Title: Cameron's custom content Thread
Post by: cameron1991 on February 08, 2007, 01:18:50 AM
Ive just started to use the BAT tool and am slowly learning to BAT so I thought I might  show the content that I make to everyone. Here are some pics of what im working on at the moment.

This is my first BAT, nothing fancy, just a small house with a garage.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi158.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ft101%2Fcameronpapps%2Fhouse3_thumb.jpg&hash=0f6908ae570813e69f80e429f561618a884e3ca2)

Here is a different version of the BAT.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi158.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ft101%2Fcameronpapps%2Fhouse4_thumb1.jpg&hash=43264a5158236031b0d216bc854bea50667bbe7e)

Thats all for now but I will post more images as I complete the BATs.

Great start, batting.

Try to do a preview rendering.
Click on the hammer -> B.A.T. -> Preview - > Day
then press print screen and paste it into your favorite images editor program.

Really a good start. It's good to know that there are still people out there taking the challenge of attempting to BAT.  :thumbsup:
*Thinks back to his first attempt... shivers*

A nice bat to start with. :thumbsup:
You might consider to make a roof overhang and timberframes around windows and doors.

Heres a little update. I tried what Vester said and did a perview rendering and made a roof overhang as kwakelaar suggested.

Ok some important points to get into place when you start batting ...

First of all ... when anybody from the BSC posts advice or comment ... dont expect it to be always OOHS and AHS because that usually dont help you much apart from making you feel good ;)

Now right at the start I think the first thing you do is RENDER that house and get it on a park lot and place it in the game ... your biggest enemy in small buildings are SCALE. See how it fits with other custom homes ... I say custom homes because the Maxis scale on small homes is all over the place ... Simgoober, JMeyers, Sandrasim and others that make homes have settled into a scale that works well and is somewhere in the moddle of the Maxis scaling.

Now your bat ... that garage door is not settled properly on that wall and needs some tuning and trimming and make sure you leave room on the sides for the actual opening to work in a wall like that.

I love your window and door detail.

You might consider extending the roof overhang a bit.
Good shot sofar.

I would suggested that you move your windows and doors into the openings.

Have a look around your neighbourhood. Here the windows are place 5-8 cms into the walls. Some doors are the same. That is if they open outwards.
You should do the same with the garage door.

Maybe finish of the end of the roofs with a barge board (hope that is the name of it in english).

Add some roof junk. Vent pipes, antenna, satelitte disc ect. Again have a look around you.

Thanks for your comments, I may not be able to post an update untill the weekend when I have some time to be alone with the BAT tool as I have just started what looks to be a very busy year at school :'( Anyway, I thought I might try and change the the windows to something like this
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi158.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ft101%2Fcameronpapps%2F12-02-07_1601.jpg&hash=95d3891e170b6b1f2b4e9e44090a2d976d847e0a)
That is a pic of a window on my house I just took with my mobile phone.

Vester, Barge Board? maybe you mean the spoutting, which is used to get rid of water runoff on the roof?

Barge boards or whatever they are called, I think Vester refers to these (see image).

Thanks for all the comments! I tried the gmax "Model a P38" tutorial the other day and it went well so I made a Boeing 727 and when I exported it and tried to place it in the Lot Editor, it looked well, wasted, heres a pic so you can see what I mean...

727 In gmax
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi158.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ft101%2Fcameronpapps%2F727.jpg&hash=1dcdd67ac721586316ef34655ee231b04b4df734)

727 In the Lot Editor
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi158.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ft101%2Fcameronpapps%2Fproblem.jpg&hash=8b48d67ebc995387b13d2090499ca4265a5e4515)

Does any one know the solution to my problem?

Thanks in advance

Also about the Bargeboards, ill have a go at making them in the weekend, thanks for the pic kwakelaar

Looks like a very bad LOD ...

In gMAX go to the BAT and then click the LODS button to see the LODS ... I am sure that wing is outside the LOD.
Title: Re: Cameron's custom content Thread
Post by: cameron1991 on February 15, 2007, 07:03:51 PM
Thanks for the help Colyn, One of the wings was slightly out of the LODs so I reffitted the LODs and exported it a couple of times, but it still doesnt appear properly in the lot editor and im really unsure of what to do now.

Ive fixed the LOD problem but the plane appears rotated in the lot editor even though it shows it level in the BAT, i tried rotating the plane to 45 degrees each way and exported it but it just made it worse.

Heres a pic to show you what i mean...

