One thing that I have seen missing from SC4, and something that not many people have created are realistic buildings for Urban areas. I am still fairly new at using the BAT tools, so forgive me for some of my future noob mistakes.
I have decided that I am going to try to make some Urban houses, maybe some business buildings, but mostly residential.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg110.imageshack.us%2Fimg110%2F7770%2Furbhse1tx4.jpg&hash=f9d5e23df91bca32c90537f60ab4b28967e4fae7)
I still have tons of work to do on this model, but It's getting there. I still need to add some doors, porch posts and railing, electrical meters, the roof and gable of course :P , chimney, and some other things. I also plan to make different variations of this house, with different colors, and about 4-5 different roof styles.
I have posted three houses, (two lots) on the STEX Exchange....
http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?page=1&Keyword=WillG%5F75&view=all
Very neat!! I will be making houses that are very similar, just in the Tampa style. I look forward to seeing more.
My new project:

I have worked on this for the last 2-3 days, hopefully I will release it on the STEX soon.....based on a house in my neighborhood and many neighborhoods throughout the US :)
Will that is looking real nice there and I cant wait to see it finished!!!
Thank you Pat ;)

Almost done with the main model and texturing. Not too sure about the brick lower facade though, and it's a stucco main finish, my graphics just aren't that impressive ;)
Still need to find a good window texture and I am also deciding whether I should add a custom garage, shed, driveway, etc. to the .sc4model or just use props. I hate using props BTW :P
Will if you dont mind me saying I would go for custom!!!! Most defintly I love the brick base alot better as it gives a great contrast!!!
Main model looks really great, good work on that. If I were you, I would indeed make the textures somewhat better tho.
Does anyone have a good (non repetitive) shingle texture? The house is almost done but the textures I have now looks horrible.
I think I'm near being finished, but something is up with the corner of the house in the renderings......::)

Looking good. The roof texture could use a gradient and some signs of age. Take a look at how the roofs of maxis houses look in game. As for the corner problem, try placing the rain gutter flush with that wall, it looks like you're just seeing the shadowed part of the wall in the space between the it and the gutter.
Lastly, have you checked the height scale next to ingame buildings? It's hard to tell from the Gmax renders, but it seems like it might be a little short in game since you have to scale things up just a little from RL scale.
I really like most of the textures(oh yea, rain gutter is too bright, I'd give it a medium gray color or texture) and the layout. And the AC unit looks great. That's something Maxis conveniently forgot ::).
Keep it up,
Chris
I quickly found out what the problem was with the corner, I have a corner piece there (to use with future siding versions of the house) and for some reason it wasn't rendering correctly.
The building is about 5 units tall compared to Maxis' 4 units. I have heard everything from 4-6 units tall per floor, so I don't really know what to believe.
I'm glad you mentioned the roof too, as I just kind of threw it on there after finding it, didn't customize it much :D
Gotta say it does look better than my early work though lol

I'll work on the gutter too, I need to add a darker area in there also where the gutter actually is.
Nice house you got there, try this one for the roof

Little update..added some watermarks and some grime from the chimney, also worked on the gutter to make it more realistic, i may redo the concrete texture also, not 100% happy with that either.

Will that is looking real good I like it as is!!!
Wow, great job on that new roof texture. It's amazing what the little details like that make in the realism of a bat. Looking forward to seeing your progress here.
Chris
Thank you, it's nice to get compliments from some of the great BATers ;D
I think that all that is left on the list is to model the garage, driveway, little flower/bush bed out front and some yard junk like some trash cans and a basketball backboard and hoop. I even thought about modeling a gas meter but that's a little too complicated for me ;).
Hello everyone, I'm back after a few weeks taken off from modeling. I've been looking at some possible future projects, and I was wondering what would be the best way to go about making a stone front facade. I thought about modeling the stones, but then thought that it might be easier to just individually texture each side of the house separately? Any ideas? I attached a small photo from Google Street view of Hudson St in Columbus OH for example to what I'm trying to do..
Model is about complete for the Champion Avenue Homes ;D
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi249.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fgg206%2FWillG_46%2FSC4%2Fwip1-1.jpg&hash=ecb826347ddb743f0363552aad6f5520d7a9f069)
All I need is a chimney and a window air conditioner and I'll be ready to texture it
If anyone has any input or advice to improve the model, speak up! ;)
excellent work &apls
Version 1 finished......
decided to not use a chimney since the reference photos I went off of didn't have one.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi249.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fgg206%2FWillG_46%2FSC4%2Fblue.jpg&hash=eeacaa5cf1ad1d6f06e921b02736653cb317d4c1)
May go back and change the concrete texture......seems too repetitive.
Looks good. A few suggestions if I may.
While not going with a chimney, maybe put some kind of vent up on the roof. Right now its a little lacking and it hurts the overall model. And are you planning on doing nightlighting?
Thanks for the input. I will put a vent and small utility chimney on the roof. And if you mean window lighting, yes I am. My computer won't process spotlights very well so I can't make an overhead light for the porch that looks good.
This new one is looking very good. For the concrete, you can probably just increase the size of the uvw map applied.
Updated, skipped out on the roof vent and added gable vents, added some utility pipe chimneys and some furniture on the porch.

