These Cathedral have been tempting me for a while, been seeing it out the window for the last year and for my first 16 years.
The construction of the church is believed to start around 1170 with the choir. The church was almost finish in 1282 except the northern tower and the vault between the two towers. As it stands now, it has done since 1924, where Christian IX's chapel where finished.

Well the octagonal burial place outside the chuch was finished in 1985.
You can find some more pictures of Roskilde Cathedral here. (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Roskilde_domkirke) Its a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Here is how far I have got now:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FRoskildeDomkirke%2FRD_MR8-1.jpg&hash=39020a8c16e3a66828ab46a4f52970a4afbdd4b8)
Most of the model is just boxes to get the sizes of the church and the different chapels in place.

Yes, I agree...great start! And, one can never have enough cathedrals in ones cities, now can they. I'm really drawn to the architecture of this particular one, too!
Thank you both.
Here is a little update, showing the Cathedral from the games 4 views:

Have moved Frederik V's Chapel, the one with the dome out 2 meters from the church to correspond with RL.
Have mostly worked on the Magi chapel, the one next to Frederik V's.
The church is 88 meters long, 68 meters wide and 75 meters high.
This is a quite ambitious project, and the start is great so far
I'll keep an eye on this development ;D
Vester you caught my attention here with this wonderful Catherdral.... I love Cathedral's in general, their design is just so breath taking and I cant wait to see what you do...
Thanks for your comments.
Haven't been trying to get the dimensions right for the last chapel, but I just can't make it work together with the rest of the church.
Here is a picture of the last chapel (the Glücksborgian chapel):

Vester that pic you took looks real sweet and I do hope you can get the angle worked out..
Very nice picture vester. Any new pictures on where you are at with the Cathedral.

Have reworked this last chapel a few.
Vester that is looking real good and the shape seems to flow a bit better!!!!
Looks good Vester! I look forward to seeing it progress!

Have added textures to the chapel:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FRoskildeDomkirke%2FRD_MR12.jpg&hash=f04ba973c578df1f75c76f0932ee507ef70f87bd)
It was pain in the ***, to add textures to the roofs on the corners. Using the normal UVW Maps was no option.
Had to use separate texture for it and just apply it with out an UVW-map, and work with the tiling.
I can imagine that the complicated shape was a huge amount of work, but wow, it looks great with textures, even though they will receive some more adjustments. :)
As I've just read this cathedral was the first built in Brick Gothic style. And it seems that this BAT will also be the first of this style in SC4. :) Keep at it! ;)
Ah yes, Arne, this looks really good, i wonder how you did the round windows though?
I have always had trouble trying to make windows for round or otherwise irregularely shaped BATs... :(
I guess you mean the window holes in the round wall.
After a suggestion from Callagrax, I used ProBoolean.
With I made a negative mesh for the holes. Then I moved the pivot (base point for an element) to the center for the building. Then I array it around and finally I used the ProBoolean.
Don't have anything progress to show, so you will have to do with the spring picture:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FRoskildeDomkirke%2FP4280244rs.jpg&hash=bf74e00542ae67ea7b270dea396bd378c6d2345a)

The small building in the foreground of the picture is a spring. There is a quite a few springs in the city.
Part of the city name means spring: Kilde = Spring
Have been working on the entrance:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FRoskildeDomkirke%2FRD_MR14.jpg&hash=92fdaca23da9ba996e19b8de157277a260689d20)
Still some work to be done. Need to split some of the parts in two to get the textures in place.
Another RL picture, this one from inside the church, in the southern side of the choir:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FRoskildeDomkirke%2FP5040519rs.jpg&hash=64926f3c5e2cc51e643ce0372f1e83fd7be18bae)
Impressive work and surely we need to have this national monument in an SC4 version!
Thank you.
Have been working on the western portal:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FRoskildeDomkirke%2FRD_MR15.jpg&hash=066f0f9f0a8266e8e5bd36b1e65f64e2339e693b)
Have worked on the brick textures, removing some new bricks, which stood out from the rest. Darken a bit. There are part that still uses the lighter, but reworked texture, just to make the stand out. Areas which by the way earlier have been plastered, and if you know it you can still see traces of it.
The detailing on that Cathedral is amazing! :o Please, don't ever stop working on my account. $%Grinno$% &apls

