Title: New heavy elevated rail viaducts
Post by: ArkenbergeJoe on October 29, 2007, 10:05:48 AM
Hello  "$Deal"$

The new heavy elevated rail viaducts will be released soon. At the moment, there are two styles available, grey natural rocks (currently the standard appearance)...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg127.imageshack.us%2Fimg127%2F8913%2Fdiabrcke1pd4.th.jpg&hash=b831167e91a0ea2ea6e2b813a99a65c296adb5a8) (http://img127.imageshack.us/my.php?image=diabrcke1pd4.jpg)

... and a yellow brick texture.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg218.imageshack.us%2Fimg218%2F7251%2Fbraunerviaduktbruecken1cg0.th.jpg&hash=6774da702bbe3235f23ac62e788b609439db5368) (http://img218.imageshack.us/my.php?image=braunerviaduktbruecken1cg0.jpg)

Both textures seem to have quite a fan base, so I'm starting a poll which one should become the standard look, and which one should be available as separate plugin. So, here's the question: Which style do you like more, the grey natural rocks or the yellow bricks?

If you don't know which one you like better, here's a BETA version that contains both styles:

@EDIT: THANKS ANDREAS FOR THE TRANSLATION.

I like the grey natural rocks better, because it's more neutral and IMO fits in with more styles. The yellow brick is just too... yellow. :P

I cast my vote for the grey textures as well - at least as long no red brick texture is available. ;)

I would also like to cast a vote into the general direction of the greyish colour. I like both colours but the grey ones best. A red one would be even better.

But GREAT work Arkenbergjoe

I like the brown version the most. Though both versions are really beautiful!

I have to vote for the Grey Stone as my first choice.

Now, I like both versions.  And it has been found that it should be possible for us to make this into a Draggable Option like SAM where you can have the multiple skins selectable by a Puzzle Piece Starter.  I think it would definately be worthwhile to cerate a RAM (Rail Addon Mod) which will included the MAXIS Base textures, these two El-Rail Viaducts, NOB's Rail textures and NCD's Rail Textures.

Now we're talking! :D
Never miss a chance to create a new 3-letter acronym! $%Grinno$%

If we'll get puzzle pieces first, before seeing it draggable, then my preference is the grey one as well!

We're not the only ones guilty of 3-letter acronyms--*cough* CAM *cough*. Just the vast majority of them. :D  ::)

I too would vote for the "grey stone" option, and I'm all in favor of helping Jason out with the RAM project.

This is truly excellent work, Arkenberge Joe. Es ist sehr gut!   (My German isn't all that great--I'm far better at translating German-to-English rather than the other way around.)

I vote for the yellow, and I think we need a new acronym, as we are going to run out of letters to add to AM at the rate we are creating them.  :P

Maybe we need to replace the AM with something else, I'm up for suggestions.

Perhaps "EM", for "Expansion Mod" or "Extension Mod".  The Rail Extension/Expansion Mod would end up being REM. :D

The Original Modell is from STEX
http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=11944
the autor is morifari.
i have now the modding...

Das Original-Modell ist vom STEX. Der Batter ist morifari. Ich habe es nur gemoddet.
Es kann nur mit Zustimmung des Erstellers online gestellt werden... &mmm
Title: Re: New heavy elevated rail viaducts
Post by: Andreas on November 02, 2007, 10:16:15 AM

Unfortunately, morifari hasn't been active since quite a while, and I don't know if we are able to contact him. However, if you didn't touch the BAT model itself, it would be sufficient to upload the modded lot file and link to the original stations as a dependency. Apart from that, I don't think that morifari wouldn't object such a release; at the time when the GLR mod was developed as beta version, he was ok with publishing his work at the temporary GLR download site GoaSkin put up.

Everything is grey where I come from.  We haven't any pretty yellow stone and even the yellow brick turns dingy in the rain... All the viaducts in the drier west seem to be dark tarred wood and steel with a few being sandstone or concrete.

One more vote for greyish color.

