Title: SA's Room of Maps, BATs and a hard-boiled egg
Post by: Shadow Assassin on December 03, 2007, 06:37:43 PM
Well, this is my general purpose topic, for support, showcasing of maps, etc, etc, etc.

Not too long ago, I released my first map under the NHP banner: Whitefall.

This is a long overdue thread.

The color scheme on SC4TF is awesome! I have personal experience with it... The map is amazing for a first map project, guys. SA has really done his work on this one. DL it while it's hot!

Great work, and this is going to be a great thread. Again, long overdue!

How come I don't get a hard-boiled egg? &mmm  Outside of that, you new map is absolutely stunning!  It seems NHP has another mapping maestro on it's hands   Excellent work my friend!

It's just something random... (and is also a Discworld reference) :P

In any case, I changed the colour scale (the NHP team have already seen this) on the SC4T... so it looks a little more realistic.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi237.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff288%2Ffoxteltv%2FCJ%2520Photos%2Fsf_valley_new_mod.jpg&hash=98ba069b1f05a55426420c5fdcf126cb152bdc88)

Stole PEG's Brigantine water mod for demo purposes. :P

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi237.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff288%2Ffoxteltv%2FCJ%2520Photos%2Fsf_valley_new_mod_3.jpg&hash=5e3a5204a07be6ebea36c65a251df154325496c0)
Flying over the mountains.

I've modified the water file, the sky colour (note that it's actually SKY BLUE, not a fluorescent blue! :P) and the terrain colour.

I might need to tweak it further especially in the higher elevations (AND the cliff colour, I'm looking for that setting), but I quite like how things look.

Besk and I are working on tweaking it some more at the moment.

now thats awsome. i love the new color scheme in SC4T. looks much more realistic, and not as bright as the originals. more like a nasa geographics photo.

Of course the colour range will be released (more likely in this topic, because it's only 1kb or so). A compressed version of that colour range will be included too, to use on flatter maps. However, the installation instructions may be a little complicated, because the SC4T can be installed anywhere on your computer, and as a consequence, it would require a fairly detailed readme.

It's possible Wou will release a new version of the Terraformer... but I'm sayin' nothin'. :P

Whitefall is an awesome map ! (I had problem with SC4Mapper, won't load but not "error windows") Is there any solution to render it and make it game-able ?

speaking of problems, there is a guy @simtropolis who is having troubles with the SC4T programs, and would like help if anyone didn't see the thread. its in the NHP forums.

Hello SA, you are showing beautiful things here!

Both maps are great, but the second one is my favourite. Did you make these mountains yourself or they are based on an existing terrain?
As for the color scheme - you fulfill my dreams  :D . I really looks much better. I think changing the color scheme in SC4TF can give more interesting effects and it will be good to play with it a bit more ;)

One question: What are parameters of the rock texture, especially at which angle it appears? Where in SC4TF can I find these parameters?

It's the Columbia River Valley, by Beskhu3epnm, and can be found on the LEX. I only used it to demonstrate the elevation possibilities.

QuoteOne question: What are parameters of the rock texture, especially at which angle it appears? Where in SC4TF can I find these parameters?

Unfortunately, it's hard-coded in SC4TF. Wou is working on that little issue. However, the colours for the terrain can be edited in a simple .ini file, which is good.
Title: Re: SA's Room of Maps, BATs and a hard-boiled egg
Post by: Ennedi on December 15, 2007, 04:46:29 PM
Thank you SA, I know this .ini file and I think I will play a bit with colors too :), But I didn't know the rock texture was hard-coded and looked for it without result.
If it will be changeable, it will be possible to set it exactly as in the game, this way working in SC4TF we will know where the rock texture will appear in game. Of course there are more advantages of it.

I know good sides of terraforming in SC4TF, but it's a real pain for me I haven't any information about textures appearing late in the game. It is possible to use the color scheme to achieve quite precise information about it.

Hey SA, I've had some problems with Whitefall, there is no config and SC4TF fails to render it to an ingame map. What gives?
Title: Re: SA's Room of Maps, BATs and a hard-boiled egg
Post by: Shadow Assassin on December 22, 2007, 07:50:01 PM
That's because the config file is included in the SC4M file.

If you try to render into SC4TF, you will need to make your own (it only takes a few seconds). Alternatively, you can use SC4 Mapper, which shouldn't give you problems. I intended this map to only be rendered with SC4Mapper, rather than SC4TF, since it's a simpler process.

I have a few more maps on the way -- they will include a config as well. Hopefully people shouldn't have problems.

A newer version of Whitefall?

I don't think I'll release a new version so soon after release, but I will have more maps of a different nature soon. Perhaps in the new year.

Hey, nice work on Whitefall SA, it is a really playable looking map, and still interesting too! That colour scheme you've knocked up for SC4TF is also much improved, I would love to get my hands on that (it might make hanving unrendered tiles in-game bearable  :D).
Keep up the great work!

So, um.

What do people think about this latest map? I created it for my own personal use, but if people like it, I may release it. It also needs a name.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi237.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff288%2Ffoxteltv%2FCJ%2520Photos%2Funnamedmap.jpg&hash=07fc93a65388c8dbff92d1a373fdddb4ce542861)

Feel free to post any suggestions.

This map is 100% hand-made in the Terraformer.

Hm.

The folder should be inside your Regions folder (that is My Documents/SimCity 4/Regions)... but you have to load up SC4Terraformer and open the folder in SC4T... then import the SC4M.

Does SC4Mapper work as intended when you create the region?

That region is amazing. I am very choosy when it comes to regions, that is why I usually make my own, but this is one of the few that I downloaded, but also slightly modified (some bigger mountains). Great, great job on this one, and thanks for uploading it.
I named it « Whisper's Inlet »

This is a gorgeous map! Although I don't need it now, I can definitely see myself playing around with is sometime. I usually like very challenging terrain, but then again, I've never built a huge sprawling city before. This might be my chance!

You are a genius mapper, SA! Probably one of my favorites.

Thanks for the comments, guys.

As for the name suggestions, I'll definitely keep them for future maps, maybe for a A - Z mini-map set.

I'm about to start work on a new map, a medium sized one... probably a nice coastal or valley one... or even an inland river one. :P