Have started to add details and textures to the northern tower:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FRoskildeDomkirke%2FRD_MR16.jpg&hash=d41f559478868efd3040762431866024ce2cc915)
its looking great, I like the details of the windows...
the brick texture of the (small chapel?) doesn't fit with the church not sure if thats how the original is.. I suggest you using that same texture with photoshop and change the opacity to a bit darker.
take care
There is a difference between the bricks use on the cathedral and on the chapel.
There is about 500 years between the northern tower and the chapel, even more with the southern tower and more as one go east toward the choir.
The chapel was built in the early 20th century, where the northern tower was finished around 1400, the southern was finish before a big fire in 1282.
Well, maybe the difference is a little to big.
I will try darken the texture and maybe turn up the saturation.
The cathedral is taking great shape. I've love the detail you've put on the towers and the chapelle
Thanks DebussyMan.
Here is an update picture:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FRoskildeDomkirke%2FRD_MR17.jpg&hash=f744be1c77480d94df7581efd3f0f2c41f271f26)
Done with the western wall on the northern tower, except the "crown".
Have also added windows to the chapels and then I have add a little extra.
I think you should have a look for yourself and see what I am talking about.
Have changed uvw map for the brick texture to 150 %.
The textured bits look very much like the real thing. &apls
Soon as I'm able I'll go have a look at the cathedral & bring my laptop so I can compare it to your amazing work.
It's probably a bit too saturated for the game, but wow, that's photorealistic. :)

I cut it out of a picture of the cathedral. Did a little copy and paste, to cover some newly replaced bricks.
Maybe some light from another angle would help you see it. It's one of the few things not in shades.

Well it was the ladder on the back side of the chapel I was thinking of. It's for the fire fighters, so they can get access to the roof construction.
Hi Arne,
It's hard to say anything other than - WOW.
This really is an amazing piece of work. The brick texture you've got there is divine. And the level of detail on that last zoom in pic is stunning.
This is one I cannot wait to see in-game.

Done with the walls on the towers. Still need to get the roofs and foundation in place, but that will have to wait for later.
Need to add some details on the crowns (the top of the walls, just below the roofs.)
EDIT: Just looked up the word. It's not crowns but battlements. Kroner is translated to crowns as well, but not in this connection.
&apls &apls Great progress on your work Vester . Can`t wait for the final result .
Thanks kimcar.
A restoration work is going on, so the back side of the cathedral is closed off until some in the autumn :(
I will try to get as long as I can with the rest. Then do the last chapel when the open the area again. The last chapel really have some details going on:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg512.imageshack.us%2Fimg512%2F4293%2F5128262214db6667fcoiz3.jpg&hash=5c3604ae136771fd196c835ef906d88484922f8c)
BTW: There is a lot of "small" differences between the two towers.
Can you spot some of them ?
Hi Arne,
Great work there - I'm sure that only took you 5 or 10 minutes ;)
I think I spot some of the differences on the towers. Some of the windows are slightly different sizes, including the circle ones at the top. And some of the bits that jut out have one "triangle" on top anf others have two. (You can tell from my detailed architectural terms that I am an expert!)
If there is an advance list of testers for this amazing creation, put me on it!!
All the best
Paul
Can't wait to see you tackle that last chappel. :D It's absolutly beautiful.
The rest of the cathedral is coming along nicely. &apls
I took the trip yesterday, (my Unesco Heritage Site day $%Grinno$%) and boy is this beautiful. A little cleaner than the original, but still. :P
Oops...excuse me while I pick my jaw up from the floor! The brick detail is pretty incredible...love it!
Thanks for the all comments. They are appreciated.

The roof texture is still not the final, just a test one. It's either going to be replaced or reworked.
Nice one Arne. The small bit next to the Magi, I wonder what it is.....the vestry maybe???
I assume the roof texture will be a bit more green, like a lead roof?
And I'm looking forward to see the domed roof to the right of the Magi take on its texture.

Green like lead ? Copper is green, lead is green. This is zinc roofs. Its not going to be green.
Not sure lead has been used as roofing. More for fittings around the edges.

Ahh the Chapel of Frederik V. So am I :P
This is turning into a stunning building, and taking a lot less time for you to do than the 800 years it originally has taken (so far :D)
The roof is a little bright though, maybe some good ole industrial revolution grime will help.
Have been working a little on a new texture for the roof:

vester, upon resuming sc4 the other day i found my trams had been refitted! this cathedral is one to watch!
awesome work there &apls &apls
Hi Arne,
Great to see some more progress, and that chapel is looking very good indeed.
Paul
Thanks for your comments.
After a lot of try and error, I finally got a bit further on with the "edge" around the walls at the top of the column.
First I tried out using the loft function and got a rather strange result, going all over the place,
Then I tried out some box modelling, but got some strange shadow problem.
Then I gave the loft function another try:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FRoskildeDomkirke%2FRD_MR27.jpg&hash=59193437b22e0a6ddbbeced567cdd767e6b453cc)
FINALLY!
That texture is looking very sweet indeed. They say Rome wasn't built in a day, well neither was Roskilde ;) :D
Paul
After trying to get the columns to work, I remember some 3ds models I got from swi21 and replaced the columns:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FRoskildeDomkirke%2FRD_MR27-2.jpg&hash=b7946aa78ccf00f2cb6bebbda2d175f6b679e408)
It's great that you let us take part in the progress of creating this grand (nice ambiguous meaning of that word ;) ) BAT.
Thanks N1.
Here is a quick update before its time to pack my bags. Off for a few days.

