Title: Is there any addons for the Lot Editor or perhaps an enhanced version?
Post by: City Builder on January 11, 2008, 05:55:48 AM
Hello,
I've had SC4 and RH since release now but only in the last week bothered to see what the B.A.T and Lot Editor were all about and all I can say is that Im thrilled to create my own models and lots for SC4, but...

With all the great knowledge around here I figure if theres been any addons or enhancements for the Lot editor then you all would know.

I find that the Lot Editor though functional is severely lacking in certain aspects that make it rather difficult to figure out what items are what when placing props.  Is there any enhancements of tools that work within the Lot Editor or standalone that allows the user to view the props so that they know what it is exactly before placing the prop on the lot?  Like the way that we have a preview of the base textures, something sort of like that for the props?

It's rather tedius to have to suss out by cryptic name what a prop actually is and what it looks like only after clicking on it.  With thousands of props it's rather unweildy to do it this way.

So.. Is there any stand alone programs or enhancments for the LE that allows the user to view the props before actually placing them on the lot?

Thanks,

Im not sure how to take that really.  First I felt it was an insult, now Im not sure what it's meant to be.  Does it mean I should get off my bum and start searching the internet to see if one exists, or should I open up visual studio and create something myself, or does it mean that wouanagaine has such a tool and is working on it or does it mean nobody actually knows.

You folks are way to cryptic in your responses for someone with an old Abbey Normal brain like myself.  You confuse me  :-\

Anyway, I've seen the stuff in the BSC Exchange and some of it is really nice but havn't rolled upon something that will let me view the props independantly.  If that exists please a linkey would be nice to soothe my old brain.

Much appreciated.

City Builder, at the moment there is no enhancement available for the LotEditor. $%Grinno$%
However, someone might be having something going on... we're only trying not to reveal his little secrets... ::)

You guys and your dirty lil secrets!  :D

And actually its not that difficult to see what kinda props they are all you have to do is add it and see what it looks like, if you dont like it then see what else is there. Its not that hard to do..

Well iLive made some tools (http://www.simtropolis.com/modding/index.cfm?page=1&keyword=ilive) like ILive - PropViewer 0.1 (http://www.simtropolis.com/modding/index.cfm?p=details&id=367)

Serkanner is making a picture folder with an overview picture of each mega prop pack: BSC_SeeThemOl (http://s216.photobucket.com/albums/cc75/BSC_SeeThemOl/)

Link to PropViewer fixed.

Well I wouldn't say that it's difficult more so than it's rather time consuming and cryptic trying to remember what each prop (item) looks like when you have the possibility of thousands or more items.  It seems to me that they aren't exactly categorized or if they are it's not a very good categorization system.  If it were perhaps categorized like "yard items", "buildings", "Educational" etc etc then it would likely be much easier to find something when I want to add "stuff" to a lot instead of scrolling through a great long list reading each items title name and trying to figure out if it's even something I wish to spend the time clicking Okay to so that I can see what it looks like to see if it's the item that I want or not.

Thanks for the linky BarbyW

Unfortunately props cannot be categorized.
Apart from the preview, the only information available about a prop that distinguishes them from each other is the Instance ID and the name.

This in turn shows how important it is that prop makers give their props a name that fully explains what the prop is. ;)

Since the Ilive propviewer allows me to categorize the props how I wish, which for me is more than enough once I get it all organized, I'll be able to quickly go in, choose my category (industrial, backyard, standard homes etc etc) and look through the props that I've categorized to find one that I wish to use in the lot editor.  For me that's a huge benefit and will work most excellently.