Just played with beta version, picture is updated version of "NAM Overpass Support Files for Alternate Rail". Textures of rail viaduct can be anything since my file only changes IIDs of texture that S3D files are referring to.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg265.imageshack.us%2Fimg265%2F3734%2Farmsfv2ajviaductur7.th.jpg&hash=12e9bb56ab411d73bea89892b7e0b619c2bd824c) (http://img265.imageshack.us/my.php?image=armsfv2ajviaductur7.jpg)
Biggest change is, there's no brighter rails under overpasses.

NAM's elevated heavy rail uses only one rail texture for both overpass and ground. If that texture was changed to Pegasus's rail, overpass shows dirt shoulder as well as the ground. To avoid it, I set MAXIS' IIDs to ground rail in previous version. But it caused another problem, texture appears a little brighter. It happens when the textures for texture based network are used in 3D model based network. I wanted to solve it somehow though I know it is specification of the game.

Luckily ArkenbergeJoe's viaduct uses new IIDs for rail overpass, I could change texture I said before to Pegasus's rail without "dirt shoulder in the sky" issue. It is unexpected bonus for overpass support files. I've adjusted the brightness of textures, and it's not only for NAM's items. I've expanded it to MAXIS' highway, el-rail and monorail, HSRP is covered by a patch file. There may be something I missed, but "brighter rail" would not appear anymore.

Indeed, it makes it look even more realistic. I wonder if we can actually use the same technique (where the underpass texture is separate) for the other network models (such as road, avenue, etc). It'd be extremely useful and the process would be less complicated texture-wise.

The modding of morifari's Victorian Elevated Rail stations is done. :) I have yet to test the diagonal version, but the orthogonal one works fine. :)

Well, the beta version that ArkenbergeJoe posted a while ago contains a modified NAM controller - so if you reinstall the NAM, it will change your installation back to the default NAM controller. I suggest to wait for the final version, which should be released soon. :)

So it will be City Rail by name and City rail will be its use in Solaria.

With the extensive heavy rail network (as well as subway [see transit pic]) taking preference over GLR in Solaria for the rail based mass transit network this City Rail will go great in the Core with the amount of high density development

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi124.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp5%2FPalpatine001%2FSolaria-transitupdate89.jpg&hash=09f7cfa4bd83a7338147af1c4346ec9cc861230c)

Here is the 3. Texture-Mod for the El-Rail

ATTENTION:!!!! "$Deal"$

The new Name for the Haevy-El-Rail is CITY-RAIL

Attention passengers! The train on platform 4 will be delayed by approximately 5 minutes *chorus of groans erupts on platform* CityRail apologises for any inconvenience caused.

:P

(sorry, the rail system here happens to be called CityRail (often nicknamed CitySnail and CityFail due to it's unreliability).

And I know how bad it is. Every time I want to catch a train from one of the North Shore stations, they're always doing "track work".

Venting aside (well, there's more, but that's for another day), that looks great, ArkenbergeJoe!

Well I can say the Elevated Rail Viaducts are just what the doctor orderd, no more traffic snarl ups at busy level crossings.

Thanks to the team who made this possible indeed

That is an example of the work being used, thought I might showcase an example to the team so they can see the fruits of their labour paying off.

Again well done

what i meant was that I will never use a level crossing again, ie, default RR crossing.

Unless, of course, it is on a rural lightly trafficked street.

Another option that uses the girder pieces to form the network instead would be nice, as the stone gives it a older field - but the girder pieces give it a more modern feel.

What exactly is that rumored to include? Single tracks? Multi-tile crossings that actually stop cars from crossing if a train passing on any of the tiles? That's what I'd like to see.

The RAM will, to my knowledge, probably include single-track rail, elevated rail [it's currently puzzle pieces, but all the needed models are already done so it shouldn't be a problem], and of course, multi-track rail that may be done RHW-style. Heh.

We'd probably see R-1, R-3, R-2 left and right, R-4, and so on :P

The Puzzles have a footpaths for the Sims.

Now what I'd like to see is an elevated heavy rail passenger station and a freight station.  Or, more preferably, a variety of them.  I don't like having a long stretch of elevated heavy rail in a dense CBD where I don't want to bulldoze roads crossing under the railway to make way for an elevated/ground transition so I can build a station. Of course I could use Smoncrie's hole digging lots, specifically the ground lifter, to raise the station, but that would involve doing things with the terrain that I don't like to in CBDs and it would be difficult to get a road up to the station in a CBD setting.