and the same from the game perspective:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FRoskildeDomkirke%2FRD_MR28-gpe.jpg&hash=a194e07bc69dcbb5a7de2cf621e52a38b41772ee)
Truly small detailing, I love it. ;D Even though it won't be appearing in game, it's always nice to know it is there.
BTW, how did you make the strips and triglyphs on the corbels and friezes? you used bumpmaps or are they hand modelled?
Just one more thing: it looks like the friezes along the walls (the ones you mention you had problems making them with loft) are wrongly smoothed, you should try clearing their smoothing groups so they show well.
Here is another update for you all:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FRoskildeDomkirke%2FChrIVKapelR03e.jpg&hash=f621879e000a57898ce6b9ef032631c4840ffd8b)
Nothing much to see, but a lot of "try and error".
It's too bad that all those wonderful details won't be much more than a pixel or two in the game. &mmm Keep up your great work, though, it's more than mouthwatering. :)
Great work Arne. The statues look great. Pity so much detail is lost, although if it was shown, we'd probably just model another level again wouldn't we?
Those little statues are looking great there Arne. The detail you put in is amazing.

Now its just a question if I continue upwards or with the windows....
Starting at the beginning and reading through this entire thread has been a surprising and delightful pleasure, Arne. This is, indeed, an ambitious project and a joy to behold, even in its early stages. Thank you for inviting me over for a visit - you now have a new loyal fan who will enjoy watching the rest of the process unfold! :)
Later...

The details are all looking good. I have never used the BAT so it's difficult for me to give advice from a "technical" point of view....... but from a fan watching, I'd say finish the detail on this wall before moving on.
Paul
Good to see you here Joan.
Well here is something from the Cathedrals homepage.

Christian 4's chapel is from approx 1620, Dutch renaissance.
The women figurs in the gable symbolizes the seven christianize virtues. At the top with scale and sword is Justice.
Next to the windows is four small boys with each with a different symbol of death. This shows that the building is a burial chapel.
The in carve years states years for restorations. (1734 and 1833)
Have worked a little more one it:

Wow Arne - the detail is amazing. And that is on part of the building you CANNOT see from your window :D What level of detail is going to occur on the bits that you can stare at from your window all day ;)

Can't even get to that part due to restorations of the roof and the chapel.
&apls &apls Great progress that you have done . It`s true that`s a pitty to not see all the detail , cause they are amazing. Keep it up
Thanks Kimcar.

Here is a picture of the real thing, as it look like from a kayak:

I do kayaking, but its not my picture.
Arne, it's fascinating to see how the mechanics of the different elements come together as you develop them. It is by studying the work of masters like you that beginners like me can better understand the basics of what's appropriate when and where. I'm so glad you decided to share your creation process.

Thanks Joan. Master ? Well thanks you.

You are doing a wonderful job on this Arne! Every update you make is a pleasure for the eye
Thanks for your comments.
Still working on the gable:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FRoskildeDomkirke%2FChrIVKapelR09c2DoF.jpg&hash=a80649fedb592c9d23d6f637168ded4df61910c4)
... and have started playing around with the camera settings. Well this Depth of Fields takes 12 rendering, instead of just one.
Here is a close-up of the gable:

Great level of detail there Arne. Is that the final texture on the cornices and statues etc?
Seeing the gable change from a clown-colored model into a beautifully-textured work of art is amazing! Stunning workmanship.

It's been a while. I started working a little on this.
Here is a quick update:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FRoskildeDomkirke%2FRD_Chr_IVs_R02.jpg&hash=eac58fdbe7bc971f21a2de3d03309ab83023154e)
Have extracted the chapel into a separate model.
Here is a picture from inside the chapel:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe242%2Fvester_DK%2FRoskildeDomkirke%2FIMG_1978.jpg&hash=b72fba3cd3656084e4807d02a5fa5f8f26488dd6)
That is just paint on a flat surface. Amazing, right ?
This is "just" a painting as well:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fcommons%2Fc%2Fcf%2FRD_marstrand.jpg&hash=925c062335a9b57d93707561afd5d500bc33e944)
this includes the columns ect. as well.
Here is a picture (http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/8274/p3220078rsse5.jpg) of the cathedral last year. Well the scaffolding is finally coming down :D
... and the backside will no longer be a construction site. That means I can get some good pictures of my own of this chapel I am working on.
Hey vester it has been a wee while but hey they say good things come to those who wait right??? BTW its looking real great there!!!
&apls &apls Great render for that one. Still a lot of work to do , hum ! Hope to see it soon.
oh yes i like your chapel, but i think that the roof is not ended
