Title: Zoning for agriculture...
Post by: minnie on December 07, 2007, 03:29:06 AM
So, i have mostly everything downloadable regarding the farming theme from the BSC team, it's fabulous!
But,
- The farms and fields will grow as long as you zone appropriately sized agricultural areas in your city and if there is the demand for farming.
- These lots designed for use with a related farm. They will not appear without a farm lot that has them assigned to it.
- The dependency links at the bottom of the page are all necessary to make these farms function properly but not necessarily the entire BSC expansion pack. Additional downloads will be necessary to make other farms and fields by BarbyW and Vlakhaas display and work properly. The farms and fields will grow as long as you zone appropriately sized agricultural areas in your city and if there is the demand for farming.

I've search up and down in the read-me's and can't find an actual lot-size telling me how big or how many tiles I have to zone to trigger a growth?
I have the farms and I have the crops, how do I make them grow?

Many Thanks, Minnie

The farm lots SHOULD be named like I-r1_2x2BLS Farm - Breton. The 2x2 tells you the farm lot size and you always need to zone at least two tiles each side bigger. The minimum zone that that farm will develop on is 6x4.
Generally speaking you should not zone less than 6x6 to give more farms the option to develop.

Hello Minnie. I recognize that text. It's from my readme for farms vol02.

All of the farms in that specific package are 4X4 farm lots. So in order to have a farm building plus some fields you will need to zone a minimum 5X5 or 4X6 farm zone (which is very small).

There is no absolute as to how big of an area to zone. More farms come into play the larger you zone. BSC farms are anywhere from 1X2 to 7X6 or 8X10 in size.

Good Luck.

Thank You, BarbyW and jmyers for Your replies!

Do you meen that it doesn't matter how big or small i zone in the end, well not too small I understand that, the lots will "divide" the area/zone between them as they see fit, when there's a demand for them to grow of course? I can't "help" them grow in any way?

and I bid You a lovely weekend

as far as i know they wont actually divide themselves, but you can have a farm that covers a very large area(Largest ive seen was one Owen(Yoman) did that coverd 20% of a large tile).
I ususally make rather large farms, then i will bulldoze some of the fieldtiles and let a new farm grow in the newly created "hole", some prefer to use gridzoning on farms making large grids with one farm in each grid, both get a very realistic feel to them, one makes it look more modern, like corporate farming(the huge zones of square farms) and the other like your old mom 'n' pop's farms.

Farms won't divide up a zone so you need to separate where you want different farms with roads. I usually zone away from any roads by zoning blocks with one tile between them. I then place a road to the farm zones and fill in the spare tiles with trees, tracks or SG's irrigation lots. By using zones of different sizes I get a variety of different farms to grow - something that looks more natural and more what I see here in Brittany.

Have a look at the link below. There are many pictures of rural areas. About half of them show farming. You'll get a good idea of what you can be accomplished.

Yeah, I tend to do this as well - or I simply zone the area for one farm, let it develop, and then zone an area for the next farm (or farm field, to be precise) without the one tile gap.