I guess he's aware of that, but apart from those, there is no other station so far. royal from the SFBT is working on a station for the rail viaduct pieces, though, and it looks very promising already. :)

It is nice, and I'll re-iterate my request: Having an entire set based on those steel girder pieces would be nice for those of us who want a more gritty industrial look to our railways. Those girder pieces are very nicely done.

What ArkenbergJoe has done is he added extra pedestrian paths to the overpass puzzle pieces that have a roadway going underneath the elevated heavy rail. To get the Sims from the normal roadways to the Ped Mall puzzle pieces, we would have to add extra pedestrian paths to game's normal roadway tiles.

Title: Re: New heavy elevated rail viaducts

It can be done, but someone has to write the RULs for that, which is a rather time-consuming process. Rest assured, it will be done eventually, but it will take a lot of time until the process is complete.

I am not sure if anyone ever asked this question but here goes. Any chance we might see a smooth ground rail to via-rail ramp? The original release ramp seems way to steep for any kind of train to transition from the ground to a viaduct.
Title: Re: New heavy elevated rail viaducts
Post by: Andreas on January 13, 2010, 01:53:22 PM
Well, you could terraform a very smooth ramp (with the ground lifter lot and a rather restrictive slope mod) and then use an on-slope puzzle piece for the connection between ground rail and rail viaduct.

There exists a gradual ground to elevated ramp, made by Caribou (linkie (http://homepage2.nifty.com/caribou/slope.htm)).
The elevated part however connects to ElRail. With a bit of modding, it might be possible to be used as a transition to elevated heavy rail.
Title: Re: New heavy elevated rail viaducts

They work by converting traffic through various networks with one-another (in this case rail to pedestrian to el-rail).  Remember they are TE-lots, not puzzle pieces.

Keep up the good work ArkenbergeJoe!

I have created the Bridge with the diagonal-viaduct.

STEP1

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2Ff8bfd563cd6a22a1dfeabe0e69534e39.jpg&hash=eb065aa471eced0185c54cb3e56b6f756a88ec31) (http://www.ld-host.de/)

Your has the Zero-Bridge-Mod in the Pluginfolder. And Maxis-rails dragging over the vally (without water)

STEP2

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2Fa953d88d504568cd6dcfa3b09e88fdc1.jpg&hash=7714f63356b34b5fe398346b73c8d5b20256d5d4) (http://www.ld-host.de/)

Plopp the blanc terrain viaducts of the "bridge". I created the new fundament for the viaducts.

STEP3

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2Fe3c60f672db951318ee07ab2f0e4410e.jpg&hash=8cd64b3dc34a6eb6ee8d289529e264a76805b274) (http://www.ld-host.de/)

Save the City and close the SC4. Remove the Zero-bridge-Mod to pluginfolder. And started SC4 new!

The double-height el-rail stuff has been nice to have around for a while now and I've been hoping something similar is planned for heavy rail--30m or 7.5m.

What I'm more curious about at the moment is if it's possible to modify the 30m el-rail to carry rail traffic as well. I understand the rail automata works fine on those pieces now but they won't carry real traffic. How difficult would it be for me to change those pieces to carry el-rail and heavy rail? Or only heavy rail? Would it be a matter of copying and pasting the existing paths for elevated rail to paths for heavy rail? I'm pretty new to modding stuff but I've been poking around that NAM dat containing those pieces in the reader and had some ideas for what I might need to do. I'm quite sure I'm not up to the challenge of creating anything new but if it didn't sound too difficult thought I might take a crack at adding rail functionality to the existing pieces. To start with I think I'd only mess with the basic piece, the "T" on-slope piece, and the 30m el-over-15m ave piece.

Ideally I would also change the textures on the top to heavy rail ones. I'd leave the pylons as they are and probably do the same with those textures just to the side of the rail part. Is that just a matter of referencing the FSH files for the rail viaduct surface pieces instead of the el-rail ones?

Any tips? Am I in over my head?

QuoteWould it be a matter of copying and pasting the existing paths for elevated rail to paths for heavy rail?

There's that... and you also need to change the CheckTypes of the puzzle pieces so they're on rail. Other than that, it's a simple process.
