I made this recreation of a railroad bridge in the south of France not to far north of the Millau Viaduct. It was built by Gustav Eiffel. I was wondering if it is possible to mod it for use in Simcity. There's one problem though. The deck is wide enough for only one railway track. The real one is single track as well. Is it possible to have a bridge with a single track in Simcity? There might be some other issues as well.
Anyway, here are some pics.

I sure hope its possible, that Viaduct looks really nice! id love to see it ingame ^__^
Well the start piece would have to blend the two tracks into one, but can one track be transit enabled for two way traffic, I think that would be the issue.
It could probably be widened to two tracks, which is probably an easy thing to do?

I did thought about that, but I really don't want to ruin the esthetics of the bridge... :P
This is a very nice bridge you have here, PaulvMontfort.

Ive known about this bridge forever, kind of the prototype for Gustav Eiffel's work with iron on the Effiel tower. And you've modeled it spot on, very impressive :)
very accurate and impressive
Very impressive and detailed work. As far as I am aware, single track working rail is not a function thing yet (if in fact anyone is working on it). However, Expanding that to two tracks wouldn't necessarily be all that bad, and would be a great addition to the game. How long did that take you to model anyway?
im guessing it should be able to mod the paths with a "stoplight" that visually stops trains from running across in one direction while a train is traveling the other and vice versa.
Though ive never even touched the path things, so i dont really know if its possible
Hello Paul, this is a very detailed and nice model. It would be great to see it in the game
However, SC4 is very strict when it comes to transit networks and sizes ::)
The bridge should be created with 16x16 meters pieces in mind. Every section of the bridge must be 16 meters long, or a multiple of this number, 32, 48 ... and 16 meters width.
The bridge should be changed into a double railroadbridge to have a chance to see it in the game. Puzzle pieces and probably something more would be necessary... adn at least in theBridge Engineering Departement there is no such a capability ::)
I dont know if these changes are posible technically ( specilly due to the real bridge model dimensions which are unknown ) and I shoud have to have a look to the model to see if it would be possible ( you can PM a link to the model if you want, MAX7/GMAX) .
I would not worry much about the aesthetics of the bridge... anyway the SC4 perspective will ruin it ::) :D :D
I modelled the bridge keeping the 16m rules in mind, so that shouldn't be a problem ;).
here's a screen to show you how. The grid is set to 16m:

This is an alternative version to the original one. I still have tofigure out how to mod other less geometrical versions....
Yes, I know, these are some worried testing pictures, just to fix everything, the bridge pieces, the way the LODs fit with the terrain and the water, correcting the Maxis pylons dimensions to make them fit with the bridge ones, and how the bridge behaves both in land and in water.... I hope you dont mind.... ;D
This is only a test render version I made to be able to create the mod. PaulvMontfort will make the final render, hopefully better than this one ::)
Thanks Jeronij. It might take a while for me to come up with the final result since I'm still experimenting with Mental Ray settings and nightlighting. BTW, I really like those textures you used. Are you willing to send them to me? That way I can make use them on the bridge since my own textures aren't very good :P
I made a previous render using Catmull-Rom as the renderer, but the final result was not good with this model. Way too edged in game &mmm . For the pictures I used the area filter, but the result is not exactly spectacular ::) ... I hope you find the way to render it properly ;)
I will pack and send you the textures asap ;D
Will the arch still get thrown in somehow?
Ooooooh wow paul and jeroni that bridge is simply amazing!!!!
Looks wonderful.
Jeronij, have you thought about using a custom retaining wall for that bridge? It'd look much better than the default blocky pylons.
At the moment I have no idea about how the Maxis pylons are selected ::) , but I will investigate a bit further to see if we can set the texture for this, or declare new ones ;)
I'm not entirely sure, but it should be possible. If you can't, maybe you'll have to make that freakishly tall, or alter the LODs so they fit in better. :P
I've looked in the Reader, but it doesn't seem to have a setting controlling what retaining wall type appears.
here's a new render by myself. Don't mind the railway textures being of different brightness. I was experimenting with those. This is purely to look how the nightlighting looks ingame. Note that i'm using gizmo28's day-night mod:

link changed to image and image changed to jpg ;) - jeronij
The nightlights are looking nice
What about a daylight picture ;) ?
I was gonna ask the very question but jeroni asked it... BTW paul wow a bridge with nitelites that would be super sweet - pat
some modding work in progress ....

I hope you can notice the variable length , the first totally custom bridge with variable lenght , which has been possible thanks to a NAM team effort
PM, I will send you the definitive models and LODs tonight ;)
After this version, I will try to go for the original version.... who knows ::)?¿
N-I-C-E! ;D
sweeeeeeeeeet stuff, most defintaly...
Sweet!
Can't wait till it's ready for release.
Very nice!
Though, I'll admit I liked the red colour better... :P
the final model will be red. This is just for testing. Jeronij rendered these. I'll do the final.
I like the green model, too, it fits in well with the whole colour scheme.
Why not have both?
That would be kewl to have a choice of colours on this bridge imho...
:o I agree, could we not have both colours? I think the bridge looks fantastic.
Robin
I too agree with having both colors. This bridge is looking very good so far. IMHO there are FAR to little bridge selectoins, even with all that the NAM has added. This would be a huge step in the right direction.
ok, I'm done with rendering here are the pics:

