Title: PaulvMontfort Bridges
Post by: PaulvMontfort on September 21, 2007, 02:30:03 PM
I made this recreation of a railroad bridge in the south of France not to far north of the Millau Viaduct. It was built by Gustav Eiffel. I was wondering if it is possible to mod it for use in Simcity. There's one problem though. The deck is wide enough for only one railway track. The real one is single track as well. Is it possible to have a bridge with a single track in Simcity? There might be some other issues as well.

Anyway, here are some pics.

Well the start piece would have to blend the two tracks into one, but can one track be transit enabled for two way traffic, I think that would be the issue.

It could probably be widened to two tracks, which is probably an easy thing to do?

I did thought about that, but I really don't want to ruin the esthetics of the bridge... :P

This is a very nice bridge you have here, PaulvMontfort.

Regarding the issues with the Rail network, with all this puzzle drag technology that we've been messing around with for the NAM, it's definitely possible that we could use it to create a "new" single-track railroad network.  The idea has been tossed around some already.  This would be the perfect excuse to do it :D (though we would need a texture artist).

Ive known about this bridge forever, kind of the prototype for Gustav Eiffel's work with iron on the Effiel tower. And you've modeled it spot on, very impressive :)

Very impressive and detailed work. As far as I am aware, single track working rail is not a function thing yet (if in fact anyone is working on it). However, Expanding that to two tracks wouldn't necessarily be all that bad, and would be a great addition to the game. How long did that take you to model anyway?

im guessing it should be able to mod the paths with a "stoplight" that visually stops trains from running across in one direction while a train is traveling the other and vice versa.
Though ive never even touched the path things, so i dont really know if its possible

Hello Paul, this is a very detailed and nice model. It would be great to see it in the game

However, SC4 is very strict when it comes to transit networks and sizes  ::)

The bridge should be created with 16x16 meters pieces in mind. Every section of the bridge must be 16 meters long, or a multiple of this number, 32, 48 ... and 16 meters width.
The bridge should be changed into a double railroadbridge to have a chance to see it in the game. Puzzle pieces and probably something more would be necessary... adn at least in theBridge Engineering Departement there is no such a capability  ::)
I dont know if these changes are posible technically ( specilly due to the real bridge model dimensions which are unknown ) and I shoud have to have a look to the model to see if it would be possible ( you can PM a link to the model if you want, MAX7/GMAX) .
I would not worry much about the aesthetics of the bridge... anyway the SC4 perspective will ruin it  ::)  :D   :D

I modelled the bridge keeping the 16m rules in mind, so that shouldn't be a problem ;).
here's a screen to show you how. The grid is set to 16m:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg236.imageshack.us%2Fimg236%2F7269%2Fcheckdk7.th.png&hash=cba76fa564f8bb03ea0db8e2322b4765a4777322) (http://img236.imageshack.us/my.php?image=checkdk7.png)

Sorry I can't send you a model. I made it with 3dsmax 9.

EDIT: I could send you a 3ds file though ;)

This is an alternative version to the original one. I still have tofigure out how to mod other less geometrical versions....

Yes, I know, these are some worried testing pictures, just to fix everything, the bridge pieces, the way the LODs fit with the terrain and the water, correcting the Maxis pylons dimensions to make them fit with the bridge ones, and how the bridge behaves both in land and in water.... I hope you dont mind....  ;D

This is only a test render version I made to be able to create the mod. PaulvMontfort will make the final render, hopefully better than this one  ::)

Thanks Jeronij. It might take a while for me to come up with the final result since I'm still experimenting with Mental Ray settings and nightlighting. BTW, I really like those textures you used. Are you willing to send them to me? That way I can make use them on the bridge since my own textures aren't very good :P

I made a previous render using Catmull-Rom as the renderer, but the final result was not good with this model. Way too edged in game  &mmm . For the pictures I used the area filter, but the result is not exactly spectacular  ::) ... I hope you find the way to render it properly  ;)

I will pack and send you the textures asap  ;D

Looks wonderful.

Jeronij, have you thought about using a custom retaining wall for that bridge? It'd look much better than the default blocky pylons.
Title: Re: Garabit Viaduct
Post by: jeronij on September 30, 2007, 03:45:53 AM
At the moment I have no idea about how the Maxis pylons are selected  ::) , but I will investigate a bit further to see if we can set the texture for this, or declare new ones  ;)
Title: Re: Garabit Viaduct
Post by: Shadow Assassin on September 30, 2007, 04:13:48 AM
I'm not entirely sure, but it should be possible. If you can't, maybe you'll have to make that freakishly tall, or alter the LODs so they fit in better. :P

I've looked in the Reader, but it doesn't seem to have a setting controlling what retaining wall type appears.

here's a new render by myself. Don't mind the railway textures being of different brightness. I was experimenting with those. This is purely to look how the nightlighting looks ingame. Note that i'm using gizmo28's day-night mod:

I too agree with having both colors. This bridge is looking very good so far. IMHO there are FAR to little bridge selectoins, even with all that the NAM has added. This would be a huge step in the right direction.

Looking really nice

Excellent nightlights as well. Not sure about the texture for the cement in the start/end piece however.... maybe it is the picture quality  ;D

For a green version, not only new models and TGI's are needed, but also new mods, so It will take a while ....  ::)  , however I want to try to finish with the last version of this bridge, the one with the standard pylons and the archs toghether.... it is on my to do list, but these days I got some inspiration and I am trying to develope a more credible surface water  ;D

what's wrong with the rail textures, those are the ones Jeronij sent me. About the pylons. I didn't like Jeronij's textures for those. Mine looked much better in the preview IMHO. I'll see to get some other ones. But it'll have to wait until the weekend or maybe the next weekend ;)

Most likely, it's not coming along at the moment, otherwise, PaulvMontfort would have posted some progress pics. No offense, but don't you think that the custom content creators are proud of their work, so they would post an update immediately if they make good progress? If they would want to work behind closed doors, they wouldn't need a showcase thread like this one.

Well, I think they look great! If someone doesn't like them, that's their tough luck. They should build their own bridge instead of complaining. Be proud of the beautiful job you've done Paul - like all the other projects you've presented us with, this one is first rate.

Title: Re: Garabit Viaduct

It's because, if you look back on Page 2, Jeroni actually said he was using the green version for testing variable arch lengths, etc. And since it was all modded and ready a long time ago, it made sense to upload it with the new NAM.

-Alex (Tarkus)

The textures would be simple as rail textures exist already, so it would be cut paste and blend work. All easy and quick

I'm working on a new ground-highway bridge at the moment. I'll post some pictures when I get some reasonable progress. Anyway I think it would look pretty familiar ;)

I thought it was no problem since it has been done before.

There is no problem if the cables are as long as the bridge sections and if we use two sets of cables, one per side of the bridge....

anyway, Fukuda made the previous versions, so he could enligth us about this matter  ;)

The model looks good, but for a structure engineer...

it looks wrong, having the pylons turn that way, with the strong axis in the length of the bridge and not across. Wouldn't want to go across it.

Blame the French, their design :P

Well, just had a look at the pictures (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/b/be/Millau-Viaduct-France-20070909.JPG/800px-Millau-Viaduct-France-20070909.JPG) of the bridge.

The lower part of pylons (underneath the deck) is a lot bigger and there by stiffer/stronger across than the top part.
That design makes sense to me, as the top part takes forces in the length of the bridges.

Actually, if I remember correctly, it was designed by a British engineering firm. :P

Nice bridge there, though I don't like the textures on the pylons. Hopefully they'll get changed.
