Title: Soulstealer LOTing your city
Post by: soulstealer on March 02, 2008, 08:01:53 AM
Soulstealer's port realism pack II – The container docks.

This release will have 13 lots 6x6 6x3 and 3x3. With them you can create realistic container docks and yards. Some lots will provide I-M jobs some will generate income to the city and all slightly boosts ID-IM demands and give moderate air/water pollution.

It was roughly based on Rotterdam's seaport - The busiest seaport in Europe.
http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=51.953853,4.0625161&z=15&hl=en&t=h

I used prop families as many as I could find most are from Jestar's excellent prop packs. The dependencies will be from 15 different files, but if you are a SC4D regular you probably have them all already. I will make a cleanitool for easy file locating.

My base template lot was Jeronij's Cargo Docks on which I built all my lots. So they will blend in nicely with his/her (??) docks as well as with his/her seawalls. The cranes are from SG Rail yard so the lots will also blend in well with them.
I modified the finished lots with the reader to give them proper stats, menu positions, query GUID's etc' and I also made custom intuitive icons for each lot.

13 lots - docks yards and freight

I need help with a few things.
1. First I need to locate links to two dependencies I cannot find their source.
SFBT_stephenhh_Props.dat
Vehicle_Props-V3.dat

2. The containers in the pack are made with 2 prop families from BSC Mega Props - JES Vol07.dat. One family contains several 3 stacked containers, another family contains single containers. In the single container family there is an error as it includes one container that is rotated compared to the other 8-9 containers. This creates weird looking containers when plopped.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg529.imageshack.us%2Fimg529%2F8391%2Fjesmegaprop07errorto9.jpg&hash=5393876bf8597382cbd3f1bdc33cc7d8bdd44c04)

I've made a patch, to put in a zzzz folder, which fixes this issue and was wondering if I can release it with this pack. I know I should have created my own proper prop family (I haven't learned how yet), but I only discovered the problem after I had placed hundreds of these props. So creating a new family means I need to remake all the lots.  &mmm

3. I need a beta tester before I make the final release I want to make sure everything is working well. Please pm me and I will give you ftp link for the zip.

I'm still working on the readme and the cleanitool. I hope I can release it soon probably on STEX since I don't have LEX UL access.

I hope you will like it.

If you want these to be put on the LEX then you should open a Candidacy thread. They can then be given to our scrutineers who will report back.

You can find the vehicle props at Gizmo's site:  http://gizmo.lunarpages.com (http://gizmo.lunarpages.com/)

He has released V4, but I believe you can use the new version in place of V3.  I haven't tried this myself, though.

The container lots are great.  I'm looking forward to these!

Looks like you're off to a great release there! You may want to consider an MML (Menu Management Lot) for the package. Diggis has made a very good "how to" thread here: Making an MML Lot (http://simpeg.com/forum/index.php?topic=3469.0) Keep up the good work!

SFBT_stephenhh_Props.dat is contained in the SFBT Essentials. I assume it's the European garbage bins that you were using on some of those lots.

Thanks guys & barby! I can now complete the readme. I will post more pictures later today. Any feedback on the fine details will be very welcome.

I still wonder about my patch to Jestar mega pack. Is it kosher to attach it to my release?

What kind of patch is that ?

It's a NO-go to include any models in such a patch.
Title: Re: Need help finalising my second port realism pack - Container Docks
Post by: soulstealer on March 03, 2008, 05:30:10 AM
There are no models in the file. It's a copy of the exampler file of the problematic container. I simply removed the building/prop family value from the prop, excluding it from the family.

You shouldnt make any of them provide Industry jobs...Industrial Plops clogg up ur sysmtem...as in they cant get access to freight at all. Its never been resolved and many times the Industrial plops will darken and become abandoned because they cannt access the freight system.

Other then that..ur lots look fantastic something that shoulda been though of awhile ago.

Some updates

I've been working on the lots some more, adding more clutter and action. I don't like lots that look as if nothing is happening down there.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg90.imageshack.us%2Fimg90%2F181%2FSLSTPRP21.jpg&hash=4455821cd82948b7942d0df9678b23958d331b5f)

Also reworked the freight stations. I added some more prop families. It will hold 20 I-M jobs to minimise risk for abandonment and will also spawn freight trucks automata.