About the green design: It's possible but Jeronij will have to send me new sc4model files with different ID's so I can render them.
Ah, these looks absolutley stunning, now i just have to make some cliffs so i can use it too :D
Looking really nice
Excellent nightlights as well. Not sure about the texture for the cement in the start/end piece however.... maybe it is the picture quality ;D
For a green version, not only new models and TGI's are needed, but also new mods, so It will take a while .... ::) , however I want to try to finish with the last version of this bridge, the one with the standard pylons and the archs toghether.... it is on my to do list, but these days I got some inspiration and I am trying to develope a more credible surface water ;D
Looks good, but the texture for the pylons aren't exactly the best...
Maybe if you ask Jeronij for the pylon textures and rail textures he used?
awesome work guys &apls

what's wrong with the rail textures, those are the ones Jeronij sent me. About the pylons. I didn't like Jeronij's textures for those. Mine looked much better in the preview IMHO. I'll see to get some other ones. But it'll have to wait until the weekend or maybe the next weekend ;)
Hate to be a gravedigger, but how is this bridge coming along?

Most likely, it's not coming along at the moment, otherwise, PaulvMontfort would have posted some progress pics. No offense, but don't you think that the custom content creators are proud of their work, so they would post an update immediately if they make good progress? If they would want to work behind closed doors, they wouldn't need a showcase thread like this one.
Quite often, when no interest is expressed in a project, it simply dies. Its good to ask now and again, even if you can guess the answer.
The problem is that some people don't like the textures I used. At this moment I'm not willing to spend time I don't have in changing them and rerender every piece of the bridge. No offence, But I thing I'll keep the textures as they are and send the models to Jeronij for further processing ;)
well, the textures look great to me ^^

Well, I think they look great! If someone doesn't like them, that's their tough luck. They should build their own bridge instead of complaining. Be proud of the beautiful job you've done Paul - like all the other projects you've presented us with, this one is first rate.
hey Jeronij, hows the modding of this bridge comming along. Just wondering ::) ;)
I am sorry Paulv, but I am terribly sort of time atm. I want to make a NAM Bridges addon with your bridge and some others I worked with lately. I am not sure when I will be able to do this though &mmm
'ss ok, we understand. RL>Sc4... usually
&apls Jeroni you have a lot on your plate and dont worry.... RL # 1, SC4 # 2, Wife & Kids # 3 ;D :D kidding about the last one....
I see you uploaded my bridge. Why did you upload the green test version instead of the red final version ()what()
It's because, if you look back on Page 2, Jeroni actually said he was using the green version for testing variable arch lengths, etc. And since it was all modded and ready a long time ago, it made sense to upload it with the new NAM.
So this was only a test version? Actually, I thought it looked so well that it's a final version. Well, there's no reason that the red model couldn't be modded for the game as well - the more, the merrier. :)
It seems I uploaded the wrong model files :-[ .. I will lock the LEX bridge and upload the right models (red) asap ( this evening). I am sorry for the inconveniences ::)
ok thanks Jeronij ;)
Hmm, I hope Filasimo still has that nice gorge so he can update the pics in the readme file. :)
Hmm, I hope so..., ::) ;)
Would it be possible to still use both the red and green versions? As I've already dl'ed the green, and wouldnt mind both colors.
Unfortunately not atm. There was a missed path error, which is being solved in the red version. The green version is not working correctly atm ::) . If I get PvM permission, once I ask for it ;) , I can try to release a working green version ;D
so the green version would more or less just be EyE CaNdY???
dont worry jeroni, the gorge is still there

Permission Granted ;)
BTW, the red Garabit Viaduct is ready to go, you'll just have to wait for jeronij to unlock the file on the LEX. :) As I said earlier, the green bridge looks very nice indeed, so the updated file shouldn't be too far away, hopefully. :)
Thanks to all for the quick work
The file is updated and unlocked ;)
Thanks for the permission Paul  - I'll give a try to the green version asap ;D

The textures would be simple as rail textures exist already, so it would be cut paste and blend work. All easy and quick
I'm working on a new ground-highway bridge at the moment. I'll post some pictures when I get some reasonable progress. Anyway I think it would look pretty familiar ;)
Looking forward to some pictures Paul!
Cant wait to see what you do for the ground highway Paul!!!!

I thought it was no problem since it has been done before.
There is no problem if the cables are as long as the bridge sections and if we use two sets of cables, one per side of the bridge....
anyway, Fukuda made the previous versions, so he could enligth us about this matter ;)
Paul that is looking real good so far and I bet Fukuda will stop on in to lend some advice in how he did it....
Oh My God Oh My God Oh My God... ok I'll stop. ::) That looks amazing Paul! :D
That seems like a highway bridge? Looks great!
Millau viaduct right? always liked that one.
:o
The model looks good, but for a structure engineer...
it looks wrong, having the pylons turn that way, with the strong axis in the length of the bridge and not across. Wouldn't want to go across it.

Blame the French, their design :P
Well, just had a look at the pictures (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/b/be/Millau-Viaduct-France-20070909.JPG/800px-Millau-Viaduct-France-20070909.JPG) of the bridge.
The lower part of pylons (underneath the deck) is a lot bigger and there by stiffer/stronger across than the top part.
That design makes sense to me, as the top part takes forces in the length of the bridges.
QuoteBlame the French, their design Tongue
Actually, if I remember correctly, it was designed by a British engineering firm. :P
Nice bridge there, though I don't like the textures on the pylons. Hopefully they'll get changed.
