Title: CAM is causing adverse side effects in West Central
Post by: Ramona Brie on September 08, 2007, 05:12:32 PM
My Camelot project's West Central tile grows quickly, where Stage 10 CAMers grow at 3,000 (commercial). Yet, the city doesn't save after such a building is introduced. Why is this?

Well, it's definitely not because of the CAM. If saving doesn't work, you probably have some kind of a hardware error.
Full hard disk, faulty hard disk, low on CPU memory are all possible reasons.

Another possible reason is that you've been playing for too long without saving.
If you're playing for a long time, all memory might have been drained, and too little is available for the saving process.

It's growing very quickly, and then it won't save. SC4 freezes during saving in West Central.

This is new, one must understand. It has never happened in Camelot Downtown before. Cam-D is the only other city with CAM.

Let me guess, you press "save" the mouse-pointer turns into a sandclock.
After a while [because it takes to long] you move your mouse and the sandclock changes into the pointer you normaly have in windows.
The music keeps playing and when you click you do hear the sound when you wanna build something where it can't be build.
If you alt-ctrl-del out of the game and re-enter the screen turns black.

Is this anything near what you experience during a save-freeze?

My guess is that when you try to save the program/sc4 is to busy and tangles up.
Just try to avoid saving just after a zoom in/out, or play at the fasted speed or when there's loads of building going on.
Give the game some time to settle after those actions before you save.
I never tried it but you could try putting the game on pause before saving.

I hope this will help you and let me know if you got the exact same freeze as I described.  ;)

You are exactly right. I think SC is calculating rewards far ahead of their requirements because of the city's overnight growth. This is slowing saving. Before I want to save, I'll pause the game. SC is working very fast and hot in West Central because its growth requires reward infoboxes to pop up all the time. The in-game count is severely falling behind. I have Equinox's query mod, which loves to give higher totals when I query Maxis buildings. I bet you those two totals have discrepancies of thousands, depicting West Central's extremely fast growth rate. Why else would CAM CS10 buildings sprout up in a city with a population of 3 to 5,000 people?

Also, try [CTRL] + [ALT] + S for save instead of normal [CTRL] + S. This will save the data, but won't update the region view. It is generally quicker to save that way than the 'normal' way.

It's the regional commercial capacity that sets the thresholds for the stages, not the city's capacity. ;)
In a built-up region you can very well have stage 10 CS towers growing in a newly established city, if you zone high density.

But can you confirm that saving while on pause does not freeze or reduces the chance? *curious*

Yep. Camelot quadrupled my region's commerce capabilities.

I'll play West Central tonight and pause-save.

The pause-save worked. CWC is now locked up at 95,000 with nearly 200,000 jobs.

I am so sorry that I didn't read this sooner. The thread title threw me off a bit.

I also had a lock up on save problem. I use Daeley's save reminder. I am saving the game the game every 20 minutes or so. I also discovered the solution that by clicking pause, wait a second, click on the lower Maxis tool bar (opens up the save game options), wait a second, then click save. Never had it freeze since I started doing that. But I also found that if I went throught the mouse clicks to quickly it also frooze.

I thought at the time that my computer cpu was having problems or that I had to many programs open in the background ... that sort of thing.

Nice, thought as much but I couldn't test because of having no big cities atm.
Took me ages to get that freeze on a 30K city by saving on high speed.   ;)

Thanks for confirming.
I think the problem is solved then.

Ah, thanks for the solution here! I never actually noticed when the save-freezes happened, and I knew my computer is like a beast when it comes to SC4, so now i have the solution! Thank you so much! &apls  &apls