I've posted the previous version of these two lots in picture competition thread and the reviews are so far so good. I'm waiting on more input.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg90.imageshack.us%2Fimg90%2F3766%2FSLSTPRP26.jpg&hash=2b7aa4ef230a09dd5c201ce432e0d76180f9e2d7)

last I added another puzzle piece. It's a 3x3 lot to be used as an end for the big cranes tracks. It can be ploped at any E,W,N,S corner and will look like a service area.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg90.imageshack.us%2Fimg90%2F6003%2FSLSTPRP25.jpg&hash=c7c8bef0a1ef0a3c4e32df03cbd90bc371a461a8)

One thing really bugs me. You can see it very clear in the freight station picture. The base textures the concrete with yellow marking appears to be same as the rest of the plain concrete base textures in LE. But when you plop the lot they appear to be darker. Any idea why is that?

I'm also reworking my port realism pack 1, released more than a year ago on STEX. I'm adding some props, another warehouse and changing the base textures to fit with this pack.

Thanks all for the input. I hope this will be out very soon.

I first saw these awesome lots in a picture over at the Best SC4 Picture Competition... and I thought, "That's one heck of an lot editing job done on those lots!"

These will really help out with making ports look so much better.  I can also see using some of the lots separately in an industrial area.  Perhaps some more lots like the "freight station" one would be possible.  But even if you just stick with what you have now, I'd would definitely put something that looks this good to some heavy use.  ;D

As for the textures, I have no idea what may be the cause of the problem.  Maybe you are actually using different textures, try to double-check on that.

Keep up the excellent work!

I think that you went a bit over board with the yellow cranes. Maybe just one yellow crane per lot?

Thanks ky I hope people will find them usefull :)

@dragonshardz I first thought to use one per lots but looking at port pictures I notice they have loads of cranes.

Great lots!    I am working on an area that these would be fantastic in.     I was about to agree that there were too many cranes then you posted the pics and well...   so much for that.   LOL    Are the seawalls based on Jeronij's.    I personnally would love to see some stuff that exsisting seawalls and port stuff would blend right into.   And this seems like it might.

soulstealer:  Making a prop family, for the containers, is fine with me, however, I wouldn't include the Canadian National, as it's an intermodal rail container, not an ocean type.  Also, the zzz thingy shouldn't be necessary, since I never made prop families for these.  Just include your family dat with your upload and everything should be fine.  Cheers!
Title: Re: Need help finalising my second port realism pack - Container Docks
Post by: soulstealer on March 05, 2008, 08:47:51 AM
Hi Jes. First thank you for making these awesome props. This pack wouldn't even come to mind without them.

About the prop family. I didn't make my own family I used one of yours from your mega props 7.
The cohort file for the family is 51500021 and it includes all the 40ft straight containers.
The jes_40ft_Container_CN_Strt01 prop has two instances in the prop file.
instance no. 5625 is OK and does not include the prop family value.
instance no. 5753 is identical and has the prop family with value of 51500021. I guess this is a mistake, is it?

Hope I'm clear.

So without a fixed release of the megaprops file the zzz patch is necessary.

Another question maybe any BATer can answer this. why does the white crane from newman Inc. mega props does not drop shadow?

only thing I don't like, are the "USA-trucks" &mmm that's not very common in R'dam  $%Grinno$%

I more like the European looking freight-trucks ()stsfd()

Post by: soulstealer on March 11, 2008, 11:28:50 AM
Thanks everyone! I'm still working on the lots. making modular lots is not an easy task. I would have been better off with making a 10x20 lot with every thing in its place.

I just finished making some simple textures for the lots, since I couldn't resolve the texture problems I had encountered. They are all based on the default maxis concrete 25fb1100 texture. Many lots out there use this this texture so the port lots will fit nicely with them.

I asked for texture IID's at the BSC forum but I didn't get a response yet. So in the mean time I started perfecting my first Port Realism Pack released on STEX in 2006. I've made two new warehouse lots to join the other 5. Also I retextured all the lots from dirt to concrete, added some clutter props, made custom menu icons and worked the lots in the reader to have appropriate stats.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg227.imageshack.us%2Fimg227%2F7303%2Fportrealismpackicopycq3.jpg&hash=5c7f635262f32907ad72ba61a481b3c6a7492074)

The new lots are at the top left.
The lot with the dirt texture is a teaser for a new pack - Port Realism Pack III - Oil Docks. Like it sounds it will contain lots for making realistic oil refineries. I have 4 lots already but they are not final and I'm also planning on a couple more.