Not directly related to Modeling, but I found a few nice places with lots of material for Houses from years 1903-1961. Just thought it may be helpful for those who like to make older stuff like I do

I suggest you to do some more variations with that same home, maybe change the color texture or add a fireplace or skylights to the roof ;)

Thanks! I have actually set that house aside for a few day, I need to fix some stuff with the LOD's, and I fear it's going to take a long time to fix.

Hello Will. That is actually a very nice house. Especially the front porch area.
Those look really good! What is the height from the base to the roof tip? I am wondering because I wanted to BAT some homes too.
I really like it! $%Grinno$%

I forget the exact height of the building, but I usually make my floors 4.5-5 Gmax squares tall.
Here's what I am working on now,
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.antiquehome.org%2Fimg%2F16schelsea.jpg&hash=97c6ea4190efb76ac73c549075e1cdbe902b1990)

The Chelsea, a four square released by Sears in 1916. I will be doing it without the little door under the kickout on the side, simply because I forgot to model it when I was making that wall :P , but I will think of something to do with that spot, so it doesn't look wierd.
Anyone have any specific colors that this house should be? I am not very good with colors (which is why I didn't do multiple versions of the 1935 Marion), so any input would be nice ;) I want to make 3-4 color variations of this house.
Well, you can make the house any color you wish. but earth tone muted colors are best and probably never too bright or colorful hues. Blue with white shutters, white with black or green shutters, yellow with blue shutters. Obviously not magenta or cyan. What are the colors of the homes in your neighborhood? You can also do a variation. The lower floor is brick and the upper floor is white wood.
If it were me? I would pick a medium grey color. Then add about 15 or so clicks of green. Just enough to give it a slight bit of color. You could use the same method again. Starting with grey but this time add a few clicks of blue. Just enough to give it some hue but not enough to pop out at you.
Trust the good folk here to give you honest opinion and positive feedback.
Thank you for the input, but just a note that the house won't have shutters, but it does have a lot of trim that can be painted. I'll take the white w/ green trim, blue-gray w/ white trim, and possibly a brick lower part and white upper part. I'm only 2/3 of the way finished with modeling.
Why not shutters? That is the sort of thing that makes a small BAT pop out. Difference between a 9 and a 10 rating you know.
There's going to be trim around the windows, like on the photo. Most houses in urban areas don't have shutters anyhow. Plus I think it makes the house look too cluttered, as there are usually more windows on older homes. There will be plenty of houses with shutters on them, a lot more when I get into the 1940's and 1950's era ;)
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi249.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fgg206%2FWillG_46%2FSC4%2Fchelsea_wip1.jpg&hash=c7bd081e7a0205fbe12d49f439e48ce6a0e21906)
I may take one of the dormors off, looks too cluttered.......
Personally? I'd take all the dormers off but for the front. But that's just me. It is your bat. .... Have Fun!!!
those are wonderful little houses!
But I want to point you attention to scaling... they do seem to be stretched along Y axis... Make sure that the plane with drawings is of right proportions.

What does that mean? ()what() Both the length and width of the plan on the patch is the same with box mapping.......30.0. I have the plan spread over an area that would cover a 1x3 tile, which is the size most of my houses will be on, and it fits in there with tons of room to spare. Sorry if I'm missing your point...
EDIT, I saw your comment on the STEX and understand what you mean now. I looked at the Marion again and it was indeed way out of proportion. But I garuantee you that the one I'm working on now is sized proportionally ;)

Wow, just splendid.
I love your American House, go on.
These are very nice little homes.
1903 Radford #555 model is started, sadly the plans on this are terrible when compared to the picture of the house, many of the windows are shown way too wide on the plan, so that's one of many things I'll need to adjust.

