I've just started building Ontario Shore tonight.  So far, I've got the transportation networks, power, water, and some civic services done for the residential & commercial area.  The industrial area will be on the east side of the tile.

Here we see the northernmost main east-west route across the county - the Lake Ontario State Parkway.  This is Exit 1 - a basic diamond interchange with State Route 63 (Ontario Street).

*Note:  Where you see the Open Grass Area - and I realize there's a lot there - that's just a place filler for me until I figure out what I want to do with that area.

Hey Burgsabre, I just read your comment in Rhenen, NN (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=4541),  and see you started a MD about your home county....  In fact we are almost neighbours. The funny thing is that in "my" virtual world your county is part of Nieuw Nederland, so names and highwaynumbers are somehow different... 

Well. it's good that so many dimension can exist at the same time at the same place  ;)

Good luck with your MD.  I always find it interesting to see how people develop their region.  You seem to do a lot more zoning that I do at the start.  I tend to let a small area develop before zoning the next but, so it's nice to see the difference.

And I'm interested in your avatar. I work for HSBC, and see our logo and name there.  Is that an arena and team in Buffalo? I know Buffalo is home to many of our US operations.

Ryan, it's fantastic to see you jumping into the MD arena as well!  This is a fantastic start--I love the RHW you've built there, and the neighborhoods have an interesting layout as well.  And it sounds like there's going to be some serious roadgeekery. :thumbsup:  I will most definitely be following this one here. :)

OK - just a question from Europe: I get the feeling this road-geek gathering spot is the best place to ask : what are weigh stations for? I have seen many of them in the USA but never figured out why they are there...

Nice work with the RHW, but I would love to see some development.

Some railway would be nice, too (hey, it's me, Nardo ...  ;D )

But PLEASE turn your PNGs to JPGs - your PNGs are just too huge and eat up bandwidth like popcorn. Your last pic is 800*498 with not less than 486 kb - a good compressed jpg of this size without a noticable loss of quality would have less than 200kb ...

You have a lovely transportation system and some wonderful usage of PEGs trees to make the city more 'alive'. Both this city and MD are bound to grow quickly! Good luck with future city managements and can't wait to see another update.

In the real world, Murray occupies the northeastern corner of Orleans County.  Murray includes the Village of Kendall (I hated playing them in high school - their fans brought cowbells everywhere they went; and they had a really weird warm-up song about fruit salad. ()what())

My version of Murray is predominantly agricultural, with a few cottages up along the lakeshore.  Murray also features the first of a few state parks & beaches along the Lake Ontario shoreline.

So, without further ado, the Lakeside Beach State Park:

I'm rebuilding my plugins folder (yet again), and the DOT is planning on rebuilding this interchange once it gets the right tools.  :P

You can see the abundance of agriculture.  Orleans County is one of the 'apple capitals' of the United States.

Next, the Ontario Ferry terminal:

The Ontario Ferry serves the southern shore of Orleans County.  There's also a 'fast ferry' that takes off from the majory city in the region (;)) to Buffalo, Rochester, Oswego, and Toronto.

Hi Ryan,

I like this update.  I always enjoy seeing how others build their cities, so found it interesting.

A couple of comments - really just on how your building style differs to mine and I'm certainly not saying it's better or worse!!
Really like the beach.  I often forget to put them in til it's too late.
I tend to use the PEG ferry terminals because they look nicer than the maxis ones.  I'm not aware of other decent ferry terminals other than Goldiva's passenger ferry.
Farms - I usually leave a one or two square gap between Ag-Zone and road and once the farm grows, fill in the gaps with trees and bushes to give a rural country lane kinda feel. 

I look forward to seeing the development and interested to see what houses grow next to the beach.

From experience moving people around, 2 lane roads are next to useless with car ferries, avenues cope only just if the ferries max out, but hey then again I'm offering a friendly tip from a planning balls up when Solaria blew out to 3 million peeps

Dear Readers of Orleans County,

I regret to inform you . . . . . blah blah blah . . .

It's going to be some time before my next update, folks.   :(  My laptop has a power problem.  Something's messed up with the contacts in the port where I plug the power cord in.  It's not getting any power to the laptop.

All my MD-related stuff is on that laptop; therefore, until I get it fixed, there won't be any more Orleans County.

I deeply regret having this happen.  It's been an hono(u)r to read your comments - and I hope to someday have more for y'all to comment on.

I've had similar problems - a virus found its way onto my PC and has reconfigured the way the system boots.  For a week or so I've struggled to fix it.  I've disconnected from the internet and worked in safe mode.  I've backed up as much files I could onto a USB portable storage device and called technicians.  Now that we're both disabled from everything, what gives?
Even though my situation is completely different, here are some suggestions for you:
-Calling or asking a local technician
-Taking your laptop to the local computer store or repair shop
Take care bud, and good luck with your problem.  Meanwhile, wish me luck with mine so that both our CJs (and also for me, important BAT projects) can continue as we once desired.

OK, folks - you've waited for roadgeekery and signage long enough, and today you're going to get it!

Nothing actually in-game today, folks - RL has hit me in the behind and I haven't had much time.  :(

What I'm going to show are items in GMAX's front Perspective and BAT Preview modes.

First, the New York State Department of Transportation (NYDOT) has announced they will follow the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and Standard Highway Signs (SHS) publications of the State of Texas, as the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has been on the leading edge of transportation construction for the past 75 years.

That being said, here are examples of what NYDOT will be using in Orleans County:

You have created a very nice shore Ryan. I have been working on the Lake Ontario Shore in Rhenen the other day, and the only thing I can say is: the sand looks the same LOL. Your beaches are just great,  and I like the tree trunks on them. 

There is only one recommendation that I like to make: try something else to connect power to the farmlands. Those huge electric things spoil the effect of the perfect layouts that you make. Try to get a shed, a billboard or some plopapble trees to link the power...

At the time of the picture, Ontario Shore is a burgeoning community of almost 20,000.  The city is growing at a rapid clip, and the use of the Lake Ontario State Parkway signals that several capital projects to increase capacity may be looming in the very near future.  Enough of me talking - I'll show you what I mean:

A closer look at the Gateway interchange.  Gateway Street is beginning to jam.  The signal cycles are too short, causing long lines that stretch onto both White Birch and Lake Shore.  This street will be improved as well.

Ryan, fantastic update here!  I can see you're having a lot of fun with the RHW Version 3.0 and NWM alphas there--that White Birch/Lake Shore interchange is very creative--and that TLA-3 you've built there fits in very nicely.  You're always cooking up creative transportation systems, which are fun to look at.

I've had to start completely over with Orleans County.  I'm terribly sorry to have to do this to everyone - again.  

Hey, maybe I can get it right this time . . . . for once.

My map is all screwed up.  I'm going to ask our good friend blade2k5 if he would be able to give me another Orleans County map.  :)

From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for your patience.  Orleans County will be back, and greater than ever - but with the same great signs you know and love!  :P

Excellent news Ryan. I'll be keeping an eye out for the first new signs of development on the new map. They say good things are worth the wait, and this is worth waiting for.
