Title: More Medium-sized bldgs
Post by: frdrcklim on December 07, 2007, 08:48:26 PM
Not that it's a bad thing but I think people focus more on high-rise bldgs. I'm more of in the mood of lot sizes that are not bigger than 4x4. If you think about it, a city is not about skyscrapers. I've seen small town pics and they look fantastic, but the big city pics were not good for me. I think there should be more medium-sized bldgs in the LEX.

Yeah, well I think it's great to have a large selection of skyscrapers to place so that they don't all look too similar, but Im more in the mood for individual commercial small mom and pop stores right now.  Im trying to recreate Palm Springs, CA. USA as best that the game will allow me and need mass quantities of small mom and pop shops, things like bicycle shops, starbucks shops, clothing shops etc etc etc.  It just doesn't look right to have small used car lots sitting on Palm Cyn in the smack dab middle of the town.  But then again i don't even know if it's possible for people to create commercial ploppable buildings that give the same benefit as the buildings that grow in the game.  But yeah, more medium sized bldgs and smaller too please.

What kind of medium sized buildings are you looking for ?
Maybe you could post some pictures, to get the general idea.

I think there has been made a lot of medium sized building lately. Have a look at the File Exchange.
You find a link in the upper right corner.

Simgoober and spa have made many small/medium style commercials. Simgoober's are in packs but spa's are separate. Search for both of these creators and see if what they have made is what you are looking for.

City Builder: Commercial plops work fine. It's the Residentials that are best suited for eye-candy only plops.
And you can always use the Extra Cheats.dll to plop any Commericial building you have. http://host.simvision.net/SC4ExtraCheats.zip

Hi,
Where does this sc4extracheats.dll file belong?  Does it go into the my documents/sc4/plugins folder or does it go in the games installation folder somewhere?  How is it activated or is it already activated upon starting the game, in either event where do the commercial buildings show up in the game so that they can be chosen to be placed?

Thanks,

One last thing... Can the lot editor be used to make growable commercial buildings permant ploppable buildings too, or can they only be either growable or ploppable but not both?

Mine is in C:\Program Files\Maxis\SimCity 4 Deluxe\Plugins.
All you have to do is hit Ctrl-X to bring it up, as it's loaded with the game.
As for Commercial Lots, finding them can be tricky, depending on the creator, etc. There isn't a standard naming process. If it's a CAMelot, then it generally is listed as CO/CS$x Stage X Building Name. If it's not CAMelot, then sometimes it's named Creator Building, or just Building. Or sometimes, especially some Japanese lots, all you get is numbers.

And I believe that it's PIM, Maxis' PlugIn Manager that creates the desc file that decides growable/ploppable. Otherwise this can be adjusted within iLive's Reader. At least until the CIA allows Wouanagaine to unleash the XTool.  :D
I'm not a Lotter yet though, so I'm not all that familiar with Maxis' PIM.

The problem, I find is that there's no real middle ground between the shorter skyscrapers and SimGoober's tallest mid-rise buildings. It's as if there's a big gap in between 5 storey buildings and 20 storey buildings. There are a few out there, but they're few and far in between.

Once I get up to doing mid-rise buildings, there are quite a few 5-20 floor buildings in my city that I think would look great in game. I think there may be 12 I could recreate for various wealths.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "mid-sized" as everyone has their own interpretation......but, JMyers has produced some real beauties (IMO).  Here's the link.

http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=948

They do tend to grow like very easily, in fact sometimes too much - but it's easy to remove a few.  Whilst you're on the LEX check out his other stuff - all brilliant and quite a fe smaller commercials.

Also,,,,  MattB325 has recently released some great small/mid sized commercials in a W2W series.  They are really top notch and also look good in a non w2w environment.  Check them out on the LEX as well for some great smaller commercials.

Hope this helps.