Thanks for all of your helpfull comments! Ive been working on one of the houses today and thought I would post an update of what Ive been doing.

Ive put in a small sattelite dish, put in some barge boards or spoutting as its called in New Zealand, made a small gap (about 30cm so it isnt visible but its there ;))between the wall and the garage door and placed an old version of the house next to one of simgoobers Swedish houses for size comparison.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi158.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ft101%2Fcameronpapps%2Fhouse.jpg&hash=4d8e7e312c9b499de7b8f95eaf937cdc8bb732c2)

Now im thinking of replacing the brick wall texture and the windows with something more modern to fit with the roof.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here is a picture of 2 billboards I made for Derek_pearce
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi158.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ft101%2Fcameronpapps%2FBillboards.jpg&hash=73867225330ad87483fa4a061fc1598f94ccad21)
There are 2 types of billboards, the first has an image on both sides, and the other has 1 image on one side and supports for the board on the other side
Ive finally found enough time to use the BAT, so ive retextured the walls and windows, and put small frames around them, heres a low quality preview render, it makes the roof tiles look bad, but its all I had time for...
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi158.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ft101%2Fcameronpapps%2Fhouse-1.jpg&hash=9a269b62128b79ee0b16921696af8c3cf3bf8a20)
I can't really make out the new wall texture as the images are a bit small for my old eyes.
A few roof vents and a chimney will break up the big roof a bit, something you could consider.
I am totally jumping ahead here, but what is the value of these homes going to be? R$ or R$$?
you should have one model at R$, and another at a higher value R$$. by the way, they are beautiful :thumbsup:
Thanks for all of your comments!
Im sorry I havnt updated in a long time, But I just havnt had the time (Homework... :angrymore:)
kwakelaar I think ill put a small air conditioning unit behind the garage or something, and as for the chimney, When I think of a house, I dont think of a chimney on it as my house in RL is heated entirely by electricity, so I will probably only have one on a R$ version.
joelevan and Cali Im thinking of making both R$ and R$$ versions. Im going to keep the Plaster texture shown in the picture in my earlier post for the R$$, and im thinking of giving the R$ version a wooden texture and tin roof.
And to wrap this post up, Like I said before....
THANKS FOR ALL YOUR COMMENTS GUYS!
Title: Re: Cameron's custom content Thread SCUBS billboardhouse
Post by: derek_pearce on April 18, 2007, 10:20:30 PM
This is a lot based off a cool image cameron saw on the internet. he  still needs to do the night lights, re-texture the roof and add finer details but he needs more images for the billboard. So he thought I would start this thread so that SC4dev members can post an image here and he will TRY to put it onto a billboard (Remember to keep within the site rules, Absolutely NO pornographic content is to be posted here )
Heres the original image
Sorry I havn't updated in more than a month, I went on a 2 week holiday to Australia, had a mountain of home work to do and (Heres what took most of my time away  ::)) started playing Final Fantasy IX
Also a note about submitting your images, Please make sure they are 2x as wide as it is high (Or fairly close to) so it will not look stretched when it is put on the billboard.
I'm sorry that I haven't updated lately, Homework is catching up on me, But I managed to sit down and play around with gmax for a while and I tried some night lights. They don't look very good at the moment because I'm still experimenting with them, What I'm trying to achieve is a soft glow in each window.
Heres a progress picture
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi158.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ft101%2Fcameronpapps%2Fnightlights.jpg&hash=d8977d7efd50a426f74669de8a325be54f1f40ed)
I'm also having a problem with the perspective viewport
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi158.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ft101%2Fcameronpapps%2Fproblem-1.jpg&hash=2e118f4e446c66fea4f1d7b8978184a265c41a1d)
Can anyone help? Its incredibly annoying, especially when I'm trying to texture things...
Thanks HabLeUrG for your help, Glenni: Yes it did happen when I added lights but it stopped when I followed HableUrg's directions.
Heres a quick small update, Ive Redone the front door and window of the house, re textured the roof, put in an air conditioning unit/ heat pump and a small satellite dish for each house.
Spiderman, Harry Potter and the SCUBS logo were requested by DEREK
I might move the second floor window to the bottom floor because it is in the way of some of the lettering.
So what do you guys think?
Sorry for not updating, The BATs are just about ready to get exported, but it will take atleast another week im afraid ()sad()
I received a school report that wasn't up to my parents standards so they banned me off my computer during the week, so now the only time I can use it is in the weekend &mmm Apparently in English Im "more interested in social interaction with my peers than completing written classwork" (Who wouldn't be? ???)