Thanks mods for moving this to the ITC section

Just a little more progress on the Radford #555. Still deciding what to do with the side exits, I may make a patio area and do some landscaping around the house, which means I'll need to find some free plant models for gmax and do some LOD editing, lucky me ::)

Are these small enough for maybe a half of a 1x1 lot so a driveway could pass by? If so if you release them as props I could update my 141 suburb lots with them
What's this talk about an Urban Renewal Project, I'm gonna have to call out the lawyers(where's David when you need him) $%Grinno$% :P. Doing really great here, every house looks better than the one before it, and they started off looking good.
I noticed you released several on the STEX already(yea, I know you mentioned it here, getting to my point), which I haven't had a chance to try out yet or look at. I thought I'd ask about the modding, and in particular how you're picking the number of residents and growth stages, and how many tend to grow compared to other residential of similar lot size and growth stage in testing. I tend to be one that believes the modding is just as important(and often more) than the visual aspects, so I hope you don't mind me asking.
I also saw the discussion on trees on the lots in the STEX comments, which I think it's well to not include them, but the lots could use something more to them I think. In particular I'd love to see some with fences ;). I saw you joined ITC(congrats), perhaps Travis could suggest some things for the lots. Lastly, (I'm almost done) just a thought, having more than one lot size for some of them, maybe some 2x2's. For variety :)
Alright, I'll stop pestering you now :D

Lawyers wouldn't do much, since I don't have any money :P
For some reason the SC4 plugin manager kinda acts up on me, including not giving me an option to change occupant size. That's why my last release had 55 people. I'm tempted to send the model file off to Travis since he obviously know more about Lot Editor than me. And about the Lot size, I usually make them 1x3's since that's the closest i can get to real dimensions, but obviously it varies in different places.
QuoteFunny you mention that, Chris; I've been toying around with the idea for some mega-lots.
These would be great for some mega lots, especially if some come out close enough to be put into prop families.

The occupant size actually defines the 'space' that the model occupies in length, height, and width. When you see the box in LE representing the prop or building, this is defined by the occupant size property, and can be changed in the reader. The number of residents it can hold is controlled by the 'capacity satisfied' property in the building exemplar. I'm sure Trav will be able to help out with that, he's gotten pretty good at this stuff.
Also, if you need any help with LOD editing, just shoot me a PM.

Update for tonight, decided to go with the older slate roof look to break up the norm. Hopefully I will get this finished by tomorrow

A railing around the porch would be nice (oh, and did I mention that I like the model a lot?) That looks like a lot of houses around where I live. Some were originally single-familiy homes but have been turned into duplexes like that one, and I live in one that was a single house but was split up into upstairs (the Upstairskis currently live there, they don't make much noise), then there's my section in the middle, and in the basement there's the Downstairskis (they are rednecks that keep me up at 2am and play loud racing video games 24/7 and holler at their kids a lot and are generally very annoying) Anyway... Good work so far.
Are you a Nostairski, then? ::)

I do have railing around the porch, or do you mean the patio? I was planning on just making that concrete or brick, didn't think it needs railing since it's on ground level. This is still a 1 family home, although you could pretend that it's a duplex. Lol I know what you mean, I lived in an army barrack turned apartment building near Port Columbus a long time ago in a really bad area, neighbors can be a ()flamdev() , huh? :D
Thanks for the comments everybody, really appreciated

That's a great new office Will and I can't wait to see it textured! ;D

Oh, by the way, nice job on that office building so far ;)
Nice houses - I am using & enjoying your recentest STEX uploads. It's interesting to see American houses, their look and proportions differ from what was built around here at that time. Gief office building soon - oh, and a building like that would fit in well in downtown Bremen or Hamburg.
Update on the Radford Chase Auto Insurance Building ;)

This is going to be the Jeg's Arena. Jeg's is a Midwestern Automotive store that specializes in performance enhancing equipment for vehicles. As you can see, I was going for a look of an old arena with modern updates. I am going to say that the original Arena was built in the early 1960's due to the trim and architecture I put in there.
WillG :-\
Sort of ran out of ideas of what to do with the Arena so I decided to start a new building.

This will be a close replication of the Union Arcade Building in Davenport, Iowa. Hopefully I will finish this one before starting on a new building, lol.

Hey, I wanted to guess it!
The Union Arcade Building looks really nice, the people working there must have big headaches because of the floor pattern tho ::)

It reminds me a bit of Vegas style carpeting.
The building as a whole is looking pretty good, as is the arena, and the auto insurance building. With the wall setup as it is on the current one I'll be interested to see how lighting it turns out.
-Chris: that smiley is a new one... and you call us fiesty.

