to the eruption of Mt. Tiffin to the south led to a massive increase in its population. The city continues to thrive today as the undisputable center of commerce.

What? 3 updates in a row?   %confuso

The Nation of Orofino- Ashtabula Update 2

First: a look at what has been made so far:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs129%2FMoshi811%2Fsimcityscreenshot0016.jpg&hash=efc8c8a44ac201228fd0ed8c7c88ccc35112c867)

Note to self... demolish at least 5 skyscrapers...

The area around the white apartment has been redone.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs129%2FMoshi811%2Fsimcityscreenshot0017.jpg&hash=61661eaf5f0e3f1461ec449ad48ee45fe751c0e4)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs129%2FMoshi811%2Fsimcityscreenshot0018.jpg&hash=9fc35a02be4450d9fae93d3310026adb58a1ee33)

Nobody can tell what this says:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs129%2FMoshi811%2Fsimcityscreenshot0020.jpg&hash=0fabe068b7782690ac1e7112ae66ce6bd7b9161c)
I was going to mention a joke I came up with, but I'll save it for later.  :P

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs129%2FMoshi811%2Fsimcityscreenshot0021.jpg&hash=7ecf02247b900d7342bf20e0519d804faa5a3b78)
The main focus of the above picture is a particularly large and omnious building. It is mainly used as an exam hall.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs129%2FMoshi811%2Fsimcityscreenshot0022.jpg&hash=342b24bc55dba2b49a9aee7cf0cee69b51d826b1)
Development yet to be defined. The long and winding road leads to your door... if you live in Esque, that is.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs129%2FMoshi811%2Fsimcityscreenshot0023.jpg&hash=651a79bfdae0f28a36adeb0efd7f5b6baa128a21)
I strongly dislike Maxis highways.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs129%2FMoshi811%2Fsimcityscreenshot0024.jpg&hash=2a3693d117d4d2c21b894ed8c87490811249a584)
Nothing (hopefully) too fancy; a metropolitan mall and some buildings.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs129%2FMoshi811%2Fsimcityscreenshot0026.jpg&hash=58510a1fead6dbc0183a10f1783214808d5b7596)
Those two towers once marked the entrance to Ashtabula, which were the only settlement for several kilometers in any direction when the towers were built.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs129%2FMoshi811%2Fsimcityscreenshot0028.jpg&hash=e7749bbe4a725da5bbbf58d3e34b1bced1033cff)
The Ashtabulan waterfront is lined with shops, some of which predate even the mighty Krioan State.

And to top it off...
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs129%2FMoshi811%2Fsimcityscreenshot0013.jpg&hash=83ad079e3bafcac154435c7cdda57d76028a8936)
Discoesque has a branch in Ashtabula, as well. This branch has more people every night than the one in Esque, the reason becoming suddenly apparent when you look closely at the surrounding buildings...

Thanks to all who replied!

Beautiful closer pictures Moshi , and some apt ideas to fit with diagonals BATs , have taken some notes .

At least as important than a question of numbers of skycrappers , I think that the "frontier" between the two different style/district is too visible/straight on the first picture ...not easy to correct with this rural highway .Maybe with two or three (the odd numbers have a stronger impact on our minds  even on those which don't seem to care ...$%#Ninj2 ) mid rises buildings on the residential side along the highway ...and if you intend to extend these residential areas . ::)

Badsim: Thanks for the suggestion. Instead of increasing the height of the buildings on the residental side, I think I'll place buildings with a lower height on the commercial side, since I don't want too many highrises.

Smallish Teaser

Discotheque gave birth to the phrase "Typical Risko (Typical is pronounced Typico, rhyming with Risko)"  which means that someone has done something risky but meaningless.
e.g. Don't pull a Typical Risko by writing your English homework in French, because you might get a complaint from the French Embassy.

Let me explain.

Discotheque Ashtabula Daytime Pic:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi151.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs129%2FMoshi811%2Fsimcityscreenshot0012.jpg&hash=f1bf195af76d7aa5557c2b3f90c5ef6f74ee1a68)
As you can see, the placement of the building and the asphalt ground the architect chose adds to the impression that this is an "educational institue", thus the hordes of students rushing in after 3:00PM. Needless to say, this Discotheque branch's earnings approach 6% of the nation's GDP. Numerous lawsuits by other Disco clubs (notably "Risko", an international financial combine dealing with disco, formal dining, formal disco [unsuccessful] and disco-style supermarkets [Riskomarket Ashtabula opening next month]), pointing out the (supposedly) obvious fraudulent usage of identical asphalt, have been filed against the Discotheque Group possibly as a result of the success of this particular branch. However, since this asphalt pattern had been used for 20 years in Esque (Discotheque Esque, a.k.a. "DiscoEsque") prior to the construction of this branch, the lawsuit was and still is generally regarded as a bad move on the part of Risko. This incident, combined with the meaningless Formal Disco, made Discotheque CEO mention that it was "typical for Risko to make such a mistake". Thus the phrase.

I like this place, it's well-put together. Especially the diagonal sections.

Interesting name for a CJ considering that in english it would translate into something like crazy diamond islands...  :D

Mjig, which airport pack are You using, I´ve seen it in several other CJs, but haven´t had the time to look deeper into the matter.
Also, does the diagonal houses come with lots or did You lot them Yourself?
