Title: Dependencies Help
Post by: Mr_Pooter on December 22, 2007, 07:36:13 PM
Hey, I'm new here (obviously) so forgive me if this is the wrong forum for this. Anyways, I recently visited the stex (simtropolis) for the first time and I like what I see. I noticed that some files had some dependencies, so I went looking for those. I downloaded a BSC mega pack there, but I heard that it wasn't up to date, so I came here to get the latest version from the BSC Exchange... and I came across a ridiculously long list of dependencies. I had no idea so many dependencies existed! :o ... I'm finding the list to be kinda overwhelming &ops

So, what are some key dependencies I should be downloading? Are there a few mega packs I can get so then I don't have to go searching for a new one every other time I download a custom lot?

I know most custom lots will say what dependencies are required, but the whole thing seems like it'll just be a pain in the butt...

Edit -- Wow, I went to the popular lots because I figured I would just get what everyone else seems to be downloading... Well, I see there's a bunch of mega prop packs! How annoying! What do you guys suggest I download? Are there a few mega packs i can get that will cover mostly everything I'll need?

This dependency stuff sucks. The dependencies get more downloads than the actual custom lots...

Mr_Pooter,

First off, welcome to SC4D. Secondly, I realize that installing dozen of prop packs is a major pain in the you-know-where, however, they are here to stay and after installing them you'll have them forever.

There is a much easier solution than individually clicking each download in its own new window thanks to our resident Code Monkey wouanagaine's BSC Downloader, which is a small program that interfaces with the LEX.

Here's what I suggest you do:

Get the BSC Downloader from the LEX and install it per the readme. Then, go the the LEX and click "Site Extras" on the left site, then click "Legends," then click the "Dependency Packs" tab. This will display all the dependencies. Then, click the "Add to Download List" link. After selecting all of the Dependency Packs you want (I suggest getting all of them if you have a decent internet connection and newer computer), open the BSC Downloader and enter your LEX login information.

Now you will ALL of what you just selected to download ready to go all at once, so you can go to bed or work or watch TV while its all downloading.

While you then have to open and install them all, most Dependency Packs have installers.

I know this takes a lot of time but believe me, the same dependencies are used again and again by different LOT creators here at SC4D. You'll eventually get to the point where you only have to download new or updated dependencies.

Good luck and once again welcome!

Cheers,
Kevin

Mr. Pooter,

Every lot that you download includes a list of dependencies. You should check every individual lot, and make sure you have the needed prop packs for it. Quickcly you will have almost no need to download more dependecies.  You can find an updated list of the dependencies at the bottom of every forums page.

On another side, the site's rules say:

QuoteSC4D does not allow inappropriate member conduct on the forums. This includes, but is not limited to: posting spam, posting hostile comments, "flaming" of any sort, posting simply to increase post count, and so on. So, expect in advance that such content will be noticed quickly and then dealt with severely.  Any member who is found to have created a "sock puppet" (i.e.: a second or otherwise multiple user that is actually the same member under another nic) for any purpose will have membership immediately and permanently terminated, and will lose privileges on the LEX.

Your sentence "This dependency stuff sucks" clearly shows that you did not take the time to read them... so you have now a week of holidays. I hope this will give you enough time to read and understand the rules.