You will be able to track some of my progress in a new MD I've created - Building Port Pol Lucia (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=4095.0). I figured it's best to do the lots and also test them as I go along with actually trying to build a functional port.

@ejc: I couldn't find any euro trucks prop families otherwise I would have used them. I'm thinking of releasing with this pack a small guide and the original icons should you want to modify the lots.

I hope I will be able to complete all of this before my trip at the end of the month. I will not be here for a month and a half while I visit my family in Miami.

Picture war!!!

I've been given the chance to play with Yoman's awesome new crane prop. Thank you so much Yoman!
The cranes are HUGE standing very tall over any container ship and their arm is 11 tiles deep!!!
These babies make me think about remaking this pack. It will not be very difficult only 3-4 lots of the oceanfront docks needs to be reworked the rest can stay the same.

The lots are no way finished its just an early testing. Take a look:

Vs. The older SG crane lots (Jeronij ships will not fit under them when full):
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg404.imageshack.us%2Fimg404%2F9462%2Foldlots2ew2.jpg&hash=e77da90f860b97fb829a88c726bb2282f1b24cf5)

I'm interested in your input, which crane should go in?

Also I'm thinking of changing the orientation of the containers you can see the vertical vs the horizontal in the first 4 pictures, I'm not sure which way to go.
Title: Re: Need help finalising my second port realism pack - Container Docks
Post by: Yoman on March 11, 2008, 06:37:02 PM
For the container alignment, it really depends on the port, the container terminal at Rotterdam uses both, just depends on which side of the pier :P On thing I may point out though, if there are that many cranes on such a small lot, a larger area where the cranes can move (shown with the addition of rails) but aren't currently (due to loading a ship or something) should be included. Just all grouped into one area where they can move maybe 50 feet before running off the rails in one direction and 50 in the other before hitting another crane is unrealistic. Look really nice on your lots otherwise, I'll get the uparm version to you once I finish it (though that could be awhile).

By the way, considering that these are Super Post Panamax cranes, you may want to make the density of the containers a bit higher, and make sure you have alot of room behind the cranes, as these things offload ships that hold up to 12,000 TEUs!

Some updates:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg150.imageshack.us%2Fimg150%2F5720%2Fnewdockslotsce4.jpg&hash=aca5755b42051d91e05d35f9a36c048c066f0509)

There are now 3 4x6 oceanfront lots: 1 crane, 2 cranes, no crane. Instead of the 5 lots with the old cranes.
I added two end pieces left - offices, right - service yard. And thinking of doing two more that will be more plain and will not have any specific purpose just some containers and maybe some trucks.

The huge cranes allow rail lines to be placed under them, this is great because it adds even more realism to the port.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg404.imageshack.us%2Fimg404%2F4751%2Fnewdockslots1ca8.jpg&hash=01d2ca507b032c86d5d34c3ca6e07d7dacdfe1d9)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg245.imageshack.us%2Fimg245%2F5434%2Fnewdockslots2yw7.jpg&hash=e3e493d406771b38d9cfdf99ab6bb5cacdd409d9)

I haven't changed a thing with the backend container yards but I'm thinking of narrowing the gaps as Yoman suggested. if I can't do it maybe I'll just add some clutter on those empty gaps. I'll see how the crane's little brother will fits in and will take it from there.

I also gave the player the freedom of choice between placing container yard horizontal or vertical.

Left to do:
Textures for tracks of the big crane
New icons
Add more clutter
Finish the readme

Edit:

Icons are done :) what do you think?

This is looking great, Soulstealer. I assume you've looked at Google Earth and/or Google Maps for ideas, but have you checked out the twin ports of San Pedro and Long Beach in Southern California? I just found a Panamax container ship being loaded/unloaded by six cranes at once! Check it out:

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=San+Pedro,+CA,+United+States+of+America&ie=UTF8&ll=33.729841,-118.254363&spn=0.003007,0.006781&t=h&z=18

I'm looking forward to what you come up with next.