I think I can relate to that statement :D
I really like the overall geometry on that arena, I'll look forward to seeing it take shape.

Update on the Union Arcade Building. I think that other than texturing, the facade is finished.

Unfortunately I have bad news about the Union Arcade Building. I started modeling it in gmax and the thing has just gotten so big that, along with the memory usage of gmax, has made it nearly impossible to work on. Shame since I was nearly finished with the model

The new buildings are looking great. For the Union Arcade Building, chop pieces off until it stops lagging, and give the building a different name.
I decided to work on the US Bank Building in Little Rock in gmax until I get my 3ds max issues sorted out. Yeah yeah, I need to finish something :P $%Grinno$%

The interior lighting is almost done on this one, but I have a lighting bug
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg33.picoodle.com%2Fimg%2Fimg33%2F3%2F7%2F31%2Ff_usbankwip5m_dac120f.jpg&hash=221ee2afdf2ade5caee0296c00871e52fbf35eae)
I have no clue where the light is coming from. There isn't a gap there, I have tried different parameters and lighting rigs. I have had this problem and fixed it before, but this one just won't go away. Any help?
EDIT: Fixed it, just moved the lighting rig lower below that error point and the problem went away. Odd.

That building does look rather familiar to this Oregonian . . . can't place it at the moment, though I initially thought that it was the Dania store on Cornell Road. At any rate, the BAT looks most excellent, I must say, and will definitely make a nice addition to my cities!

Thanks, I couldn't figure out what it was, I saw "Decor" on one of the banners, so I thought it was a Furnishing store $%Grinno$%

Hey Will that is looking real good there now with the night lights!!!
Lighting is fixed and finished, now working with the textures. BTW, the wall texture is supposed to be tiling. I may go back and make it a little less gritty, depending on what you guys think.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg8.imageshack.us%2Fimg8%2F7235%2Froddapaint2.jpg&hash=38b36a177d51dea170f6177a2f172368adca0c08)
Well I didn't get it finished today, been working on a big Project Project..lol.
I cleaned up the walls and added the awning texture, although I need to desaturate it some.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg24.imageshack.us%2Fimg24%2F6633%2Froddapaint3.jpg&hash=7709f4ea55e22a5ab4a1113f9226a9b563e729c3)
will that is looking nice!!!
This thing is really getting on my nerves. I keep getting the "File open failed" error. Luckily I have the autobacks turned on, but it's frustrating. I think it's the texturing on the ramp on back. I need to do some backups and diagnostics.
Model and Base Textures Finished ;D
Once BSC send me a range I will finish this up, test it and send it to the LEX Candidacy mods.

Daang Will that is great looking there!! BTW is that a custom texture for the base on the lot?
Will, that looks fantastic! I'm glad to see another Oregon building will be coming to SC4 here soon. And the parking lot textures you've made there look extraordinarily realistic! Excellent work here!
-Alex
Thanks yep it's a custom texture. BTW Pat I added you to my Live Messenger list ;)
wow , that BAT has a place in my cities  love the Parking lot & roof textures &apls
Here's another iconic Portland Warehouse, anyone know what it is? ()stsfd() Learned about editable polys with this one, went from 18000 to 4000 polys ;D
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg257.imageshack.us%2Fimg257%2F4541%2Fmystery1.jpg&hash=322d76b26ea15024121fb528608a28566d1a82c2)
Wow 18 k down to only 4k that is impressive!!!
That's an interesting little trick. Not quite sure how you pulled that off, but it would be good to know. Nice work.
Select all of the objects, right click, Convert To:, Convert to Editable Poly. It basically combines the 5-6 triangle polys that make up a square into one or two polys. Also makes it much easier to work in the view ports, as it gets rid of a bunch of verticies.
Thanks for the tip. I'm certainly going to have to try that next time. I assume it helps render times too?

Just make sure you only do it to objects that you aren't going to modify anymore, because you lose your editing past. It's especially good for text pieces, window frames, and the more intricate details like gargoyles, and yes it shortens the render time.
Would anybody be interested in a simple alpha channel tutorial?
Here's my latest work. Another Portland building, the Chapman Elementary School

It would fit on a 4x4 lot, but I am making the lot a 10x9, as that's about the size of the real life property. Need lots of room for the kids to play.
LoL Will cant let them poor kids go without the play ground equipment lol