@Alfred Thank you, I'm really glad you like it.

@BigSlark: Very nice find! Thank you! Makes me rethink my ground textures. I finally got IID range from BSC so intend to start working on them today and the link you gave me really helps.

About the cranes there is no SC ship out there (yet) that will fit under 6 cranes. I'm afraid a ship like that will simply be too big for SC world. The largest container ship to date are JRJ container ships and they are very big already. Just imagine a ship twice that size it will be 18 tiles long.

Wow! Those look incredible, no straddle carrier's though? Well not all ports have em.

Would you mind sharing some of those textures you've created though, especially the ones under the large gantry cranes and my smaller yard cranes?

Thanks Yoman!

I have wraped everything up and will release this pack today or tomorrow with the textures dat.
About the straddle, I have an add-on in mind, another freight yard lot, something big maybe 6x6 or even more, with Jes diagonal containers along with the diagonal straddles. we'll see.  ;)

Finally it's out on STEX  ;D
The textures are in the remake of Pack I: http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=19553
And pack II: http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=19554

I have removed the jobs from the freight yards so they don't go black on you. I did some testings, so I hope there aren't any bugs. Please give feedback.

I have pack III - Oil refinery filler lots, SAM dirty concrete roads and Back Alley lots in the oven. We'll see how they come out.

Now I can play the game a little. :) But in a couple days I going on a vacation for a month and a half.

Hang tight.

Soulstealer, this is incredible work!
I will use them ASAP....

I have, maybe, an answer to your coulouring problem in the freight yard. Though a bit late.... But just found this thread today.
Some Maxis textures appear to contain severeal versions. What you see depends on the wealth level of the lot. You can change that in LEprop (probably also Reader, don't know about that). So I suppose you had some lot with low and other with medium wealth level. No wealth also changes the looks.

Can't wait to get my hands on these.

@projectadam: Thank you.

@FrankU: Thanks and thanks for the info. I ended up doing my own textures which I'm quite pleased with the way they turned out. And the pack is out on STEX since sunday.

And since we are talking about textures... I'm done with the alley kit and SAM textures. Still have to see how they look ingame before I make them finale.

Soulstealer,

Got up this morning at 5.30, downloaded your lots and all the dependencies. Then it took about 45 minutes to install everything into the right directories and my backup directories (never throw everything just into one large black box!). And startet building.
Really great!
At 6.45 my wife and daughter woke up and I shut down the computer.

When it's finished I might take time to show it here, or somewhere else whatever the appropriate thread is.

Soulstealer,

I have pictures of a large terminal I built with your lots this weekend.
They are gorgeous!

I took the liberty to add something to them:
I downloaded PEG's very new Containerships pack and added these ships to your lots. So now I have seven extra lots with each a containership. Looks great!
Also PEG is working on a new container port project. I will gladly use them both in my seaport.

In the meantime PEG has released his new container seaport with additional lots. It is functional, although there is discussion wether it funtions right. About this aspect I can't say anything useful.

I am reworking the port so I can incorporate them. Pictures will follow, if anyone cares.

Last year I was happy with SOMY's great container docks, but now they look a bit out of scale. I consider them as docks for the smaller river ships that transport my containers into the inland.
And this raises a question: does anyone know about ships that are appropriate for this function; smaller ships with containers on them?

And also an answer: Soulstealer, don't be too humble. Your effort is worthwile and appreciated a lot. You did a fantastic job! &apls &apls

hi soulstealer,
just wanted to say that these are great lots that youve made, very detailed and easy to create a huge port now.  just some constructive criticism for you, instead of using the same person prop for each person, try searching for 'amill4' in the lot editor and you will find about 10 or so different groups of people, small and large. also, jestarr has some nice intermodal truck/trailer props that will match your freight containers such as evergreen, hyundai, etc., just search for 'interm' to find them (he has 2 sections of these, the 2nd section offers what you may be looking for).  just thought i would mention this in case you didnt know about these.
once again, excellent work! im eager to see what else you have planned.

edit: i know you said you were going to be away for awhile, so just in case you missed it, jestarr has also added some nice unloaded intermodal truck/trailer combo props. im sure you can find a use for them.
